Chapter 4
The Woods & Lake
A Lana Del Rey song begins to play on the radio in Justin's Honda, so I reach my short arm out and turn up the volume of the radio to medium. I him the lyrics successfully and perfectly to myself, knowing the lyrics by heart. Justin laughs and I stop humming and turn to face him. "Why are you laughing at?" I ask, curiously. "At her voice. It sounds like a broken record." He says, laughing and smiling. I gasp loudly and dramatically, and say, "Don't ever say that. Lana is the best."
I say, in defense. "Yea, the best at being the worst." Justin laughs. "Whatever." I say, smiling. After a few minutes of driving, We come to a stop by the woods.
"What are we doing here?" I ask, curiously. "At the woods. It's my favorite place come on. Come with me, Mel." Justin says. I open the car door and jump out landing on my feet. Justin jumps out and we walk slowly into the woods side by side together. "So, tell me about yourself, Justin." I say, sounding curious. "Well, I was born in Canada but, my parents moved us to the United States when was 7. I grew up very poor and we had to sell our clothes and even our house just to get money." Justin says.
Justin goes on to tell me how he was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder at four, he had a drinking problem and started drinking when he was 14 after his dad and mom had died in a car crash, how he found interest in singing, playing the guitar, reading, dancing and playing basketball. How he won many championships for his basketball team in high school. And how he got so many tattoos.
We finally reach a large wide lake full of water and I turn around beside me to find Justin taking off his shirt and taking off his jeans quickly. "What are you doing, Justin?" I ask. "We are going to take a swim in the lake." He says, throwing his clothes to the side and leaving him in his white tight Calvin Klein underwear. His washboard abs and slew of tattoos are on full display.
"We!" I say, sounding worried and whiny. Mel, you gotta live a little you can't always follow the rules and be a good girl forever, take a risk, take a chance, I tell myself. "Yes, we come on in Mel." He says. "Okay, I will." I say, happily. I undress out of my clothes and throw them to the side, leaving myself in my black lace bra and panties in the cold and chilly air. "It's so cold, Justin." I say, shivering at the feeling of the cold and chilly air.
"Then, jump in, Mel like this" Justin says, and in his Calvin's, he runs toward the lake and jump in like a cannonball. That looks fun, I think to myself. I smile, take a deep breathe, and run toward the lake and jump in fast. The water is a mixture of warm and cold, and then I'm splashed by some water. "Water fight!" Justin excitedly declares, and begins to splash me and I splash him back. After an hour of splashing each other, laughing, and playing a fun game of Marco Polo, we just roam through the lake together.
Night has come upon us, the moon is shaped like a banana, and the stars flood the dark sky. "We should go, it's getting darker and darker, Justin." I say, quickly and begin to get out of the lake. "Your right, let's go, Mel." He says. "That was actually fun." I admit quickly. "Really?" Justin asks. "Yes, actually." I say, happily. Justin let's me dry off with his shirt and he and I get dress quickly.
"Where do you want to go?" He asks, as I and Justin walk out of the woods and over into his car, jumping in. "To my dorm, the night is still young, let's watch a movie." I say, happily. He nods, and smiles happily. And, we drove off into the night down the road back to Wisconsin State University.
