BILLIE STANDS BY THE FRONT door, possibly as anxious as she's ever been in her life. She wonders if the girl inside hates her. Finneas had shown her the messages, she knows that Hayley knows she had lied to her face. Does it make her a bad person for fabricating the truth in order to surprise her just like she had been surprised a few months earlier? No. It can't. Because then that would make Hayley a bad person, and Billie thinks she's a goddamn angel.

She looks down to the small, white box in her hands, hiding the carefully decorated cake she had baked earlier in the morning. Shark had taken a tiny bite out of the bottom, but a slightly damaged cake is better than no cake, right? That's what she tells herself, anyway.

Although the front door is closed, she can hear laughter and loud voices from the backyard belonging to the small group of four inhabiting it. And even with multiple voices, she can instantly distinguish Hayley's. Her giggles float through the air and into Billie's ears, ringing through her head like a song. It's the best sound she's ever heard. She takes a deep breath and raises her hand to knock. Once, twice, then a third.

"Hayley, I think I heard someone at the front, can you get the door?"

"No, you get the door!"

There's a pause as Liv tries to find a way to convince her best friend to be the one who discovers who is waiting patiently out the front. "It might be Dylan; he could be surprising you."

If there's further chatter, Billie can't hear it. But she does hear the footsteps that quickly begin to approach in her direction. Her heart thumps within her chest like a wild animal trying to break free from its cage, and she exhales shakily as she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. And then the door swings open. Hayley stops in her tracks abruptly, staring at the blonde before her with wide eyes of shock. Billie smiles at her hesitantly, unsure of how she might react. "Happy birthday, ice-cube," she says softly.

Hayley breaks into a wide grin as she shrieks, lunging forward to tightly wrap her arms around her friend. Her smile is mimicked on Billie's face as they rock side to side. "How was New York?" Hayley whispers with a huff of a laugh.

"Not nearly as special as this."

When they break apart, they share another smile, the moment only interrupted as another presence suddenly joins them. There's a blur of black, curly hair, and then Conan stands by Hayley, his eyes trained on the white box in Billie's hands. "Is that cake?" he quietly asks, voice filled with hope.

Billie laughs. "Do you want it to be cake?"

"Desperately, Eilish," he deadpans. "So, so fucking desperately." Hayley nods in agreement.

"Then, yeah, it's cake."

Hayley's eyes widen again. "Wait, you brought me a cake?"

Billie grins. "Sure did. It's your birthday. It's not a party without cake."

"I'll take that, thank you very much!" Conan swiftly grabs the box and skips away, disappearing out of sight and into the kitchen.

The girls both giggle. Hayley turns back to study her, eyes darting across her face. "So, you pulled a me," she concludes.

"A 'you'?" Billie questions in confusion, shutting the front door as she follows her inside.

"Yeah, a me. You made excuses to throw me off so you could..." She waves a hand and laughs in disbelief. "Do this. But I gotta say, I think I did it better."

Billie rolls her eyes. "Sure you did."

"No really, I did. I didn't fuck up the excuse."

She purses her lips. "Okay, that's fair," she agrees.

As they walk into the back of the house, they're greeted with cheers from Conan and the two Olivias. And Hayley realises that they all knew that Billie was meant to be here. The next few hours are filled with blasting music (sorry Heather), wild and unapologetic dancing, chaotic rounds of Uno, and eating chocolate cookies and Billie's handcrafted cake.

Now, they sit by the fire-pit on the grass staring up at the millions of sparkling stars in the sky. Hayley turns to watch Billie through the flickering flames as she points out constellations then giggles when Conan tries to name them and dramatically fails at it. She watches Billie's lips twist into smiles and her eyes shine with excitement and happiness. She watches her best friends, the closest people to her in the world, open their arms widely to let in and accept Billie as one of their own.

Feeling someone's gaze on her, Billie glances to her and they lock eyes. Billie smiles. It's then that Hayley O'Brien realises that she is royally fucked. Because she would do absolutely anything for the girl with the blonde hair in the backyard of her home. And the scariest part about it is that she's not scared of that fact at all.
