Chapter 10
Another few miles of walking made the trip slower without the cart now, as well as a new member added to their group. Brooklyn still couldn't get over that there was a talking snowman among them now, gazing at some tall curved rocks covered in snow and long sharp icicles. One nearly had poked his arm, making him gasp a bit before moving out of the way.
Kristoff had a question. "So, how exactly are you two planning to stop this weather?" He asked. Brooklyn himself didn't have the answer but Anna did.
"I am gonna talk to my sister," she stated smugly. Brooklyn took her hand. "We better make sure not to scare her like last time, Anna," he advised while Kristoff was confused. "That's it? My ice business is riding on you talking to your sister?" He too nearly got stabbed by an icicle on his nose but stopped himself on time, moving away. "So you two aren't at all afraid of her?"
Brooklyn shook her head. "No, she had only been reacting to others misjuding her, she isn'r scary," he said. Olaf just grinned. "Yeah. I bet she is the nicest, gentlest, warmest person ever!" The group saw him being impaled in the chest by another icicle but he didn't die. Olaf saw. "Oh, look at that; I've been impaled!" He giggled, making Brooklyn roll his eyes and pulled him out before they moved on.
After another hour they finally reached the bottom of the North Mountain. Brooklyn's beak fell open at how big it was. Kristoff looked it over. "It's too steep, I've only got one rope. Brooklyn, can't you fly?" The red one shook his head. "No, we glide mostly. And the updrafts trying to get up that high will strain my wings. But I can climb," he said. Kristoff looked impressed. "But Anna, she doesn't know how to climb mountains, right?"
"Says who?" Anna demanded. Brooklyn turned, before getting Kristoff to look too; seeing Anna trying to climb. With no talons she was toast, Brooklyn knew, ears falling.
Kristoff raised his brow. "What are you doing?" Anna pulled up more. "I'm going to see my sister!"
Brooklyn shook his head. "You're going to kill yourself!" He said in his Guardian mode. Anna ignored them, trying to find a footing, only until Olaf came from around a corner.
"Um, guys, not sure if this is going to solve the problem but I found a staircase that leads exactly where you want to go!" He revealed.
Elsa's ice, for sure, Brooklyn thought, while Anna smiled. "Thank goodness! Catch!" She threw herself off. Brooklyn went to do it but Kristoff beat him, making the gargoyle frown slightly. He was supposed to be the protector!
Anna patted his chest. "Thanks! Kind of a crazy trust exercise!" She said before following the snowman. Brooklyn wanted to speak but kept it in for now, just holding his arms while looking down, slowly keeping up behind them.
But what they saw next around the corner made Brooklyn forget his jealousy. His eyes bulged at what lay before him. It was a huge castle made of ice, with the bridge Olaf mentioned! His beak dropped again at that, amazed that Elsa actually built this! Kristoff looked ready to cry. "Now that's ice... I'm gonna cry," he sniffled.
Anna grinned. "Go ahead. I won't judge," she said. Brooklyn himself had no words while he, Anna and Olaf went up. He looked back to see Sven having trouble but Kristoff told him to stay, catching up.
Brook felt his hands along the railing, smiling at how smooth it was until they approached the main castle doors, all of sudden nervous again, shaking slightly. Anna looked nervous too, raising her hand to knock.
"Knock. Just knock," Olaf encouraged. He looked at the others. "Why isn't she knocking? You think she knows how to knock?" Brook just rolled his eyes again, putting a hand on Anna's shoulder.
"Go on, I'm here," he said. She smiled slightly, finally knocking on the door but it opened by itself, startling them. "Ok, self opening ice doors, not suspicious at all," Brooklyn said, he and Anna backing up a bit before eventually proceeding in, asking Olaf and Kristoff to wait outside.
It was dazzling to the eyes on the inside. The interior structure of the ice walls and even a chandelier were stunning. Brooklyn smiled at how Elsa was able to construct this place. He nearly slipped on the floor from being lost in the beauty of it all but used his talons to catch himself.
"Elsa? Are you here?" He called softly but somewhat loudly.
"It's us!" Anna said when she nearly slipped, too. Then another voice came.
"Anna? Brooklyn?" Brooklyn glanced up at the top of the stairs, swallowing when seeing his love again. She had changed: wearing an ice blue dress and shoes, hair in a braid down her right shoulder. His heart fluttered like crazy while looking at her up and down, blushing.
Elsa smiled but looked surprised to see them. "Whoa, Elsa, you look different." Brook said in a dazed tone, smiling too. She raised her brow. "I-I mean good different. Not well, uh..."
Anna came to his rescue. "This place is amazing!" She complimented. Elsa smiled again. "Thank you. I never knew what I was capable of."
"Listen, I'm sorry about what happened," Anna apologized. Brook nodded. "Yeah, we should've known," he said, glancing down. Elsa shook her head. "No, it's ok. You don't have to apologize. But you two should probably go, please!"
Brooklyn wouldn't leave. "No, Elsa. We came all this way to bring you home. I would search everywhere for you." He claimed. That made Elsa blush now. "It's sweet of you but it won't work. You all belong down in Arendelle."
"So do you," Anna argued. Elsa looked away. "No, Anna. I belong up here, alone. Where I can be who I am without hurting anybody."
The red gargoyle moved closer slowly. "I don't want you to be alone up here, Elsa." He pleaded. Anna looked a bit nervous about Elsa's last sentence. "And actually about that last part—."
"59, 60!" Came Olaf's voice, making Brook cringe. Not yet, not now, he said, as Olaf ran in cheerfully. "Hi! I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"
Elsa stared. "Olaf?" She asked. Brook shook his head at him. "Olaf, please go back outside..." he said but the snowman ignored him. "You built me. Remember that?" He asked with his smile. "And you're alive?" Elsa said in confusion. Olaf looked himself over. "Yeah, uh, I think so," he concluded, making Elsa gaze at her own hands. Anna knelt near him. "He's just like the one we built as kids," she said. Elsa nodded. "Yeah."
Brooklyn gazed at her desperately. "Elsa, Anna and I miss being close like we did before. We can be like that again." He said, holding out his hand to her. But Elsa wound up having a memory of her hurting both Anna and Brooklyn, making her back away. "No. We can't. Goodbye," she said shakily.
Anna wouldn't give up. "You don't have to protect us! We're not afraid! Please don't shut me out again,
Please don't slam the door
You don't have to keep your distance anymore."
Elsa kept on trying to get away from them with going up the stairs. Anna and Brooklyn both followed her.
'"Cause for the first time in forever,
We finally understand
For the first time in forever,
We can fix this hand in hand."
Brooklyn:
"We can head down this mountain together!
You don't have to live in fear...
'Cause for the first time in forever
I will be right here!"
But she was still in denyal. "Anna, Brooklyn,
Please go back home
Your life awaits
Go enjoy the sun
And open up the gates."
Anna nodded. "Yeah, but-" she was going to tell her, which caused Brook's ears to lower at that. She wouldn't be happy.
"I know! You mean well, but leave me be
Yes, I'm alone but I'm alone and free!
Just stay away and you'll be safe from me!"
Brooklyn cringed. "Actually, we're not!"
"What do you mean you're not?" Elsa asked.
"I get the feeling you don't know!" Anna said.
"What do I not know?"
The red gargoyle's tail twitched from nerves as he said it. "A-Arendelle's in deep deep... snow..." he explained, looking down. Elsa was startled and scared as Brooklyn expected. "What?!" She gasped in disbelief. Brook nodded. "Er, yeah. You sort of set off an Eternal Winter everywhere," he said, looking down. Elsa looked mortified. "Everywhere?"
Anna stepped in. "That's ok! You can just unfreeze it!" Unbeknownst to them it began to snow. "No I can't!" Elsa argued. "I don't know how!" Brooklyn moved closer. "Please, Elsa. I know you have it in you!" He said.
Anna:
"'Cause for the first time in forever,"
Elsa:
"I'm such a fool!
I can't be free!"
Brooklyn:
"You don't have to be afraid..."
"No escape from the storm inside of me..."
"We can work this out together..."
"I can't control the curse!"
The snow Elsa was making got worse as she got more afraid. The wind blew into Brooklyn as he kept trying to get to her. "
Anna:
"We'll reverse the storm you've made"
"No, Anna, Brooklyn, you'll only make it worse!"
"Don't panic..."
"There's so much fear!"
Brooklyn smiled encouragingly and gently. "We'll make the sun shine bright!"
"You two aren't safe here!"
"All of us would face this thing together!"
Elsa looked agitated; holding her fists to her forehead, turning around. "No!"
"We can change this winter weather! And Everything would be alright..." Brooklyn said, still reaching out with his hand.
"I CAN'T!!" Elsa finished, causing the blizzard to turn into ice blasts.
Brook's eyes rounded, eyes glowing from the danger. "Anna, get down!" He shouted, shoving her to the floor. But it came with a price for him. An ice blast struck his chest, making him cry out in pain; his chest glowing blue for a moment before it disappeared. He flinched, shutting his eyes, a hand holding his chest, legs shaky.
Elsa opened her eyes, as Anna looked over to her guardian who had sunk to his knees, gripping his chest and gritting his teeth. Anna was terrified. "Brooklyn!" She exclaimed, going over to support him. Elsa herself was overly scared that she had hurt her guardian a third time, tears in her eyes. She knew now she didn't deserve someone like Brooklyn if she kept hurting him.
Brooklyn had laid down on the floor for a moment, his chest so cold, making him shake, as Kristoff and Olaf joined them, eyes round at the sight. "Anna! Are you ok? But, what about Brooklyn? He's hurt!"
The red male stood, woozily but managed to catch his breath. He kept his hand on his chest, though. "M'alright, fine..." he said softly, looking at Elsa in sadness from the attack. I know she doesn't mean it still. She doesn't... he said inside.
Elsa looked at Kristoff. "W-who's this? It-it doesn't matter. You have to get out of here." Anna shook her head. "No! I know we can figure this out together!" She said while Kristoff held Brooklyn. Elsa shook her head. "Yes, you are!" She shot her ice magic; causing it to swirl around, forming something. Brooklyn's eyes widened when they saw the final result.
It was a giant snowman, much bigger than Olaf with thickset hands that had icicles for fingers. Brooklyn's eyes glowed and he and the others yelled out when it picked them up, taking them outside.
The three minus Olaf struggled. "Stop! Put us down!" Anna yelled. "Go away!" The snowman bellowed, tossing them down the stairs. Brook grunted multiple times going down it, still holding his chest until they landed, Sven's tongue
The big snowman still had Olaf (well his head and body separated at least). "Heads up!" Olaf called to them. The trio ducked, Olaf's head hitting the rock. "Watch out for my butt!" He added, as the big snowman threw that, too. That pissed off Anna but all Brooklyn wanted to do was get away from this guy. "It is not nice to throw people!" Anna snarled. Brooklyn grabbed her arm. "No, don't do it!" He said sharply to her. Kristoff grabbed Anna too.
"Hold it, feisty pants. Just calm down! Let the snowman be!" He said. Anna at first seemed to settle down. "I'm calm..." she said, making the red gargoyle sigh in relief. But it was short lived when Anna turned, throwing the snowball. He cringed when it hit the big snowman in his shoulder. It only angered him as Brooklyn expected, his eyes glowing, and more ice showing on his shoulders.
Kristoff frowned. "Now you made him mad!" Brook shook his head. "You should've just walked away," he said, while Anna flushed. "I'll distract him. You guys go!" Olaf said. They made a break for it, Sven able to catch up with them. But Olaf's lower body began to run after them, leaving its head behind. "No! No! Not you guys!" Olaf yelled before his head fell into the snow.
"This just got a whole lot harder."
...
Meanwhile Anna, Brooklyn, Kristoff and Sven kept on running until they stumbled down a slippery cliff. Brooklyn didn't even have time to open up his wings to stop himself as they kept sliding to the bottom, the big snowman charging after them after jumping down the cliff.
Brooklyn then saw one of the snow laden trees and had an idea. Smirking he grabbed the end of it. "What are you doing?!" Anna shrieked, as Brooklyn let it go, having it to smack the big snowman in the face, knocking him down.
Kristoff grinned. "Nice one!" He praised Brooklyn who smiled back, before they halted at the edge of a steep cliff. Brooklyn knew he could glide down but he had to ensure the others could make it.
Anna gulped at the sight of the edge. "It's a 100 foot drop!" She said. Kristoff shook his head as he took out a rope. "It's 200." He wrapped the rope around her waist and began digging in the snow too. "Uh, what are you doing?" Asked Brooklyn. "Making a snow anchor to hold the rope when we climb down."
But Brooklyn shook his head. "I can glide you down, that doesn't look safe," he said. Kristoff looked at him with slight mistrust. "Not that I don't completely believe you but we can't waste time with you carrying all of us. And you got hit by Elsa too. We have to be careful."
This made Brook frown but then gave in, nodding. As long as Kristoff knew what to do whenever flying wasn't an option. Anna was nervous though. "But what if we fall?" She asked.
"It'll be 20 feet of fresh powder down there so it will be like landing on a pillow. Hopefully. Or he can catch you," he said, nodding at Brooklyn who sighed a bit from that in gratitude. But then crashing was heard. The group got ready to jump when a tree ruined it, smashing in front of them. The force blew Brooklyn away but he managed to grab the rock wall with his talons, looking around to see Anna having already jumped, dragging Kristoff with her, making him roll his eyes.
After a few minutes though large hands took hold of their rope, as well as Olaf falling down. Brook's eyes widened when watching his friends getting pulled upward, seeing the giant snowman glaring at the two.
"DON'T COME BAAACK!" He roared. Anna took out a knife. "We won't!" She cut the rope.
"Anna!" Brook screamed as he let go and dove down after her, ignoring the ice feeling in his chest. With luck he grabbed her, raising his wings to steady them. She held on, smiling up at her guardian as Kristoff landed feet first in the snow, while Brooklyn landed Anna gently on the ground. Kristoff panted. "See? Told you you'd catch her. And just like a pillow here for me," he said, grunting when trying to pull hinself up.
Somehow Olaf's top body was on Kristoff's legs. "I can't feel my legs! I can't feel my legs!" Kristoff shook his head. "Those are my legs!" He said. They managed to put Olaf back together, Kristoff wincing from a light bump when they pulled Kristoff out of the snow.
"Your head," Anna said. "Oh, ah, I'm good. I've got a thick skull."
Olaf stared at them. "I don't have a skull. Or bomes," he said, making Brooklyn roll his eyes. "That's 'cause you're made of snow," he stated the obvious. Olaf smiled sheepishly.
"You ok?" Kristoff asked Anna. She nodded, gazing up at him before she had a revelation. "Oh, what are we gonna do? She threw us out! We can't go back to Arendelle like this and there's your ice business—!"
Kristoff just smiled. "Don't worry about my ice business. But uh, you should worry about Brooklyn's hair," he said, when he looked up at him.
Brook tilted his head. "What do you mean?" He asked. Anna turned to see; and she gasped. "What's wrong with you guys?" Brooklyn asked grumpily. Anna pointed. "Y-your hair, it's turning blue," she pointed out. Brooklyn looked at the stripe he had on him like usual but saw it was thicker than it had been. "W-what?" He exclaimed in fear.
Kristoff looked concerned. "It was when she struck you, isn't it?" He questioned. The red gargoyle wrapped his wings around him, looking away. "Uh, does it look bad guys?" He asked nervously. They looked at one another. "N-no," Kristoff said with hesitation. Olaf lifted up his head. "You hesitated," he said. Kristoff glared. "No! I didn't!"
Anna took her guardian's arm. "It'll be ok, Brook. We'll get you help, if there's anyone who knows about this," she said. Kristoff's eyes then lit up in knowlege.
"I know someone who can. Come on," he said. Olaf had a dumb grin. "Kay! Where are we going?"
Kristoff smiled. "To see my friends." Brooklyn stayed put while Anna realized who he was talking about. "The love experts?"
Brooklyn shook his head. "Love lessons won't fix my problem!" He said out of nerves. But Kristoff looked certain about it. "Trust me, they can fix you," he promised. Anna herself was unsure, too. "How do you know?"
"Because I've seen them do it before," Kristoff revealed. Brooklyn was still nervous but knew that he had no choice but to trust Kristoff, allowing Anna and Kristoff to lead him to whoever can heal his problem and maybe, a way back to his clan if they did have magic.
