Chapter 3

Duskkit and Nightkit were sitting next to Dawnkit. Nightkit once or twice tried to sneak a peek at Sorrelflight giving birth, but Fernseed would block her every time. Screeches and yowls were errupting from the nursery, not quite but drowning out the sounds of Frostcloud helping the queen calm down. The yowls stopped, but there were muffled cries of pain followed by the sound of a stick splintering. Dawnkit knew hat Sorrelflight had crushed a stick, so she went to find another one.

She walked around for a it, looking for a stick in the clearing. There were a few, but none were sturdy enough. Dawnkit ran to her siblings and told them this.

"Where can we get a sturdy stick?" she wondered aloud.

"Maybe there's one in the forest!" Nightkit said.

"But we're not allowed  in the forest," Duskkit pointed out.

"So what? I'm sure that it should be okay! We're helping a queen kit for the first time," Nightkit retorted.

"What do you think, Dawnkit?" Duskkit asked.

"Fernseed is busy. She can't go. Everyone else is either doing their duties, or are sleeping, somehow," Dawnkit said. "We're the only ones who can go." Duskkit groaned, but reluctantly muttered an agreement.

The three kits ran to the entrance, but they could see that Willowcloud and Gorseclaw were coming back from hunting. The kits quickly leaped into the warriors' den, which was next to the entrance, and once the warriors had run to the nursery to help Willowcloud's sister, the three kits ran past the entrance and into the forest.

"Look! There are a ton of trees! We could easily look for one here and run back in!" Dawnkit thought aloud.

"You can do that, while I explore the lake... 'to get water soaked in moss for Sorrelflight,'" Nightkit stated cheekily, running off.

"Nightkit, n-" Duskkit called, while Dawnkit slapped her tail over his mouth.

"You stupid furball! Every warrior in the forest will know we're here now!" she hissed.

"S-sorry," Duskkit said.

"You find a stick," Dawnkit ordered. "I'll go get Nightkit."

Without waiting for an answer, Dawnkit sped off, trying to run through the bracken, following her sister's scent. Finally, she saw her sister's black pelt splashing in the water.

"Why does Fernseed say that water is horrible and cold?" she said. "It's amazing!"

"I'm sure that if we even make it to our warrior's ceremony you can ask Silverstar to make you Nightsplash," Dawnkit said sarcastically. Nightkit ran towards Dawnkit.

"Come on," Nightkit urged. "It's so much fun in the wa- DAWNKIT LOOK OUT!" Dawnkit turned around.

A giant wave swallowed the small calico, its currents tossing her about like kits with a mossball. Dawnkit couldn't breathe, and her tiny paws could hardly move against the current.

This is it, she thought. This is where I die. There's no way I could live.

The last thing she could see was a black pelt in the water, before her eyes closed, and she was swallowed into darkness.

-

"DAWNKIT!" Nightkit screeched as her sister was taken by the waves. Not knowing what to do, Nightkit jumped in herself, and swam as hard as she could towards Dawnkit. She could see movement in the forest from the corner of her eye, but that didn't matter. All that mattered now was saving Dawnkit. She watched as her sibling, the last sibling to be born in their litter, closed her eyes, and stopped fighting the waves.

"NO!" Nightkit pushed harder than she ever thought she could, and grabbed her sister's scruff with her teeth. Now she needed to bring her back to the surface, which was a lot harder with a weight in her teeth. Nightkit swam as hard as she could until her heart was beating so fast it felt as fast as a storm could roll in on a dark day. She continued swimming until she felt the wet sand underneath her paws; it was then she dropped Dawnkit on her back. Nightkit started pressing against Dawnkit's stomach, hoping the water would come out of her mouth.

"Dawnkit... come one... fight like the fighter I know you are..." Nightkit pleaded. "This is my fault. I suggested to come out into the forest, and I was the one who ran to the lake. We never should have left camp. Dawnkit, I will take up every punishment in the world for you to live. Just please wake up. I'm not giving up on you." Nightkit sighed. It was no use.

Dawnkit suddenly gave a jolt and spluttered out water from her mouth.

"DAWNKIT!" Nightkit screeched, and jumped onto her sister. "Come on, we need to get you to Frostcloud."

"I'll escort you two." A new voice sounded. Nightkit turned around and saw a black warrior looking at them, not angry, but not relieved either. It was more... disappointed.

"B-Blackstorm?" Nightkit stuttered.

"I heard you screech Dawnkit, so I ran to the lake where I had heard it. I saw Dawnkit thrashing in the waves, but I didn't have time to save her. But thankfully, you were there. Now both of you need to go back to camp. Now. Where's Duskkit?"

"He *cough* is supposed to be *cough* in front of camped looking for a stick for *cough* Sorrelflight to vite while she gives birth," Dawnkit coughed.

"So you came out to find a stick she could bite?" Both the kits nodded. "Well, I appreciate you were trying to do something nice, but you know you could have just asked one of the warriors int he area to find one. Like Fernseed, or, I don't know, there were a ton of cats in the area. We could have even spared an elder! But kits... you are the future of our Clan. You can't just run off. Let's get back to camp."

Blackstorm picked up Dawnkit, and told Nightkit to get on his back. Nightkit was so exhausted she didn't even care that she was in trouble. She had saved her sister.

That was all that mattered.

Nightkit curled up and fell asleep.

-

When she woke up again, Dawnkit's eyes were still closed. She felt the soft moss of a nest under her fur, and there was something on top of her. It was soft too. Dawnkit opened her eyes. There was a layer of moss on top of her. Dawnkit stood up and shook the moss off of her. She was in the Medicine Cat's den. She couldn't remember why, until it came flooding back to her. Thrashing about in the waves, a black pelt swimming towards her, Blackstorm taking Nightkit and herself back to camp.

"So, you're finally awake." Dawnkit spun around to see a tortoiseshell she-cat standing there.

"Who - who are you?" Dawnkit asked, scared.

"Tell your sister that what your brother said was important," the she-cat said, ignoring Dawnkit's question.

"Who are you? And why can't you tell her yourself?" Dawnkit repeated.

"You're right, I probably should. Nightkit won't believe you otherwise. She's coming now." Dawnkit spun around to see Nightkit appearing in another nest. She seemed to appear as quickly as the tortoiseshell had appeared. Nightkit stood up, then took notice of Dawnkit.

"Dawnkit?  Wait a minute. And - your name is Spottedleaf, right?"

The second she-cat's eyes widened in surprise.

"How - how did you know?" she wondered aloud.

"Well... I... I don't know, actually. It felt like how I would feel when I had already known you, like, if you had been in my Clan ever since I had been born. "

Spottedleaf shook her head. "I've never met you before. And you have never met me. But be warned; take heed to what words your brother said to you."

"Then why does your name sound so familiar?" Nightkit said.

"Spottedleaf, right? But why?" Dawnkit inquired.

"It's a prophecy," she answered.

"B - but I can't remember it properly," Nightkit stated, a bit worridley. "I wasn't paying much attention."

"Then pay attention now, little one," Spottedleaf ordered. "From Dusk to Night, the prophecy will come. From Night to Dawn, a journey will be done. And Dusk to Dawn will save the Clans."

"But - but what does it mean?" Dawnkit asked.

"That you will have to figure out yourself." Spottedleaf started to fade away.

"Wait! I have more questions!" Dawnkit called.

"Me too!" Nightkit agreed.

"Are you a ThunderClan cat?"

"Are you related to us?"

"Which leader were you under the rule of?"

"I'll answer the last question," Spottedleaf told them. "I was under the rule of Bluestar when I died."

-

Nightkit jerked awake, feeling the same feeling as she did while meeting Spottedleaf. There was moss beneath her, moss on top of her, both soft. She slowly stood up to see if she was still in a dream, but Frostcloud was there, so unless Nightkit or Frostcloud could walk in other cats' dreams, it couldn't be one.

That got Nightkit thinking. How did she know Spottedleaf's name when she hadn't even mentioned it? It was as if she had known Spottedleaf all her life, but she hadn't even met Spottedleaf before. It was like knowledge, stored at the back of Nightkit's brain, that she had just unlocked when she saw the tortoiseshell she-cat...

Was there something about Nightkit that made her different from other cats?

Dun dun dun... does Nightkit have Jayfeather's mind-reading? Or did she already know who Spottedleaf was? And also, ho did Spottedleaf come back? PM me for spoilers cause I am all about spoilering stuff for other people : )

Btw, Sorrelflight had two kits, and I'm sure you want to know their names and gender, and JUST CONFIRMING, THORNSCAR IS SORRELFLIGHT'S MATE. HE IS THE FATHER. SO DON'T ASK CAUSE I WON'T ANSWER. I am honestly kind of happy this is out. SOMEHOW I was able to write this in one or two hours.
