xxxi. the truth circle

"Truth Circle. What is it you ask? Great question."

"Mae..."

"Shut it, Charlie, I'm teaching a lesson. The truth circle is a bonding experience. The immediate team sits in a circle before the game and we each tell each other something no one else knows. About fears, worries, or dreams. Not something stupid like who you have a crush on, but you can definitely tell me that cause I have a couple bets placed..."

"Mae..."

"Okay! Godric! You're almost as bad as McGonagall! What gets said in the truth circle never, EVER, leaves. Do you understand me? This is to help us get to know and trust each other more."

Tori was seated next to Angelina on the right of Mae. The entire quidditch team was seated in a huge circle as Mae had instructed. They could all hear the crowd outside shuffling in. It was the Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff match today, and Mae was helping them get ready.

"Charlie and I will start... Hi, My name is Mae. And I'm worried about failing potions right now. Professor Snape is really doing anything to get me to fail, but I refuse to let that happen... see? It's not that bad. Charlie, you go."

"Hi, my name is Charlie, and I'm very close to becoming a dragonologist, but if I do, I might have to drop quidditch. This is something I've always wanted to do, but I'm in it of a situation." Mae looked at Charlie, surprise written on her face. She said nothing, letting Oliver continue.

They went around the circle, Oliver saying that he really wants to win the Quidditch Cup this year, Fred and George about having to choose an elective for next year, Angelina said she was a bit worried about her parents not being able to make it to her games. Tori frowned, feeling a bit sad for her friend. When it was her turn she didn't know what to say.

She had a lot of things to be worried about, she just chose the first one that crossed her mind. "Uh, I guess I'm worried about getting hit in the head with a bludger..." she cracked a weak smile, smoothing over the tension. There were only a few chuckles and a few smiles.

Charlie rose first, "That was good, now we feel a bit more connected. Come on, we need to get to the match." He grabbed his broom, not giving a pep talk this time. Tori rose next, followed by the rest of the team getting ready.

Tori let out a deep breath, remembering the plays they had learned over the past two weeks. She formed in line as the team made their way to the quidditch pitch one by one. She could hear Lee's announcements before the riser had even risen.

"A very cloudy day definitely won't stop quidditch! Welcome everyone to the Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff match, the first one since our return from a holiday break. Here comes the Gryffindor team, looking fantastic as always. Don't worry girls, I've left all of my pick up lines in my other robe. Hufflepuff's looking good as well!"

Tori chuckled to herself. A game without a pickup line? This was going to be an odd one. She once again followed her team down to the centerline. Madam Hootch gave her the same old speech about playing fairly. Tori glanced up to see Cedric on his broom, he winked at her as Madam Hootch threw the quaffle in the air.

"And the quaffle is up! Hufflepuff chaser Haywood had taken it! Silvers is right on her tail, she's swooping in from above and TAKES IT OUT OF HAYWOOD'S HAND! GRYFFINDOR IS NOW IN POSSESSION! Silvers has passed it over to Johnson! A nice clean pass! Johnson is taking it upstream, moving in between the Hufflepuff chasers!

"Fred Weasley takes a nice clean shot at a bludger, keeping it away from Silvers! Yeah please be careful Tori! I don't want to have to take notes again for you!"

"Jordan!"

"Just kidding Professor! Foster has got the ball taking it down to the hoops! She shoots... AND SCORES! TEN POINTS TO GRYFFINDOR! Hufflepuff is now in possession! It seems they playing a good game of monkey in the middle with Johnson! Hufflepuff beater Jackson hits a bludger going straight towards Wood! He misses! The bludger headed straight for, FOSTER!"

Tori was in a neck and neck chase with Haywood over the quaffle when Lee announced that Mae was hit in the chest with a bludger. She turned, losing her focus about the quaffle to see Mae lying in the ground. There was a time out called, but Charlie commanded Tori and Angelina to stay on their brooms.

Mae was on the ground, clutching her rib cage as a stretcher came to retrieve her. Tori glanced at Angelina knowing what this meant. The reserves had to go in, and most likely that reserve was Morrison.

George was shaking his head, saying if only he had been a little bit closer he could have stopped it from happening. Tori looked at him with a sympathetic smile while Lee began to narrate again. "Seems like Foster has been rushed to the hospital wing, now Morrison is coming in for her and the game is back on!"

Tori watched Morrison come through the riser waving out to the crowd like they were there for him. It was ridiculous! Their best player was just wheeled away with most likely a broken rib and he just came in and act like these people were his fans?

Tori's blood began to boil as she thought about it. Morrison flew over to them, relining up with the Hufflepuff chasers. The quaffle was rethrown into the air and the game started once again.

"Morrison has possession of the quaffle, he's going through Haywood and Rellow! Silvers and Johnson seem to be open on either side. Morrison doesn't seem to want to share the quaffle though, he shoots and it is blocked by Hufflepuff's Keeper."

Tori sighed angrily. Morrison was refusing to pass and now they had just lost a chance at getting points. Rellow was in possession and was making her way towards Wood. Tori zoomed-in after her, nearly closing in when Morrison bumped into her broom trying to get it for himself.

"Does Morrison realize Silvers is on his team?" Lee wondered aloud. Professor McGonagall actually let that one go. "Hufflepuff scores, the score is twenty to ten. Hufflepuff has taken the lead."

"What are you doing?!" Tori shouted at Morrison. He just looked at her disgusted, zooming away. Tori gritted her teeth and was mainly like that for the rest of the game. Blood was pumping in her ears when she heard the score twenty minutes later. "Forty to twenty. Hufflepuff takes the lead! It seems like Morrison is back at it again, he's headed for the quaffle which is right where Diggory and Weasley are! Careful of a collision!! Oh, DIGGORY CATCHES THE SNITCH! HUFFLEPUFF WINS."

Tori rested her head into her hand as she landed. She felt so angry at Morrison. The team looked disappointed as they headed away. The Hufflepuff crowd screamed with excitement as their team celebrated.

"What the hell do you think you were accomplishing when you wouldn't pass to either of us?" Tori blew up at Morrison once they reached inside the tent. She wasn't sure she had ever been so mad before. "You lost us the game!"

"No, I was going to help us win. But you two." He gestured at both Tori and Angelina rudely, "Kept getting in my way."

"Getting in your way? Getting in your way?! There were so many opportunities to pass to either one of us so we could score, but no! You had to make this about you! You couldn't accept the fact that you weren't the center of attention so you basically lost us the game!" Tori dug her fingernails into her hand out of anger. Morrison only rolled his eyes.

"Tori, that's enough. We're all upset." Charlie told her, giving her an understanding look as she made her way back to her friends.

"If you're so concerned why don't you just go play for Slytherin? Besides, it's where you're supposed to be." Morrison mocked. Tori turned around, basically lunging at him. Fred and George grabbed hold of her before she could reach Morrison. They stopped her from jumping him by holding her down.

Tori struggled to get free as Angelina stepped in to help. Charlie yelled at Morrison that he needed to leave now and to expect not to come back to practices any time soon. Tori just wanted to slap him, just once. Charlie shoved him out of the tent while Tori was still in the grasp of her friends.

She had all this anger built up inside her, she just wanted to hit him. She felt like a volcano, about to erupt. She even started to cry frustrated tears. She just couldn't do this anymore, she didn't want to be treated like this. Tori collapsed in her friend's arms, her cries turning into sobs.

"Tori..." Angelina whispered, being the first to notice her cry. Tori tried to hide her face, she didn't want to cry. Not in front of her friends. It's was embarrassing to cry. That's what her father once told her. Don't let them see you cry. They'll think you're weak.

Even with that thought, she couldn't stop. She felt herself being pulled into someone's arms as she continued to sob. She felt two other people wrap their arms around her as well. She didn't know who's shoulder this was but she cried into it anyway.

Everything that had happened these past two years came flooding back. Everything had changed so fast she didn't really have much time to process it, or anytime to feel sad or angry about anything else. She never got to feel any anger for more than a minute at her parents or feel any sadness about the way people look at her. Tori didn't care if this was dramatic, for once she just didn't care.

She just wanted a good cry.

Tori stayed that way for a couple of minutes, trying to re-catch her breath. She had slowly pulled herself back together feeling a little bit empty. For once it was a good thing. She didn't open her eyes, embarrassed by what she might see. She was still leaning into someone's arms as she calmed herself down. She even heard quiet murmuring.

Tori opened her eyes slowly, looking around. She was surrounded by her friends, even Alicia and Lee were there. They all had their arms wrapped around once another and her. She felt like she was in a protected blanket. She glanced up to see Fred was the one holding her, and she felt slightly bad for making his shoulder soaking wet.

But she decided not to bring it up, since for once in a while, she felt truly safe, and at home.
