THREE MONTHS HAD PASSED SINCE Hayley O'Brien realised that she had feelings for Billie Eilish. And they had been a long three months. She hadn't told the girl how she felt, she just couldn't. She was absolutely terrified that it might ruin their friendship, something she cherishes more than life itself, and she wouldn't dare jeopardise that for something that could be. In her opinion, why would Billie ever reciprocate it? It's better to keep it to herself and deal with it on her own, because three months ago Hayley had said it was a crush. Three months is a long time to realise that it was exactly the opposite. And the more she understands that what she feels isn't small, the harder it becomes to keep it all a secret.

She's about to embark on a world tour for eight months. She would be with Billie the entire time. So, Hayley's beginning to realise that staying 'friends' is going to be one of the hardest things she'll ever have to do.

"So, why haven't you packed anything?" Liv asks, sprawled out on the brunette's bed as she watches her meticulously fold clothes.

Hayley sighs. "Because by procrastinating it, it was giving me time to ignore the fact that I'm going on tour with her."

Liv blinks. "And... why is that a bad thing?"

"Because now it's finally hitting me that I'm going on tour with her and I'm starting to freak out!"

"Ah..." As she watches her best friend focus solely on packing, she realises that she's starting to spiral. Liv jumps off the bed and sits on the carpet beside her, placing her hands over Hayley's and stopping her from moving. "Hay, look at me." Brown eyes meet blue. "It's going to be okay," she says gently. Hayley inhales a deep breath. "I'm gonna be with you for as long as I can stay, all right?"

She nods. "Yeah. Yeah, it's gonna be fine. Of course it's gonna be fine." Hayley lets out a short laugh. "I don't even know why I'm worrying! There's nothing to worry about." Liv squeezes her hand and gives her a pointed look. She takes another deep breath. "No, you're right. It's gonna be okay."

"And even if it isn't, that's okay, too. We'll work it out together."

She thickly swallows the lump in her throat and wipes her suddenly sweaty hands on her jeans. "What if she finds out?" she questions quietly.

Liv's features soften. "Then we'll deal with it if it happens, okay?"

"What if she finds out and panics, then kicks me out? What if she doesn't want to be friends with me anymore? What if she hates me? What if-"

"Hayley," Liv interrupts firmly. The girl quickly shuts her mouth. "She could never hate you. And she's not going to kick you off tour or stop being friends with you." Her lips lift into the smallest of smiles. "If anything, I think she'd surprise you with how she'd react."

Hayley stares at her in confusion. "Huh?"

"Babes, you can be so daft sometimes." As Hayley continues to stare at her, Olivia throws her hands up in exasperation. "She obviously has feelings for you, too! Seriously, Hayley, open your damn eyes!"

Hayley O'Brien's jaw falls to the floor.

Liv shuffles closer to her, lips pursed. "Hay?" she calls out hesitantly. She doesn't get a response. "... Hayley? Did I break you?"

It takes her another few seconds to snap out of the shock. And then she giggles. "You're funny." However, when Liv arches a brow at her, Hayley's smile disappears in the speed of light. "No, that's not right. That's impossible. You must've misread something."

Olivia rolls her eyes. "Oh, come on. Have you seen how she looks at you? That girl thinks the fucking world of you. You literally can't do anything wrong in her eyes."

A calmness suddenly washes over Hayley. "Okay," she says simply.

Liv doubletakes. "Sorry?"

"Okay," she repeats with a shrug.

"Hayley, this is real," she begins, brows furrowed in concerned at how her mood has done a complete one-eighty.

Hayley nods. "That's before I decided to pretend it doesn't," she retorts with a smile. "I'm in denial."

Liv's eyes squint and she places the folded jumper in her hands down. "Okay, honey..." She takes one of Hayley's hands. "Normally when someone's in denial, they don't usually admit that they're in denial."

"That's because they're in denial about being in denial! But I'm not in denial," she exclaims happily. "I'm in denial!"

The older girl sighs in exasperation. "Are you just quoting Brooklyn Nine-Nine to me?"

"Only because Terry Jeffords currently represents my exact feelings," Hayley retorts in offence. "I'm staying in denial because none of it is real, so there's no need to accept it. Because why bother accepting something that isn't real?"

"Good God this is going to be a long year."
