26.
The next morning Sawyer woke up earlier than she usually did for school. She took a nice long shower, and she spent a lot more time on her skin care and hair.
Sawyer decided to wear her curls down. The wet look. She lathered them in eco gel and shea moister. She put just enough concealer on her under eyes to cover the bags, and she put three different mascaras on her lashes. Lastly she applied her lipgloss and got up from her vanity.
Sawyer walked to her mirror one last time looking at herself. This time she smiled. She finally liked how she looked.
She had on a black mini skirt with a black long sleeved crop top to go with it. She had on small gold hoop earrings along with her gold double cross necklace. For shoes she wore her black slip on ugg slippers with low cut white socks.
Sawyer grabbed her bag and slipped her phone inside. She left her room and went to the kitchen opening the fridge. She was starving. Her stomach was growling and she quickly snapped her head, looking at Gia.
Gia was seated at the table eating a bowl of cereal. She let out a light chuckle, "Your body is telling you that you need to eat. Before you die." She joked.
"And what does it look like I'm doing." Sawyer rolled her eyes. She grabbed out the left over dinner from the night before and heated it up in the microwave.
Once it beeped she brought it to the table and sat across from Gia.
"Has your first year of high school been everything you thought it would be?" Sawyer asked.
Gia brought her eyes up from her phone, "I mean yes. But no? It's been a lot I guess. Definitely different than middle school."
"I'm sure it was definitely a culture shock." Sawyer laughed, "unfortunately it only gets worse from here."
"That makes me feel so much better." Gia sarcastically spoke.
Sawyer just chuckled and finished up eating her food. She felt a buzz in her bag.
"Are you ready?" Sawyer asked.
"Yeah." Gia stood up. She grabbed her bowl and sawyers plate, and took them to the sink.
The two girls made their way to Ashtrays car.
Ashtray gave sawyer a warm smile. He watched her closely as she happily buckled herself. She seemed different. There was a light to her that he didn't realize he missed.
"You look good." He lightly raised an eyebrow.
"So do you." She smiled. She leaned in a planted a kiss on his lips.
Gia audibly groaned from the back seat.
Sawyer looked back at her giving her an eye roll.
Ashtray started the car and began driving. There was music playing but no one was really paying attention to it.
"Can we make a pit stop at Starbucks?" Sawyer smirked.
Ashtray brought his eyes down to Sawyers. He noticed the look she had on her face. That smile. That damn smile he would always cave for no matter what.
Ashtray didn't respond he just continued driving. He eventually pulled into the Starbucks drive thru.
"I have no money." Sawyer couldn't hold back her giggles.
"You thought I'd let you pay even if you did?" Ashtray asked as if it was obvious to which Sawyers smile widened.
Sawyer stood beside Ashtray as they arrived to the weight room. She had her Java chip frappe in her hand. She watched as he sat down beside his gym bag.
"Why don't you go to a real gym?"
"Why would I pay for something when I can go for free?" Ashtray pulled his shirt over his head and lazily unzipped his bag, putting the shirt inside.
"What happened to the boxing?" Sawyer took a sip of her drink. She tried her hardest to refrain from looking at his abs.
"Life got in the way." Ashtray now stood up. He gave a lazy shrug.
"Oh." Sawyer nodded, "I think I'm going to do the thing today. I don't wanna wait any longer."
"Are you sure?" Ashtray asked.
"Yeah I'm sure. The longer I have it the more of a target I am." Sawyer quietly let out.
"Do you want me to come?" Ashtray zipped his bag up.
"No it's okay. She's my friend I'm not scared of her she won't be upset with me." Sawyer was sure of it.
"Okay. Keep me updated." Ashtray nodded understanding. He walked up to Sawyer.
She peered up into his eyes. He let out a smile that revealed the small dimple he had. That smile made Sawyer want to melt right then and there.
"You don't have to worry about me. I'm fine." Sawyer softly spoke.
"I know. You're tough." He chuckled.
Sawyer playfully rolled her eyes at him, "I'll see you at lunch." She raised her eyebrows.
Ashtray kissed her forehead.
Sawyer walked out and into the hallway. She was on the hunt, glancing around the crowded halls until she finally spotted her.
Sawyer quickly walked up to Maddy's locker.
Maddy hesitated but gave Sawyer a smile, "Hey, what's up?"
They hadn't really talked much since her birthday party. Sawyer apologized and Maddy forgave her. She wasn't mad at Sawyer at all. She was just torn between her cousin and one of her best friends.
"Hey.." Sawyer breathed out, "I, uh.. just wanted to return this. I'm sorry, I can't keep this any longer." She held her bag close to her chest. She pulled one of the sides so Maddy could see inside.
Maddy eyes were glued to the CD. She quickly pulled it out and placed it in her locker, slamming it shut.
Sawyer and Maddy looked into eachothers eyes but neither of them had anything to say.
Sawyer zipped her bag and just did what she knew best. She walked away.
Deep down she wanted to try to ease the tension with Maddy. But she knew now wasn't the right time, it wouldn't go far. She needed to wait this one out.
As Sawyer was walking away she couldn't help but notice Nate's cold hard stares never leave her while she walked down the hall. She glanced to her left once, seeing him leaned against a locker watching her. She quickly took her gaze off of of him and looked at the hall in front of her.
