chapter one
Morning After
ELI SHUFFLED INTO HEYWARDS RIGHT AFTER the storm. The generators owned by the Worthington's had completely backfired meaning, they'd have to make due with candles and flashlights. Their fridge also spoiled all the food after having no power, figures that would happen.
Pope seen the boy immediately, letting his eyes roll as Heyward hit his sons arm lightly, plastering a smile on his face.
"You didn't have to come pick your order up, Elijah. We got you on the drop off list." The man spoke, folding his hands in front of him. The man was never one to suck up to children but, this child happened to be rich as hell with tons of money to burn.
"I was uh..." Eli looked around carefully, coming up with a response. "I was coming down this way anyways, Kira's visiting her parents right now and I drove. Don't worry, I still have your tip money right here."
"Pope—" Heyward stared at his son, narrowing his eyes carefully when he realized the teen wasn't going to move. "You know what, i'll get it for you."
The man walked away, leaving the two "rivals" alone. Elijah smiled, making his way over to the counter the other boy was leaning on as he leaned on it too, both of them slightly too close for comfort. Well, for the comfort of Pope, at least, his breath hitching slightly.
"Do you enjoy messing with me?" The Heyward boy questioned, furrowing his brows. "There's no competitions to beat me in till school starts again so you are trying to get in my head some other way?"
"Am I?" The Worthington boy grinned with a slight shrug. "I didn't even notice."
"You are insufferable, really." Pope rolled his eyes, tapping his foot on the ground repeatedly.
"Are you using big boy words to confuse me? You do realize we basically have the same grades every year right?" Eli ran his hands through his hair slowly, actually looking into the other boys eyes.
"Don't remind me." The Heyward boy mumbled before speaking up slightly. "Because by the end of all this, you'll get into a good college because you're rich, and you'll still be a Kook living on figure eight while I won't be so lucky. It's bull."
"Do you really think my goal is to stay a Kook? I don't want to feel held down by this place anymore, and if you were as smart as I know you are, you wouldn't let it hold you down either." Elijah straightened himself up, wearing a confidant smile. "Pogues and Kooks? They don't exist outside of here, they don't matter, and the sooner we all get out of the cycle, the better all our lives will be."
"I thought you were like a die hard Kook." Pope eyed the other boy, trying to see what his game was, the other boy always had some type of game, maybe this time... he was just speaking freely?
"I wasn't born a Kook, and if I wasn't adopted, none of those people would ever give my sister and I the time of day. So yes, I embrace what I have but I don't want it to be the rest of my life." Eli sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Don't fucking tell anyone about all this or i'll kick your ass, got it?"
"Got it." Pope cleared his throat as his dad came in, clearly upset by something.
"Where the hell is their order, son? I can't find it." Heyward questioned, throwing his hands in the air.
"Oh, I uh, put it separate, i'll show you where it is." The boy started to walk outside, the two other people in the room following behind him and outside.
"This is convenient." Eli mumbled lightly, folding his arms behind his neck as he watched Pope and Heyward both get on the boat.
After a few seconds, they both emerged with two bags in their hands, the Worthington boy outstretching his hands to take them.
"Thank you." He smiled lightly but, it was completely lost upon hearing two Pogues coming his way.
"Well, look who we have here." JJ called out, making radio noises, Eli rolled his eyes slightly before folding his arms over his chest. The two were on their boat, sailing through with ease.
"We have a safety meeting, attendance mandatory." John B called out, looking towards the Worthington boy. "Kook."
Elijah sent the boy a smile before setting down his bag and flipping him off.
"I can't, my pop's got me on lockdown." Pope replied solemnly, trying not to make eye contact with the other boy while his friends were there.
"Come on man." JJ cupped his hands over his mouth. "You're dads a pussy, over."
"Oh, I heard that, you little bastard." Heyward replied, glaring at the two boys heavily.
"I need to get out of here, too much Pogue in one area for me." Elijah picked up his bag, digging in his pocket for cash to give to the older man. "Have a good day, sir."
"Man, why can't you hang out with kids like this, Pope?" Heyward questioned, letting out a faint sigh as he gently took the money from Eli's hand.
"It's the rules." They both said at the same time, Eli walking away before the conversation could continue.
Pogues and Kooks shouldn't mingle.
BEFORE LONG, ELI AND KIRA WERE ON THEIR WAY home. Of course, they still had to get through the cut but, it wouldn't take very long and they'd be home in way less than an hour. Or at least, that is what both siblings thought, until they were passing by Barry's lot which was on the way home from Kira's parents.
"Is that Rafe's bike?" The Worthington girl tapped her foot on the ground, biting her lip lightly before speaking. "Stop the car."
"What?" Elijah raised a brow at that, shaking his head. "No, i'm not going to leave my sister at a fucking drug dealers house."
"So wait for me." Kira held the door handle and her brother knew good and well she'd jump out of the car unless he stopped so, he pulled down into the lot and parked. "Thank you."
She quickly got out and bursted through the house, if one thing was for sure about her, it was that she was a ride or die friend and not scared of very much. Eli could never understand the concept, sure, he loved Sarah with all his heart but he wasn't sure the lengths he would go through to save her. Then again, he had never been put through this sort of situation with her.
Not yet at least.
After about a minute of waiting, the two came out, Kira holding Rafe by the ear lobe.
"What the hell is going on?" Eli asked as he put down his window, bending over to look through it.
"We're driving him home, he is completely drugged up and can get his bike another time." The Worthington girl opened the back door, ushering her best friend in.
"Dhdjdidid." Rafe slurred his words, mumbling something under his breath as he sprawled across the back seat, his eyes closed.
"Well, this should be a fucking mess to deal with." Eli leaned his forehead against the wheel, letting out a small sigh.
But this was just the beginning.
