Friend Zoned {16}
“It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday,” William sang.
“William! Shut up!” Sonnet snapped.
Will grinned back at her. “I’ll sing if I want to.”
“Oh no you damn well won’t,” Sonnet growled, raising her fist threateningly.
“Drive faster. Get me out of this freaking death trap,” Will groaned, sinking down in the seat.
“Calm down Will. We’re almost to your house,” I assured. “I just have to pick up Ethan, and then I can drop you off.”
Will’s car was having problems, so I had offered to pick him up from work and drop him off. We were meeting up with Gideon for dinner in a little, so I also had to pick up Ethan.
I pulled into Ethan’s driveway and watched as he bounded out of his house. He was walking slightly hunched over, probably still in pain from the beating he had taken from Jude, Nate, and Landon.
“Hi Ethan,” I greeted as he slid into the backseat of the car with Sonnet.
“You’re related to Sonnet, aren’t you?” Ethan said, ignoring me and staring at Will curiously. It never ceased to amaze me at just how perceptive of things Ethan was.
“Yea. I’m Sonnet’s older brother,” Will said. “I’m Will.”
“Well hi there Will. I’m Ethan. You’re kind of cute,” Ethan said. Seriously, did this kid have a freaking filter between his brain and his mouth?
“Do you have any straight friends, Sonnet?” Will asked, rolling his eyes.
“I don’t need them. I have my Benji and my Gideon. And Ethan just kind of got dragged in with us,” Sonnet said.
“More precisely, I ran into a friendship with Benji. I was trying to get away from Nate and Landon before they caught me and tore me limb from limb,” Ethan reminded.
“Benji drove a getaway car. I’m impressed,” Sonnet said.
“I made your life a million times more epic. The least you can do is sleep with me,” Ethan said.
“I’m tempted to pull over, kick you out of the car, and run you over,” I informed him.
“You can hit it anytime you want,” he said, winking and gesturing at his body.
“Jude and his friends definitely take advantage of that offer,” Sonnet said.
My expression darkened. “I won’t let them hit you anymore, Ethan.”
“Aw, how cute. You’re trying to be noble. Well, I appreciate it Benji, but we both know that we’d get our asses kicked together,” Ethan said
“Is someone giving you problems Benji?” Will asked.
“Nah. Gideon’s ex is just mad,” I said with a sigh.
“Will will kick his ass and wow that is way too many wills in one sentence,” Sonnet said. “Will, change your name.”
“Don’t tell me how to live my life!” Will said.
“Oh what a shame. We’re home. Bye William,” Sonnet said as I pulled into their driveway.
“Hey, thanks for the ride Benji. And let me know if anyone is giving you problems. I’ll take care of them,” Will said, getting out of the car. “Nice to meet you Ethan. Sonnet, I hate you.” He shut the door and disappeared into the house after walking up the driveway.
“I hate Will, but he does look at you like a brother Benji. He’ll help you handle Jude if you ask him to,” Sonnet said with a shrug as I started driving towards the restaurant we were meeting Gideon at.
“I don’t want to drag Will into it,” I said.
“I do. He’s pretty cute,” Ethan said.
“Ethan, don’t you dare hit on my brother. The last thing I need in my life is another gay boy,” Sonnet said, flicking Ethan in the ear.
“Ow! Don’t flick me in the ear!” he whined, swatting her hand away and rubbing his ear.
“Guys, quit arguing! We’re here,” I said, parking the car.
We all got out of the car and went inside. Spotting Gideon, I led them over to his table and we sat down with him.
“Hi guys!” Gideon greeted with a smile.
“Hey Gid. Sorry we’re late. I had to drop Will off,” I said.
“I think you should have made him walk home. With all the candy he eats, he could use the exercise,” Sonnet grumbled.
“You’re so mean to your brother,” Gideon said, laughing.
“You only-child types will never know my pain,” she said with a sigh.
“Can we just eat already? I’m starving,” Ethan said, picking up his menu.
“Well, I know we’re either getting cheesecake or Toll House pie after we eat. I’m craving it,” Gideon said.
“Cheesecake,” I said automatically. “Ethan’s allergic to nuts.”
“Wow. That is so cruelly ironic,” Sonnet said.
“I’d happily die with Benji’s nuts in my mouth,” Ethan said.
I blushed and shot him a glare, elbowing him in the side. “Cut it out you pervert!”
He pushed my arm away and rubbed his side, grinning. “You know you love it.”
I became aware of Gideon watching us. His eyes were screaming questions at me, and I mentally groaned. He thought I had talked to Ethan about everything.
I ignored his look for now. I was sleeping over his house tonight, and I could tell him everything then. For now, I just wanted to relax with my friends and hopefully cheer Ethan up. He was still a little shaken up from Jude, Nate, and Landon.
A waitress stopped at our table. “Hi, can I take your drink orders?” she asked, eyeing Gideon hungrily.
We gave our drink orders to her and she eyed Gideon again before disappearing to get them. Gideon looked up and met my eyes. We both grinned at each other.
“Plan Z,” we agreed, nodding.
“What the hell is Plan Z and why do you two look like you’re going to kill someone?” Ethan asked, staring between us in confusion.
“Wow, you guys haven’t executed Plan Z in a while. This should be interesting,” Sonnet said.
“What is Plan Z?” Ethan asked again.
Sonnet hushed him as the waitress returned. She set down our drinks and pulled out a notepad, positioning her pen over it.
“Alright, what can I get you to eat?” she asked cheerfully, her eyes sliding over to Gideon.
I reached over and gripped Gideon’s hand in mine. “Do you know what you want yet, babe?” I asked.
“Besides you?” he said with a wink. He turned to the rapidly paling waitress. “I think I’ll just have chicken parmesan, please.”
“A-And for you?” she asked, turning to me.
“Um…” I chewed my lip and pretended to look over the menu.
“Greyson!” Gideon shook his head and gave the waitress an apologetic smile. “You’ll have to excuse my boyfriend. He’s very indecisive,” he said.
“Yea, but I’m not. I’ll take a cheeseburger,” Sonnet said.
“I’ll have the same thing as him,” I said, nodding at Gideon.
“Copying me again?” Gideon asked.
I leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Don’t I always?” I asked seductively.
“Yea, I’ll just have gnocchi,” Ethan said, gathering our menus and handing them to the waitress. She shot us a look before disappearing to get our food.
Gideon and I burst into laughter and he slung an arm around my shoulder. We beamed at each other proudly and slapped each other high-fives.
“Man I missed Plan Z,” Gideon said fondly.
“I missed seeing girls’ reactions to Plan Z,” Sonnet said.
“So Plan Z is where you pretend to date? Huh, how can I get in on this?” Ethan asked, eyeing me hungrily.
“Ethan!” I rolled my eyes.
“I’ll tell you my last name if you sleep with me. Not that I’m desperate or anything,” he said.
“No!” I said sternly, resisting the urge to flick his nose as if he was a dog.
The waitress returned a few minutes later and set our food down before hurrying off. We all ate hungrily.
“Man, I was so hungry I could’ve eaten a horse,” Ethan said once we were done eating.
“On to cheesecake!” Gideon said, grabbing the desert menu.
“I’m way too stuffed for that,” Sonnet said, Ethan nodding in agreement.
“Greyson and I can split one. Right Grey?” Gideon said.
“Right Gideon,” I said.
We ordered the cheesecake and waited until it came out. Gideon handed me a fork and we began to eat.
“Ew. I hate sharing food,” Ethan said as he watched us eat.
“They’ve been sharing food for years. They always get each other sick,” Sonnet said.
“Yea but then we hang out together and watch TV until we’re better,” Gideon reminded her.
“That cheesecake was delicious,” I said, dropping my fork onto the empty plate.
We paid and got up, everyone leaving and getting into my car. I drove to Sonnet’s house and we waved to her as went inside. I drove to Ethan’s house and glanced at Gideon. I mentally sighed.
“I’ll walk you inside Ethan,” I said, getting out of the car.
“Uh…I don’t think anything will happen to me in the three feet between your car and my front door,” he said, also sliding out of the car.
“I know. But I need to talk to you,” I said, signaling at Gideon that I would be out in a minute.
We walked up the driveway together and into his house. Ethan leaned against his wall and nodded at me to speak.
“Ethan…I thought it over. I don’t have romantic feelings for you. You’re more like a little brother to me,” I said. “I do love you, but only like a brother. I’m sorry. You deserve to be happy. You have it a lot rougher than you let on.”
Ethan smiled at me, an honest smile. “I was waiting for you to say that. I could see it in your eyes all along. You never had romantic feelings for me. But that’s okay. I’m just glad we’re friends. I’ve never had friends before.”
“Were you ever lonely Ethan?” I asked quietly.
“Duh. But I won’t be anymore. I value my friendship with you more than a relationship with you,” he said. “But…Just one last time.” He gripped my shirt and pulled me down, kissing me fiercely.
He released my shirt and I straightened up. He looked up at me and shrugged, his smile gone and his usual grin back on his face.
“Good luck with Gideon,” he said, winking at me.
“Bye Ethan,” I said.
I left his house and got in the car. Gideon and I remained silent, just listening to Alesana as I drove us to his house.
Once I pulled into his driveway, we went into his house. I followed Gideon to his bedroom and we sat on his bed together.
“Why did you walk Ethan into his house?” he asked, finally breaking the silence between us.
“So I could tell him that I love him like a brother,” I said.
Gideon looked at me in surprise. “Really?”
“Yes, really. Ethan is like a little brother to me, Gid. You’re the only person I love like…well, like a lover,” I said, taking his hand in mine.
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against mine. “Could we date? Could we try it?” he whispered.
“If you’re ready for that,” I said, trying to stay calm despite my rapidly racing heart.
“I want to try, Greyson. I’m just afraid of hurting you,” he said.
“You won’t hurt me Gideon,” I promised him.
“Will you be my boyfriend Greyson?” he asked.
“Do you even have to ask?” I smiled and kissed him.
We broke away from each other and I stared at him in shock. He noticed my expression and frowned.
“What? What’s wrong?” he asked.
I slowly stood up, still staring at him. I then proceeded to throw my hands in the hair and jump up and down wildly, while yelling in pure bliss.
“I’M FINALLY DATING GIDEON JACKSON MARCHESANE!” I cheered.
Gideon laughed as he watched me. He grabbed my hand and pulled me so that I was sitting on his lap. He wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed my cheek.
“I really think this can work,” he said.
“I know it can,” I said, smiling happily.
Once Jude found out we were dating, things would get complicated. But I already had a plan forming to make Jude leave us alone once and for all. And now that I was finally dating Gideon, I felt on top of the world. My plan would work, Jude would go away, and I could finally be happy as Gideon’s boyfriend.
