Chapter 1
I can't believe that my parents and I actually moved. A few months ago they told me the news. My dad got this huge job offer in Richmond that has to do with rebuilding the whole city. He said this opportunity only comes once in a life time for someone like him. Translation, people who live in New York with barley any money in my dad's position never get an offer like this. So here we are in this little place called Albany that's only a few minutes away from Richmond. The worst part is that I'm a senior in high school and school has been going for two months already. Not only am I the new student but I'm the new student starting school with the school year already started. Today is my first day at Albany High School. Pretty much the only thing I'm looking forward to today is talking to my boyfriend after school so I can tell him all about. We've been dating for only four months now but when I told him I was moving and that we should break up he told me we could make it work.
I go into the office to get my class schedule. The building is three stories tall made of glass with red trims. Next to that looks like and art building since it has paintings all over it.
"Alright Alina here is your class schedule. Your first class is world history on the second floor in room two-fifteen. Have a nice first day." The office lady slides my paper over to me with a smile. She's short with a blonde pixie cut.
"Thanks." I smile back politely. Here we go. I'm already late for my first period so I take the steps two at a time and walk quickly down the hall. Two-twelve, two-thirteen, two-fourteen, two-fifteen. I stop in front of the closed door taking a deep breathe. I put my hand on the doorknob, slowly push it open, and walk inside. Great everyone's looking at me like I killed someone.
"Hello, can I help you?" The teacher asks still writing notes on the board.
"I'm new here and this is my first period class." Please just give me a seat already so everyone will stop staring at me. She walks over toward me smiling.
"Welcome to Albany! What's your name and where are you from?"
"Alina and I moved here from New York City." I nervously fiddle with my class schedule in my hand.
"Class this is Alina she just came her from New York City. Let's give her a warm welcome." Wow this is one energetic teacher for eight in the morning. Students yell or say hello and a few wave.
"Hi." I wave back with a small smile.
"Go ahead and take a seat behind Drake in the third row." I run my hand thru my dark brown hair with natural golden high lights then head down the aisle to my new seat. David turns around with his hand extended.
"Hi I'm Drake. If you have any questions or need any help around the school don't be afraid to ask me" He smiles showing his shiny white teeth. He has brown eyes and nice light sun tanned skin.
"Alina and thanks I might take you up on that." We shake hands then he turns back around after the teacher tells him to. The guy next to me turns to face me with a cocky smirk on his face.
"Did anyone ever tell you, you have beautiful green eyes?"
"What a lame pick up line Jordan. Don't listen to him he flirts with every girl in the school." The girl behind me says.
"Actually my boyfriend tells me that all the time." I smirk back at him and hear Drake, the girl behind me, and a few other people laugh. Jordan looks back down at his paper still smirking. My next two periods aren't that hard to find since they are on the same floor. So far I've had world history, Spanish, and I'm in English right now. The teacher tells me we today we are working in groups and to choose any group with three people in it. I look around from table to table. Then I see a table group with only three students. I walk over and take a seat smiling at them. It's the three students from my history class, Drake, the guy that tried to hit on me, and the girl who was making fun of him. I slide into the desk next to Drake.
"You just couldn't get enough of me could you Alina?" Jordan doesn't seem like the type to give up easily.
"The only person I can't get enough of is my boyfriend." How many times am I going to have to say boyfriend until he gets that I am taken? He's kind of boney, white with blonde hair, and blue eyes. I'm half black and half white and five-five which is a bit on the shorter side. My hair is long and straight with natural golden blonde highlights and thick curls throughout it along with light green eyes.
"My names Jessie but everyone calls me Jes." She has light skin, light brown eyes, and straight dirty blonde hair. She's also tall and stick like.
"Hi jes. Your Drake and Jordan right?" I say pointing to each of them as I say their names. They nod yes. "What are we supposed to be doing in this group?"
"We are assigned with making a power point presentation on the Armenian genocide." Drake says sighing. "So far it is easy but really boring. We are basically done I'm just going to double check a few things when I get home which means we can work on other stuff for the rest of the period."
"Do we have to present it in front of the class?"
"Yeah tomorrow we will be presenting third. Do you know about our class schedule?" I hate speaking in front of large groups. My cheeks get a bit red, my voice starts shaking, and my hands always get clammy.
"No what about the class schedule?"
"We have this thing called a block schedule. On Monday's we have all our classes for fifty-two minutes. Tuesday and Thursdays we have our odd periods for an hour and forty-five minutes and Wednesday and Friday's we have our even period classes for an hour and forty-five minutes. Can I see your class schedule?" I take it out of my big black fake leather purse and hand it over to Drake. He turns his body toward me so we are facing each other. "You have world history, English, and Algebra two on Tuesday and Thursday. On Wednesday and Friday you have Spanish and ceramics. We have almost all our classes together." He smiles. "History, English, ceramics, and algebra two I have all those at the same time as you. You're lucky you only have five periods the school usually doesn't do that."
"Yeah that would be nice." The next too periods go by fast. Drake helps me in ceramics class with what we are supposed to do and in algebra I just sit, listen, and take notes. When the bell rings I'm the first one out of the classroom racing home. I've only been here five days and already I just want to go back to New York. I put my headphones in and start walking the three blocks home. Then I feel a tap on my shoulder.
"Hey Alina." Drake says.
"Hi Drake. Don't you have class?" Is this guy stalking me?
"No its lunch right now and we are allowed off campus. School is also over for me since I only have five periods too." I nod my head slowly continuing to walk toward my house.
"How was your first day at school?"
"It wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be. I'm sure people will stop staring at me like I'm crazy once I've been here for a while. Everyone's pretty nice out here." People have asked me about New York and if we can hang out. I think it won't be so hard to make friends out here since everyone seems fascinated with me. I'd appreciate if they would stop staring at me though. Its nerve wrecking and it makes me feel like I have something on my face. One more block to go then I can call Mark.
"Yeah, Albany is a pretty nice community. Students always try to become friends with the new kid too but I'm not sure why."
"Most of them have been guys so maybe they all want to be friends with me for my good looks and to get into my pants." I laugh.
"Probably," He laughs, "I've noticed that you have a good sense of humor."
"My friends back at home told me that too but it comes and goes. This is my stop though so I'll see you tomorrow." I stop in front of my house.
"If you need anything I'm three houses away from you. Don't hesitate to come over." He smiles and waves walking to his house. I walk up my front porch happy to be able to get away from this strange unknown place. The only place I really know is this house.
"Your home really early Hun is everything okay?" My mom asks when I walk into the kitchen.
"I only have five periods so I'll be getting out of school really early for now on." I grab a coke out of the fridge and start going up the stairs to my room.
"I'm going to work I won't be back till late though and same with your dad so you'll have to make yourself dinner. You might have to do this for a few weeks thought since your dad and I have a weird schedule for a while." My mom yells to me.
"Okay." I yell back down then run up the rest of the stairs into my room closing the door behind me. I throw my bad on the floor and hop on my bed pulling my phone out. I speed dial three and wait. Then he answers.
"Hey, Al!" My heart flutters at the sound of him saying my nickname.
