The Beach

Written 04/15/2014

(Hi updating this again with the Prologue of a story I'll probably never write and that I literally just found😭)

"Mommy were are we going?" Four year old Kellin Quinn asked her mom for what seemed like the hundred time in twenty minutes.

She sighed with a smile and replied, "to the beach baby, I already told you." Then caressed her son's hair softly.

"And how is the beach mommy?" The little boy tilted his head to a side curiously. He really asked a lot of questions for a four year old.

"Well, it is really big." Kellin's mom wrapped her arms around him. "The sky is always blue, the water is crystal clear and the sand on your toes feels soft and warm, also the sun kisses all over your skin and all you want to do is go in the water-"

"Is the water cold?" He interrupted, and she chuckled, then nodded, "sometimes it is, but it's the good cold honey."

Kellin smiled widely, feeling content with his mom's anwers. "How long till we get there mommy?" He asked eagerly. "I want to see the beach!"

"Soon baby, soon."

California.

That's where they were headed.

It had been Mrs. Bostwick biggest dream to someday visit the state and stay there for a while with her family, so when she finally found the chance of buying a cheap, new house on the sunny state, she had no doubts on buying it right away.

It was going to be their summer getaway, or something like that. They planned on going there every summer to enjoy the sunny weather and forget about their busy lives in Michigan for a little while.

It was the perfect plan.

When they finally arrived, Kellin thought the house was weird, but the good kind of weird. He also felt like he was being part of one of those movies you only see on television. Everything was new to him and he was more than excited to be there.

Even though the house wasn't big, it wasn't small either. It was perfect sized for the little family, and it did looked like one of those houses from the movies. You know, those with the beach right across the street, big windows, hammocks and palm trees and all.

It was perfect for them.

Their first week at their new house was spent "making it look pretty" as Mrs. Bostwick would answer her son whenever he asked them what they were doing. They cleaned, fixed, painted and redecorated the whole place. And at the end of the week the house looked brand new. They really knew how to add that little something that made the place feel just like home. And Mrs. Bostwick was extremely proud of hers and her husband's work.

But Kellin's favorite memory from that week was a night he couldn't sleep. It was late, probably ten or eleven and his parents were still painting the living room walls, he knew because he could hear noises coming from the room, noises he instantly recognized as laughter.

He smiled as he walked down the hallway carefully, his stuffed giraffe tugged tightly in his arms. He poked his head from the wall and saw his parents having a paint war, they were running around the room laughing and trying to paint each others already stained clothes.

Kellin couldn't help but giggle at the sight but when he saw his mom dip both her hands on the blue paint can and then make grabby hands at his dad wearing the biggest devilish smile on her face, he couldn't help but gasp and cover his mouth with his hands. Mr. Bostwick tried walking backwards attempting to run away from his wife but it was useless, she grabbed his face and rubbed the paint all over his forehead, cheeks and neck, she laughed as hard as she could but then Mr. Bowstick, who was also laughing, leaned in and captured her lips in a sweet kiss. She put her arms around her husband's neck and smiled in between the kisses.

They soon broke apart though, and turned their heads to the hallway when they heard a loud giggle coming from it. Kellin gasped and hid behind the wall hoping his parents hadn't seen him but it wasn't long before he felt hands at his sides, lifting him off the ground and into his dad's arms, he screamed and laughed when he began rubbing paint on his little face and his mom began tickling his stomach.

"Stop, stop!!" He yelled and laughed at the same time, "please stop!!!" He kept laughing and tried cleaning his face rubbing the blue and yellow liquid from his face and trying to put it on his parent's faces instead and minutes later they were all covered in paint from head to toes, laughing messes on the floor.

Mrs. Bostwick kissed the top of Kellin's head once their laughter died down and smiled. "You like the house baby?" She asked, tugging a piece of his hair behind his ear. He looked up at her and nodded eagerly.

And it was true, little Kellin couldn't wait to spend the rest of the summer there.

~

It had been three long years since the family bought the house in California, and going there every summer was more like their family tradition now. They loved it there, specially Kellin. Every year he became more and more excited to go back to the warm state. He just loved to spend his days under the sun playing on the sand and now that he had just turned 7, he was finally able to go into the water a little further from where he was allowed to. With his dad's supervision of course, because Kellin was a very curious kid, and his parents were always worried something might happen to him. Mrs. Bostwick would always freak out whenever her son got too far away on the crystal water, but she knew nothing would happen to him as long as her husband was there to watch him. It made Kellin feel a little overprotected but he knew they did it because they cared, and they loved him more than anything, they were his parents after all.

It was one particular evening that Kellin was trying to build "the biggest sand castle in the world", while his parents were in the water, that something hit his head really, really hard. The impact was that hard that he fell onto his back on the sand and then moaned in pain when he realized what had happened.

"Oh my God I'm so sorry are you okay?!" Kellin heard a boy's voice say from above him, he opened up his eyes a little and was met with a boy that looked kind of his age, maybe a little older, looking at him with a worried expression on his face. He rubbed his eyes and sat back up. "Y-yeah I guess so." He managed to say trying his best not to cry, he wasn't very keen on dealing with pain. "W-Why did you hit me?" He asked confused.

"No! It wasn't on purpose I promise!" The boy, who Kellin noticed had tanned skin and short brown hair, said defensively. "It was my friend's fault, see?" He pointed at another boy that looked like them, only he had weird spiky dark hair. "Don't tell him but he's got like, two left arms on him." He chuckled. And Kellin laughed a little too. But wait, what was that supposed to mean?

"What hit me?" The boy got up and picked up a volleyball ball from the sand. "I'm sorry, that must've hurt." He said looking at the ball. And yeah it did hurt, a lot. But Kellin thought the boy seemed nice and he believed him when he said it wasn't on purpose, so he told him it was okay and that he was fine. The tanned boy smiled and started to leave but suddenly he stopped and turned around, asking Kellin if he wanted to play with them. Kellin's eyes lit up at the question, he didn't really have any friends at home, and denying the offer would've been dumb from his part, so he nodded eagerly and stood up, completely forgetting about his parent's advice of not 'talking to strangers', but the boy wasn't a stranger, he was- oh, right.

"What's your name?" He asked once they reached the spiky haired boy, and two other boys he had no idea were there in the first place.

"He's Victor, I'm Jaime." The dark haired boy, Jaime apparently, answered. "Oh and he's Tony and he's Mickey, Victor's baby brother." He pointed at the two other boys by his side.

"Hey don't call me baby I'm not a baby!" The boy, now known as Mickey shoved Jaime's shoulder playfully.

"Yeah and don't call me Victor either, that makes me feel like an old fat man." Victor said.

Jaime just rolled his eyes and picked up the ball from Victor's hands. "You had to be brothers" he mumbled to himself and Kellin couldn't help but chuckle and think that these boys were very funny. Then again he didn't know much boys his age, so he didn't have much to compare them with.

"Please ignore him." Victor told him. "You can call me Vic, nice to meet you...?"

"Kellin." He smiled, "my name's Kellin."

~

Kellin and Vic became best friends within a week of knowing each other. They decided it on a Wednesday afternoon while eating ice cream on the back of Vic's house.

They promised to be there for each other no matter what and that no one would ever break their friendship apart, not even distance. They were going to be best friends, forever. And they sealed the promise with a bite of the other one's ice cream, which a was a big effort considering they both hated the other one's favorite ice cream flavour.

For the rest of the summer they did everything together and spent every passing second hanging outside on the beach or at each other's houses.

It was awesome and Kellin couldn't believe he had finally found someone to call his best friend, and he felt like the happiest boy in the entire world.

~

They'd been friends for four years now and their bond was only growing stronger. And even though they only got to see each other for a few months during the year, they made the best out of their time together and spent it all playing for hours under the sun, swimming or playing video games at home, some nights both families went out to get dinner and then the boys would spend the night on unplanned sleepovers at either one of their houses. They only lived three blocks away from each other and their parents got along very well also, so that made things ten times better for them. It was the most fun any of them had had in their short period of life.

Too bad summer couldn't last forever.

Kellin would always go back to his home state Michigan and Vic would always stay there in California. It was sad for the boys but every time they had to say goodbye at the airport, Kellin always promised to come back.

Sometimes Kellin was jealous of his best friend, he could go to the beach whenever he wanted, any time of the day, any time of the night. He had lived there his whole 12 years of life, and sometimes Kellin wished he was born there too, instead of plain, boring Michigan. He wondered how would it be like to celebrate Christmas there. Or the New Years. Or his birthday. How would it be like to spend it with Vic?

He always told his mom about this everyday, it was probably annoying for her, Kellin did talk about it a lot. But she always remained calm and apologized to him, telling him that it was impossible due to hers and his dad's working schedule, and Kellin would always get sad every time he received that answer.

He just wanted to go back, he missed Vic and he missed his others friends too, he really didn't have anyone to hang out with there at home, he didn't have any friends at school and his parents were always busy, so it was him and him alone in his room all afternoon. And it was boring. But he tried to see the bright side of things and think that summer was right around the corner and that he would see his friends sooner than he thought. Too bad it was only the start of November.

Kellin missed Vic the most at night. His bedroom in Michigan was always cold and it felt empty without the company of the older boy. He always wondered if Vic thought about him as much as he thought about him at night.

It was confusing and scary for him. He knew Vic was his best friend in the world, but he couldn't help the weird feelings on his stomach he started to feel at the end of last summer whenever he was near him, or the increase of his heart beat whenever they held hands.

What was happening to him? Were these feelings he felt towards his best friend normal? He didn't know what was going on inside his head, anymore. He was only 12 years old and he was already a hundred percent sure that he didn't find girls attractive. He was okay with it, but deep down he felt like there was something wrong, and he didn't know what to do.

He was just very, very confused.

So he did the only thing he felt he could do: he talked to his mom.

Kellin and Mrs. Bostwick were at the dining table one night, she was helping him with some Math homework when Kellin took a deep breath and decided to shoot the question that had been bugging him for months, "mom is it wrong that I don't like girls?"

Mrs. Bostwick, who was taking a sip of her cup of tea, almost choked to death when she heard her son asking such question. "What do you mean honey?" She cleared her throat and cleaned her mouth with a napkin.

Kellin sighed already thinking that it was a bad idea wanting to talk about it, but he already asked so he looked down and started toying with his fingers. "I-I mean, one day at lunchtime these boys from my class were looking at s-some girls from other classes and saying things like t-they were 'hot' and 'sexy' and stuff like that.. But when I looked at them I didn't feel anything, mom. Wasn't I supposed to feel attracted to them too?" He finally looked up at her and she was giving him this understanding look that made him think things were going to be fine.

"Baby there's something you need to understand," she patted her lap for him sit down on it and he did, she sighed and started brushing her son's hair, "love is an amazing, wonderful thing, you know that?" Kellin nodded, but he wasn't so sure about what it meant "and it grows between two people that care about each other very much. You've been told that it's supposed to happen between a boy and a girl, like your dad and I. But, sometimes it happens that this love and caring about each other grows within two people from the same gender as well."

"You mean like boys and boys and girls and girls?" Kellin asked, interrupting his mom. She nodded and continued talking. "Yes baby, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. There's nothing wrong with falling in love. And you are allowed to fall in love with whoever you want. Your dad and I will always support you and be there for you no matter what, because we love you so much, okay Kellin?"

Kellin nodded and wrapped his arms around his mother's frame and hugged her as tight as he could. He wasn't confused anymore, and there was nothing wrong with him either. He was okay. "Thank you mom, I love you."

She kissed the top of his head and smiled. "You're welcome baby, I love you too."

~

The summer had just started and Kellin couldn't be happier.

He couldn't wait to go back to California. He was going to finally see Vic and his other friends again and he really couldn't wait.

The last day of school was always the best day of the year for him and when he got home that day he wasted no time in running upstairs, taking his suitcases out of his closet and dumping them on his bed. He quickly started putting clothes inside and all the stuff he was going to need for the three months they were going to be there. And by the time he had finished, he could hear the front door open and close, he smiled widely at the thought of his parents already home.

He quickly walked down the stairs and found them in the kitchen. Her mother looked tired and was drinking a glass of water. Mr. Bostwick noticed his son's presence first, "hey buddy, want something to eat?" He asked while preparing what looked like a sandwich. Kellin just shook his head. "No thanks, but I already packed my bags!" He said happily and kind of proud of having made it himself, because his mom always helped him do it.

"What bags baby?" His mom asked confused. Kellin looked at her like she was joking or something, please don't tell him she forgot.

"It's summer mom! We're going to the beach?" He said cheerfully, but a little afraid of what her reaction would be.

"Oh Kellin," she said sadly putting the now empty glass of water in the counter "I'm so sorry baby we can't go to the beach this year."

Kellin felt his heart drop at what he just heard. What did she mean they couldn't go? It was their tradition to go there every summer! She couldn't do this to him!

"What?! Why?!" He yelled, tears already prickling at his eyes.

"Son calm down, your mom and I have to work on something very big for the company and we can't give ourselves vacations just yet," his dad tried reasoning with the boy but he wouldn't listen.

He was upset, he was sad and he was frustrated. He wanted to see Vic, he wanted to play in the sand. He wanted to have fun.

"No! I want to go to the beach! This isn't fair! I hate you!" He stormed out the room leaving Mr. and Mrs. Bostwick with a little pain in their hearts. But the boy had to understand they really needed the job, and they would go back whenever they got the opportunity.

It was for the best, but that night Kellin cried himself to sleep for the very first time in his life.

~

A lot can happen in three years and a lot can change in three years.

The Bostwick family never went back to California and Kellin got over it with time. Ha was very upset at the beginning, he wouldn't talk to his parents at all, but then he got sent to various summer camps for teens instead and he had to admit he really kind of enjoyed them. It got his mind off things, and people.

He hand't forgotten about Vic, but he didn't think about him anymore.

And something changed in him also.

Somehow, Kellin stopped being that awkward, weird boy that was always alone in class and was too afraid to talk to people and turned himself into this new, confident, kind of popular guy at school.

He was 15 now, cursing sophomore year, he had friends, he was doing well in all his classes, he had a whole new personality and there was a boy on his French class that was driving him insane.

Kellin accepted his sexuality at a very young age, he wasn't ashamed of it one bit and wasn't afraid of letting people know either. Also, his parents accepted him the way he was, just like they promised, and his friends didn't mind at all, and the school he attended was very open-minded about stuff like that, and he guessed he was just lucky. He knew about the bullying and how bad it could get to some people, and he was very, very thankful for not having to deal with it.

Kellin and his group of friends were currently sitting at their usual lunch table at the cafeteria. And it so happened that the guy from his French class was sitting at the table right across from theirs. Kellin couldn't help but to steal glances at him every five seconds while eating his chili fries and he felt worse than a little girl with a crush.

But who wouldn't have a crush on him really. According to Kellin, he was the definition of perfect. He was tall, he was funny, his hair was blond and messy with little brown streaks at the ends, his eyes were green, he had a nice body, and he even heard somewhere that he had some tattoos or something, plus he had great taste in music and he played the bass in some garage band after school.

Who wouldn't have a crush on him. Kellin was so head over heels for this guy, he was starting to hate it

"Dude you're staring again." One of friends, Jack. snapped him out of his thoughts and he rolled his eyes.

"No I wasn't." He said defensively and ate a fry. He knew what he was doing though, but he couldn't help it. He was definitely staring and he didn't even care anymore.

"Why don't you just go there and have your way with him or something." Another one of his friends, a ginger wearing thick glasses named Matty, laughed.

"He's not even gay!" He decided to whisper-yell at them, anything to make them drop the subject.

"How do you know that, heard he doesn't have a girlfriend." Another friend, Justin said wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.

Kellin just shook his head and snorted. "Dude if not having a girlfriend makes you gay then all of you would be flaming homosexuals."

And it was their turn to roll their eyes and laugh. Whatever, Kellin thought smiling, he won this one.

Minutes later he felt a light tap on his shoulder, he was just biting down on his grilled cheese sandwich so when he mumbled a "what" his mouth was full of food. When he didn't get an answer, he looked up curiously and almost had a heart attack when he saw no other than the guy who had been plaguing his thoughts all semester smiling down at him.

Kellin's eyes narrowed and he chewed his food as fast as he could, then he tried to clean his mouth with a napkin and cleared his throat.

"Hey." He tried acting casually, despite the light pink shade that was covering his cheeks.

"Hi." The boy smirked and Kellin's heartbeats began to increase. "Can I talk to you for a second?" He asked hopeful. Kellin wanted to jump up and down from excitement. He couldn't believe it was actually happening. He looked back at his friends and they were all looking at him with these knowing smiles. He looked back at the boy and nodded, he stood up from his seat and followed him out of the cafeteria.

The boy's name was Andrew. He was a junior, one year older than Kellin. That day he asked him for a date. And after that date it was Kellin who asked him for a second date. And after weeks of just hanging out together almost everyday, Andrew asked him to be his boyfriend, officially. Of course Kellin said yes, and the following year was one of the best years of Kellin's life.

Andrew was his first everything and he really taught him how to live. He was sweet and caring and honestly, Kellin thought he loved him. But as some would say, all good things must come to an end. Andrew graduated high school and was accepted into a very prestigious college, in England. Neither of them believed in long-distance relationships, so they decided to call it off. It was nice while it lasted, but it was time to let go.

And now that he wasn't attached to anyone, he could enjoy his senior the best way he could.

~

Senior year wasn't as fun as Kellin expected it to be. Yes, there were parties here and there and yes, he dated some guys, but apart from that, it was tiring, tiring and yeah, tiring. It was nothing like the movies and when the day finally arrived, he couldn't be happier.

But it was the moment when Kellin saw all his classmates wearing their graduation robes and capes, that it hit him. He was graduating, he was taking that next big step. He was going to face the real world and become an adult.

He couldn't believe it really, the day he never thought would come, had finally arrived.

They all gathered in the auditorium and the ceremony was like any other graduation ceremony, boring. Kellin received his diploma and turns out he graduated with honors.

His mom cried a little, okay she cried a lot, and his dad gave him this 'I'm so proud of you son' hug. Kellin was very happy, but a little scared also. He didn't know exactly what to pursue after school was over. He had thought of giving himself a sabbatic year, to make a road trip around the country or something. But this other part of himself thought it was a bad idea and that he should just go to college. Truth is, he didn't know what he was good at. He was a straight A student yes, but he hadn't found his calling just yet.

And that scared him.

"I can't believe you just graduated!" His thoughts were interrupted by her mother's crying voice, the ceremony was over and they were currently outside of the school building.

Mrs. Bostwick hugged her son as tight as she could and Kellin felt a warm feeling in his heart. "Where did my little boy go? Where's my baby?" She caressed her son's face and Kellin could feel his eyes start to water, God he hated crying. "Mom I'm only 17, it's not like I'm 30 or anything." He laughed and dried his eyes.

"I know, I know." She nodded and sighed. "It's just, it feels like yesterday that you were my little boy, running around on the beach, yelling and laughing, all so happy."

Kellin smiled at the thought of the beach, he still had a few memories from the place he used to adore when he was younger. They never came back though, they never got the chance. Maybe now that's he's grown he could go back there for a little while? He felt a little nostalgia feeling thinking about it, really.

Something felt missing from it, perhaps someone? But who?

The question left his mind as fast as it came when he heard his name being called from behind his back. He turned and saw his friends Matty and Justin walking towards him. They were still wearing their robes and that made it all seem more real. He just graduated.

What now?

He would never go back there. He would never see their friends on a daily basis again. He would never cause trouble on the cafeteria or in class ever again. Other people would start using his locker and other people would sit on his desk. He would be forgotten.

It was over, school was really over.

"I'm gonna miss you guys so much." He started crying as soon as he had his two friends in front of him. He hugged them as tight as he could and so did them.

"We're gonna miss you too buddy." Matty pulled away and smiled. "Promise to keep in touch okay." Kellin smiled too and nodded eagerly. "Yes, of course." He whipped the tears from his eyes. "And you promise to marry Brittany." Matty laughed at his friend's remark but nodded anyway. He indeed loved his girlfriend Brittany very much.

"Stay out of trouble okay?" Kellin told Justin and fist bumped him. "Can't promise anything man." He replied laughing.

Kellin gave his best friends one last smile before he turned around and entered his parent's car. When did it even got there, he had no idea.

They waved goodbye at him while they drove out of the school's parking lot and Kellin waved back from the backseat. He couldn't have asked for better friends than them.

But now, he guessed it was time to grow up.

~

Four months later Kellin received a phone call that changed his life forever. He was watching a movie, killing some time before going to bed when the phone suddenly rang, and when he answered he felt like the air was taken away from his lungs.

His parents were in the hospital and there had been a terrible accident.

When Kellin arrived to the hospital his legs were shaking, his heart was about to come out of his chest and tears were already threatening to fall down his face. He walked towards the lady sitting behind the desk and asked where he could find his parents, but when she gave him that sad puppy look, he knew things weren't going to be okay this time.

He just knew.

They made him sit on the waiting room and minutes later, a doctor sat by his side. He placed a clipboard on his lap and when he cleared his throat, Kellin lost it. He slowly explained what had happened, and Kellin couldn't stop crying.

Mr. and Mrs. Bostwick had been in a severe car crash, a presumably drunk trunk driver hit the front of the car. His parents had died instantly.

Kellin wanted to scream, he wanted to fall to the ground on his knees and scream why was this happening to him. Why his parents? Out of everybody, why him? He wondered if they felt any pain, he really hopes not. What was their last thought? What was the last thing they saw? Were they thinking about him? Probably, but he didn't know. And he'd never know because his parents were gone. Just like that, poof, gone. He'd never see them again and he'd never talk to them again.

The pain he was feeling was unexplainable. He really felt like his head was going to explode from all the crying. And he didn't know what to do. What was he supposed to do? He had no one. There was no one there to comfort him and he'd never felt more alone in his life.

He had just lost the most important people on his entire world and there was nothing he could do about it.

~

The funeral was the hardest thing he had to go through in his entire life. A lot of people showed up, but he barely knew any of them. They all gave him their condolences, but were they really sorry? They still had their families, they were okay. Kellin wasn't. Some of his friends also showed up, and their company made the whole thing just a little bit better. His speech was short, he could barely speak really, and when he finished he couldn't stop crying.

After the burial was done, he felt empty. He really wasn't going to see his parents ever again. And he had no idea what to do next. He couldn't go back home, he felt haunted there and he felt more alone than ever, some of his friends offered him a place to stay, until things got better, but he didn't want to be a burden and honestly, it didn't feel like the right thing to do. So he decided he would stay at his aunt's place for a while. She was her mother's sister and even though they never saw each other at all, the woman still kind of cared for her nephew very much. And Kellin thought she wasn't that bad either.

Kellin was currently in his room, the one on his aunt's house, and bags were sprawled out everywhere on the floor and on his bed. He was packing. He had finally decided it was time for him to go college. He still missed his parents and sometimes he still felt a little lonely and he was tired of it.

College was the perfect opportunity to start over. He was determined to make himself, and the rest of his family, proud and achieve something great in his life.

He'd be majoring in Creative Writing.

He used to write a lot when he was in high school, he never told anyone but one day, one of his friends read one of his stories he had on his notebook and told him he was very, very talented. He didn't believe it of course, but when he showed his aunt the notebook, she told him the exact same thing and encouraged him to become an writer.

He was a little hesitant at first, but after giving it a little thought, he decided it. He was going to college and he was going to become a writer.

~

A week after Kellin turned 21 years old, a lawyer, his parent's lawyer, called him on the phone. He wanted to meet Kellin at her office that afternoon to talk about some very important stuff about his parents.

Kellin was confused but went anyway. He just hoped it wasn't bad news. When he arrived to the building he got into the elevator and reached floor 5, where the woman said her office was. He was becoming more and more nervous about being there with every minute passing, he was going to talk to someone about his parents, and he hadn't talked to anyone about his parents in a long time.

He knocked once on the wooden door and instantly a girl, probably in her mid-twenties, greeted him and asked him to come in. She was the receptionist and she told him to wait until the previous client got out of the office. Kellin just nodded and took out his phone to play with some app just to pass the time.

Minutes later, a door opened and a woman with brown-reddish hair tied up in a bun wearing a expensive looking suit came out of the room, and another person, a man wearing a suit just like hers, right behind her.

He felt underdressed immediately, he was just wearing a plain light red shirt and some jeans he found that morning on his room at the college dorm. The woman said goodbye to the man and then looked at Kellin.

"You must be Kellin Quinn Bostwick" She smiled, her voice was high but at the same time elegant and it made Kellin want to shrink in his sit because he felt so out of place. He just nodded and the woman told him to come inside with him.

She took a sit on her big, leather chair and he did the same on the one across from her. Her office was big, she had a lot of frames on the walls as well as her master degrees and stuff like that. Her desk was full with folders and papers, but there was something that caught his eye. One of those folders read "Bostwick" right in the middle, with big letters. The woman noticed and looked at Kellin.

"I know this is hard for you" she said and Kellin looked up. "And I hate to be the one talking to you about this, but these are good news." She smiled, again.

This woman seemed to smile a lot, not that Kellin was complaining but he just looked at her. It had been three years since the accident but it still hurt Kellin to think about it and to think of his parents.

"I'm Lawyer Johnson, but you can call me Barbara." She extended her hand to shake Kellin's. He did but it seemed robotic, "I'm Kellin." She tore her hand apart and opened the folder, "well let's get started then."

She told him his parents were very well known people on society and had lots of properties here and there.  They were very wealthy but they never really showed. Not even Kellin knew they had all these stuff. He guessed all those late shifts at the office really paid off at the end.

They also only wanted the best for their only child, so in case of anything happening to them, everything belonged to Kellin once he became a legal adult.

He should be happy, Lawyer Johnson said he was rich. He didn't have to worry about finding a job, or buying a house or anything.

He had enough money to last him two lifetimes.

But honestly, he didn't care. He didn't care because all that money wasn't going to bring them back. If he ever won the lottery the first people he would've told were his parents. And they were dead. So no, he wasn't happy. One just can't get over their parent's death just like that. It takes time, and to Kellin it felt like it was going to take a lot of time.

He told the lawyer he wanted to sell everything and donate a quarter of the money to charity. He would keep the rest just in case he wanted to do something with his sad life. She was surprised at the boy's decision but accepted anyway, not that she could've denied his request or anything.

She started showing Kellin photos of all the things he would now be selling and honestly, he was impressed. He didn't even know they owned that much stuff. When did his parents even buy all of that?

A photo caught his attention though. It was one of the beach house his parent's had bought when he was only four years old. That seemed so long ago. He remembered his mom talking about the beach on his high school graduation day, and he remembered thinking of going back there again someday. What if? He picked up the photograph from the table and stared at it for a moment.

It'd been so many years since he went there, but he still had some happy memories from the place and that made him smile, and he hadn't genuinely smiled in a while.

So that's when he decided he was moving to California once he finished college.

Now.

When Kellin first got the house, he couldn't believe he was actually there. It'd been more than 6 years since he'd been in California and honestly, it made him sad to know the only reason he came back was because his parents were dead.

Would he still be there if the accident never happened? Probably not.

The weather was nice that morning. It was still January, and without the snow, the sun was hidden by clouds and it was very windy, Kellin thought it felt nice. He rolled down the window and stared at the house for a moment. Nothing had changed really, the house still looked the same. Some of the paint outside was  running a little and the front fence was a little rusty, but it was the same house he remembered from he was younger.

"Is this the house sir?" The taxi driver asked him, snapping him out of his thoughts.

He nodded and got out of the car, the man followed his actions and took out Kellin's luggage from the trunk. Kellin paid the man and thanked him. When the car was out of sight he turned to his side and saw the ocean for the first time in what felt like forever. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Since it was early the bay was empty and the place looked very peaceful. It made him think of all the nights he spent longing to go back when he was little. And now he was there again.
