~~~-.-Prologue-.-~~~
The coven had hidden the girl deep in the hull, knowing they would look in the hold first, the the captains quarters, and further until they reached the hull, which would seem empty except for the hunting dogs. The young girl would ride with them until they reached Great Britian, then find a new group. She was no bigger than a twelve year old, and spoke little english. They only knew of her strange abilities and the fact she and her baby brother were being hunted by cold ones. They had nicknamed her Frost, as her unusual pale hair and bright blue eyes. The stench that wafted off her and the boy was similar to the hunting dogs, so the coven had faith they would be safe their.
The boat hit a sand bar in early Dawn and pulled to shore, most of the occupants asleep, the storm from the night before leaving them all exhausted. The soldiers of the queens rule began investigating the boat, starting in the cargo hold, moving their way down the ship. It was a fairly large ship, as the coven was quite massive. When the soldiers reached the hull, they found the hunting dogs asleep, next to sheep and two massive sacks of hay. One went to investigate the hay, only to have a dog jump up and growl viciously. He backed off and nodded that the area was clear. They left the coven alone and allowed them to start unloading. A elder came down and woke the siblings, knocking a bag of hay over top of Frost.
When Frost awoke, she looked at the coven leader and nodded, grabbing the small kid in her arms and fleeing. It was not unusual for young kids to carry infants in Russia, and it seemed to be the same in the small village. Many children carried their siblings as their mother lead them this way and that. Frost grabbed held her brother tighter and pulled her hood on. She spotted two siblings going into the forest a group of kids mocking them. She waited until the group of kids left and carefully followed the two down the path.
When the boy noticed Frost his eyes lit up, like he had been looking for her, finally finding her in his forest. Frost nodded and uncovered her brother, gesturing for help. The sister saw the baby and ran to Frost's side. "Hungry" Frost touched her mouth and the siblings nodded, the brother grabbing Frost's brother and the girl taking Frost's hand in her own.
"My name is Jane, and this is my brother Alec. What's your name? Are you always this pale? Why are your eyes so bright? Are you sick? Are you-" Jane stopped talking when Alec shot her a look. "Sorry, she doesn't make friends often, the other kids think we are spellcasters. Let's start with the formalities. What is your name, and where do you arrive from?" Alec stared at her, having stopped in his track to silence Jane.
"Called Frost by traders. From mother land." Alec looked at the boy in his arms. "And him?" Frost shrugged and waited for the infant to open its eyes, a vibrant green shining in the fading light.
"Let's get you inside. The soldiers don't come here, you'll be safe." Alec nodded and showed her a small cabin nestled against a hillside, a small stream flowing past it. He called to his mother as he entered and welcomed Frost inside before showing his mother the infant. "Our mother is good at healing, she'll make sure he isn't sick. You should remove your hood. It's impolite to have it up." Jane scampered off and sat next to her mother as she checked the infant.
"Mint tea. Mother says it's good for the throat. Here, I'll remove your hood." Alec handed her a small stone cup, and gently pulled her hood off and untied it. He seemed unfazed by her hair. She waited until he was done. "You are very small. What age are you?" Frost counted on her fingers for a moment. "Thirteenth year." Frost stared at Alec intently. He grinned and ducked his head.
"Your hair is pretty. Very lovely white color." Alec stood up, hung her coat up and stepped outside. His smile wide. "I haven't seen him smile in a long time. You should hang around. He has such a lovely smile." Jane made a small bowing gesture and excused herself from the house, following her brother.
"You siblings aren't human, am I correct?" The mother looked at her, a calm but cautious look. Frost made an unsure sound, dropped her head, and hid her eyes once more. "I never spoke of your kind to my children. Jane has friended a man, he's like you. Cold, pale, beautiful. A cold one, but Jane is so amazed and kind to him, and him alike. You are different. You have heartbeats. Hopefully you can protect them when I pass." The mother coughed and red specks splattered on her hand.
"Plague? Illness common, in home land." Frost stood up and felt the mothers hand, heat bubbling against her chilly skin. "Great sick." Frost looked at the mother with sadness. The mother nodded and put the infant to sleep in a small cot next to the fire. "You need rest dear. Follow me."
"Frost. You need to flee. They believe we are witches. You and your brother will fall with us if you are caught!" Alec's voice rang clear in her dazed head. He had wrapped Terran, the name he had given her brother, and put him in a cloth, and drapped it around her shoulder. "Go. GO!" He shoved her out and Jane hugged her and kiss Terran in the head. Alec's eyes stared with sadness back at her, and she nodded, fleeing into the darkness of the forest.
The screaming of the village and Jane's shrill wail told her something was happening. She stopped, fought the urge to turn back, and slowly lost. She got back to the village in time to see Jane screaming from the fire at her feet. Frost whimpered and wanted to save her friends so dearly. She held back, coddling the infant to her chest. She watched as the flames licked Alec's legs and flinched as his scream broke through his silence. She closed her eyes and waited for silence.
The screaming of the villagers made her open them again. She watched as a cold one ripped the twins from the stake, and two more tore into the village. She wanted to jump in, save her friends, but recognized Aro and slowly stepped further into the shadows, her gaze intent on Alec's unconscious face. "Search the village, leave no one alive." Aro looked at the twins and slowly rubbed his eyes. "Humans are such horrid beings. To harm children for their gifts, despicable, horrid creatures." Aro bent down and grabbed Jane's wrist, raised it to his mouth, and bit her. Frost felt anger and pain raise in her chest, and had to look away when Aro did the same to Alec.
"There's something watching us. Aro look." A guard pointed at Frost's eyes, and she turned and ran as fast as her small legs would carry her. Aro stood up to follow but Alec's agonizing cries started back up, the venom working through his body. Frost felt tears fall and continued running until she reached the ocean, she boarded a boat, asked where it was headed, and sat with her brother in a room.
Her new home, her friends, her new found hope, gone within a night. A night that she swore she'd remember for the rest of her life.
