Chapter 36

Claire's House & Confessions

I walk upstairs of Claire's house towards the front door behind Claire.
She knocks on the door softly and innocently. Helen opens the door wide and greets us with a bright smile. Helen has shiny blonde hair and bright blue eyes, she could pass for Claire's twin rather a mother.

"Hello, Claire and Melissa, come on Claire said you were coming by to help bake cookies with me." Helen beams, cheerfully. "Yes. Yes I am. I love baking." I say, happily.

"Well, come in in." Helen says, excitedly, opening the door wide open for us to go in. We pass Helen and we walk into the kitchen with Helen behind of us.

Different and unique flavors of cookie dough fill the kitchen counters along with some cookie cutters, sliver pans, and cooking sheets.

"Hey, Mel. I didn't know you were here." A familiar smooth and lovable voice says behind me. I turn around slowly to find Justin walking into the kitchen with John behind him.

Justin is dressed in his basketball WSU Jersey and shorts and shoes. A light blue soft sweatband is on his forehead. Sweat drips slowly from his forehead and neck.

"Hey, yes I'm here. I came to help your mom bake cookies." I explain, excitedly. "No, let's go hang out. Now." He demands. "No, I'm staying here to bake." I say, calmly, trying not to cause a scene and yell at him. "Whatever." He groans, madly and walks out of the kitchen and upstairs.

"I'll go talk to him, Mel." Claire assures me, and sprints out of the kitchen and then upstairs. "Shall we get started?" Helen, asks with bright smile. "Yes, we shall." I answer, giggling.

I grab a white thin and long cooking sheet and a sliver pan. What cookie dough should I pick?, I ask myself. There are sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and many more. I decide on sugar cookies since I loved them since I was little girl.

I open the can of dough and after I pat them down in medium sized circles I lye them on the cooking sheet. I grab the cookie cutters and I cut the cookies into hearts.

I stick them in the oven and so does Helen, putting her chocolate chip cookies on top in the oven. "While they bake, let's go watch some TV." Helen suggests. "Ok." I reply, happily.

I and Helen laugh loudly at the jokes of Golden Girls and it makes forget that I am with Helen not a friend and I'm at a house, not a dorm. "Your good for him you know." Helen says, out of the blue with a small smile.

"For who?" I ask, innocently batting my eyelashes and playing stupid like I don't know who she is talking about. "Our son, Justin. Between basketball and his college school, you have kept him sane. He used to have an acholic problem and it all start--" Helen begins to say but, it interrupted by me quickly.

"When his parents died in that car wreck together." I say, sadly, lowering my head down. "He told you?" She asks, curiously with shock on her straight face. "Yes. Yes he did." I say, quietly, fearing that Justin is near and us listening to our private conversation.

After one hour of watching The Golden Girls, the buzzer for the cookies goes off loudly with an annoying sound. We walk fast towards the kitchen and when we walk in, sweetness fills airwaves and I smile at the smell of the fresh baked cookies.

We grab two pairs of green warm and comfy oven mitts and open the oven, grabbing our pans with our cookies in it.

We sit them on the kitchen counter and we grab two glass plates to put the cookies in them and serve them.

I put the heart shaped sugar cookies in a glass plate for Justin, Claire, and I. "I'll right back, I'm going to give these to Justin and Claire so we can share them altogether." I explain, happily.

"Ok, dear." Helen chirps. I walk out if the kitchen and sprint upstairs towards Justin's bedroom. But, two voices in a private conversation stops me in my tracks, having me stand in the upstairs hallway.

"Justin, when are you going to tell Mel that you have done with millions of other girls." Claire says, quietly. "I don't want to. Do you know how fragile and emotional-damaged she is?" He asks, quietly. Fragile? Emotionally-damaged?, I think to myself. How could Justin say that about me?, I ask myself. A large lump fills develops in my throat and it feels like a hard to swallow pill.

"Your right. You picked the wrong girl. She probably has feelings for you already" She says. Claire's right, I do have feelings for Justin but I am hiding them and locking them up tight, throwing the key away.

"I know I picked the wrong girl but, what's going on between us pretty soon will be done. I can get more girls." Justin says, cockily.

Wrong girl? Done?, I think to myself.
Tears flood my eyes and begins to slide down my cheeks slowly. My lungs are dry and I can feel myself about to faint. I drop the glass bowl of cookies on the upstairs wooden floor dramatically and watch it shatter into millions of little pieces. The shatter glass bowl represents how Justin just shattered my heart and entire life.

As as I hear and see Justin's bedroom door fly open, I sprint downstairs and
open the front door, running down the steps and over to my car. I hear Justin shouting, screaming, and yelling but, I just ignore him.

"Mel, I didn't mean that please come back baby!!!" He shouts, tears fall down his cheeks and his eyes are cold.
I ignore him and I jump into my car, trying to start it up.

Justin runs over to the car and begins to band endlessly and uncontrollably on my car windows. "Open the fucking car door now!!" He shouts.

He made a fool out of me, thinking we were going to be more than friends, start dating, get married, have children, and ride off into the sunset, living happily ever after. But, I thought wrong, I should've known what he was going to put me through when I signed that contract.

I feel stupid and played like an XBOX, I feel betrayed by Claire, she knew a along, she knew Justin has did this with millions of other girls in the past and she knew it everything, she stood like there and watched me sink like a cannonball.

I drive off speeding down the streets of downtown Wisconsin back to Wisconsin State University crying my eyes out and swallowing the lump in throat. I am starting to regret everything. This time, I have leaving and going away, and I will never look back. Never again.
