cv. the first task

The morning of the first task was nerve-racking. And Tori wasn't even a champion. The entire school was instructed to be down by the forest early on in the morning. Tori dressed warmly, pulling a hat over her messy hair.

After breakfast, the twins took out their new trunks filled with papers and money. "We're taking bets to get some of that money back," George explained.

"Isn't that how you got into your problem in the first place?" Tori asked him. He just stared at her and mumbled something about how she was too smart.

"I wonder what the first task is going to be!" Angelina told her, grabbing Tori's arm while they walked down towards the forest. The November breeze caused each student to clutch their jackets tightly towards their bodies.

There were loud roars coming from the other side of the stands. They all climbed on, running towards the other side. Many students stopped, gasping at the sight of what was inside of the cages.

Tori's eyes widened as she leaned across the rail. "Dragons?! That's the first task?" She scanned the area. There were people around the cages, feeding and unlatching them. Tori spotted a familiar redhead next to a brunette.

"Charlie!" She called out, waving. Charlie and the women Tori recognized to be Andromeda Scamander turned, waving before one of the dragons began to roar once again.

Fred and George were making their way through the stands, shouting out. "Bets, place your bets!"

"Bets taken, bets taken here!"

"Who fancies a flutter in today's bloodbath?" George was shouting as Tori followed them towards a spot. "Smart money's on Krum to survive.

"Ten to one of Fleur. Smart move. No, thank you very much." Fred grinned, taking a hand full of sickles and putting it in his trunk.

Tori watched the dragons in their cage with caution. She noticed out of the corner of her eye Hermione bounce off towards the Champions tent. "Hey, save me a seat. Okay?" She asked Fred, who nodded while taking another's money.

"Hermione! Wait up!" Tori shouted, running over to the girl. "You're going to see Harry, right?"

"I know we're not supposed to but —"

"I don't care. I need to talk to Cedric."

Hermione nodded, and the two of them rushed towards the champions' tent. There was absolutely no security outside. The two leaned against the outside, calling for their friend.

"Cedric?" Tori asked, seeing shadow set over the tent. "Who is zis?" A women's voice demanded. Tori knew immediately it was Fleur Delacour. "Please." She began. "I'm a friend of Cedric's. I have to talk to him."

She heard a huff, but then a call. "Ceedric. Zere is a girl for you." Tori heard movement around the tent and Cedric's voice was now against the tent flap. "Hey, I appreciate you coming down here but you're really—"

"Wow. I'm hurt." Tori said sarcastically. She heard a relieved sigh on the other side. "Merlin's beard, Tori." She opened the flap, jumping into his arms.

"Dragons?! That's what you're up against? Seriously?" She broke away from him, hearing a snap. They both turned, seeing Rita Skeeter and her camera crew smiling wide at them. "Ah, young love. Adorable! First Potter and his Granger friend and now this! If everything goes, unfortunately, today... you two may even make the front page!"

Tori balled her hands in fists, glaring at that nasty woman. Luckily, Viktor Krum stepped forward. "You have no business here. This tent is for champions..." He glanced at Tori and Hermione. "... and friends."

"No matter." Rita smiled. "We've got what we wanted. Good day, champions."

"Great," Tori muttered, turning back to her friend. Cedric apologized, running his fingers through his hair. "It's not your fault... also, are they crazy? Dragons? Did you know about this?"

"Yeah. And I agree... look, I —"

But Dumbledore had entered with the rest of the head of schools. "Gather round, please. Now, you've waited, you've wondered, and at last, the moment has arrived. A moment only four of you can fully appreciate..."

He surveyed the room, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion. "What are you doing here, Miss Granger? Miss Silvers?"

"Oh. Sorry, We'll just go." Hermione said quickly. Tori smiled at both Harry and Cedric before running out of the tent. Sighing, Tori pushed her way through the crowd, finding the twins quickly. Angelina, Alicia, and Lee scooted over to make room. Lee tilted his bag of Every Flavor Beans towards her. "You brought food to this?" Tori asked him, yet she took some anyway.

"I'm hungry! Besides, I don't know how long this thing is going to last!"

Tori rolled her eyes and smiled the crowd began to cheer. Cedric had come out of the tent to face his dragon. There were four golden eggs in the center of the field for each contestant. He emerged from his tunnel, putting a fist into the air to acknowledge the applause.

Each contestant had a different dragon, and each of them was stomach-turning. Cedric ran through the rocks, dodging the fire breath of the dragon.

Tori was leaning across the railing, holding her breath as she clutched the rail with a death grip. Cedric pointed his wand at a rock, turning it into a dog to distract the dragon. It worked and Cedric swooped in the center, grabbing the golden egg.

Tori hopped up, cheering loudly. "Go, Cedric!" She screamed, clapping. The dragon was once again detained, and the next was let out.

Fleur Delacour managed to distract the beast as well, yet the end of her skirt managed to catch fire. She put it out, grabbing her prize. Krum decided to stun the dragon in the eye and grab the egg.

The crowd was making a great deal of noise for Harry. Tori couldn't tell if they were good or bad, so she just decided to make hers louder.

He hid behind a rock and raised his wand, shouting, "Accio Firebolt!"

Nothing happened for a moment, and Harry seemed to be embarrassed. He stood up, watching the sky. Suddenly, Harry's large broomstick came flying towards him. The crowd went wild as he began kicking off. "Go, Harry!" Angelina was screaming into Tori's ear.

"Great Scott, he can fly!" yelled Bagman, as the crowd shrieked and gasped. "Are you watching this, Mr. Krum?"

Harry soared higher in a circle; the Horntail was still following his progress; its head revolving on its long neck — if he kept this up, it would be nicely dizzy — but better not push it too long, or it would be breathing fire again.

He plummeted just as the Horntail opened its mouth, but this time he was less lucky – he missed the flames, but the tail came whipping up to meet him instead, and as he swerved to the left, one of the long spikes grazed his shoulder, ripping his robes.

Tori gasped, nearly falling over. She wanted to jump over and run to the boy, but he zoomed around the back of the Horntail.

The Horntail didn't seem to want to take off, she was too protective of her eggs. Though she writhed and twisted, furling and unfurling her wings and keeping those fearsome yellow eyes on Harry, she was afraid to move too far from them.

He began to fly, first this way, then the other, not near enough to make her breathe fire to stave him off, but still posing a sufficient threat to ensure she kept her eyes on him. Her head swayed this way and that, watching him out of those vertical pupils, her fangs bared ...

He flew higher. Tori watched the Horntail's head rose with him, her neck now stretched to its fullest extent, still swaying, like a snake before its charmer.

Harry rose a few more feet, and she let out a roar of exasperation. The beast's thrashed again, but he was too high to reach now... she shot fire into the air, which he dodged.

"YEAH DRAGON!" Fred and George shouted, watching the beast fly into the air. The crowd was still screaming loudly. Harry dived. Before the dragon knew what he had done, or where he had disappeared to, he was speeding towards the ground as fast as he could go, towards the eggs now unprotected by her clawed, front legs – he had taken his hands off his Firebolt – he had seized the golden egg!

"Look at that!" Bagman was yelling. "Will you look at that! Our youngest champion is quickest to get his egg! Well, this is going to shorten the odds on Mr. Potter!"
