Guilty

Persephone sat up in bed, opening her eyes. She was no longer in that strange realm of cypress and foggy skies. Before her was her own bedroom, exceedingly ordinary.

Had it been real? It seemed real.

"Hades." She whispered to herself.

There was no way she could have fabricated the dream. It must have been real. She looked towards her window. Creeping rays of sunlight were making their way through the curtains. It was early, but she felt well rested enough to start the day. Swinging her legs over her bed she realized that she was still wearing the white and gold robes her mother had given her.

As she changed out of her clothes and laid the pieces on her bed, she couldn't stop thinking of Hades. The way he looked at her made her feel a way she had never felt before. He had promised they would see each other again.

Her mind began racing. Had he liked her the way she liked him?

She stared at herself in the mirror by the faint early morning light. Her long hair tumbled over her shoulders in gentle waves. She supposed she had an attractive figure. She slipped on her favorite dress. It was light blue, and hugged her body a little more suggestively than her other dresses. She thought for a moment about pinning her hair up. But eventually she bounced her way downstairs with her hair in full flow behind her.

To her surprise, when she entered the kitchen she found her mother already sitting at the table eating breakfast.

"Sweetheart, you're up." Demeter said. Her eyes looked puffy as if she hadn't slept well. "Come sit down and I'll make you some breakfast."

Persephone sat across from her mother as she waved her hand at the vines on the wall. They sprung to life and began preparing oatmeal, carefully measuring the oats and water and pouring it into a pan.

"I wanted to say sorry about yesterday sweetheart." Demeter said, resting her hand on Persephone's.

Persephone once again felt a wave of guilt rush over her. "I wanted to apologise too." She said looking down at the varnished table. "You told me not to go anywhere after the meeting and I let Pallas lead me off anyway. I just got so caught up with all the people I met that I didn't even think twice."

"I'm sorry too. I know it must have been embarrassing for you, the way I reacted." Demeter said. She raised a hand to Persephone's chin and pushed her face up so their eyes would meet. "But you need to understand that Olympians can't be trusted."
