ITU Chapter 1: 2 Years Later
Taco clutched her scarf, smiling brightly. It fluttered in the wind, as she ran down the street with Firey. The two of them were heading to the abandoned mansion.
"You have the games, right?" She asked Firey, who nodded. "Yeah! Cards, and Charades too!" He said, as they walked up the steps to the entrance.
Taco opened the door, seeing Coiny and Pin sitting on the couch together. They smiled at the two of them as they walked in. "Hey guys!" Pin said, waving.
Firey waved back, setting the games down on the coffee table. "Is Four trying to get Leafy to come down?" He asked, and Coiny nodded. "Yeah..." He frowned slightly.
"It's been two years..." He said, as Pin held his hand. "You would think she would be better by now..." Taco sighed. "We all know the parasite was draining her." She started.
"That thing fed of negative emotions, when it left, they all came flooding back at once." Taco looked away. "We'd be lucky if she was better by next year."
Firey frowned leaning on the armrest. "I just hope she'll be up for tonight's games." He smiled softly, putting his hand in the pocket of his jacket.
Taco could tell there was something in the pocket other than his hand, but didn't want to press him about it. "Sorry we're late." A familiar voice said.
Four entered the room, holding hands with Leafy. She seemed distant. Firey glanced at her discretely. Taco did too, but found her gaze lingered longer than him.
She was still half orange, not changing a bit since that day she was unfrozen. Her eyes looked empty, no emotion to be found. She walked over to the couch, setting between Pin and Firey.
Firey tensed slightly, a light blush on his face. Leafy yawned, as Four knelt beside the table. "Okay...so, we have a lot of great options!"
He said, smiling. "Charades, anyone?" He asked, holding up the cards. Everyone agreed, even Leafy gave in and nodded slightly. Four stood up, summoning something in his hands.
It took a while for everyone to get used to the fact that he had powers, but once they found out, Four felt comfortable using them around everyone more often.
"Let's draw straws to see who goes first!" He said, passing around the straws. Taco got the longest straw by accident, Coiny, Firey and Pin had a tie, Leafy had the smallest, and Four was the second longest.
Taco stood up, taking a card. "Oh this'll be easy!" She smiled, putting the card face down on the table. She started to wave her arms, swaying them side to side.
"Tree!" Coiny yelled out, and Taco nodded. "Yep!" She sat down, and Four went next. He took a card, and smirked. He dropped it, and started to slink around.
He bared his teeth, clawing at the air with both hands. "Badger!" He shook his head. "Cat!" He shook his head again. "Evil Leafy!" Pin called out.
He stared at her with a deadpan expression. Leafy sighed. "Panther?" She asked, and Four nodded. "Yeah..." Pin winced slightly, nervously laughing. "Sorry Leafy."
Leafy looked at her. "It's fine, I'm used to it." Pin flinched, looking away slightly. "I'm next!" Firey got up, intentionally breaking the tension.
He grabbed a card, and dropped it. He raised his arms in the air, like he was reaching for something. Everyone started to cry out their guesses.
As Leafy was about to tell her guess, she heard a voice.
"Ah-Ah Ah-Ahhhh"
She froze, eyes widening. She spun around, looking behind her. The voice was high pitched, but faint. Like it was calling from far away.
"Ah-Ah Ah-Ahhhh"
Leafy closed her eyes, as she started to hear a heartbeat. It pounded as she started to hear whispers. The world felt like it was closing in on her.
"Leafy!" She gasped as she was dragged back into reality. She turned to face Taco, who was standing in front of her with a worried look on her face.
"Leafy...are you okay?" Leafy quickly stood up, a fake smile on her face. "I'm fine!" She said, as she quickly grabbed a card. Before she could read it, Four grabbed her hand.
"We know better than that." He sighed. "You haven't smiled in months, what is it?" Leafy's breath hitched, as she tried to think of an excuse.
"Okay! I'm not okay!" She admit. "I...I miss my snowflakes." She said, not exactly lying. "We couldn't find them anywhere the first time we went back..."
Everyone looked at her with sympathy. Firey got up, walking over to her. "I'm sorry Leafy." He started. "We looked everywhere for them, it's like they just vanished off the face of the earth!"
Taco smiled at her. "If they are still around, I'm sure they're fine." Leafy looked at her, and Taco felt her heart beat faster. "I know we'll find them eventually."
Then, the unimaginable happened. Leafy smiled, and it was genuine.
Leafy laid in bed, peacefully sleeping. No one was in her room, and it was dark. Her window was open, and her drapes stood still. Suddenly, they started to blow gently.
A fine mist swirled in the air, hovering over Leafy.
"Ah-Ah Ah-Ahhhh"
Leafy groaned, covering her head with her pillow. The voice didn't stop.
"Ah-Ah Ah-Ahhhh"
Leafy sharply sat up, glaring at the mist. She swiped at it like an angry panther. "Shut up!" She hissed, as the mist surrounded her. "I don't know what you are, but leave!"
The mist continued to surround her. She growled. "That's it." She got out of bed, walking out of her room. Walking down the hall, she opened the broom closet.
Smirking, she pulled out a broom, turning to face the mist. "Still wanna play?~" she teased. The mist flew away from her, and she chased it. "Oh don't leave yet! Things are getting good!"
She swiped at it with a broom, chuckling. Leafy chased it out the front door, and it flew into the sky. She smiled triumphantly, holding the broom like a staff.
"And stay out!" She started to go back inside, only to see Four standing on the third step. He looked at her, one eyebrow raised. "What are you doing out here?" He asked.
Leafy sweat nervously, smiling. "Uhhh..." She shrugged. "Chasing away mice...?" Four sighed, rolling his eyes. "Okay, sure. Let's go with that."
He walked inside, motioning for her to follow. "There's something I want to talk to you about." She followed him, all the way to the couch.
"...It's possible your snowflakes are...dead." He slowly spoke, putting a hand on her shoulder. Leafy stared at him, shaking her head in disbelief.
"No...No. Why do you say that?" She asked. Four avoided eye contact with her. "During our research," he started, "we have never had a case where someone has survived the parasite."
Leafy listened carefully. "But, it's possible that when your powers are gone, that some things you created with them will disappear too."
He pat Leafy on the back. "Come on, you need your sleep." He said as he took her to her room. Four gently nudged her to her room. Leafy walked inside, closing the door.
Sitting on the bed, she sighed, an icy cold chill wafting over the room.
"I'm going to have to tell them soon..."
