[35] An Impromptu Wedding
"Calla Lilies? That's a bit common, don't you think?" Lindsey comments when a bunch of Nia's friends start to place the flowers. The house is packed with Nia and Greg's closest friends and family, every one of them helping to set up the wedding.
"They're Nia's favorite flowers," A pretty ginger girl says and Lindsey strolls away, rolling her eyes. "Hey, you're Wyatt's sister, aren't you?" She looks at me.
"Yeah. How do you know him?" I ask.
Hearing Wyatt's name annoys me since I have been trying to call him for hours and the only response that I've been receiving is 'Hey, this is Wyatt. I'm probably sleeping or simply don't wanna talk to ya. Leave a message after the beep!'
"We used to date," she blushes. "He's such a cool guy."
"Yeah, he is," Ashleigh says with a big fake smile. "By the way, you're hanging the flowers upside down, Ginger."
"My name is Tiffany!" The ginger looks offended.
"Whatever. Why don't you go arrange the chairs or something?" Ashleigh suggests.
"Fine." Tiffany agrees and runs away.
"Jeez Ash, jealous much?" I tease.
"What? No! That airhead was ruining the flowers," she protests.
"Sure," I chuckle.
"Did I hear the name Wyatt?" Lindsey appears next to me out of nowhere.
"Nope," I lie.
"Wow, I could've sworn I just did," she purses her lips.
"Well, you didn't." Ashleigh rolls her eyes.
"I was just texting him, actually," Lindsey mentions. "I'm so glad I lost it to such a cool guy."
"Lost what?" I look at her, disgusted.
"Oh, you know, how Blair lost it to Chuck in the back his limo?" She bats her fake eyelashes.
"Okay, that's enough!" I yell.
"Seriously, no one likes you, Lindsey. Go away." Ashleigh narrows her eyes.
"Jealousy doesn't suit you, Ashleigh," Macey remarks, standing behind Lindsey. I groan at the sight of my wretched cousin. She and Alex had reached the house about an hour ago and Nia invited them to stay for the wedding.
"Go away you insipid little turd," Ashleigh responds and I laugh out loud.
"You go away you cheap harlot!" Macey snaps back. "Talk to me when you stop sleeping with anything that breathes."
"Isn't that what your best friend is doing?" Ashleigh raises an eyebrow, looking at Lindsey.
"Wyatt and I are going to be married one day," Lindsey informs us and Macey nods.
"You're delusional," I laugh. "Does my brother need to get a restraining order?"
"No she's not," says Macey.
"Hey Macey?" I look at her.
"What do you want, Fedora?"
"Why don't you go talk to your plants or something?"
"You're so stupid," Macey retaliates.
"Wow, that's like the worst comeback ever. I can't believe you share a sibling with her, Kat," Ashleigh laughs and I widen my eyes at her.
"What's she talking about?" Macey screeches.
"Um, nothing! My bad!" Ashleigh tries to cover up her mistake.
"That wasn't nothing. Don't lie to me!" She screeches again.
"Yeah, don't lie to her," Lindsey chimes in.
"Stay out of this, Lindsey!" I yell.
"Half an hour for the wedding!" Greg announces. Ashleigh and I speed away from Macey into the bedroom.
"Damn it, Ash!"
"Kat, I'm so, so, so sorry!" Ashleigh apologizes profusely.
"I guess she had to find out sometime. I just didn't expect it to be so soon," I sigh. "Ugh, I should have told her long ago. He's her brother too!"
"Seriously? Are you feeling sorry for Macey Gilbert? She's a bigger snake than Taylor Swift!" Ashleigh reminds me. She hands me an extra dress that she carried for me.
"I know, but still." I frown.
"You don't need to feel guilty." She braids her long blonde hair and ties it into a bun. It's crazy how effortlessly she pulls of such a chic hairstyle. "It's not like Colt wants to tell her anyway,"
"You're actually right," I realize. "He's literally never said anything about wanting to tell her."
"Or maybe that's because he knows how awful she's been to you and doesn't want to hurt your feelings," she shrugs.
"Not helping!" I groan and put on the dress.
"Damn, you pull that off well." Ashleigh remarks.
"Thanks!" I grin and take a look at myself. The pale blue dress stands out against my tan skin and my natural waves fall to my shoulders.
"Let's go."
We step out into the backyard that has been completely transformed. Fairy lights decorate all the trees and rows of white wrought iron chairs occupy the yard, surrounded by Calla Lilies. A floral arch stands in front of us and the guests start to take their seats.
I sit in the front row, next to Ashleigh and Wade, after making some polite small talk with him. A harpist sits towards our left, running her fingers through the strings, playing a sweet melody. It's crazy how they managed to do all this in less than a day.
"Hello, may I sit here?" An eccentric looking middle aged woman with a pixie cut asks us.
"Sorry, my aunt is going to sit here," Wade says. "Are you from the bride's side or the groom's?"
"The groom is an old friend of mine." She smiles and turns around, trying to find a seat at the back.
Will and his dad take their places near the arch. I hold my breath when I see him looking exceptionally attractive in a white shirt with a black suit and tie. I give him a quick wave that he returns.
"Oh, it's starting!" Ashleigh announces as Here Comes The Bride starts to play.
Everyone rises and turns around. The ginger from earlier-Tiffany- enters with another girl, and Nia follows them. She looks gorgeous, draped in a gown so white that it glows, emitting light of its own.
"That was my mom's dress," Wade smiles.
Nia walks down the aisle with a purple bouquet in her hands and I look back at Greg who starts to tear up.
"Aww!" Ashleigh looks awestruck.
The wedding sails smoothly with the usual 'I do's' and people tearing up all around us.
Nia throws her bouquet backwards and the lady with the pixie cut catches it.
"Oh, how wonderful!" She exclaims. She's dressed rather casually for a wedding in denim overalls that are splattered in red paint. At least I hope that it's paint. She sniffs the flowers and twirls around and runs into the house.
"What a weirdo." Ashleigh wrinkles her nose.
"Ash, don't be mean." I chuckle.
Live music starts and people start dancing and getting themselves drinks. I wave when I see Will coming towards me. He ignores me and goes back into the house.
"Ouch!" I say, taken aback.
"He probably didn't see you," Ashleigh shrugs.
"Yeah, probably."
I try calling Wyatt once again and he finally picks up.
"What's up, lil sis?"
"Where the hell have you been all day?" I demand.
"Sleeping off a hangover. Why?" He yawns.
"Where were you last night?" I ask.
"At a party. Hence the hangover," he says.
"Did you hook up with Lindsey?" I question and Ashleigh looks at me with her eyes wide, suddenly paying attention.
"Who?" Wyatt asks obliviously.
"Lindsey Grundy?" I roll my eyes.
"I don't even know a Lindsey Grundy. What's this about?"
"Oh, thank goodness! Bye!" I hang up before he can say anything.
"He has no idea who she is!" I say to Ashleigh and her face lights up.
"That no good lying little twit!" She says, looking Lindsey who is across the yard pouring herself some juice along with Macey, who notices us glaring at them.
"Oh no," I say when I see Macey marching towards us.
"We need to talk." She yells.
"Sorry, I gotta go...pee!" I run away, leaving her alone with Ashleigh. Oops.
Ashleigh catches up with me inside the house soon enough. We stay inside for a while, trying to hide from Macey, and then go back out for dinner.
"Where's Alex?" I notice that I haven't seen him after the wedding at all.
"He left a while ago," Ashleigh informs me. "Got called into work or something."
"Oh, weird."
"Hey," Will comes up to us and says.
"Hey! The wedding was so beautiful." Ashleigh gushes.
"Yeah, it was. Kat, can we talk? Alone?" He asks nervously, which makes me nervous too.
"I'll catch up with you later, Ash." I say and she nods.
We walk out to the driveway that's almost completely dark, far away from the celebration.
"Uh, look, Kat," Will awkwardly says.
"What's up?" I ask, wondering why he seems so nervous.
"Things have been great and all," He fidgets with his tie. "You've been great,"
"Will, what's this about?" I hold my breath, worried.
"I think we should cool off for a bit," He spits out after taking a deep breath.
"Wait, what?" I respond and he refuses to make eye contact with me.
"I'm sorry," He looks down at his feet. "It's not you, it's me."
"Are you kidding? Are you really using that washed up god forsaken line on me?" Tears start to sting my eyes, surprising me. I've never been a crier.
"I'm sorry, Kathryn." He says and walks away, leaving me dumbfounded, staring as his silhouette gets smaller and smaller.
