Chapter 2: Snow Day
Once Leafy got back home, she mentally beat herself up. "What was that?!" She scolded. "Someone was willingly talking to you, and you ran!" She felt like crying even more, covering her eyes.
"Although...she probably didn't really care about me..." She sighed. "She just wanted me to stop standing there by the gate." She shook her head. "What has gotten into you?! Why have I been having so many negative thoughts?"
Leafy glared at her hands, then at the window. "I'm not giving up so soon! Maybe I should just start off small..." Looking out the window, she noticed a familiar red figure walking out of the park.
She smiled. "My old friend! Er- Alliance member..." She said, slightly frowning at the last bit. "She probably wants nothing to do with me..." She thought. She forced the thought out of her head, smiling.
"It wouldn't hurt to make an attempt!" She started to leave the mansion, her body aching with every step. It bothered her somewhat, but she tried to ignore it. Once she was out of the mansion, she made her way over to Pin's house.
She knocked on the door, using the same knocking pattern that they made up years ago. A few minutes passed, before Pin opened the door. She winced, but Leafy didn't notice. "Hey Pin! I know it's been forever, but do you wanna hang out?"
Pin nervously looked around, smiling. "Oh gee, I would...but I am just so busy!" She said, looking behind her. Leafy's smile faltered a bit. "Oh...what about tomorrow?" She asked. "Busy too, I'm so busy my entire week is completely filled!"
Leafy clasped her hands together. "O-Oh... I see." Leafy, with a bit of hope still clinging to her, asked one last question. "Is there any way you'd be able to hang out some other time?"
Pin thought for a moment, getting a sly idea. "Maybe I can hang out the next snow day." Leafy smiled. "Okay! I'm looking forward to it!" She walked back to the abandoned mansion, not hearing Pin sigh in relief.
When she got back, she smiled. "The next snow day! Oh wow, I can't wait!" She walked over to one of the portraits on the wall, looking up at it. "You hear that Steve?" She sat in the chair next to it.
"Pin is gonna hang out with me on the next snow day!" Leafy paused. Her face fell, and she started to realize something. "It... There has never been a snow day on this island."
Leafy hugged her legs, bringing them to her chest. "Pin lied to me?" She scowled, screaming in anger. She felt hurt. "If she didn't want to see me, why didn't she just say it to my face?!" Leafy started to cry again.
She felt so betrayed, but she knew she shouldn't be surprised. No one liked her, after all. She grit her teeth, clenching her fists in bitter anger. "Looks like it's just you and me." Leafy spoke, slight venom in her voice.
She walked up the stairs, feeling defeated. Once she reached her room, she pulled a blanket and pillow of the bed, returning to the parlor downstairs. She laid them both on a couch across from the portrait of Steve.
"Who needs her anyhow?!" Leafy nearly yelled, tears threatening to spill. "I'm just going to do what I've always done since I've got here!" She folded her arms, sitting on the couch. An angry frown slowly grew on her face.
"I'm sorry I'm so angry Steve, I just can't believe her!" Leafy sighed, calming down slightly. "I just don't understand. Why did she lie about wanting to hang out?" She cast a glance to the side.
"Well, should I start, or do you want to?" Leafy asked the portrait. Silence fell on the room. She sighed. "Yeah, I understand." She laid on the couch, resting her head on the pillow.
"Once upon a time, there was a lonely object. She ruled over a kingdom of snow and ice. She never had friends, and she couldn't make any either." She paused for a moment, looking over at the portrait as if it were talking.
She gasped, blushing slightly. "No! I am not that object! This isn't a vent like you think it is, Steve!" She replied flusteredly. "Anyways, the Snow Queen, as everyone had collectively decided to call her, lived in isolation."
"She has tried many times to make friends in the village down below, but everyone was scared of her. For, in ancient years prior, the Snow Queen was known for a massive mistake she made."
"A long time ago, she seeked revenge on a beast that had done her wrong, in the process, she took out an entire village. No one got hurt, not even the beast, but they did not have anywhere to live after."
"The beast, pretending not to know the Snow Queen, was welcomed with open arms, while she was chased away into a far land. It took several years of traveling around before she found her forever home, in the village mountains."
"The Snow Queen would often visit the village, hoping to make amends with everyone, including the beast. But when she would visit, the beast would condemn the Queen, behind her back, and in front of her face."
"And because everyone trusted the beast, they all blindly hated the Snow Queen. Never did they once ask themselves if she regretted her crimes, no one wondered if she punished herself everyday for them."
Leafy started to grow more solemn, as she started to close the story. "No one went up to her ice fortress. No one wondered if she was okay..." She paused for a minute. "I'm not sure how to end the story..."
She sheepishly smiled at the portrait. "Um, when I do think of an ending, I'll tell you!" Leafy started to cover herself with the blanket. "Anyways, thanks for hanging out, Steve." She closed her eyes, smiling. "Goodnight."
The next day, Leafy woke up cold. She shivered as she wrapped herself with the blanket more. "What in the world?" She mumbled, looking around. She stared at her window, noticing it was completely white.
She gasped, practically leaping off the couch. "No way! Is that what I think it is?" She smiled, rushing to the front door. She nearly tore the door off it's hinges opening it. Leafy's eyes filled with stars as she peered out.
"SNOW?!" She screamed in a mixture of delight and surprise. Immediately running out, she nearly slipped. Everything was covered in a thick layer of snow. She spun around, looking everywhere.
"I can't believe this!" She plopped down into the cold fluff without hesitation. She shivered, but didn't care how cold it was. Leafy was going to make a snow angel no matter what!
She quickly moved her arms, dragging them through the snow, doing the same for her legs. She let out a laugh, as she got up to see her masterpiece. It was pretty typical, given that it was a snow angel and all.
Even if it were pretty typical, Leafy was still pretty proud of herself. Out of the corner of her eye, see noticed a familiar Algebralien standing to the side. Turning completely around, she confirmed it was Four she saw.
He had seen better days, bags under his eyes making him look more tired than usual. Although, it wasn't the worst she had seen of him. His matching blue jacket was almost free of wrinkles.
Four noticed Leafy had spotted him, and sheepishly rubbed the back of his head, looking away. "Sorry." He apologized. "It was just kinda sweet how excited you were about the snow."
He smiled, putting his hands in his pockets. "I've never seen anyone this excited about snow...well..." He silently sighed, breaking eye contact with her. "Almost." He mumbled. Leafy didn't understand that last bit.
She smiled at him, closing her eyes. "It's just, I haven't seen snow in forever!" She placed her hands on her face. "This island isn't supposed to be able to snow!" Four tilted his head, nervously staring at her.
"Right...it isn't supposed to be able to..." He started to walk towards her, replacing the nervous look with a reassuring smile. "You know, you and I really should hang out sometime."
Leafy's eyes basically lit up after he said that. "Y-Yeah! That would be f-fun!" Her face fell slightly. "Oh...but I can't right now... Pin said we could hang out the next snow day!" She seemed even more excited.
A flash of concern flashed across Four's face for a moment, but it quickly disappeared. "Ah, I see. Well, do you want me to walk you there?" He said, holding out his hand. Leafy nodded. "That sounds great!"
She grabbed his hand, feeling the wool of his gloves scratch against hers. She always wondered what was underneath the gloves, if his hands were a different color than the rest of his body.
One glance from Four broke her out of her thoughts. She blushed, realizing she had been staring at his hands for way too long. He chuckled, rolling his eyes. "Hey, I understand. They are great gloves, aren't they?"
Leafy stifled a laugh from the joke, ultimately failing. Four smiled at her laughter, feeling at ease. However, as soon as they stepped upon Pin's doorstep, it shattered. He sighed slightly.
"Here we are!" He announced. "You know, if you change your mind, we could always go somewhere else, I mean, who really needs-" The door opened, as Pin stared at Leafy in disbelief.
"Hey Pin! I was in the neighborhood and-" Pin interrupted. "It actually snowed." Leafy's smile dropped. "...What?" Pin glared at her. "I only said what I did because I didn't think it actually would snow!"
Leafy felt her heart breaking. "But... I thought you had something to do with this! You say you could only hang out when it snows, it never snows here, and suddenly it snows right after you say that?!"
Leafy stared at the ground, nearly crying. "Why would I ever want to hang out with a thief like you?" Pin slammed the door in Leafy's face. For a few moments, Leafy doesn't move.
Just as she starts crying, it starts to snow again. Four hesitantly tried to place a hand on her shoulder, but she ran off before he could. Leafy ran all the way back to her mansion, passing through the empty streets.
Tears blind her, as the sun started to set. She skids to a halt when she spots a familiar orange glow in front of her snow angel. Leafy wipes her tears away, just in time to see Firey glaring at her.
She looked down at where he was standing, and gasped, covering her mouth. Drawn in the snow, next to the head of her snow angel, were demon horns. She looked back at Firey, who shifted his umbrella slightly.
"Demons need to look the part, wouldn't you agree?" He asked in a mocking tone. Leafy stared at him for a few moments, feeling something cold pool in her chest. She coughs slightly, falling to her knees.
Firey suddenly screamed, and a rip was heard. Leafy's head snapped up, seeing Firey's umbrella broken slightly. There were multiple golf-ball sized holes in the fabric. She was confused, until it hit her. Literally.
A hard object fell on her head, making her winced slightly. She looked down, noticing it was hail! Quickly, she ran to her doorstep for cover. She looked around, noticing Firey had run off.
She sighed, the cold feeling returning. Walking back inside, she made her way over to the parlor, setting on the couch. The room was dark, and quiet. The wind wildly blew outside, getting stronger, and stronger with each minute.
"...Hey Steve?" Leafy adressed the portrait. "I know the ending now." She leans on the couch, eventually laying down. "Eventually, someone goes up to her palace. They want to make her pay for what's she's done...but..."
"The Snow Queen is already dead."
