12- Even
I watched Avox as he made breakfast. I felt rude letting him do it but his cooking skills were far superior to mine.
He smiled slightly as he noticed me staring. "I don't mind, but we should at least talk about something."
"What do you want to talk about?" I leaned back in my chair.
I was indecisive, I always had been.
He watched the eggs in the pan. "This morning I figured out who you were. I knew I recognized you, but I didn't know why."
I straightened up. "I don't want this to come off the wrong way, but you didn't know who I was?"
He ran a hand through his hair. "I don't think that was an accident. I knew about you when you were a kid then one day you suddenly vanished."
I nodded. "Probably around the time that I came out."
"And I never heard of you since. I'm glad for that I guess because if I would've known when we first met I wouldn't be here."
I leaned on the edge of the counter. "Why?"
"If I remember correctly, the Scottish Mafia is known for keeping excellent records. That's why you had so many alliances in your prime. So, you should already know."
"If you're running away from the Mafia, why are you looking for your sister?"
He finally looked up. "Do you know the whole story about her?"
"No." I shook my head. "Rosa hasn't told me yet and she keeps secrets very well."
"How much do you know?"
"I still have the wedding date on my calendar." I pointed to it.
"You were invited?" He raised his eyebrows.
I laughed slightly. "Ana Sanchez doesn't go to weddings without me."
"Why?" He leaned forward.
"Because at her wedding I threw her mother out and Rosa's loved me ever since." I smiled a bit at the memory.
"You were at their wedding?" He pushed a plate in front of me.
"Are we going to keep doing this?" I took a bite of the food. I had no idea what it was, but it was good.
"Doing what?" He picked up Blue and sat down beside me.
"Asking another question every time I give you an answer." I scratched Blue's head lightly.
"One answer makes a million questions." His eyes were dead serious.
I laughed awkwardly. "Where do I start the story then?"
"When and where did you meet Rosa?" He stole a bit of food from my plate. I didn't mind.
"Well I officially met her at her wedding, but we started talking about two months before."
"You already know what I'm going to say." He smiled.
"Long story short, I was working with River to uncover some of Alonso's weaknesses, we ended up in the Sanchez house and I was tasked with going through Rosa's room because River thought I was the only man that wouldn't take anything we didn't need if you know what I mean. I knew all the hiding places I used as a teenager, so I looked under her floorboards. I found a small box filled with dozens of letters and a ring. So I did what any reasonable person would do and put the box back. I left a note for her and signed with a small sketch of a dinosaur instead of my name. A few months later I wore a tie with that same dinosaur to an event. She messaged me the next day."
"And you've gotten along ever since?" He inquired.
"No." I laughed. "She called me a number of names and yelled at me until I explained why I was there. Then we formed an alliance. She didn't like me, then she loved me. If you can offer Ana any kind of protection she'll love you forever."
"Sounds like her." He smiled a little.
"Anyways." I cleared my throat. "Enough about Rosa. I want to hear about you."
His eyes widened very slightly. I wouldn't of noticed it if I wasn't watching him so carefully. "I'm boring."
I frowned. "I don't want to start whatever this is out with lying, so I'm going to be honest. I know you're not boring anyways, but I also may have looked at the 'excellent record' we keep of you."
"So why ask?" He stood up to wash the plate.
I sighed. "I get bullet points. I don't know any sides of the story. I know what happened I just don't know how, why, or how you were involved."
He fidgeted with something in his pocket and looked at the floor. "So you know about Noah." He whispered.
I nodded. "Yeah. I only know that it happened though, I don't know details. If you want to talk about it I'm here, if you don't that's perfectly fine too."
"It's just weird." He whispered. "That you know about it and you're fine hearing about it." He laughed slightly. "It's not like I'm going to leave you for him I guess. Sorry, that was weird."
"I don't mind." I smiled at him even though he was still watching the floor.
"In that case you can expect a lot of that." He looked up at me.
I pressed my lips into a tight line. "My dad died when I was a teenager, I never liked women the media just assumed. I had my first boyfriend when I was nineteen not sixteen, the man in the papers wasn't real. My real first boyfriend was sleeping with a woman throughout our entire relationship. My sister had cancer when she was twelve, the same kind killed my dad and that's my biggest fear. My dad thought the Loch Ness Monster was real and that's why I love dinosaurs." I stared at him. "Now we're even."
He leaned against the wall. "You know my biggest fear?"
The tension in the room vanished. "No, I guess I don't."
He grinned. "In that case, I'm not telling you."
