Chapter 7

"Keep moving. Don't let them surround you. Failure is not an option!" Leo shouted as he ran around the warehouse, dodging blasts from the Kraang guns.

"Technically, failure is always an option," Donnie spoke up.

"You know what else is an option? Slapping you!" Raph replied and Shadow snorted a laugh.

"Mikey! On the right!" Donnie warned his little brother.

"Your right or my right?" Mikey asked before the Kraang droid began shooting at him so he quickly ran away.

Donnie jumped in and hit the Kraang over the head, doing absolutely nothing. "Are you kidding me? I hate this thing!"

A said came flying in before Raph finished the job. "Nice work. When we're done here, there's a marching band that needs a majorette."

"Kraang, the present is being a positive time to be the testing of the energy cannon," one droid said to another as the turtles and Shadow took down their forces.

Two droids opened big doors, letting more Kraang through with a giant cannon.

"Everyone stand your ground!" Leo ordered as hey grouped together. The cannon powered up and Leo's eyes widened. "On second thought, run!"

The Kraang fired the cannon and the group leapt out of the way.

Shadow jumped from the crates to avoid getting hit like the other.

One blast took off the top of Donnie's staff. "Oh, come on!"

"Dude, your weapon just exploded!" Mikey exclaimed with a grin.

"How am I supposed to fight advanced alien technology with a stupid stick?!" Donnie complained as he hid behind some crates.

The rest of the group fought the Kraang to the best of their abilities before being pushed towards a wall.

"Kraang, destroy those who call themselves the turtles when that which is the signal is the signal that is given by me!" One of the Kraang droids directed.

"Blue, got any ideas?" Shadow asked with a hopeful expression.

Leo looked at her and then hummed before grabbing a star. He squinted his eyes before making sure Shadow was watching, throwing the star. It bounced off a few surfaces before hitting a button a nearby forklift. The lift rammed into the Kraang cannon, making it explode.

Shadow's eyes brightened as she nudged Leo. "That was impressive."

They jumped out the window and Leo chuckled lightly with a bright smile. "I guess it was pretty impressive."

"Dumb luck," Raph brushed it off.

Leo grinned with pride. "Wasn't luck, my friend. And dumb had nothing to do with it."

"Hey. Give me a hand with this," Donnie directed their attention to him dragging something out of the window.

"A hand with what?" Leo asked and Donnie looked back to the window.

"Here, I'll help you, Donnie," Shadow said as she climbed up to help pull.

The Kraang droid came through the window and Donnie brushed his hands off.

"We're carrying this thing because why?" Raph questioned as they dragged it to the manhole cover.

"Don't you want to understand how these things work?" Donnie asked as he looked at Raph.

"I know how they work. You hit 'em till the brainy toy surprise pops out," Raph replied with a grin.

"That's your problem, Raph. You never think things through," Donnie said as he put the Kraang droid into the open manhole, letting it sit there.

"Was that supposed to fit?" Raph teased and Shadow giggled behind her hand.

Donnie grimaced, kicking the droid to make it go in.

Shadow looked at her phone and hummed before clearing her throat. "I gotta go guys. I'll see ya around."

"Wait! My third guess for the night!" Leo reminded and Shadow smiled at him. "Julia?"

"Wrong again," Shadow replied with a grin.

Leo slumped so Shadow leaned into his side.

"I'm sure you'll get it. Until next time, tartaruga," Shadow said before jumping up the fire escape and onto the roofs above.

"What did she call you?" Mikey asked in confusion.

"Tartaruga is Italian for turtle," Donnie said as he finally got the robot down the manhole.

"So she was speaking Italian all those times?" Raph inquired. "Kinda cool."

"She's awesome," Leo mumbled.

"Alright, loverboy. Let's get moving," Raph said as he shoved into Leo's arm.

Leo huffed but followed his brothers down into the sewers.

🍕

"This technology is light-years ahead of anything I've ever seen! Do you know what this is?" Donnie held up a piece pf Kraang tech.

"No," April replied blandly as she continued to type on her computer.

"Neither do I! But I can't wait to find out!"

"Look, Spike. Donnie got another stick to break," Raph teased as Splinter walked over with a new staff for Donnie.

"With all due respect, sensei, I can't keep fighting alien technology with a 6-foot staff. I was hoping to upgrade my weapon," Donnie said meekly.

Splinter hummed as he stroked his beard. "Mmm. A 7-foot staff. Interesting."

"No, I meant using modern technology."

"Aah, a solar-powered staff."

"I'm serious, sensei," Donnie said with a slight pout.

"I know. And yes, you may upgrade your weapon," Splinter replied with a grin.

"That's totally unfair! You can't just- wait, did you say yes?" Donnie looked at his father in shock.

"Ninjas have improved their arsenal for centuries. We are masters of adaptation," Splinter explained.

"That is great! 'Cause with this technology, I will be invincible! What should I make? Electric sais? Multi-shot shuriken? Plasma swords! I just gave myself goosebumps. You wanna feel?" Donnie looked over to April with a grin.

"Pass."

"But remember, technology is a means, not an end. It is you who must prevail in battle, not your weapon," Splinter reminded. "Combat is not a video game."

"That's it! I'll turn combat into a video game! Thanks, Sensei!" Donnie ran off into his lab, taking his Kraang droid with him.

"Leonardo, may I speak with you?" Splinter said and Leo looked up from sharpening his katana.

"Of course, Sensei," Leo said before standing to follow Splinter into the dojo. "Did you need something?"

"You mentioned earlier that the girl Mikey calls Shadow was there tonight," Splinter said as he looked at his eldest son.

"Yeah, she was already fighting the Kraang when we showed up," Leo replied and Splinter stroked his beard.

"I want you to be cautious of this girl. Kunoichi are known for their master manipulation and trickery. I fear that this Shadow may not be as trust worthy as she seems," Splinter warned.

"Sensei, with all do respect, you haven't met her. She really doesn't seem like she has any ulterior motives. She's playful and sweet. She gets along great with Mikey!" Leo said as his smile grew.

"But do you know anything about her?" Splinter asked as he raised a brow.

"Well, I know that she was trained by her mother who was also a trained kunoichi. She said her parents were from Italy so she speaks fluent Italian. She moved to New York when she was twelve, I think, or did she say eleven?"

"Do you know her name?"

"Well, no, but she has me guessing. Every time we see each other, I get three guesses. She thinks it's funny and honestly, it is kinda fun," Leo said and Splinter hummed.

He could see the look in his son's eyes. The fondness in his voice was very apparent.

"I caution you against relying on this girl too much. Until you know fully that you can trust her, just remain cautious," Splinter said, putting a hand on Leo's shoulder. "All I ask is that you choose your allies wisely."

"Hai, Sensei," Leo said as he bowed his head.

🍕

"Hey guys! Check out this post I got!" April called as she looked over to Raph and Leo who were playing a game.

"Hang on, April, I just have to destroy Lame-onardo." Raph grinned as he shot the finishing goal in the game. He chuckled as he did a little victory dance, knocking Leo over with a smirk. He then walked over to April to see what she found. "So what's up?"

Leo grimaced as he walked over as well, smacking Raph in the head as he sat down beside April.

"I set up a message board to collect unusual sightings around New York. People send in pics, videos I also get some stuff that may help us track the Kraang and find my Dad. Like this video of a gas explosion," April said as she showed then the video.

"A Kraang droid," Leo said as he watched the video.

Mikey woke up immediately from his place on the tire swing. "Where? Aah! Hunh!" He flopped off the swing and into the water below him.

"We'll check it out tonight," Leo said as he looked at April.

"Why not now?" April raised a brow.

"Because it's daytime. We can't let anyone see us," Leo reminded which made April frown.

"Well, I can," April said as she closed her laptop. She stood up and made her way to the exit of the lair.

"April, think about this. It could be dangerous," Leo warned as he followed her to the turnstiles.

"You know what else could be dangerous? Standing between me and my father," April responded as she jabbed a finger into his plastron.

"Okay," Leo said as he stood aside.

"Don't worry. Shadow gave me her number so I can ask her for help," April said as she held up her phone.

"Really? She gave you her number?" Leo perked up.

"Yeah. She's fun to talk to when I'm bored," April said as she continued to leave.

Leo quirked his lip, wondering if Shadow would give him her number if he asked. Wait... he didn't have a phone to text her. Dang it!

"I'll be fine, Leo. Don't worry," April said before she left."

🍕

Sofia looked down into the alley before jumping down when she saw April.

"I'm here. Are the guys coming?" Sofia asked curiously.

"Not right now. It's too light out," April said as she smiled at the brunette. "Why?"

"They make this type of thing so much fun. Mikey makes me laugh. Raph is fun to fight with. Donnie impresses me with all his techy talk. And Leo is so adorable and I love watching him fight."

"I guess so, though I wouldn't say Leo's more adorable than Mikey," April said with a grin.

"I would," Sofia replied with a bright smile.

"By the way, I never got your name," April said as she crossed her arms.

"Sofia Dellucci. Pleasure to meet you," Sofia said with a cheeky grin as she held out her hand.

"April O'Neil," April replied with a smile.

"Keep that between us though," Sofia said with a grin.

"Is this about your and Leo's guessing game?" April assumed.

"Yeah. I think it's cute to see him try and guess my name," Sofia replied with a light laugh.

"You seem to really like him," April teased as a smirk spread across her face.

"We can talk about that later," Sofia waved it off. "You said you needed my help with the Kraang."

"Yeah, I have this video of a gas explosion happening. There were Kraang droids so I want to see what they're up to," April explained as she pulled up the video on her phone to show Sofia.

"Alright. I'm in," Sofia agreed.

🍕

Sofia and April tracked down the Kraang and snuck into the building.

They hid behind separate crates and listened to what the Kraang were saying.

"Is that which is the unstable mutagen ready for using in the experiment that Kraang is being ready to begin?" One droid asked.

"The unstable mutagen will be tomorrow unleashing in the water supply," the other Kraang answered monotonously.

Sofia's eyes went wide. "Mio dio," she whispered.

"The water supply? Oh, no," April mumbled under her breath.

"Many infected humans will mutation. This is being a good way to perfect the mutagen to the point of perfection," the Kraang continued to speak.

April turned to get a better look at the Kraang to see if anything else was gonna happen. She accidentally knocked into the crate she was behind and a fire extinguisher fell to the ground.

Sofia nearly died then and there as she and April shared frightening looks.

"Don't worry," Sofia said as she pulled out a katana. "I got this."

April nodded with a smile. "Got it," she replied but it was a little louder than she intended.

The Kraang droid turned towards the two girls and began walking towards them.

Sofia jumped on the droid's back and stabbed down into it's head. She pulled her sword out of the droid and flipped off, landing on the ground with grace.

April watched her with wide eyes. "That was awesome."

"Thanks," she said with a grin. "Now, let's go tell the guys what we heard."

"Yeah!"

🍕

Sofia walked alongside April and her back straightened a bit as she looked at the redhead.

"They're here somewhere," April mumbled. "I can feel it."

"I agree," Sofia replied quietly.

"Hello?" April called out, keeping her voice soft. "Guys, it's me."

"April! Shadow!" Leo jumped down from the roof and Sofia's eyes lightened.

"Guys! We were just looking for you," April said as she looked at the turtles.

Sofia was about to make a comment before something fell into the dumpster behind her and April. The two girls jumped slightly as the dumpster fell over.

There was banging inside the dumpster which made Leo facepalm.

"Huh?" Sofia mumbled as she walked a little robot turtle walk out if the trash.

"Still, it's stealthier than the real Donatello," Raph teased.

"What the heck is that?" April asked as she stared at the machine.

"It's Donnie's latest brilliant creation, 'Metalhead'," Leo answered as he crossed his arms.

"Catchy name, huh? My idea," Mikey claimed with a proud grin.

"I like it," Sofia said as she slapped hands with the orange clad turtle.

"Shadow likes my naming skills! Aw, shell yeah!" Mikey gushed before there was a feedback sound.

"Sorry, April," the robot spoke with Donnie's voice through a screechy megaphone. "I'm still getting used to the controls. Whoops," the screeching stopped as Donnie figured out the buttons. "Megaphone button got stuck."

Sofia uncovered her ears from awful noise and she cleared her throat. "Anyways. There's something you gotta know."

"Maybe your name is a good start," Raph said as he narrowed his eyes at her.

"Shadow's right, guys. We gotta do something. The Kraang are gonna poison the city's water supply with mutagen!" April spoke up as Sofia tried to avoid Raphael's harsh gaze.

It was new and she wondered if she did something to upset the red clad turtle.

"The whole city will become a disaster area!" Leo realized as his eyes widened.

"There'll be mutants everywhere!" Donnie's voice came through Metalhead.

"Wow! Think of all the friends we can make!" Mikey exclaimed as he hugged the robotic turtle. Sofia gave him a lopsided grin. "Excuse me for being a 'glass-half-full' kinda guy."

Leo shook his head before grtting ready to run. "Let's go!"

"Yeah! The Kraang don't stand a chance!" Metalhead turned to follow the three turtles, but Leo held out a hand to stop him. "What?"

"Donnie, I need you to hang back. Metalhead is just too clumsy. It'll get in our way," Leo explained.

"Clumsy?" Metalhead threw out his arms, smacking two trash cans in his way. "I did that on purpose to emphasize my point."

"You're not coming, Donnie," Leo said as he grimaced.

"I don't think she should come either," Raph spoke as he motioned to Sofia.

"What? What'd I do?" Sofia asked as she held a hand to her chest.

"Yeah, what are you talking about?" Leo looked at Raph with confusion.

"How do you know if we can really trust her? I heard what Splinter said to you and I think he's right," Raph said and Sofia looked at Leo, wanting to know what Raph meant.

"We don't have time for this right now. She comes," Leo said sternly before he took off running.

Sofia stood there for a moment, not understanding what just transpired but she felt a bit uncomfortable. She just shrugged it off for now and followed the turtles.

🍕

"Looks like a Kraang picnic down there," Leo murmured as he scanned the scene below him.

"Ready to bash some bots?" Raph punched his hand with a grin.

"Destroy some droids?" Leo continued as his lips curled up.

"Punch some punks?" Shadow chimed in.

"Clean some closets?" Mikey smiled until he saw the looks his brother's gave him. "Uh, I meant to say crush some Kraang?"

Leo shook his head before jumping down, Shadow and Raph following suit.

They each took down a droid and Leo grinned as he looked at Shadow who gave him a wink.

"Booyakasha!" Mikey jumped down and took out the last droid. Raph had to pull him away kicking which made Shadow giggle.

She ran after Leo and grinned a little when she saw the Kraang droids turn to them. She immediately jumped into action, excited to have an actual fight.

Leo saw Raph give Shadow a narrowed look before joining the fight. It was distracting him. He felt in his gut that he could trust her, but what if Splinter and Raph were right? What if she was working with the Shredder?

"Leo!" Mikey shouted which drew him from his thoughts.

"Blue!" Shadow jumped onto him to knock him to the ground just before a shot flew over them.

"Thanks," Leo grumbled as he stood up and she nodded before continuing to fight.

"There everywhere!" Mikey cried out as he dodged shots from the Kraang blasters. "Run!"

"Leo, we're running out of room!" Raph grimaced as they ducked behind crates to avoid getting shot at.

"We're trapped!" Leo cursed as he tried to think of a way out.

"Or maybe, they're the ones who are trapped!" Mikey tried to be optimistic as he looked over the barrel he was using as a shield, only to be shot at. "No, it's us."

Shadow was about to say something when the sound of shattering glass drew their attention. She looked over to see Metalhead fall into the center of the room with his arms up.

"What are you doing? What is wrong with your arms?" Leo grimaced as he saw the robot.

"My hands aren't on my hips?" Donnie asked through the speaker.

"Nope," Shadow said with a lopsided smile.

"Sorry. Forgot to press B," Donnie said before Metalhead's arm found their place on his hips. The Kraang all took aim and started shooting, not even leaving a mark on the robotic turtle. "Now it's my turn! Eat hot laser!"

Metaohead began firing at the Kraang as Donnie laughed maniacally through the microphone.

"You want some of this? Whoo!" The purple clad turtles whooped. He shot the robot's hand off and it flew around, knocking out the Kraang droids in its path. "Yeah, baby! Hey Raph, how does it feel to be shown up by a toaster?"

Raph grimaced as Leo gave a little smirk up at his brother.

"Burn," Mikey said as Sofia peered over his shoulder.

"Yeah, I thought that was a good one," Donnie shot back pridefully.

"No! Burn!" Mikey cried as he pointed to some droids behind the robot.

"Oh. Right," Donnie said before making Metalhead blast fire at the Kraang.

"That thing which does violence at Kraang used to do violence for Kraang!" One droid complained before leaving his droid body.

Metalhead kept firing and Shadow shrieked as shots came at the four hiding behind the barrels and crates.

"Aah! Dude!" Mikey yelled.

"Oops! Sorry, Mikey."

"Donnie, watch the friendly fire," Leo said with a slight glare.

"Here's some for you! And some for you! And, oh, yeah, I saved a little for you too! How'd that taste?" Donnie continued to drawl out as he shot at the Kraang droids.

"Donnie! Watch out for-" Shadow tried to warn before Metalhead shot at some propane tanks, setting off an explosion.

The blast sent Metalhead flying backwards into a pillar, knocking his antenna loose.

The other four were recuperating from the blast. Shadow tried to help Raph up but he just pushed her hand aside.

"No! I lost the control signal! What's that Kraang doing?" Donnie wondered as he watched a Kraang climb up onto Metalhead's head. "Uh-oh. Guys, if you can hear me, you might wanna run!"

Leo helped Mikey up and they got ready to stand their ground as Metalhead approached them.

"The ones that which are called turtles will now be called turtles that are destroyed!"

"Whew! I was really afraid at the beginning of the sentence, but then I sort of just lost interest towards-" Mikey started before Metalhead aimed his laser at Mikey. "Ok. I'm afraid again!"

"Mikey!" Shadow cried out as she shoved him out of the line of fire. She hissed in pain as one of the shots hit her arm.

Leo swung his sword at the robot as Mikey looked at Shadow who was holding her injury.

"Are you okay?" He asked as he used his chucks to take the fire for them.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she replied with a thumbs up. "Come on."

She sucked in adeep breath before jumping onto the robot turtle.

The four kept attacking to no avail, but they refused to give up.

"Give him everything you've got. He's gotta have a weak spot!" Leo said as he sliced at the metal.

"This always works! Hiyah!" Mikey kicked the robot where the sun don't shine and they all winced at the sound of his foot hitting the metal. "Ow! Well, usually."

One by one, metal socked each turtle and Sofia, sending them flying.

"Now Kraang will destroy you. Which one wants to be first to be destroyed by Kraang?"

"Me!" A voice came from above as Donnie came through the hole in the glass roof.

"Donnie! Bangin' entrance, dude!" Mikey exclaimed happily.

"You guys deal with the droids. I'll handle Metalhead," Donnie said before they all took on their assigned foe.

"It is the maker of the tech which was the tech that was of the Kraang," Metalhead said as he looked at Donnie.

"Come on, gimme your best- gaah!" Donnie shrieked as Metalhead shot out his fist.

The purple clad turtle was able to swat it away before having to dodge the shots that came at him. He flipped out of the way and gasped as his stick was shot at, breaking in his grasp.

"Not again," he cursed as he looked at his broken weapon.

Metalhead shot out his eyeball bombs which blew up against the beam Donnie had been in front of before he had leapt out of the way.

The turtle saw the pillar's compromised structure and had an idea. "That might work," he mumbled before running back over to the beam. "Hey, Kraang! The one who is called your mother wears the boots that are made for combat!"

"The comment that is made by you shows ignorance of Kraang! The ones known by you as mothers-"

"Just come get me!"

Metalhead shot out more eyeball bombs at Donnie only for him to jump out of the way again. He launched himself over the robot and landed by some crates. He watched as the pillar began to fall.

Donnie held up his broken staff as the pillar fell onto of Metalhead, sending him into the end of the staff. Energy crackled around the metal puncture wound and Donnie's eyes widened.

"Booyakasha!" The purple turtle shouted with glee.

"Sounds weird when he says it," Mikey said as he looked at his brothers.

"Sounds weird when you say it," Taph replied, punching down the last Kraang droid.

"That which is the revenge will be had on those who are calling themselves the turtles," Metalhead said before the Kraang on his head jumped off onto Donnie's face, scurrying off right after.

"Nice job, bro!" Mikey cheered as Shadow gave Donnie a hand in getting up.

"Way to go, Donnie," Leo said as he clapped his brother on the shoulder.

"Yeah, not bad. Except for that part where you built the thing in the first place. And the part where it broke. And the part where it tried to kill us. And the part-" Raph berated before getting cut off.

"Ok, I get it," Donnie grumbled. "We should get home. Splinter's probably waiting for us."

"But what about your arm!" Mikey said as he turned to Shadow who was clutching her left arm.

"I'll be okay, Mikey. I promise," Shadow brushed it off.

"Let me take a look," Donnie said as he looked at her.

"She said she's fine. Let's just go," Raph grumbled, getting nudged by Leo. "What?"

"Did I do something wrong?" Sofia asked as she looked at Raoh with concern while Donnie looked at the wound on her arm.

"You just show up and act all buddy buddy, expecting to be friends right away. How do we know you're now working for the Shredder?" Raph asked pointedly with a glare.

"First of all, you were the one's who showed up out of nowhere. I was doing this for almost a year before you guys came along. Second, I've never even heard of this Shredder person."

Raph scoffed as he crossed his arms over his chest.

"Just wrap it up and keep it clean and you'll be fine," Donnie said quietly before stepping away.

"If you don't want to trust me, Raph, that's fine, but don't paint me as a bad guy. All I want to do is make the city a bit safer. I just thought that it was more fun once you guys came along, but if you don't want my help anymore then fine," Shadow said coldly as she turned around, walking to the exit.

"Wait, Shadow, don't leave!" Mikey ran after her.

"Sorry, Mikey, but I know when I'm not wanted," she replied before meeting into the shadows.

The orange turtle slumped and Leo frowned.

"That was harsh, Raph," Leo said to which the hothead rolled his eyes. "She never did anything to make us not trust her."

"She won't even tell us her name! You all trust her way to easily!" Raph shouted. "Splinter tried to warn you and you won't even listen to him!"

"Let's just go home," Leo said as he turned away from Raph.
