“Dinner and awaiting a surprise”

Lilith was trying to pick out a costume for Halloween. But, she couldn't find anything that she really liked. She had dragged Selena along with her, while she looked for something. “How about this?” Selena asked as they held up a red ghostface mask. “Nope. I went as ghostface two years ago.” Lilith says. Selena sets the mask down back in its place. “I could just ask my Sensei if you can borrow a gi.” Selena suggests.

“I went as a karate student when I was seven.” Lilith responds. Selena groans in frustration. “You've gone as everything. How do you expect to find a costume, if you're not willing to repeat one.” they say. “I'll find something.” Lilith says, waving them off.  “Go as a shower. Or any inanimate object.” Selena says. “No thank you.” Lilith snorts. Selena holds their hands up in a strangling motion towards Lilith, as soon as she turns around.

“A cheerleader?” Selena asks. “I'm a part of the cheer team. And besides I heard that the annoying ass bullies, aka Yasmine, Samantha, Moon, and Alicia are going as Laker girls. So, absolutely not.” Lilith explains. “Nancy Wheeler?” Selena suggests. “That one I haven't done, so maybe. What are you going as?” Lilith asks. “Wednesday Adams. I already have the clothes for it. So it should be pretty easy.” Selena says.

“That's gonna be a good costume.” Lilith says. “Thank you.” Selena smiles. They keep looking for a costume, until it's closing time. Lilith sighs in frustration, as she walks out of the store, without a costume. “Maybe we can make you something, if you don't find anything tomorrow?” Selena asks. Lilith nods in agreement. “Okay, now let's go and watch movies at my house.” Lilith says. “Is there gonna be food?" Selena asks. “Mhm. Snacks and whatever my mom made for dinner.” Lilith responds. “Okay, let's hurry up then. I'm starving.” Selena says as they rush to the car. Lilith, joining them soon after.

Alexandra had made spaghetti for dinner. She was waiting for the two to get home. She set out three plates, almost four. Before she remembered that her husband wasn't there anymore. She tried to ignore the pang in her heart as she realized this. He had been dead for several years now, and she would still make the mistake of setting out his plate. The first time she had done it she had broken down sobbing.

Whenever Lilith caught her setting out the plate, she would silently put it away. And the rest of dinner would be quiet. Only clipped answers, and short questions were given. Tyler's death had been hard on both of them. Everyday they would remember him. Whether it be by seeing a picture of him, watching his favorite movies, or eating his favorite food. He was always on their minds.

Lilith was parking in their driveway. “Here we are.” She said getting out of her car. Selena stared in awe. The house was beautiful. It was a two story house, painted white. And the trim was red. They had a pretty big front porch, and the grass was freshly cut. The path to the front door had a garden on the side. Pink and red flowers filled the garden. Lilith opened the door for Selena. After they walked in, Selena just stood there awkwardly.

“Come on. Dinner's probably ready.” Lilith says, leading her friend into the dining room. Alexandra was looking for something in the fridge. Lilith went up to her, and tried to see what she was looking for. “What are you looking for?” She asked curiously. “The lemonade that i made earlier.” Alexandra responds simply. “Hello Selena. You two can go ahead and sit down. Dinner's ready.” Alexandra says after a pause.

“Thank you for having me, Mrs. Young.” Selena thanked. “Call me Alexandra. And its a pleasure. Lilith hasn't brought any friends besides Demetri and Eli in some time. It's nice seeing a new face around.” Alexandra says, walking to the table with the lemonade pitcher in hand.

Selena laughed at her comment.“Don't expose me mom.” Lilith said with a faux pout on her face. Alexandra waved her off. “I'm only telling the truth.” She responds. “I hope you like spaghetti.” the older Alexandra woman says, while looking at Selena. “I love spaghetti.” Selena says sincerely. “Good.” Alexandra says.

The rest of dinner is filled with laughter as Alexandra tells stories about her childhood. “And then she turned around. And who was there? The guy that she'd been ranting about.” Alexandra says. “No!" Lilith says between laughs. “What did he say? Did he hear everything?” Selena asks. “He heard everything. My friend was mortified. I just laughed the whole time.” Alexandra answers.

“What happened to the guitar?” Lilith asks. My friend destroyed it. Thinking that it was his.” Alexandra says. “The poor guitar.” Selena says, shaking her head. “Do you play an instrument?” Alexandra asks. “Yeah, I play the drums.” Selena says. “One of my friends used to play the drums.” Alexandra says. “Really?" Selena asks. “Mhm. He played them for seven years, I think.” Alexandra answers.

“I've been playing them for three years now.” Selena says. “You should teach me sometime." Lilith says. “Of course, just let me know when.” Selena says with a smile.

After dinner the two friends went to Lilith's bedroom. “What movie do you want to watch?” Lilith asks. “Hocus Pocus?” Selena suggests. Lilith nods in agreement. After starting the movie, both of them lay comfortably on Lilith's bed. Eventually falling asleep. Lilith's phone went off several times throughout the night. She didn't hear it, since it was on silent. But, she had a big surprise waiting for her the next morning. And not a good one, at that.
