xciv. the dark mark
"Don't tell your mother you've been gambling," Arthur told the twins, who poured their winning money into a brown sack. Tori was still in shock on how they manage to guess the exact outcome that had happened. It wasn't like they took Divination. The group made there was slowly done the purple carpeted stairs.
"Don't worry, Dad," Fred said gleefully. "We've got big plans for this money. We don't want it confiscated."
Arthur looked for a moment that he wanted to ask what they meant, but decided against it. When they entered the tent they all began to recreate the match they had just watched. "Rubbish of Krum!" Ginny was shouting when Harry had re-enacted Lynch's dive. The twins were dancing, making some odd pitch noise to a tune. Tori joined in with their dance, spinning around.
"There's no one like Krum!" Ron shouted, standing above the group of teenagers. Fred and George glanced at each other and simultaneously began circling and waving their around like birds. Tori laughed, leaning against a countertop.
"He's like a bird the way he rides the wind. He's more than an athlete, he's an artist." Ron said, holding an Irish cape towards his chest. Ginny, who was standing next to Tori, giggled. "I think you're in love, Ron."
"Shut up."
Fred took to his knee, singing very off-key. "Viktor, I love you."
George took to the other side, "Viktor I dooooo,"
"When we're apart, my heart speaks only for you!" The rest of the tent joined in on teasing Ron until Arthur sent them to bed. Tori followed Ginny and Hermione into the other tent, wiping her face off with a rag. The girls changed into their pajamas before saying goodnight to each other.
Tori fell asleep, dreaming that she was once again at the top of that box. But something was different. The stadium was on fire, and she could hear screams, but they didn't sound happy. They sounded fearful.
"Girls! Up! Now! This is urgent!"
Tori sat up quickly and the top of her head hit the canvas. "S' matter?" She said groggily.
Dimly, she could tell that something was wrong. The noises in the campsite had changed. The singing had stopped. She could hear screams and the sound of people running. But they weren't in her dream. She slipped down from the bunk and reached for his clothes, but Arthur, who had pulled on his jeans over his own pajamas, said, "No time —just grab a jacket and get outside — quickly!"
Tori did as she was told, making sure Ginny and Hermione did as well. She clutched her wand in her hand, stepping outside the tent to see the horror around them.
By the light of the few fires that were still burning, she could see people running away into the woods, fleeing something that was moving across the field toward them, something that was emitting odd flashes of light and loud noises. Loud jeering, roars of laughter, and drunken yells were drifting toward them; then came a burst of strong green light, which illuminated the scene.
A crowd of wizards, tightly packed and moving together with wands pointing straight upward, was marching slowly across the field. Tori squinted at them... They didn't seem to have faces... Then she realized that their heads were hooded and their faces masked. They were death eaters! High above them, floating along in midair, four struggling figures were being contorted into grotesque shapes. It was as though the masked wizards on the ground were puppeteers, and the people above them were marionettes operated by invisible strings that rose from the wands into the air. Two of the figures were very small.
More wizards were joining the marching group, laughing and pointing up at the floating bodies. Tents crumpled and fell as the marching crowd swelled. Once or twice they saw one of the marchers blast a tent out of his way with his wand. Several caught fire. The screaming grew louder.
The floating people were suddenly illuminated as they passed over a burning tent and Tori recognized one of them: Mr. Roberts, the campsite manager. The other three looked as though they might be his wife and children. One of the marchers below flipped Mrs. Roberts upside down with his wand; her nightdress fell down to reveal voluminous drawers and she struggled to cover herself up as the crowd below her screeched and hooted with glee.
"I'm going to be sick," Tori muttered, watching the smallest Muggle child, who had begun to spin like a top, sixty feet above the ground, his head flopping limply from side to side. She grabbed onto Fred's shoulder to keep herself standing upright until she turned to see the fearful face of Hermione. Tori grabbed the girl by the arm, silently swearing to protect her.
At the same moment, Bill, Charlie, and Percy emerged from the boys' tent, fully dressed, with their sleeves rolled up and their wands out. "We're going to help the Ministry!" Arthur shouted over all the noise, rolling up his own sleeves. "You lot — get into the woods, and stick together. I'll come and fetch you when we've sorted this out!"
Bill, Charlie, and Percy were already sprinting away toward the oncoming marchers; Arthur tore after them. Ministry wizards were dashing from every direction toward the source of the trouble. The crowd beneath the Roberts family was coming ever closer.
"C'mon," said Fred, grabbing Ginny's hand and starting to pull her toward the woods. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Tori, and George followed. Tori was holding onto Fred's hand, glancing back in horror. The crowd beneath the Roberts family was larger than ever; they could see the Ministry wizards trying to get through it to the hooded wizards in the center, but they were having great difficulty. It looked as though they were scared to perform any spell that might make the Roberts family fall.
The colored lanterns that had lit the path to the stadium had been extinguished. Dark figures were blundering through the trees; children were crying; anxious shouts and panicked voices were reverberating around them in the cold night air.
Tori felt the urge to run out and help but didn't want to disobey. A larger crowd came running from the opposite direction, and Tori was pushed around. She was jerked away, losing sight of her friends. "FRED!" She screamed, trying to push through.
"Tori? TORI!" She heard him shout for her. She reached out for his hand, merely grabbing it when she had been pushed too far by a rather big wizard, who wasn't paying attention. She was ripped away, deserted. "FRED! GEORGE!" She screamed, trying to get through the crowd. But it was like trying to swim upstream.
She eventually found herself at crossroads, having no idea of where she had previously come from. She screamed out for anyone. Fred. George. Harry. Ginny. But they weren't anywhere near her. People were still fleeing around her, panicking. Tori went left, holding her wand out in front of her. She heard a scream of a woman and turned to see a Death Eater only feet behind her.
The Death Eater came nearer, raising their wand. Tori noticed the slightest of shaking in their arm before twisting their hand. "Stupefy!" They yelled, zapping Tori right in the chest. She was blown backward, hitting into a table with an "oof." She felt dizzy and could taste blood.
"Fred? George?" She croaked, fading in and out of consciousness. She laid near the table, unable to process what was going on until she felt herself get lifted upwards. Tori opened her eyes to see two ministry men, holding her by her arms. Her body ached, but she saw one look at their faces and knew something was wrong.
The world around her had grown darker, seeing that there was no light in the sky. The men marched her forwards, tightening their grip on her. "Hey, what's going on?" Tori asked loudly, trying to rip her arm away. The men didn't respond.
"What's the big deal? Hey! You're hurting me!" She cried. She was in a lot of pain from the stunning spell and could feel blood dripping down the left corner of her lip. "Please! What's going on?" She demanded, only to be answered with complete silence.
She was dragged towards a group of people, all wearing ministry badges. "Mr. Crouch," the man on the left of her said. "We found her lying not far from it."
"What's it? Can someone please tell me what's going on?!" She demanded. "Tori?" Arthur's voice split through the crowd. Tori saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione with him. Mr. Diggory was bent over, speaking to a house elf. "Mr. Weasley, please." Her legs shook and she nearly collapsed from the pain.
"She's not a prisoner! Don't treat her like one! What... what happens to you?" Arthur asked, helping her stand up. Tori took a shaky breath, "Stunning spell." was all she could muster before the pain in her chest was too much. Harry and Ron ran over to assist, holding her up by letting her wrap her arms around their shoulders.
Tori glanced up at the sky, nearly knocking herself and the boys over. A large white skull with a snake pouring out of its mouth was lighting the field around them. Tori gasped. It was the dark mark.
"Bloody hell..." She whispered, staring up at in with pure horror mixed with shock. "They're just children! We will get this sorted out."
With the help of Harry and Ron, Tori managed to walk all the way back to the tent where everyone else was. Because of the height difference between the boys, Tori was nearly dragging them down. "Sorry." She whispered, trying her best straighten herself up.
Arthur held the flap open for them, glancing around outside to make sure they weren't followed. "Dad?" Charlie's voice called out from the darkness of the boy's tent. "What's going on? Fred, George, and Ginny are here fine, but the others —"
"I've got them here." He replied. Fred's voice interrupted the others. "Tori. Dad, is Tori with you? She got carried away and we couldn't find her,"
"I'm here," Tori called hoarsely. Fred was very pale, he and George ran to her side immediately, helping her onto one of the orange couches to lie down. "What happened?" George asked, glancing at her bleeding lip.
"Death Eater... stunning spell to chest... everything hurts." She groaned, glancing around the room. Bill was seated at the kitchen table, having a few scratches on his shirt, while Percy was dealing with a broken nose. The twins and Ginny seemed fine but looked extremely shaken.
Tori shut her eyes, overhearing the argument over the house-elf Mr. Diggory had been talking too. Hermione was trying her best to tell Percy it wasn't her fault, but Percy wasn't having it. "Can someone just tell us what the mark was in the sky?" Ron demanded.
"It was You-Know-Who's mark." Tori and Hermione said at once. Arthur nodded solemnly, "It hasn't been shown in thirteen years. Of course, people panicked — it was like You-Know-Who was back again."
I don't get it," said Ron, frowning. "I mean... it's still only a shape in the sky...
"Ron, You-Know-Who and his followers sent the Dark Mark into the air whenever they killed," said Arthur. "The terror it inspired. . . you have no idea, you're too young. Just picture coming home and finding the Dark Mark hovering over your house, and knowing what you're about to find inside..." Tori winced. "Everyone's worst fear... the very worst..."
There was silence for a moment. Then Bill, removing the sheet from his arm to check on his cut, said, "Well, it didn't help us tonight, whoever conjured it. It scared the Death Eaters away the moment they saw it. They all Disapparated before we'd got near enough to unmask any of them. We caught the Robert's before they hit the ground, though. They're having their memories modified right now."
"Death Eaters?" said Harry. "What are Death Eaters?"
"It's what You-Know-Who's supporters called themselves," said Bill. "I think we saw what's left of them tonight — the ones who managed to keep themselves out of Azkaban, anyway."
Tori felt a twist in her stomach as Harry glanced over to her, remembering what she had told him over a year ago. Her Grandfather was a big You-Know-Who supporter, and he was captured and taken to Azkaban for it.
"We can't prove it was them, Bill," Arthur said. "Though it was," Tori added hopelessly. "I was stunned by one, they had the same masks. It was."
"Dad, we met Draco Malfoy in the woods, and he as good as told us his dad was one of those nutters in masks! And we all know the Malfoys were right in with You-Know-Who!" said Ron suddenly.
"But what were Voldemort's supporters —" Harry began. Everybody flinched. "Sorry," said Harry quickly. "What were You-Know-Who's supporters up to, levitating Muggles? I mean, what was the point?"
"The point?" said Arthur with a hollow laugh. "Harry, that's their idea of fun. Half the Muggle killings back when You-Know-Who was in power were done for fun. I suppose they had a few drinks tonight and couldn't resist reminding us all that lots of them are still at large. A nice little reunion for them," he finished disgustedly.
"But if they were the Death Eaters, why did they Disapparate when they saw the Dark Mark?" said Ron. "They'd have been pleased to see it, wouldn't they?"
"Use your brains, Ron," said Bill. "If they really were Death Eaters, they worked very hard to keep out of Azkaban when You-Know-Who lost power and told all sorts of lies about him forcing them to kill and torture people. I bet they'd be even more frightened than the rest of us to see him come back."
Tori sat up, despite both the twins trying to push her back down. "Let me up— He's angry. They denied they'd ever been involved with him when he lost his powers and went back to their daily lives... I don't reckon he'd be over-pleased with them, do you?"
"So... whoever conjured the Dark Mark... " Hermione said slowly, "were they doing it to show support for the Death Eaters, or to scare them away?"
"Your guess is as good as ours, Hermione," Arthur sighed. "But I'll tell you this... it was only the Death Eaters who ever knew how to conjure it. I'd be very surprised if the person who did it hadn't been a Death Eater once, even if they're not now... Listen, it's very late, and if your mother hears what's happened she'll be worried sick. We'll get a few more hours sleep and then try and get an early Portkey out of here."
But Tori wasn't sure she'd be able to sleep. Arthur let her stay on the couch since it hurt to move. Fred came back with a wet rag, helping her clean up her lip, which was stained with blood.
"Does that hurt?"
"Just one of the few things that did. Reckon it will scar?"
"Why? You want to look like your new brother even more?"
"Yeah, why not?"
this entire scene had me shook to write
