HAYLEY STARES AT HER GIRLFRIEND in awe. She's in disbelief as to how someone can look so fucking beautiful. Half the time, she doesn't think that Billie is real. Majority of the time she doesn't understand that she gets to be alive at the same time as her, let alone be the one that she shares clandestine meetings and stolen kisses with, and things only they get to know about. Even though they're within a giant room with hundreds of people clad in their finest attire, all Hayley can see is her.

They're two and a half hours into the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. For those two and half hours, Billie had been holding onto Hayley's hand and twisting the silver rings on the brunette's hands to try and calm her anxiety down. There's one category left before the Best Original Song is presented. She watches the small, familiar group of people on their table whisper to one another, and she leans closer to Hayley. "I don't think we're gonna win," she mutters nervously.

Hayley turns her head to look at her, brown eyes wide in surprise. "What?" she whispers. Her eyes dart around and she lowers her voice further, her eyebrows drawn together in concern as she shuffles closer. "Baby, you're gonna win. And if you don't, I'll go steal it for you from whoever does."

A soft smile adorns Billie's face as she bites onto her lip. "That's cheating," she murmurs.

She shrugs. "Don't care." Hayley looks at her pointedly when they lock eyes. "You're winning," she says firmly.

Finneas leans across the table and quickly grabs their attention. "What are you whispering about?" he asks quietly.

Hayley waves a hand. "Oh, just how I might commit a crime later tonight." Aside from Billie, everyone's eyes widen. She squeezes the girl's hand. "But it's not gonna happen."

A round of applause suddenly erupts throughout the room and the two girls realise that they've just missed whoever had won. The acceptance speech moves quickly as Hayley places all her attention onto Billie, rubbing soothing circles on the back of her hand and murmuring countless reassurances. It's not long before they watch Zoë Kravitz and Jake Gyllenhaal walk onto the stage. She hears Billie's breath catch.

"From the tennis courts of Compton, to the war-torn streets of Belfast and a Columbian village, from a universal road of addiction and recovery, to the elite realm of international espionage..." Hayley squeezes Billie's hand tighter at the subtle mention of her film. "These compositions took us on deeply human journeys around the world."

"Their powerful and engaging lyrical motifs combined with dynamic instrumental storytelling touched our souls. Each piece created an emotional experience that will remain with us long after the final credits. Here are the nominees for Original Song. 'Be Alive' from King Richard, music and lyric by Dixson and Beyoncé Knowles Carter 'Dos Oruguitas' from Encanto, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. 'Down to Joy' from Belfast, music and lyric by Van Morrison. 'No Time To Die' from No Time To Die. Music and lyric by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell. 'Somehow You Do' from Four Good Days, music and lyric by Diane Warren."

Even though Hayley isn't even nominated herself, her heart is beating so firmly within her ribcage that she believes the entire room might be able to hear it. She can't imagine how Finneas and Billie must be feeling.

"And the Oscar goes to..."

Zoë opens the scarlet envelope and chuckles to herself. "Billie Eilish and Finneas."

Billie jumps in her seat and her hand flies up to cover her mouth. And then she immediately spins around and crashes into Hayley. She laughs and grips onto Billie just as tightly as they rock side to side. "You did it," she whispers. She feels Billie shaking with what must be pure shock. Tears have already sprung to her eyes as her girlfriend rushes over to hug her parents, and Hayley turns around to hug Finneas with a wide grin. He shakes his head in disbelief and laughs.

And then they all step back as the brother and sister wrap each other in their arms. Claudia pulls Hayley into her side as they both wide away tears from each other's faces.

Right before they go over to accept the golden award, Billie locks eyes with her and smiles the brightest, most joyous smile that she has ever seen. She feels like a deer in headlights. Billie strides over quickly and grabs her face to pull her closer, firmly locking their lips for a few seconds that to Hayley feels like eternity. Billie takes a small step back and stares into her eyes as a single tear falls down her cheek. "Thank you," she whispers.

Hayley smiles and nudges her over to Finneas. "Go get it." Her smile only widens as she watches Billie practically skip over.

Seconds later, the siblings each hold an Oscar of their own. "Whoa." Billie giggles in disbelief. "Oh, my God!" She holds up the trophy with another grin. "You guys, oh my gosh, um, this is so wonderful, I could scream..." Hayley's smile mimics Billie's as she brushes another tear off her cheek. It's clear the girl is trying to hold herself back from sobbing as she continues, "Thank you to our Double-Oh-Seven family, Barbara Broccoli, Michael G Wilson, um, MGM, Cary Fukunaga, Daniel Craig, to Han Zimmer who's not here but is so amazing, Stephen Lipson, Johnny Marr for taking our song and making it worthy of James Bond, um-"

Billie inhales a sharp breath and locks eyes with Hayley across the room. You got this, baby, she mouths.

"Our managers, Danny, Brandon, and Laura, we love you so much." Billie giggles again. "And thank you to Tony Styler, we love you."

Finneas leans over her to reach the microphone. "We want to thank our parents who have always been our biggest inspirations and our heroes." Hayley takes one of Maggie's hands as the woman watches her kids with glossy eyes. "And we love you as parents and we love you as real people, too." Everyone laughs.

"And I just want to thank my girlfriend." Hayley's eyes widen as Billie turns to look at her. "I literally couldn't have done this without you. So, just thank you. I love you." She feels Claudia clutch onto her arm as now she's the one having to hold back a sob. Hayley O'Brien feels like the luckiest person on the Earth.

"Thank you so much to the Academy, we promise not to lose these."

After embracing each other again, Billie leaves her brother on stage as she races back over to Hayley and collides into her. She laughs as she's found that she's almost knocked straight to the floor, but clutches onto Billie just as tight as the O'Connell jumps on the balls of her feet. "I told you!" she says between peppering dozens of kisses into Billie's hair.

Billie places her hands on the back of the girl's neck as she stares deep into her eyes. "I'm serious," she states quietly. Hayley's face slowly falls as she finds herself lost with the oceans. "Thank you. For everything."

"You don't need to thank me."

"Yeah, yeah, I do. You made me realise what being truly happy is like. You saved me, Hayley O'Brien."
