[10] The Aftermath Of A Disastrous Night

I step out of Lindsey's car and tell the girls I'll see them later. I wait for them to get out of sight so I can take off the hideous fedora, but Lindsey decides to strike up a conversation with one one of the teachers standing nearby.

"Nice fedora, Kathryn. Wanna grow a neck beard to go with it?" Ashleigh snickers, walking past me. A set of blonde twins giggle along with her. It's honestly kind of funny. I'd laugh it was directed to someone other than me.

Screw this. I walk up to Lindsey, take of the fedora, and hand it to her. "Thanks, but no thanks." I say and walk away.

I make my way to English Lit and sit right at the back of the class. Hopefully no one will catch me sleeping. Last night's sleep was just not enough.

My plans to sleep get interrupted by Chase who comes and sits next to me.

"Hey, Kat! Wow, you look nice. Never thought I'd see you wear pink." He says cheerfully.

"Hey, Chase. Yeah, me neither. It's a long story." I say. Today is the aftermath of a disastrous night. The kind of night that I never ever want to endure again.

"I saw you in Lindsey's Snapchat story last night. Aren't Lindsey and Madison just the sweetest?" He smiles.

"Yeah. They really are the sweetest." I say with a big grin, trying not to sound sarcastic.

"I'm really excited about tonight." He says, putting his hand over mine.

"Me too." I say, really meaning it.
I feel butterflies in my stomach. His hand is really big. I remember reading somewhere that a big hand means a big-

"What are you thinking about?" He interrupts my thoughts. Gosh, I'm such a perv!

"Oh, not much! Just how smart Iago actually is!" I say quickly without thinking.

"Iago? Like, the bird from Aladdin?" He looks confused.

"Um, no. From Othello. It's the play we're reading right now." I chuckle.

"Right! Of course."

We spend the rest of the class silently, paying attention.

The day goes by pretty quickly and neither Mr Greek God nor Alex are to be seen anywhere. I run into Madison in the hallway. "Madison, have you seen either Will or Alex today?" I ask her.

"Ew, no." She wrinkles her nose and walks away. Okay then.

"Hey Kat! Ready to go home?" Macey asks, walking up to me.

"Yeah, let's go!" I reply, excited to get out of this shithole.

"Did you have a good time last night?" Macey asks on our way back.

"Uh huh." I reply.

"You totally needed that mani-pedi." She claims.

"I liked my nails the way they were." I defend.

"Suit yourself." She pulls up in the driveway.

"You wanna come over? My mom's making lasagna." She offers. As much as I love lasagna, spending time with Aunt Augusta is just not worth it.

"No can do, Mace. I've got a ton of homework to catch up on," I start. "Gotta get it done now since we're gonna be out tonight."

"Oh right, me too. I'll see you tonight!" She waves and shuts the door.

I enter my house, sprawl myself on the couch, and spend the next hour watching Jeopardy. So much for all that homework.

I hear the doorbell ring. Is Wyatt back early?

I open the door to see a middle aged woman and not my brother. Her golden locks flow over her shoulders. Her rapture blue eyes are just like her daughter's. For a woman so beautiful, Aunt Augusta sure is cruel. She looks a lot like my mom but is nothing like her.

My mom is kind. Aunt Augusta is anything but. For some reason, Wyatt and I are the only ones who seem to notice that.

"Aunt Augusta. You're back!" I smile.

"Fedora, I presume that you're done with your homework?" She barks.

"No, not yet." I say quietly.

"Why is your TV on then?" She questions.

"I just wanted to relax a bit before getting started on my homework." I defend myself.

"I knew your parents were wrong when they said that you're mature enough to be on your own." She grumbles.

"I'm not on my own. I have Wyatt." I state.

"Wyatt may be an adult legally, but that boy behaves like a child."

"Aunt Augusta, don't worry. We're fine!" I say as nicely as I can.

"I should get back to my homework but thanks for dropping by!" I smile.
