[34] A Run In With El Chupacabra

I admire my hands and feet. They look better than ever with matte black nail paint. Take that, Lindsey. That girl really gets on my nerves. I should get mani-pedis more often, they really do wonders.

Will and his dad seem to be in high spirits when they get home just in time for lunch. Nia prepares a pot roast that looks absolutely scrumptious. I don't remember the last time I had a proper home cooked meal. Wyatt and I aren't exactly Masterchefs.

"Honey!" Nia exclaims and runs up to Mr Wonka, kissing him long enough to make both Will and I uncomfortable.

"Did you have a good time?" I ask Will.

"Yeah, it was fun."

"Ah, so you must be the famous Kathryn that my son told me so much about!" Will's father says with a warm smile. The man seems like anything but cold and distant.

"It's nice to meet you, Mr Wonka." I smile back at him.

"Please, Mr Wonka is my father. Call me Greg!"

"Okay, Greg." I chuckle.

We sit at the long wooden table in the dining room and serve ourselves the pot roast.

"So," Will says after a while. "How do you and Kathryn know each other, Nia?"

"Oh! That's a funny story," She laughs nervously.

"Nia's brother is dating Ashleigh," I say.

"Really? Jeremy is your brother?" Will asks.

"Uh, no," She says.

"Holden?"

"Nope."

"Toby?"

"No."

"Zach! Her brother is Zach." I interrupt the seemingly never ending cycle.

"Actually, his name is Wade," Nia says awkwardly.

"Right, I'm so sorry!" I say quickly. What is wrong with me?! Who even is Zach?

"Oh, I don't think I know him," Will shrugs. "Does he go to our school?"

"Yeah, I think he's in my art class," I say.

"Oh, so you're dating someone young enough to be my sister?" Will questions his father. Nia's face turns red and I kick Will under the table.

"Ow!" Nia squeals.

Oops, I guess I kicked the wrong person.

"Will, did you just kick Nia?" Greg stares at his son.

"Sorry, I get leg spasms sometimes," Will shoots daggers at me with his eyes and I try hard not to laugh. His phone buzzes and he takes a look at it. "It's Alex."

"Is he still at the motel with Macey?" I ask.

"No, they spent the night at some place called Vladimir Creek," Will states, looking bewildered.

"Vladimir Creek? Sounds creepy." I observe.

"That's only a couple of miles away," Greg says. "But people from here don't go there often. The folks living there are a bit," He thinks for a second. "Selective of who they want around them."

"How are they getting here?"

"Apparently a goth princess is giving them a ride,"

"A real princess?!" Nia asks, excited, and Will rolls his eyes.

"I don't think so, dear." Greg smiles, making Will roll his eyes again.

We spend another twenty minutes eating after which Will and I make our way to the porch.

"Your dad seems really nice," I say, sitting on the swing on the porch.

"I know," Will agrees. "I'm glad you met him before you meet my mom."

"I'm going to meet your mom?" I ask.

"Actually, no, I sure as hell hope not. Heck, I don't even ever wanna see her again," He shudders. His eyes seem brighter than usual. Happier.

"Hey lovebirds!" Nia runs up to us with a big smile on her face, her arms intertwined with Greg's.

"Um, hey?" Will looks confusing.

"We're getting married today!" Greg exclaims and Nia does a little happy dance.

"Wait, what?" I ask.

"You're kidding," Will raises an eyebrow.

"No!" Nia denies. "We don't want a big ol' wedding anyway. Everyone we want will be here,"

"The most important one being you," Greg smiles.

"But where?" Asks Will.

"Right here in our backyard!" His father replies.

"That's incredible!" I get up and hug Nia, assuming that's an appropriate reaction.

"Wade is going to be here any time now with your friend Ashleigh," Nia says.

"That's great, dad. I'm happy for you," Will hugs his father.

"Thank you, son. Your blessing is what matters to me the most."

The couple go back in to make some quick wedding arrangements. Boy, they must have a lot to do. Imagine being so in love with someone that you'd marry them in a heartbeat.

"How do you really feel about this?" I ask Will when he throws himself on the swing.

"Honestly?" He shrugs, "Confused."

"About what?"

"I don't know anything about this woman and now she's going to be my stepmother."

"She seems to make your dad happy," I say.

"I guess that's what really matters," he states.

"I guess."

"I'll go and check if they need any help." Will says and I nod.

I sit silently on the swing for a couple of minutes, moving back and forth. The silence is broken by a familiar raspy voice that makes me roll my eyes every time I hear it.

"What are you doing here?" Lindsey asks, narrowing her eyes.

"What are you doing here?" I question.

"That's none of your business," She adjusts her pink sweatpants as they start to scrunch up. "What are you, trying to break in to rob the place or something?"

"Excuse me?" I demand.

"Well, you are dressed like a robber in that hideous black outfit."

"Guess we're not bothering with the niceties anymore," I observe.

"Guess we're not. So go away, you don't belong here," she snarls.

"I do, actually," I give her a fake smile. "It's my boyfriend's father's wedding."

"Nia is marrying that loser's dad? Seriously?" She looks surprised.

"Last time I checked, she wasn't marrying your dad," I chuckle at my own silly joke.

"Funny," she narrows her eyes again and drags her large magenta suitcase into the house. "Oh, and tell your brother that I had a really good time last night,"

"Bitch, what did you say?"

"You heard me. Guess he got all the good genes and you got... None?" She pushes her bottom lip out, trying to mock me.

"Whatever, chupacabra." I roll my eyes.

"What did you call me?" She glares.

"Nothing, chupacabra," I hiss.

"Who do you think you are?" She takes a step towards me.

"I'm Kathryn fucking Davis, who the fuck are you?" I curl my fists, pissed off. Wyatt and I have always been protective of each other. How dare she?

"I'm so glad I don't have to be nice to you anymore," she states.

"That makes two of us."

"You're going to hell for using that kind of language."

"Cool, I'll see you there!" I smile and walk past her, heading straight to the room I spent the night in. I take out my phone and text Jules.

Kathryn: I went on a spontaneous road trip with Will and now his dad is getting married.

Jules: Wait, WTF?

I fill her in on everything that happened including crazy Macey and finally defining my relationship with Will.

Jules: OMG, thats's amazing! I'm so happy for you. I gotta go now, tell Alex I said hi.

I go out to the backyard to see how the preparations are going.

"What do you mean you only have petunias? Who uses petunias for a wedding?" Will yells on the phone, walking up and down. "No, that'll not do. We want Calla Lilies and nothing else."

I chuckle when I see him all riled up over flowers. It's cute. A guy in a black leather jacket demanding Calla Lilies, I mean.

"The Calla Lilies are on their way," he grins proudly after hanging up.

"Good job!"

"What's wrong?" He asks.

"What do you mean? Nothing is wrong," I lie.

"Tell me," he insists.

"Lindsey's here," I sigh. "Apparently she's friends with Nia."

"That girl is the most annoying person I've ever met," Will admits. "Or maybe that's Macey."

"She said she slept with my brother," I blurt out. "Or at least implied it,"

"She's probably lying to piss you off," Will suggests.

"She's not, unfortunately," I turn around to see Ashleigh.

"Ash! When did you get here?" Will asks.

"Right now, I came with Wade," She says and Will nods and runs out when his dad calls out for him. "She hooked up with Wyatt at a college party last night," Ashleigh says when he leaves. She looks even more upset than I am.

"Really?" I ask.

"I was there and I was talking to Darla about how much I like him," She admits. "Lindsey overhead and took it upon herself to one up me."

"You like my brother?" I ask, surprised.

"I thought it's obvious," she shrugs.

"I mean, yeah, but I've never heard you actually say it," I say and she chuckles. "I can't believe he'd do that."

"Yeah, me neither," She sighs. "Anyway, screw that. Let's get ready for the wedding!"
