Chapter 5
It had now been a couple weeks since the incident, and Brooklyn and Anna had been fully recovered. Brooklyn did his best to talk to Elsa on the first week, knocking gently on her door.
"Elsa? It's me, Brooklyn. Can I see you? Please?" He begged, feeling sadness inside at the fact she had to have her own room and to be kept away from him and her sister.
But the door didn't open. Brooklyn sighed, a sad look on his face before leaving.
He ventured into the ballroom to see Anna who was sitting in the center, looking sad. Brooklyn sighed, joining to sit with her.
"Where's my sister, Brooklyn? I miss her." Anna whimpered. She had a white stripe on her hair that Brooklyn didn't remember from before like how his blue one appeared. He just gave her a hug.
"I- She's needing her privacy. Your parents told me when I woke. I'll still be here for you, though," he said softly. Anna cried into his arms.
"Want my sister!" She sobbed. Brooklyn didn't reply anymore after that, just trying to comfort the child best as he could.
....
And so it carried on even further from there; Elsa remaining in her room and shutting both her sister and guardian out. Anna today was to make another attempt to talk to her sister after waking and seeing snow falling down. Brooklyn smiled at the sight of the snow, but sad he couldn't have his clan with him still. It made it all the more upsetting with this separation from the one daughter he had formed a close bond with.
Following Anna but staying out of the way this time Brooklyn watched Anna knock rhythmically on the door, and she then sang a tune to encourage Elsa to come out.
"Do you want to build a snowman? Come on, lets go and play! We never see you anymore, it's like you've gone away!
We three used to be best buddies! But now we're not! I wish you would tell us why! Do you want to build a snowman? It doesn't have to be a snowman!"
But then Brook's ears perked up, hearing Elsa. But all she said was;
"Go away, Anna!"
A frown showed on his face, looking down. Anna frowned too. "Okay, by..." she whispered, turning to leave. She saw Brooklyn who stepped out, a little smile there but his eyes saddened.
"Keep trying, I know we will see her again sooner or later..." he said melancholy, taking her hand and squeezing it. Anna sniffled, nodding.
She kept on doing her best to talk to Elsa, but every time Elsa shunned her or remained quiet. Near the holidays (Brooklyn had learned of their traditional holiday celebration that had happened many times before his arrival) Anna had wanted to make a card.
Brooklyn helped with the one thing Anna remembered from their times together: their snowman Olaf. They made a special Olaf card for Elsa on that Christmas Eve after the Yule Bell was rung, slipping the card under the door once Anna did her knocking. Brook gave a smile, a hand on the door, imagining Elsa opening it.
"Merry Christmas, Elsa," he said softly, head on the door with his eyes closed. On the other side, Elsa could feel Brooklyn and her sister's presence, tears falling down her face.
....
Another several months rolled by, lonely ones. The girls had grown quite a few inches, Brooklyn remaining their guardian even with Elsa still shut in her room. Anna now 10 years old went to try again to coax her sister out, Brooklyn waiting with her when doing her rhythmic knocking.
"Do you want to build a snowman? Or ride our bikes around the halls?" Brook watched in amusement when he saw Anna balance on her bike then fall off.
"I think some company is overdue, I started talking to the pictures on the walls! Hang in there Joan! It gets a little lonely, all these empty rooms, just watching the hours tick by..." she watched a clock ticking, Brooklyn's sorrow for missing Elsa growing again. How much longer should they do this?
Teen Anna looked at Brooklyn in sadness. Despite their continuing tradition of slipping Elsa their Olaf presents it wasn't the same as really spending time together, just the three of them. "When will Mother say Elsa can come out? It's been too long!" She complained. Brooklyn flapped his wings. "S-she must have reasons, I'm sure, but she still won't tell me," he responded. He had done his best to remember before being unconscious but nothing came to his brain.
I wish I can remember! He thought sadly, rubbing his eyes and groaning. All Brooklyn could do now was to keep his faith in that he could see Elsa again. Meanwhile Elsa had been growing more afraid of her ice magic, even not wanting to touch her parents.
....
Several years later; Anna and Elsa had grown quite big, nearly adults. Brooklyn smiled at how graceful Anna looked now, but wished he could see Elsa grown too. She tried to talk to her sister, but this time didn't, walking past the door. Brooklyn was confused.
"Anna, what's wrong?" He askex. Anna shrugged. "What's the point of trying when all that is to reply is a door in my face?" She asked softly, looking sad. Brooklyn gazed at the door, then hugged her again, knowing she needed it right now. But then the King and Queen called to them, saying they're going on a trip.
Brooklyn was to remain and guard the princesses. He bowed, accepting the task while the parents were away. Anna hugged her mother and father. "See you in two weeks!"
But when Elsa said goodbye to them, Brooklyn wound up glimpsing at her when passing where they were, eyes round.
She was beautiful; hair done up in braids wrapped around her head, face graceful but sad. Elsa bowed to her parents, a frown on her.
"Do you have to go?" She asked in a choked tone. Agnarr smiled. "You'll be fine, Elsa." He said gently. They left then, leaving Elsa. Brook knew this was his chance, stepping from his hiding spot. She turned, gasping at the sight of her guardian, who had a smile on his beak.
"Elsa, it's ok, it's only me. I miss you, it's been too long." He pleaded, heart aching. She backed away.
"No, no. Don't come any closer... I beg of you..." she gasped, a hand on her chest. Brook noted her gloves, wondering why she wore them. He took another step.
"Me and Anna just want you back together with us. This could be our chance to try, please!" Brooklyn tried more, reaching with his hand. Elsa shook her head, going to run. Brook ran after her. "Stop, please, I don't want you to hide away anymore!" He cried, Elsa covering her ears, reaching the door to her room, slamming it shut. Brook reached the door, a hand on it, tears spilling down. It was his only chance and he blew it!
"Elsa...?" He asked, only to be met with silence. Brook gritted his teeth in anger and sadness, hands balled into fists, slamming one of them gently on the door, stalking away.
Anna had heard the commotion but just missed her sister, only seeing Brooklyn looking sad and angry, stalking towards his room. She reached out hesitantly. "Brook? What's wrong?" She asked, only to be answered with a growl. "Nothin'. Just leave me alone..." he grumbled, not looking at Anna who was feeling dejected now, her parents leaving, Elsa still hiding, and now Brooklyn wanting to be alone too. She didn't know what to feel.
In Brooklyn's room Brook reached his bed, a blank stare on his face before he sat down, taking his pillow, some leftover tears showing, burying his face into it, not sure how much more of this isolation he could take, body shuddering when letting loose a good cry.
....
Two weeks went by too slowly for the trio. Brooklyn paced in his room, anxiously waiting for the King and Queen's return, until a knock in his door was heard. He perked up. They must be back! Brook thought in happiness, running to answer the door.
But it was only a messenger; he had a despondent look on his face. Brook felt worried. Where were Agnarr and Iduna?
"Do the King and Queen want to see me? Are they back yet?" Brooklyn pressed in a stressed manner. The messenger hastily pulled out a letter, swallowing from the gargoyle's presence since he didn't see much of this creature.
"I-I bring sorrowful news of their Majesties. Their ship sank far out at sea. There were no survivors. The King and Queen are dead," the messenger revealed.
This sent cold shock through Brook's core, face feeling pale. After everything, all the kindness he received from them, Agnarr and Iduna were gone. Anna and Elsa are now on their own...
His legs felt like jelly after hearing this news. "T-thank you..." he mumbled softly, the messenger taking his leave. Brooklyn closed the door, still feeling that cold sadness from the shock of the news pulsating inside his body, sitting on the bed, wondering what he was going to do now. They had promised Brooklyn they would return him home, and now that spark of hope was quenched. Tears again began to fall, wiping his eyes and sniffling, wondering how to break this news to Anna and Elsa.
....
Anna herself had been in the portrait room, a bored and sad look on her face with being unable to have her sister and parents until she saw her friend come. Brooklyn looked greatly troubled and grieved, looking at Anna in sadness. She ran to him.
"What's wrong? Where are my parents?" She asked. Brooklyn didn't speak, unable too, just going to hug her, wrapping Anna in his wings. She was confused but then took in his actions: her parents were dead. Brooklyn looked down to her.
"Their ship sank, they drowned," he said shakily. Anna found that hard to take in, tears in her eyes too when burying her face into Brooklyn's hug.
....
A funeral was held for the passed King and Queen a couple days later, everybody gathered at their memorials since they didn't have the bodies. Anna and Brooklyn both stood together, heads bowed when the priest said some words about their lives.
When the funeral was over Anna and Brooklyn found themselves by Elsa's door, knowing they had to tell her since she didn't hear the news or came to the funeral. Brooklyn let Anna talk this time, still not over from his and Elsa's previous encounter. Anna knocked.
"Elsa? Please, we know you're in there, people have been asking where you've been. They say have courage, and I'm trying to, just let us in. We only have each other, it's just the three of us, what are we gonna do?"
She sniffled, her back on the door, head facing away. Before asking a question that felt childish now, but Brooklyn's heart twanged when hearing it.
"Do you wanna build a snowman...?" Anna sunk down to the floor, hiding her head in her legs. Brooklyn then put his hand on the door, as though he could feel Elsa's sadness and thought he heard her crying, too. His own head thumped softly onto the door, heart feeling broken. Their family felt so broken now, and he was still homesick for Manhattan, next sitting with Anna and comforting her in his wing hug again. They stayed there for a long time, just trying to console each other.
