Chapter 29

"I was thinking if maybe you would like to meet up at the park later today?" Cameron says on the other end of the phone. I gather my things into my locker and close it. I was intending today on actually hanging out with him considering that's what people who are dating are supposed to do.

"Sure see you the in half and hour?"

"Ok bye." He cuts the phone and I walk over to Natalie's car.

"I need to you to drive me to the parks after we finish doing our nails." I inform my best friend. But she was too busy tapping on her phone and just nods. She's been texting since we left the building.

"Who are you texting?" I laugh trying to snatch the phone out of her hand but she turns it just in time.

"No one. And what did you say?" She gives me a sheepish smile. I raise an eyebrow, before snatching the phone successfully out of her hand. "Mel! I turned it off anyways." Natalie crosses her arms giving me a smug smile.

"Guess what?" She gives me a confused look. "I have my fingerprint saved on your phone!" I laugh triumphantly turning my back to her so I can see the messages.

"Give it back!" Natalie tugs the back of my top, but I already set my eyes on the set of messages that Natalie was exchanging between George.

"Oh! I see, same George eh?" I laugh at her annoyed face.

"Yes. Now give it!" She growls, only making me even more amused.

"I miss your lips already heart emoji!" I read aloud. "I so want touch those soft lips of yours again. Lets meet again tomorrow. Two heart em-" Natalie snatches the device out of my grasp, her checks blushing.

"Happy now." She groans, getting into her car, I doing the same.

"Yes very. And I can see he makes you very happy." I tap her flushed cheeks slightly and she hides her face with her hands.

"You are so irritating. What about you and Cameron huh!" I roll my eyes.

"We text. But nothing on you and George's level." I admit, letting a small sigh out getting out my phone.

"So no hearts and making out?" Natalie gasps in disbelief. We usually talk in the morning before school, but nothing special and chat at night. for a while. He was really serious when he said he doesn't want anyone to know since he acts like he didn't know me. But we don't do much, we haven't even bee to each others houses or done cute stuff.

"We text and call. But no just kissing emoji's and all that stuff."

"Ok, sweetie, even my grandparents have more chemistry than that. Why don't you suggest to go to his house and watch movies even though you could be doing more than that." Natalie winks at me. "Also I know he didn't want people to know about y'all but he pisses me off when he acts like he doesn't know you."

"Yeah, we don't talk at all." I open a recent message. "Can imagine that. We haven't kissed for more than ten seconds."

"That's a shame. I expected more from Cameron. Want me to talk to him?" She tuts unapprovingly, speeding through a traffic light.

"Natalie!" I give her a warning look and she gives me a guilty smile. "But I have good news. I'm going to take my first driving lesson next week. Finally!" I squeal reading the message.

"Finally because your fat ass be taking too much space." She mocks me.

After doing both of our nails, as promised Natalie drops me off at the park, wishing me good luck and I wait outside for him. He appears down the street, but my smile suddenly fades as I see Alexis walking along side him. Staying calm and collective I watch them as they make their way towards me. Alexis laughing face turns sour.

"What is she doing here?" I ask, through gritted teeth.

"You didn't tell me you were meeting her!" Alexis looks at me in disbelief. "Wait a minute!"

"Yes Alexis, she's my-" Cameron, moving closer to me.

"Don't say it!" Alexis says, glaring at me.

"Girlfriend." I glare at her back. She winced at the word. "Problem?"

"No not at all." Alexis says through gritted teeth. Cameron clears his throat and I take my gaze away from Alexis.

"Well, is she staying?" I cross my arms, giving Cameron an annoyed look. All I wanted to do was spend some time with my so called "boyfriend." who is always busy. It was frankly becoming annoying and the fact that Alexis is here is pissing me off even more. "I'd rather she go."

"Alexis-" Cameron turns to Alexis. "I thought you was going shopping so why don't you go now?"

"Actually, I wanted to go shopping with you Cam Cam." Alexis bats her butterfly looking, eyelashes at Cameron.

"No I can't-" Cameron starts but I having enough, decide to jump in.

"Go away. Go annoy someone else for today." Before Alexis could say another stupid thing, her phone rings and she rolls her eyes, before sashaying off. "I thought you wanted to come so we can spend time together. because this is not going to work." I grumble.

"No, no, I tried to tell her to go but you know Alexis." Cameron approaches me and takes my hand in his.

"Well try harder next time." I snatch my hand out of his and walk over to a bench. Cameron sighs and follows me. When he sits, he tries to get me to look at him, but I was too pissed.

"Melody please don't be mad." He whispers.

"How can not!" I turn to him all of a sudden making him a little started. "You are always busy, we haven't been on a date, or some cute stuff like couples are supposed to. You hardly acknowledge me in school! Do you even like me!" I shout, causing a few passing people to look at us.

"Of course I like you. Really I do. It's just the next game is in a few days and I really need to focus on that." I scoff, turning to face away from him. Cameron gets up and to sit on the other side of the bench facing me. "Look after the game, why don't we go to the movies or anything you want to go." He suggests sweetly. My anger washes away a little and look at him.

"You better." I groan.

"I promise." He lets out his pinkie and I connect mine with his. "Actually I have a better idea, why don't you come see me at the next game. You can cheer for me."

"Thought you didn't want people to know we were dating?" I ask.

"Why not announce it at the game. I'm sure everyone would be delighted. Perfect timing even." He smiles brightly. I give him a confused look at his sudden change but don't say anything. "You can wear my jersey."

"Ok fine." I smile at him. "A-" His phone rings and he raises a finger and answers it. I sit patiently for him to finish and when he hangs up he gives me an apologetic look. "Who was that?"

"David." I wince slightly at his name. "I'm so sorry Melody, I have to meet up for an um... emergency." He gets up gathering his stuff and I look at him baffled. Does this guy know how dating goes?

"Of course you do. Bye!" I roll my eyes. He looks back at me with his horrible sad blue eyes.

"Mel-" He starts.

"Bye!" I shout, waving my hand to dismiss him. I never thought dating would be like this. I was unhappy, and hurt. Cameron's phone rungs again.

"I'll make it up to you I promise." I look in the distance as my response. he bends down to kiss me but I dodge. He looks back one last time and walks away. I watch him in sadness, my eyes swell up with tears but I fight them back. I stayed on the bench staring at the other couples walking hand in hand, and kissing and acting cute. I snap out of my thoughts at the sound of my phone pinging.

"Hey girl, want to go job hunting with me. Mum just cut off my weekly allowance?"-Dumbo. I smile in relief at Ali's text and gather my stuff.

...

I met up with Alice near Krispy Kreme's. It's seems last minute but I really need to find a job and make money since we're always complaining about how broke we are. Plus I wanted to distract myself from the whole boyfriend thing.

"Hey you ready?" Alice says wearing a neat white blouse and a slim short black pencil skirt.

"I mean you could have told me there was a dress code now I look basic." I point at her smart outfit.

She laughed getting out her phone. "I need to get into the business woman mood." She says matter if factually.

"Ali you do realize that we are looking for jobs not starting a company?" I laugh as I link my arm with hers and we head to the beach.

The first destination was the ice cream shop. They always that hire sign. We enter the shop and I tap on the bell. A tall young boy who looked around our age looked at us and was wearing a ridiculous ice cream cone hat on his head.

"Welcome to the happiest place on earth, what can I get you?" He said in a bored voice. First a very colorful uniform he looked bored out of his mind.

"Well we saw that you were hiring so we are interested in the job."

"Sure stay here I'll get the boss." He walked off.

Ali leaned over to me, "I don't know if I want to work here, I mean the hat is pretty ridiculous."

"Same but hey its all about the money and I have reached the kind of broke which I don't care if I'll be cleaning the park." Since my parents think I'm old enough to make my own money but not old enough to go out then I must get a job quickly if I can go out with my friends. The boy reappeared and told us to follow him into his boss's office. The boss was a small plump man.

We sat down on the small chairs and tried our hardest to look advertising and serious. Ali even went far to cross her legs, clutch her hand and put it on the table staring intensely at the boss.

"Hello, my name is Mr Johnson and you are."

"Hi my name is Melody." i give a shy wave, acting like I didn't just decide to look for a job fifteen minutes ago.

"And my name is Alice Elizabeth Cordillia Groover." Ali smiled sweetly.

"Ok." Mr Johnson smiles awkwardly at her. He asks us both our ages and our IDs. "Well let's get started shall we. Why should I hire you."

"Because you are hiring." Ali say. I square my eyes at my friend.

"Um, ok but tell me something about yourself." He says looking taken back.

"We are really good at talking and..." I look at Ali.

"We think we can multitask, oh and we can smile." Alice says. We both smile and Mr Johnson. We are so not getting this job, I internally face palm.

"Interesting." He scratches his brow and reads the next question. "What is your greatest strengths."

"I have a good memory." I defiantly do not but it's to make me look good.

"I'm good at saying no and knowing my limits. You know around those difficult customers." Ali informs.

"Can you give me an example of how that is useful?" Mr Johnson asks writing down on a pad of paper.

"No I cannot." Ali smiles giving Mr Johnson a see look. Proud as if she won a Grammy award. I try my hardest to not laugh.

"I-" He opened and closed his mouth and cleared his throat. "Fine last question. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

Ali and I look at each other. What the hell I don't know in bed sleeping. "Ok in a year."

Silence.

"Any future plans at all?"

We looked at each other. "Well I'm going to finish my English assessment before the due date." i mumble. Mr Johnson puts the pen and paper down and rakes a hand through his grey and blond hair.

"You know what, we have been looking to hire for a while and to be honest all you need to do is scoop up ice cream and put the money in the till." Ali and I exchange looks again. No he won't hire us. Will he? "Do you know basic math." We both nod.

"Fine you got the job, come next Monday to start. You work on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays." we both get up and shake his hand excitedly. This is my first job! The man ushers us out of his office and we both squeal in happiness, doing some funny dances and order some ice cream to celebrate. This is going to be fun.
