[25] I Knew I Wasn't Related To Those Whackjobs

I run. I just don't know what else I can do.

So I run. I run out of the house, without saying goodbye. I notice Will looking confused but I don't stop. Not even for him. It's all so overwhelming.

I run straight home, brake down, and spill it all to Wyatt. He doesn't look as shocked as I am. In fact he looks kinda...happy?

"YES! I KNEW I WASN'T RELATED TO THOSE WHACKJOBS!" He exclaims, pointing towards Macey's house.

"Really? That's what you got from everything I told you?" I demand.

"Well, I guess I kinda always knew," he says sheepishly.

"Wait WHAT?" I yell.

"We never looked alike, me and mom," he says quietly. "I always wondered why. I guess this explains it."

"Wow. So...so you're my half-brother." I state.

"Yeah, I guess." He replies.

"And Colt. He's my half-brother too." I say.

"You really believe him?" Wyatt asks.

"He looks so much like me." I frown.

"No he doesn't." Wyatt protests.

"Oh come on. You've never even seen him." I roll my eyes.

"Yeah, and I don't want to. He's trouble and you should stay away from him." Wyatt says, starting to get mad.

"He's my brother!" I scream. Wyatt looks really hurt.

"I'm your brother." He says.

"Of course you are, Wy. But he is too. And I have to find out more." I say a little more gently.

"You're right. I'm sorry." He says looking really upset.

"Hey, it's okay. I know that this is hard on you too." I say and hug him.

"I have an idea!" I exclaim.

"What?" He asks.

"Let's invite Colt over for dinner tomorrow night. We can talk all about this and you two can get to know each other." I suggest.

"Nah, I don't think that's necessary." Wyatt grumbles.

"Shut up. I'm texting him right now." I say and text Colt.

"But you don't even know that it's him for sure!" Wyatt says.

"Exactly! We need more information and this is how we can get it." I explain.

"Fine. Whatever." Wyatt says and goes up to his room.

Colt replies to my text immediately. He agrees to come over at 7 tomorrow. I'm dreading and looking forward to this dinner at the same time.

The next day at school, I apologize to Will profusely. I feel so guilty about running off like that. I explain everything to him and he tells me that he's going to be there for me no matter what.

I feel myself falling for him. Oh, who am I kidding? I fell for him a long time ago. I thank him and wrap my arms around him as we stand against my locker. He pulls my face closer to his and my eyes are in line with his crooked nose. Who knew that it was possible to find a nose so attractive? I stand on my toes and place my lips on his gently.

"Jeez guys. Get a room." Ashleigh laughs. We pull away and join into her laughter.

We walk to the cafeteria to grab some lunch.

"Colt ditched school again. Shocker." I roll my eyes.

"Do you believe him? 'Cause he's shady as hell." Ashleigh remarks.

"I don't know. I guess I'll find out today."

I go up to my room and put on some fresh clothes after school. I brush my hair and put some concealer under my eyes to hide the puffiness from all the crying. I've never been much of a crier but all this, it's just too much. I'd be lying if I say that I'm not excited about the idea of having another brother though.

"Kathryn!" I hear Wyatt yell.

"What?!" I yell back.

"Um, Colt's here!" He yells awkwardly. I didn't even hear the doorbell ring. I rush downstairs.

"Keep it together." I whisper to myself.

"Hey." Colt says as I walked towards him. I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Am I supposed to shake his hand? Give him a hug? A high five? I settle on a small wave.

"Hey Colt. I'm glad you could make it." I smile.

We eat for a few minutes in awkward silence.

"So...Colt. Are you a liar?" Wyatt asks, suddenly.

"What the hell, Wyatt?" I say immediately, giving Colt an apologetic smile.

"What? You're wondering the same thing." Wyatt shrugs.

"I'm not lying." Colt states.

"Well, then how are you alive?" Wyatt questions.

"Wyatt!" I snap.

"It's okay. Being asked direct questions is better than awkward small talk." Colt chuckles.

"Agreed." Wyatt says.

"Alright. So tell us everything, Colt. This is all so confusing!" I beg.

"My dad, Richard, was in prison when I was born. My- I mean our- mum, Nadine, was already married to Emilio, your father, by then. Your father had Wyatt with his ex. I think we were born around the same time." He starts to spill it all out.

"When is your birthday?" Wyatt asks.

"22nd April." Colt says.

"Mine's on March 29th. I'm like a month older than you!" Wyatt giggles.

"Wyatt, let the guy talk." I say.

"Fine. Go on, please." He rolls his eyes.

"So I guess we were raised together and all until I 'died'." He continued.

"There was a fire. I'm guessing my dad started it so he could fake my death. Emilio managed to escape quickly with you. Nadine searched for me everywhere but couldn't find me anywhere because Richard had already taken me. Eventually, the firemen brought her outside. The whole house burnt down. They assumed I was dead." He says, without any emotion.

"Holy shit." Wyatt gasps. I don't say anything. I just stare at Colt in shock.

"Basically, Richard kidnapped me. He took me to London and raised me alone. I was there until last year when I found out everything." He adds.

"Wow." I manage to say.

"Believe me now?" He asks.

"Yes." I croak.

"Where's Richard now?" Wyatt asks.

"Prison. Where he belongs." Colt replies.

"And my biological mom? You know anything about her?" Wyatt asks, looking hopeful.

"Sorry mate, can't help you there. I know nothing about her." Colt says with an apologetic smile.

"Oh. Okay." Wyatt looks disappointed.

"Why is Richard in prison? Did you turn him in?" I ask.

"Nope. He's in for fraud and embezzlement. He told me all of this when he'd just gotten locked up. Guilt, I guess." Colt informs us.

"Why was he in prison earlier?" I ask.

"For the same thing. Guess he doesn't learn from his mistakes."

"Damn." I raise my eyebrows.

After this night, Colt and I start hanging out a lot. We get to know each other better and get along pretty well when he isn't being all broody and annoying. And even though Wyatt won't admit it, he's warming up to Colt too. Colt has even started attending more classes! I want to tell Macey about everything. After all, Colt is related to her too. I'm still a little suspicious of her though. Besides, I should definitely tell my parents before telling her.

I keep dodging my parents' calls the whole week. I'm just not ready to talk to them. I know that we need to tell my parents about Colt. I really do. We just need a little time to adjust first. We'll do it eventually.

But nothing prepares me for what happens next.
