Chapter 1
First Day Of College
We finally arrive at the shiny black iron gates of Wisconsin State University. The shiny black iron gates of Wisconsin State University open slowly and once they open fully, my parent's dark green minivan drives in. As we drive in, I stare at the window, my chocolate dark brown eyes glued to the outside. Colorful leaves fall off of the tiny branches from the tall oak and maple trees and onto the well trimmed grass campus.
People walk around the well trimmed grass campus, sit on light brown benches talking, and hanging around the tall oak and maple trees laughing and smiling. Squirrels scatter across the campus and up the tall oak and maple trees. Black big and scary crows are perched on top of the shiny black iron gates of Wisconsin State University. Wisconsin is so beautiful in the fall during September, I thought to myself.
My mom finds a parking spot in the parking lot of Wisconsin State University. My mom cuts off the engine, snatch out the car keys, and stash them in her dark blue blue jeans back pocket and turns to face me slowly. Tears fall slowly from my mom's hazel brown eyes and onto her soft rosy red cheeks and a warm smile is plastered across her beautiful face. "Mom, don't cry or I'm going to cry too." I say, laughing a little bit and smiling from ear to ear. I reach out my short arm to wipe away her cold tear and she laughs. "Honey, Mel, these are happy tears that I am crying. I'm happy that my beautiful daughter is going to college. The same college I went to and met your father." Mom says, smiling and crying happily.
I nod and smile, my mom reaches with her long arms out to pull me in for a warm hug. I blink back my cold tears successfully and smile warmly.
I'm gonna miss everything, my four sisters, my bedroom, my small town Creekside Falls, and my parents. I'm gonna miss it all, I thought to myself.
My 18 years of life quickly flashes before my eyes: The birth of me on September 22, my first word, getting potty trained, my first day of kindergarten, my first day of elementary school, graduating from middle school, and graduating high school first in my class. Now, I'm in college, studying literature, art, and music.
"Ok, let's stop all of this crying and hugging. Let's get your luggages from the back, dear." Mom says, excitedly and laughing a little bit. I laugh too and open the passenger door, jumping out of my parent's dark green minivan. I jump out of my parent's dark green minivan and onto the rocky pavement of the dark blue concrete. The air is windy, crispy, chilly, and cold and the sky is cloudless blue with a flock of birds flying. I shiver at the feeling of the cold, chilly, crispy, and windy air and Goosebumps slowly form all over me one by one. I cross my hands over my chest slowly. "Dear, Mel come and help your mom, honey." Mom says.
"Okay." I say, walking over to the back of my parent's dark green minivan quickly.
My mom hands me two of my dark crimson red wheeled luggages and stand them side by side on the rocky pavement of the dark blue concrete.
I and my Mon stand a few inches away from each other. I reach out my short arm to pull my mom in for a warm hug. This time, I don't blink back my cold tears, I let them go, my cold tears fall from my chocolate dark brown eyes onto my soft bright pink cheeks. "I'm gonna miss you, Mom." I say, sadly. My voice sounds cracked, sad, and broken like a broken record so I clear my throat quickly and say it again, "I'm gonna miss you, Mom." "I'm gonna miss you, too honey." Mom says, sadly.
We pull away, we pull out of the warm hug and stand a few inches away from each other. My mom reaches out her long arm to wipe away my cold tears and I laugh a little and start to smiling uncontrollably. "Now, Mel do you know where to go?" Mom asks, curiously with concern. "Yes. The Admission & Office building." I say, happily. Wisconsin State University has five buildings: The Dorms, The Classes, The Cafe, The Study Hall & Library, and The Gym.
"That's right, the Admission & Office building. Don't forget to email me and visit us, your family. Don't forget to get a car, too." Mom says. I nod and say, "Okay, mom I love you. Goodbye." "I love you, too. Goodbye honey." Mom says, smiling. My mom jumps into my parent's dark green minivan quickly and cuts in the engine, ready to drive off. I wave goodbye and she waves back then she's gone, sprinting down the streets of downtown Wisconsin.
I grab my two wheeled dark crimson red luggages and begin to walk on the well trimmed grass campus towards the Admission & Office building. I grab ahold of the black handles on the glass doors of the Admission & Office building and take a deep breathe before I walk in.
A dark navy blue arrow on the white wall points to a office with glass doors in the hallway. With my two wheeled dark crimson red luggages in my hand and my heart beating faster than it should, I follow the dark navy blue arrow, as a guide, towards the office. I open the glass doors of the office and walk in confidently. In the office, There is two chairs close by the glass doors and a plum redhead lady behind a light brown desk with vanilla colored folders and other paperwork in her hands. I walk over to where plum redhead lady is, leaving my two wheeled crimson dark red luggages standing up by the two chairs perfectly.
"Hello, I'm Miss Tyler, how can I help you young lady?" Ms. Tyler asks, politely with curiosity and concern in her soft voice. "I'm Melissa Blair Brown. I'm a new college student. It's my first day." I say, nervously. "Your Brenda's second oldest daughter. The one who graduated first in her class." Ms. Tyler says, excitedly. "Yes. Yes I am." I say, proudly.
Ms. Tyler nods slowly and begins to look through a vanilla folder slowly, grabbing out two sheets of paper and a golden key. "This is your dorm number, class schedule, and dorm key. The Dorms are on the other side of this building. Have a good first day, Miss Brown." Ms. Tyler says,
I nod slowly and force a smile, walk away from Ms. Tyler and her light brown desk and back over to where my two wheeled dark crimson red luggages stood by the two chairs close to the glass doors of the office. I stash my golden dorm key in my light blue jeans back pocket and I grab ahold of my luggages open the glass door and walk out.
The air outside is still windy, cold, crispy, and chilly, the wind blows through my long and beautiful dark brown chestnut hair. I walk towards The Dorms slowly and steady with my luggages. I look around the well trimmed grass campus to find people throwing a football back and forth to each other, walking around, sitting on the light brown benches, and talking.
I open the glass doors of The Dorms and walk in quickly.
The hallway of The Dorms is quiet, creepy, and abandoned. I begin to walk with my head down, with my chocolate dark brown eyes glued to my class schedule here at Wisconsin State University:
Literature/English : Ms. Brownfield
Art/Visual Arts: Mr. Robinson
Music/Musician: Mrs. Mavens
Journalism/Writing: Ms. Martin
I bumped into someone really hard and as my papers went up flying in the airwaves, I fell down on my butt on the hallway floor. Gravity pulls papers down they fall onto the hallway floor and two luggages stand perfectly. "I'm so sorry, I didn't see you." A smooth, gentle, and manly voice apologizes, the voice sounds like caramel and dark chocolate. "No it's okay, It was me. I'm sorry." I apologize, quickly and happily. I sit up on my small knees and begin to pick up my papers slowly. The guy with the smooth voice helps me pick up my papers. We, at the same time with our hands, both reach for the last paper on the hallway floor and our fingers and hands touch slowly, sending a sweet electricity through my fragile yet curvy body. My soft cheeks heat up like inferno and turn a combination of red and pink. The same sweet electricity has swept through the guy's strong and muscular body just as it did with mine because his soft cheeks are flushing a mixture of red and pink, seeming embarrassed. A warm smile is plastered across his hands one face.
A basketball rolls slowly pass my foot and go after it, grabbing it.
I and the guy stands inches away from each other face to face, I hold a basketball and the guy holds my papers. "I'm Justin Bieber." He says, smiling and holding out his large hand. "I'm Melissa Brown. But, Everyone calls me Mel B." I say, nicely shaking his hand politely and slowly.
His eyes are dark brown, his nose is narrow, his lips are small and naturally bright pink, his skin is pale, and his hair is a mixture of dirty and platinum blonde. He has a long sleeve of tattoos on his left and right long arms. He is wearing a dark navy blue, white, and jet black navy WSU basketball jersey with a badger on the front and the number 6 on the back, dark navy blue, white, and jet black basketball shorts, white ankle socks, and a pair of jet black Jordans.
"Here you go, Mel B." Justin says, nicely and smiles warmly, handing me my papers slowly. "Thanks, Justin." I say, smiling and grabbing my papers politely. "This must be yours?" I ask, curiously with a wicked cool smile on my beautiful face. "Yes. Yes it is." Justin says, smiling and laughing a little bit. "So you are a basketball player?" I ask. "A college basketball player. I'm the team captain and star basketball player. My dad is the coach." Justin says.
I nod and smile brightly, twirling my fingers with the tips of my long and beautiful dark brown chestnut hair. "Well, I have to go. I have to go practice for tonight's game in The Gym. I hope to see you there. Bye, Mel B." Justin says, smiling and walking past me towards the glass doors of The Dorms. "Goodbye, Justin. It was nice meeting you." I say, happily and waving friendly goodbye. "It was nice meeting you, too. Goodbye" Justin says, waving back. He opens the glass doors of The Dorms and walk outside on campus. His gone.
Who was that?, I think to myself. I take a long look at my piece of paper with my dorm number information:
Dorm Number: 441
I fold my two pieces of paper and stash them into my blue jeans back pocket quickly. I grab ahold of the black handles on my two wheeled luggages and begin to slowly walk down the abandoned, quite hallways of The Dorms. I finally found the dorm 441 and take a deep breathe, then I open the dorm door.
A small girl with long and flawless dark brown hair pulled into a ballerina bun, high cheekbones, thick-framed glasses, a warm smile, huge dimples, dark brown eyes, and pale skin sitting on a small bed with a burrito and cup of Starbucks coffee in her hand. The small girl wears a black crop top with the words: Fries Before Guys on it in white letters, dark blue jean denim shorts, a red flannel plaid shirt is wrapped around her small waist, black tights, and a pair of black Converse. Beside her, sits a small girl with long blonde hair pulled into a simple ponytail with a dark blue ribbon, pale skin, bright smile, light blue eyes, and a narrow nose. She is wearing a WSU dark navy blue, white, and jet black cheerleading uniform with long white sleeve, white ankle socks, and a pair of white plain tennis shoes. A dark blue shiny star has been painting on her lovely face.
The two girls take a look at me with warm smiles and I smile back. The blonde girl jumps up off the small bed excitedly and runs over to quickly with a bright smile plastered across her lovely face. "Hello, I'm Caitlin Jacobs. You must be my new roommate." Caitlin says, excitedly and holding her hand out for me to shake it. I shake her hand quickly and say, "Hey, I'm Melissa Brown. But, you can call me Mel Be. I am your new roommate." She nods, and smiles. Great, my roommate is an energized, perky, nice, caring , and weird cheerleader for WSU's college basketball team, I think to myself.
"Your both of my roommates?" I ask, nervously biting my lower naturally bright pink lip. "Oh no, this is my best friend Bailey Johnson." Caitlin says, happily. "I'm Bailey. I live down the hall of The Dorms." Bailey says, flat toned. The dorm smells beautiful and lovely like flowers. On Caitlin's side of the room dorm, lyes a small bed with a white sheet, flora flower garden cover, and two black blankets, a wall with wallpapers of cute puppies and little kittens, a small refrigerator, a microwave, and a nightstand. Her pair of shoes are in a hamper along with her clothes close to her nightstand.
A 50-inch TV screen sits on a long light brown table with a DVD, a remote, and a couple movies like Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridesmaids, 27 Dresses, Dirty Dancing, The Notebook, and A Walk To Remember.
On my side of the room dorm, lyes a small bed and a nightstand. I really should go shopping for some college supplies this weekend, I think to myself.
I unzip my first luggage, opening my first of the two luggages and grab out my panties and bras, fold them neatly, and stash them into my nightstand. I grab my clothes and stash them into the bottom of my nightstand after I fold them neatly and perfectly. I unzip my second of two luggages and grab out my picture frames of my family and friends back home in Creekside Falls and sit them on my nightstand perfectly, all of four of my picture frames.
I grab my old and white iPod full of Lana Del Rey music, sitting it on my nightstand right next to my four picture frames.
I see a tall dark brown wooden bookshelf close to the dorm room door and take a look at my Jane Austen collection of novels. "Do you mind if I stack my novels on that bookshelf?" I ask, nicely and politely and pointing towards the bookshelf by the dorm room door. "I don't care. I don't use it because I don't like to read." Caitlin says. I nod slowly and flash a bright smile, and get up with my Jane Austen novels of Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Sense & Sensibility, and Northanger Abbey, walking over to the bookshelf and my other books like The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, and every single Nicholas Sparks book.
I walk back over to my second luggage, and grab my Apple laptop and sliding it under my small bed. I get out my collection of Lana Del Rey CDs including Born To Die to Honeymoon and sit them on my nightstand. I grab my bathroom necessities and slide them under my bed. After I get done unpacking, I grab Pride & Prejudice and curl up in my bed and start re-reading it over for the 40th time. "Hey, Mel B, have gotten a tour of Wisconsin State University?" Bailey asks. "Nope." I say, quickly. Caitlin jumps off her bed and runs over to me, grabbing my arm and pulling me off my bed. "Come with us, were gonna give you a tour."
Bailey says, smiling a bit.
Side by side, I, Bailey, and Caitlin walk in the quiet, creepy hallway of The Dorms towards the glass doors. Caitlin opens up the glass doors and a gush of wind blows up back inside. Outside, it is cold and windy, a cold chill runs down my back and Goosebumps begin to form everywhere quickly. We walk onto the sidewalk, with Caitlin and Bailey pointing at stuff and things. The campus is empty expect the crows that are perched on top of the shiny black iron gates of Wisconsin State University.
Bailey points beyond the campus and gates of Wisconsin State University towards down the streets and says, "Down the street are the frat houses. The frat boys party all day and all night and most of them are womanizers, jerks, and alcoholic's." I laugh a little bit and smile warmly. I could never see myself at a frat house party, I think to myself.
We reach The Study Hall & Library building and open the glass doors, walking inside. Inside of The Study Hall & Library, lyes a large library full of books, tables, desks, and a skinny lady walking around the library with glasses reading The Great Gatsby. It is so quiet that you could hear a pen drop. We walk over towards a guy sitting down at a table wearing thick-frammed glasses with a black lip ring reading Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix. "Brandon!" Bailey exclaims, loudly. The skinny lady with the glasses and The Great Gatsby book says, "Shss!" To Bailey. Bailey mutters, "Whatever, bitch."
"Hey, Bailey." Brandon whisper-shouts, sitting down The Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix book down and walking over to us. Brandon has a black lip ring, dark brown eyes, pale skin, a warm smile, a narrow nose, naturally light pink lips, and wavy light brown hair. Brandon is wearing a dark green beanie, a plain white T-shirt, a red, black, and white plaid shirt, black skinny jeans, a chunky and creative necklace and a pair of black Vans. A slew of tattoos cover up Brandon's long neck and since his sleeves of his plaid shirt is rolled up, his sleeve of tattoos are on full display.
"Hey, Brandon." Caitlin says, cheerfully quiet. "Hi, Caitlin." He says, nicely. Brandon turns slowly and looks at me with a warm smile and I quickly turn away. "Who is she?" Brandon asks, curiously. "This is Caitlin's new roommate, Melissa Brown. But, she likes to be called Mel B." Bailey says, happily flat toned.
"I'm Brandon Walsh. It's nice to meet you, Mel B." Brandon says, nicely and smiling a little bit. "It's nice to meet you, too Brandon." I say. We all take a seat down at the table together, Bailey sits across from me beside Brandon and Caitlin sits beside me. "Is this where you hang?" I ask, curiously. "Yea, sometimes. I come here because I love how quiet it is and I like to read." Brandon says. I nod and smile and say, "What are you majoring in?" I ask, curiously. "I do photography for the newspaper here at Wisconsin State University. But, I'm majoring in literature." He says.
"I'm majoring in Literature, Art, Writing, and music." I say, proudly with a wide smile plastered across mg beautiful face. "That's amazing. Your multi-talented." He says. Bailey digs into her denim jean short pockets and grab our her iPhone 6S, checking the time.
"We have to go and get ready for tonight's basketball game in The Gym." Bailey says, panicking. Bailey grabs my small wrist and pulls me up, and Caitlin gets up, too. As we begin to walk out of The Study Hall & Library building library towards the glass doors, I waved goodbye to Brandon and he waved goodbye back with a warm smile on his handsome baby face.
