chapter twenty-four

The anger from the discovery still lingered and led her to promptly leaving Obi-Wan to get dressed. She knew that she needed to talk to her father about this even if they couldn't do anything about it quite yet. She had to go to him and talk to him about this. About how she had been put in danger. Hopefully it would make him feel better about the fact that she was in love with a Jedi who would never truly love her back. Maybe it would make him see how much of a mistake the engagement was and maybe there could be a shred of forgiveness.

So she knocked on the door of her father's study. She had heard him shuffling about in there and his gruff voice made her walk in. She took a seat across from him, a huff escaping her lips as she just tried to calm herself down. Obi-Wan's presence had made her feel a little better but it wasn't enough. She needed something to properly help her calm down. Ranting would help and she didn't want to rant to Obi-Wan. He would be rational. She didn't want that. She wanted someone who felt just as angry as she did and she could find that in her father.

"I found out who's trying to kill me," Phoenix said as she passed her datapad over to him. Brendaen's eyebrow raised as he took the datapad from her. He read over the information on the screen and didn't quite understand it, "That's my previously joint bank account with Jax," She said as she took the datapad off him. He was going back to working but his hand stopped mid-air before he looked up at her. His eyebrow raised at her words and he placed his hands down on his desk, sitting up. He was intrigued now. Jax had been trying to kill the woman he had agreed to marry? Brendaen didn't quite understand yet so Phoenix was more than happy to explain.

"Do you remember Jax's sister?" Phoenix asked and her father nodded. That's how her father originally got to know the Lara family. Through Jax's little sister who was running against Phoenix. It was meant to be friendly competition but Phoenix quickly realised it was only friendly while Phoenix was losing but she had won by a landslide surprise election. It was almost unheard of and when Jax's little sister found out, it seemed she was furious and Jax came to her not a week later.

"She wanted the Senate seat..." Brendaen said quickly putting two and two together before Phoenix even got a chance to open her mouth. She nodded though and he scowled. He then flicked through a couple things on his datapad and she could see that he was going to write a message but she quickly sat up properly. Her hand slamming down over his datapad to prevent him from sending or doing anything.

"We can't let them know we know," Phoenix said quickly and Brendaen looked at her. He seemed unimpressed, his hands resting on the desk next to the datapad but not typing anything quite yet, "Obi-Wan said that we shouldn't tell them. We need to make a case against them first before we confront them. They'll just deny it and get prepared for a legal battle," Phoenix said. It felt weird telling her father what he should do but it was necessary. She didn't want to compromise her chances even if she wanted nothing more than to tell them now. There was still a rational part to her anger-addled brain.

"Alright, but as soon as we can do something. I'm gonna punch that snivelling bastards face in," Brendaen said before he allowed Phoenix to go. Phoenix sighed and nodded, running her fingers through her hair as she left the room. It felt so strange that her father had been the more aggressive one. She had expected it but at the same time thought he would be less bothered. He didn't seem very bothered about a lot of things. Maybe it was because it was do with Phoenix. As she walked into his study, she had expected to rant but it was like they got their emotions across without words and her father's anger made her feel more content. There was still fury in her heart and a desire to scream at someone but she didn't. She just tried to stay calm, it would do them no help to go out of control.

"Let's go downstairs and make breakfast," Obi-Wan said as he wrapped an arm around her waist. She jumped at his presence but nodded. Food did sound like a good idea. Obi-Wan was also dressed now in his robes and Phoenix allowed him to guide her downstairs. A soft sigh escaping her lips as she let her mind wonder. But it wondered freely now. Thinking of all the possibilities of what could have happened and she received no complaints from Obi-Wan when she came back to reality.

He didn't complain about her daydreaming. He didn't comment. He just smiled at her and continued to cook. He was making them breakfast today it seemed and she just watched him. Her mind wondering again but rather than to the negatives of what had happened. It wondered to the positives. She had found Obi-Wan again thanks to Jax and his return. Because he tried to kill her, she fell back in love. She found someone she was actually in love with and cared about.

And even though she won't be able to love Obi-Wan freely. She at least has someone who loves her as much as she loves them. Obi-Wan was the perfect man for her. He was reserved but not too reserved. Kind, sweet. Always wanted the best for her. He made her smile wider than she ever thought she could and he was letting himself love her. It could only be a brief fleeting moment of love that disappears by the time he returns to Coruscant but she would rather that than nothing at all.

"I can hear your thoughts, little one," He commented as he moved to cut up the vegetables the normal way. She looked at him, tilting her head. Not understanding quite what he meant. She knew that his Jedi abilities allowed him to hear things but she thought he had to be actively looking into someone's head, "Your thoughts are just very loud this morning," He responded to her questions that she had yet to voice. She nodded and tried to see if she could quieten them but it wasn't something she was even conscience of.

"I don't understand why I tried so hard to be in love with Jax. He was nothing but cruel to me," Phoenix said as she looked up at Obi-Wan. The Jedi glanced back at her, a small frown on his lips. He hadn't spent enough time with them together to even understand the full of extent of how he acted but Jax never felt like a good fit for Phoenix. He never would have said anything and still wouldn't. She didn't need to know what he was thinking. It was not something he wanted to expose and most of his thoughts tended to be improper. He had no idea how he was going to deal with leaving her again.

"You shouldn't be thinking about him anymore. He doesn't need to be on your mind. I know that I'm not the most conventional person to love but I will try and be here for you. I've always loved you for you, even when you were a teenager," He said as he turned around. He switched the stove off since he was done and left it to settle as he walked over to her.

Phoenix stayed sat on her chair, looking up at him. She knew that he did but it was strange. Everything just felt so strange. He was actually showing his love. He wasn't trying to pull away. He wasn't playing that game with her again and she was more glad than anything in the world but it was just so different from how he'd been acting. She didn't understand why he had changed so much and just as her thoughts finished on that spiral, she realised he would be able to hear. A soft chuckle escaping his lips as he looked into her eyes.

"Do you really want to know?" He asked and Phoenix nodded. It was more curiosity than anything else, "I realised that I can't fight what the Force wants. It sings when we are together even if you can't feel it. I should love you. It can't be against the Order's rules if the Force is this happy with me. Then I got your father's approval so why would I ever hide my love from you again?" He asked as he looked down at her. The admission made her cheeks flush red and heat up. Her head bowing as she chuckled softly. She couldn't believe he had actually said that to her. It was strange, it made her feel giddy and like a teenager all over again, "Now, breakfast is ready. Do you want to sit on the porch?" He asked as he walked over to the stove. He dished out the meal between two plates before he added cutlery and picked them up.

"Sure," Phoenix said as she stood up. She grabbed them two glasses of water before the two exited the kitchen. Sitting down on the porch bench as they watched the sky. Talking quietly and eating their food. The previous findings being lost in their own happiness as they let the content moment fill their thoughts. Nothing could ruin that moment and Phoenix wanted nothing more than to stay in it forever.

When Phoenix woke up the next day, it was like the anger had returned full force and with a vengeance. She had been fine the previous night, rational even. She knew that she couldn't go for him and confront Jax but she woke up with that burning rage. It had been on her mind all night and she just couldn't escape it. Couldn't escape of it. Not even in her dreams could she escape it. It was eating her up inside and it was clawing at her skin.

She got up out of bed and walked towards the 'fresher, she needed a shower or maybe a bath. She just hoped that it would help her feel a bit better. Make her feel less angry. She needed to be calm or she would go after Jax. She would do something that she knew she shouldn't. She was a Senator, she had to be regal. She had to be good. Her reputation would be ruined if she was found to have punched her ex-fiance.

So as she got into the bath, she tried to let the smell of the lavender and the calm of the room seep into her skin. But it wasn't working. Somehow she just felt more and more frustrated. The water was making her feel too hot, suffocated. It was getting stuffy and she needed to get out. She didn't even let herself wash before she stepped out of the bath. Wrapping a towel around her and opening the bathroom window.

"Phoenix?" A voice called and she glanced at the door. The voice was only Obi-Wan but she didn't want him to come in so she quickly kicked the doorstop in front of the door hoping it would stop him from attempting anything. She just wanted to be alone for the moment and calm down.

"What?" She called as she pulled her hair into a ponytail. She rubbed the water off her skin and tried to make her cheeks less red. But somehow only made them worse. She was angry, flushed and felt suffocated. Now was not the time for him to come and be his usual good, caring self.

"Your father wants to speak to you," He called and Phoenix sighed. She made a quick curt response of 'okay' before she then continued to dry herself down. She was not in the mood to deal with her father or Obi-Wan right now. She needed to calm down and that meant either a run or maybe just sitting on the back porch with a book. Surely that would stop her from feeling like she wanted to rip someone's guts out. The anger had never been this bad before. It was consuming her, making her want to scream and kick. It was something that she wasn't even aware she could feel.

"Tell him that we can speak later. I need to do some Senate business," Phoenix called after a moment. Praying that the Jedi was still there. There was a noise of approval before she heard his footsteps recede. That made Phoenix feel better. She had some alone time, time to think. She did need to calm down but first she needed a plan.

Walking over to the toilet, she perched on the closed seat. Looking up at the ceiling, thinking through what she could. There had to be some way that she could get back at them. There had to be some way that she could catch the assassin and get back at that retched family. Everything that crossed her mind seemed impossible. Impossible with Obi-Wan around.

She needed to just shake him off. It was irresponsible and stupid. If she died, Jax would get what he wanted but she would be able to take the assassin. The assassin was an amateur and seemed as good as fighting as she was. It was something she could do, she could take them on and she was ready to do it. For her position and for the principle of it, she wanted to get her assassin. It would prove that Phoenix would not be that easy to kill and maybe, just maybe would mean that Jax would get

Once she had got redressed, she said that she was going to go out to the studio and Obi-Wan was quick to join her. He had a duty to protect her and he was not going to let her go anywhere without him. Especially after what they had found out. He didn't want her doing anything particularly stupid because he knew that she definitely could. He had felt her anger that morning and he was worried about her. More worried than he had ever been.

"Where are we going?" He asked as they got into the hover taxi she had called. Phoenix adjusted in the seats, glancing over at him before her gaze returned to the windows.

"Just the art studio," She said, a soft smile appearing on her face as a way to reassure him. Then she just let herself daydream as the buildings passed quickly. Obi-Wan continued to watch her though, he could feel her mind buzzing with thoughts even if he couldn't hear them. She also seemed to have chose something out of the ordinary for her to wear. She usually wore dresses but now she was wearing some simple pants and a top. The shirt was still a little formal and fancy but nothing compared to what she would usually wear. It made him suspicious but he didn't bother to comment.

The ride to the art studio was silent and Phoenix was the one to get out once they arrived. She handed over the credits and jumped out of the vehicle. It wasn't a struggle for her to walk either and he also realised she wasn't wearing heels. She was wearing lace-up shoes. The colour perfectly matching her shirt as she walked into the apartment block.

"You're wearing normal clothes," Obi-Wan commented as they passed the security guard for the building. Phoenix looked back at Obi-Wan, cocking an eyebrow at his choice of words. The two then got into the elevator and she stood, regal as ever. He stood next to her also making sure that he looked presentable.

"I'm not wearing a dress," She corrected as the elevator began to climb the floors of the building. Obi-Wan nodded, understanding her correction but before he could even make a move to speak, she turned to face him, "Do you think I should always wear a dress?" She asked, her tone almost accusatory. Obi-Wan's mouth fell slightly agape as he looked at her. That was not what he meant in the slightest.

"No! I just... I didn't expect... I didn't.." He spluttered out but couldn't seem to find the right word for what he wanted to say. That made Phoenix smile and she pressed a soft kiss to his bearded cheek. An amused look on her face as she moved to stand, facing the doors again. Obi-Wan just looked at her, gently shaking his head, "It's just unexpected," He said finally and she smiled. The elevator dinged and she stepped out, walking down the corridor. Obi-Wan following behind her like he was supposed to.

"I felt like a change and I know it's unusual. I was only teasing," She said as she opened the door to the apartment. She then moved through the living space and went to the door of her studio. Behind the door held a world that she loved much more than the real one, it always made her feel happy and content. It would also help her on her mission today.

"Would you like me to come in or stay out here?" Obi-Wan asked as he stood at the door of her studio. Phoenix strolled over to the window and didn't say anything for a moment. She then turned to face him and gestured for him to come inside. He seemed surprised but smiled nonetheless.

"You can read, do whatever you like. I just want to paint for a bit," She said as she looked at him. He nodded his head and walked over to the shelf built into the wall. It had always been there and was filled with various books that Obi-Wan liked to read. It was still like that from their teenager years. He did wonder if she ever cleaned the studio but didn't concern himself with those thoughts. Instead, he just took a book and sat on the window seat.

Phoenix then began to paint as she allowed the plan to quietly form in her head. She had him exactly where she wanted him but now she had to work out how she could distract him enough so that she could disappear and go after the assassin. She also had to make sure her thoughts stayed conceal from him so he didn't realise what she was doing and what she was planning.

But for now, Phoenix focused on her painting. While she focused on that, her mind could drift and make it harder for him to hear her thoughts. She could lead him astray and then distract him. Just that way to distract him and keep him distracted was going to be difficult to come up with. This was Obi-Wan Kenobi, the least distracted person she knew and a man that could find her no matter where she was.

After around half an hour of the pair just sitting in silence and getting on with their own tasks, Phoenix finally decided what she wanted to do. She knew that she could distract him by talking and maybe she could have something happen that would make a noise and freak him out enough to check it out. She knew that talking to him first would be a good idea. She might be able to distract him with certain ideas that they hadn't explored quite yet.

"Obi-Wan," She said as she walked over to him. He looked up, placing his book to one side as he cocked an eyebrow up at her. She smiled softly and then moved to straddle his waist. A feat much easier since she was wearing pants rather then her dresses. His eyebrow raised at her and she smirked, pressing a soft kiss to the corner of his lips.

"Yes?" He asked as he looked into her eyes, the smirk spreading wider across her lips as her fingers moved to run through his beard. A soft smile of content spreading across his face as he leant into her touch, "Why are you being this touchy?" He asked curiously as he looked up at her. He found it suspicious but loved it nonetheless. He had missed her touch and being around her. The first time he saw her, he was reminded just how

"Am I not allowed to?" She asked cocking an eyebrow as she leant down to press a soft kiss to both corners of his mouth before she rested her forehead against his. He looked at her and let out a short quick 'no'. He didn't want that, he never wanted her to leave him even though he would never voice that opinion. He was a Jedi. It wrong to even be doing this but nothing had ever felt so right. The Force had never been so clear and had never approved so heavily of something before. It had to be good, this couldn't be bad surely.

"Good because I adore you," She muttered as she pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Her hands running through his hair as she kept him close. Obi-Wan accepted the kiss happily and kissed her back. Soft at first before she pulled on his hair which made him grunt, not at all expecting it. This allowed her to deepen the kiss and she let her tongue explore his mouth. But he was quick to dominate the kiss, pulling her closer. Though the kiss didn't last long after that, she had to pull away. Completely breathless, her cheeks flushed as she moved her face to bury in the crook of his neck. He chuckled and pressed a kiss to her hair. His fingers running through the ends before resting on the small of her back.

"I must warn you, it's a dangerous game doing that," He whispered, a darkness to his tone that she certainly hadn't expected. She looked into his eyes and quickly realised what it meant. Her cheeks flushing even darker despite how she smirked wider. The thoughts of distracting him were long gone now. All she wanted was to be near him in any way she could. There was something so exhilarating about being in his arms and kissing him. Doing things that she really shouldn't do but she didn't care.

"What if I wanted to play that dangerous game?" She asked, a teasing lilt to her tone as she let her hands run down his chest. Her fingertips gently playing with the collar of his robes. He watched her and let out a soft curse under his breath before he took a hold of her waist, making her look at him properly. His fingers slightly digging into her skin.

"Is your father home today?" He asked curiously. Phoenix thought for a moment, trying to remember if he had said anything about any meetings. She shook her head, remembering his comment about a day out golfing with some business partners. He didn't seem happy about it but as far as she knew, he had gone out as planned.

"He's on a business golfing trip," She responded, her head tilting as she let the innocent look pass over her face. He grinned and then pulled her into another kiss. It was passionate and he was trying to convey everything he was feeling in it. His hands moving to her hair, pushing her face closer to his. A soft groan leaving her lips as she kept her arms wrapped around his neck. Only when they were both breathless again did he break away. He then lifted her off before they both got up. He didn't even let her catch her breath before he was pulling her out of the studio and to a hover-taxi that they quickly ordered. The pair were in the taxi and heading back to the house, a smirk on Obi-Wan's face. She'd never seen him so eager and impatient before.
