𝟬𝟬𝟮. Mistakes That Stain

FROZEN HEARTS.
[ 2 ]
"mistakes that stain"

Izzie Steven's had vanished. She was gone with a note, and the space that the sunshine blonde had once occupied in everyone's hearts had a forever storm looming over it. Gaia lost her blonde partner in crime. The blonde leading the blonde was their motto, original, right? To say Gaia was devastated was an understatement. Her heart ached for Izzie to just show up at her door and for all of this to be a joke that they could sit and laugh about while baking cupcakes together with frosting and sprinkles. But it was real.

Izzie Steven's was gone. And it had just added on to the events of the night.

Gaia was sitting next to Meredith on a hard chair in silence. Neither knew what to say to each other at a time like this.

The residents of Seattle Grace were being questioned about the death of the patient. See there were many people brought in that night, burn patients, and all with a big accident. While on duty someone had died and no one knew how. Well, not that no one knew how no one knew who was assigned to said patient. And the hospital couldn't have this they've let worse slide.

Someone had made a mistake and risked the other's jobs. But if you ask Gaia everybody makes mistakes. This person shouldn't be to blame for one slip-up. And she would hate if they got blamed for all of this. Many people were working with the patient everybody was everywhere as she heard from Serena.

And while Alex Karev, Cristina Yang, April Kepner, Jackson Avery, Serena Wilson, Callie Torres, and other residents sat in a gloomy hallway awaiting their interrogation, Gaia Mitchell sat bouncing her leg on the tile floors of Meredith Grey's hospital room. She wasn't being questioned.

Gaia had been on the Psych floor the whole day and mainly the whole time she had stepped foot into the hospital. The blonde wasn't even working in that unit with everyone when the situation took place. So they saw no need to talk to the blonde since she had no part in anything.

Gaia was safe if you put it in a way. But she didn't feel it. The girl was worrying profusely about her friends whose jobs were at stake and the fear they must be feeling right now. Sitting, waiting in silence they racked their brains of anything they could remember to try and prove their innocence. The anxiety that probably filled the room washed away all senses as it flowed from the floors to the ceiling. Circulating the hallway again and again growing.

Gaia fidgeted with her blonde locks pulling and twisting the strands in worry. Serena was there, to be questioned. And Gaia was dying to know what was happening in the redhead's mind. She wished she could have been there to comfort her or listen to the phoenix's words of protest for how unbelievably stupid this whole debacle was.

It brought a slight smile to her face knowing her friend would stick up for everyone else waiting to be questioned.

"God could this day get any worse."

The Mitchell girl brought her head up hearing Meredith speak. She tilted her head back in annoyance groaning then dropped her head on the hospital bed pillow. Thunderstruck outside getting the two girls' attention.

Gaia sighed fidgeting with her fingers once more staring out the dark window.

"Knowing this place. Yes."

. . .

before

A blonde mop of hair swayed side to side as its owner moved her two feet in a fast-paced manner trying to catch up to someone ahead of her. Attending and residents surrounded the girl blurs of them everywhere as they responded to their calls.

Gaia dodged people left and right running in the direction her friend was headed. With one last huff of breath, she finally caught up to the fast girl dropping her arms at her sides. Serena, noticing a presence turned her head to the right meeting her friend's smiley glance.

Serena's face drew into a frown looking at Gaia.

"Ok, sweetie what's got you so chipper this morning? Did somebody put too many sugar packets in your coffee do I need to go get my boxing gloves?" The redhead wrapped an arm around her friend.

Gaia let out a chuckle upon hearing her friend's words. For her information, she willingly put those seven packets of sugar into her coffee.

"No silly I'm just in a good mood today. The sun is shining I get to see my favorite person, and I have an idea."

"What's your idea?" Serena asked her friend as they continued to walk, well-speed walk through the halls. Serena seemed to be heading somewhere with all the twists and turns she was taking, the blonde following suit.

Gaia closed her eyes scrunching her face and shook her head. She still had a bright smile plastered on her rosy face.

"Well, I can't tell you it would ruin the ideas of it." Gaia brought her finger up pointing it at Serena's face.

"The ideaness? Hon is that even a word in the English dictionary?"

The blonde made a face linking her arm with Serena's.

"Where are you heading to anyways?" Gaia questioned her friend.

"To April. Said she needed my help. And me being the wonderful person I am allowed her to use my services. I can spare her a minute out of my day if I must." Serena shrugged.

Gaia let out a breathy laugh shaking her head at Serena.

"This place is hell. You know every day I walk in here and I feel this literal looming shadow over me telling me something is gonna go wrong and today I think it's on its period." Serena shook her head in disgust she had a terrible feeling today that she just couldn't shake.

"Well, I think I'll see you off then. Good luck!" The blonde stopped following her friend still smiling at her as she started to walk away.

"Hey, Bambi. Stay up in the loony bin today I don't want you in any trouble, because well, we all know I'm always right about things like this." Serena's head was turned back in the direction she left her friend in. Her finger pointed in the blonde's direction.

Gaia flashed her another wide smile and stuck her two thumbs up in the air.

"Don't call it a loony bin, Rena!" She called out to the retreating figure.

The red locks of hair got lost in the sea of doctors and paramedics and Gaia could only hope Serena heard her. Laughing to herself she turned around and started making her way around the hospital. Walking into the place where she could help people.

And Serena Wilson was just walking into the first turn of events for the evening.

"Hey, April what do we have?" The Wilson flashed April a smile following the action.

She handed Serena the charts as they got to work.

. . .

Gaia still sat in Meredith's room waiting. It felt as though all she ever did in her life was wait. She was getting quite tired of it if she was being honest. Patience was not the girl's strong suit. Meredith seemed to be sleeping, or in the woman's words just resting her eyes for a minute while she thought about what she was having for lunch. She said she could think better that way and told the blonde to shake her immediately if anything happened while she was resting her eyes.

She looked quite peaceful and snuggled up in the hospital bed so if anything did happen, the Mitchell girl would not wake her. Meredith had wanted to be discharged today, she tried and tried multiple times to get Bailey to sign the papers, but the way the night was going it looked like she wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.

Sitting in a chair with her head resting on her brought up knees the girl let out a sigh. Her hands tugged at the wishbone necklace that rested on her body. She twisted and pulled at it in an attempt to calm herself down. Gaia was restless. Everyone had told her they didn't need her for anything right now. And sitting in wait made her feel so useless.

She racked her brain for any ideas on what to do with herself. The blonde felt pathetic. She could go eat food. But no how could she eat food while her friends were sitting possibly in line to get fired? She couldn't do that. She could walk around the hospital? No.

Never any good ideas ever so stupid.

Gaia rolled her eyes running her hands through her hair.

Cassidy.

The blonde's body perked up at the name that had popped into her head. She could go visit her! It was perfect. An idea, great.

And as the blonde got up from her chair running out of Meredith's room she had forgotten all about the good idea she had earlier that very same day.

The five senses sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound. Each associated with a part of any typical human body, responsible for sensing one's surrounding environment and sending all that information to the brain. Most people think they're just ordinary things used to eat food or hear an announcement over the loudspeaker at the airport. But the five senses have a much deeper importance and secret that anyone could guess.

You see when someone experiences something traumatic in their life, their five senses are recording everything and on high alert. Many wouldn't notice but the senses remember significant details and program them into the brain locking them shut behind a door to be hidden in darkness. And then...they make you forget.

But they could eventually come back to light on the right circumstances.

If put in a similar setting with similar phrases and actions to one's traumatic event, the door could crack open and spew out little crumbled-up pieces of memories. Therefore making one remember.

"Okay, Cassidy now I want you to close your eyes and take a breath." The young girl sitting in the hospital bed did as she was told eyes now closed.

Gaia was trying her idea. The idea that she couldn't tell anyone about because it would ruin the ideaness.

The blonde doctor was trying to tap into Cassidy's memories today. Memories that the child did not want to remember from that day.

Cassidy wanted to leave the hospital.

She had talked to Gaia multiple times about how she felt. She was just a little girl scared out of her mind who wanted to leave. But her parents thought she was crazy and a threat to herself.

And if they thought that, the young girl couldn't leave the unit if there were even the slightest problems.

Gaia felt horrible. Cassidy wasn't crazy. She was experiencing something horrible in her life that no person should have to, especially at this age. So she was trying everything she could to help.

Gaia didn't want to push the girl today into remembering too much hurt. So they were taking it slow.

Moving into the room, Gaia took a place in front of the hospital bed.

The young girl did as told and took a deep breath. Her parents watched from outside the room at the scene. For this specific practice, the doctor thought it would be better if fewer people were in the room to keep Cassidy the calmest she could be.

"Now I want you to think back to that day."

. . .

"So you stayed with the patient in the trauma room?" A curious Richard Webber asked Lexie Grey sitting in front of of him at the conference table.

She hesitated for a moment unsure of her words then spoke "I—uh yes."

Lexie nodded her head reassuringly trying to convince herself of the situation.

Richard tilted his head. He brought his hands together on the table in front of him and looked at the girl again.

"And who was with Mrs. Becker?"

Lexie looked up with her mouth agape.

"Reed Adamson. And Serena Wilson."

. . .

"So Ms. Wilson were you with Mrs. Becker because we have some accounts that do say so?"

The red-haired girl sat cross-legged in the chair twiddling with her thumbs. She let out a sigh contemplating what to say. Her freckled face was adorned with worry for what was to come.

Looking up she replied.

"Yes, I was. For a moment I was. Dr. Reed had just left to go assist Fr. Torres and I was left with Mrs. Becker and her son."

"So she was your patient?" Richard Webber asked the girl.

Serena sat up straight. Was Mrs. Becker her patient? She racked her mind trying to remember, the day had been so crazy. Serena didn't even remember if she put on matching socks that morning.

The girl cleared her throat shifting in her seat.

"No, I never said that. I said I sat with her for a minute and then—"

The red-haired girl's words were cut off.

"Did Mrs. Becker ever complain of any pain?"

Serena turned her head to one of the members speaking. She cocked her head to the side to answer.

"No." Her words were short and sharp.

There was a silence in the room following her statement. The members sitting across from Serena all cleared their throats taking breaths.

Richard's eyes met his daughter's best friends as he spoke.

"Well, something isn't adding up in this equation."

. . .

before

An erratic Serena Wilson swerved through the doctors working on patients and cries reached her ears. She saw Cristina yell at a child which resulted in him crying. Letting out a huff she started to speed walk over to them. Cristina picked up the little boy and walked right past her.

Cristina then went over to Lexie Grey with the child and started talking to her. Serena watched the exchange with a confused expression. She saw Lexie start to walk away into Trauma 2 leaving Cristina and the child behind before she stopped.

Serena saw Lexie's face drop as she looked at what she was going into. The young boy with burns all over him screaming and crying in pain. Serena knew Lexie couldn't handle it. She watched her turn back around and take the kid.

Serena stood in the hallway contemplating her mind's words. Without a second thought, she ran over to Lexie and grabbed her shoulder.

"Hey." The Grey turned around with a sad expression.

"I can cover you in trauma 2. You got the kid?" She tilted her head to the Grey.

And Lexie's face let out a look of relief immediately.

"Uh—yea thank you Serena I owe you." Lexie's face looked fallen.

"No problem. I'll add it to the list." Serena called out as she walked over to the door of Trauma 2, nodding at Lexie's half smile at her.

Before she even opened the door the Wilson girl heard the screams and cries. With her hand on the knob, she took a deep breath and made her way into the room.

Serena observed the scene and walked to stand beside Mark. He turned his face to her hands still working on the patient.

"Red what are you doing in here? Where's Grey?" His brows furrowed.

"Taking over for Lexie." She answered simply.

There was a pause.

"Alright. You got steady hands?" Mark spoke to her while looking down at the burn patient.

"I think you know the answer to that." The red-headed girl whispered trying not to let another certain person in the room hear.

With a shake of his head, Mark guided Serena's hand onto the patient.

. . .

Gaia Mitchell sat yet again with Meredith in her hospital room. She had visited Cassidy she had done anything she could think of and now she was waiting.

April Kepner had been fired. She was the one who had made the mistake of not checking Mrs. Beckers's throat for anything which resulted in her death. All of the questions and stress from the day was over. The other residents were relieved that it wasn't them. But Gaia felt horrible.

She began to drift off to sleep when a commotion awoke her. Miranda Bailey walked into the room with discharge papers, Derek following close behind.

Gaia got up from her chair with a stretch and started to walk out of the room.

"Hey, I'm gonna head out now." She gripped Meredith's arm with a squeeze. The Grey flashed her a smile along with Miranda and Derek as she walked away.

Gaia let out a long sigh. Putting her hands in her pockets she slowly took step by step through the hallway with her head down.

"Oh, what did I tell you about these things Bambi? I'm always right." Serena Wilson came into Gaia's view walking straight towards her.

She flashed her a smile and linked their arms together.

"I feel terrible for April." The blonde spoke.

Serena gave her a knowing look.

The two started talking as they made their way out of Seattle Grace for the day. Leaving one drama-filled day behind them each time they walked passed the threshold of the doors.

Today's happened to result in pain.
