Chapter 3
I woke up early the next day due to my habit of working in my past job.
I took a shower as the memories of yesterday came flashing through my mind in an annoying way. It was very irritating, sure some were good but most were irritating.
I decided to take a walk around Ikebukuro and maybe to Shinjuku since I have nothing to do until I have a proper job. I changed into a plain light blue long-sleeved shirt with black slacks. I look like a business woman right now and if people didn't know me better, they would just think I am an ordinary woman walking around on a day off or running errands.
After my long yesterday, I've decided I should just stay low. I've caused more than enough troubles for one day. As I walked the busy streets of Ikebukuro, I saw a certain ravenette make his way to me. I gripped the strap to my sling bag and stared at him. He held out a hand knife and poked it at my side but I wasn't fazed with it. He chuckled and kept it in his jacket's pocket. I most certainly want to kick his ass now.
"How are you, Mei-chan?" I stared at him, blankly. I did not want anyone to ruin this day and clearly I did not want to be bothered. He stared at me, frowning, but otherwise urged me to follow him. "You know, you got me worried for hanging up on me yesterday." Hang up? My thought drifted back to yesterday and Celty came into my mind. "Ahh.. I was running away from signs and flying vending machines." I said bluntly and he cocked his head back while releasing an amused laugh. I saw a flash of light at the corner of my eye and I quickly reacted to see a woman with long hair holding a knife trying to stab Izaya. I kicked his back and he stumbled forward. I took a step back, letting the woman fall forward. Izaya looked back at me then the woman and laughed again. While wiping a tear off, he said, "Oh Namie-san! You shouldn't try that! Especially in front of people." He motioned the crowd beginning to form around us. I got very cautious and made a beeline far away from the crowd. I heard Izaya shout from behind but I ignored it. Flashbacks from my days were flooding my mind and I took out some painkillers from my bag. I swallowed them carefully and waited for the effect to wear off. This always happens when I'm the center of attention of strangers. Plus I can't risk myself being found now. I was crouching the entire time and didn't realize someone was standing in front of me. My hands were still shaking, this started when I made my first kill, I felt nothing doing it but after that, I felt a bit scared. I guess guilt still haunts me till this day.
Though my targets were dangerous criminals and such, sometimes even the police asks me for help, I still can't help but see those fear-filled faces looking at me like I'm a monster. It kinda stopped when I got the hang of it a couple years after my first kill but it came back as soon as I stopped killing. When I quit the underworld games. To the ones playing it, they don't know but the one that created this underworld meant it as a game, I knew because I've met him before. He was my first target. I was supposed to kill him on the spot with fear building up inside of him but instead, he gave me a golden-hilt dagger and a gun with some specialized bullets and told me to shoot him. It was my first mission and my first failure. I kept the two items he gave me up until now, keeping it as a sign of that failure.
I heard someone calling me when my train of thoughts finally stopped, I look up to see Celty and Izaya together, looking at me worriedly. I can't say that about Izaya because his back was facing me. I slowly stood up and wiped the sweat on the side of my head as I began to walk away. Celty noticed me and grabbed my arm, I stared at her tiredly. "Make it quick." It wasn't meant to be rude but I was getting tired of people disturbing me.
"I want to take you to a doctor I know to have you checked up." She said and Izaya looked at her, probably because she didn't use her phone this time. I groaned tiredly and Izaya seemed to look sorry. The last thing I want is other's sympathy towards me. I was trying to walk away when I felt something wrapped around my waist and pulled me towards a motorcycle. "Celty.. I'm tired, let me go." I couldn't even lift my eyelids when she placed me behind her. I leaned to her and instantly fell asleep.
The next thing I know is that I'm in a room where Celty is next to me. I sat up from the metal bed and cracked my neck which made Izaya, who just came in the room, flinched at the loud sound of bone popping. "So you're awake, Akamine-san." I heard a calm voice behind me which made me turn my head back. Sure it hurt from my aching back but I ignored the pain. There was a man in a doctor's coat and glasses on, arranging some files while Celty held out her phone. I turned to her and read it. "Celty, no. I'm fine." Apparently, she wanted to tell this doctor about my past but I declined.
"Akamine-san," I tensed, "you seem to have painkillers for traumatized patients. Would you tell me why?" I looked around to see all eyes on me, well helmet too. I sweated and thought of what to say, but when nothing comes up, I decided to use my last resort. "I used to work as a journalist and get involved in many many.. Traumatising tragedies," my voice trailed off to my thought again but I quickly snapped out of it. "I see, what triggers it?" I know he's a doctor, and I hate doctors, but I knew he was trying to help me. "Being a loud crowd. I usually wear my earphones when walking through the crowds but I forgot it today." I lied smoothly. This thing occurs every time I get anxious but I needed to lie so that none of them in the room would be involved in my problem. He raised a brow and shrugged. "By the way, I looked through all your stuff." I cracked my knuckle and he stiffened. "Who told you to do that, huh, Kishitani Shinra?" I smiled sweetly and he hid behind Celty. I saw a file with his name on it so I just assume it was him and turns out I was right. My phone and wallet were still inside my pocket but my bag's contents were all over the place. Since I was half laying down, I quickly got up but I regretted after. My head pounded as blood rushed to my head. I cursed mentally for my stubbornness and took the contents in my bag. It was only a small first aid kit, a few pictures and a lot of bandages. I was more cautious of the pictures but thankfully, no one saw it yet because it was still in the bag. I slowly put the items back in and looked at the three who brought me here, well two, one just checked me up. They stared back at me and I sighed. "What time is it?" I reached out to check my phone and it was 8 a.m., I almost choked on nothing due to my surprise. "You slept the entire night." Izaya said, his outfit was still the same as yesterday. 'You were lacking sleep so we thought it was okay to let you sleep.' Celty reasoned with me but I just waved it off. "Did you have somewhere to be yesterday?" I answered with a look that showed that I was still tired. "I need to find a new job."
"Well you're in luck!"
Everyone turned their heads to Izaya who was grinning like a madman. "I can give you a job." I raised my brow and crossed my arms. "What's the catch, Izaya?" A playful tone was used by me and he caught it very skillfully because most people can mistake it as a threatening voice, which includes the two there. I stared at Izaya a bit longer until he finally answered, "In return, you tell me about yourself." Celty, Shinra and I chorused,
"Eh?"
-----
I walked to a foreign office in my black slack pants and white long-sleeved shirt with a black vest over it. I had worn black gloves just in case. I wanted to kick my foot into his ass until he has to get it surgically removed but he gave me a job. I was desperate so I took it.
He told me to wear this and to be honest, it's like my old uniform during my hitman days. I don't know why he made me wear this but he better have a good explanation. I wore my shin-length boots because I might have to do errands because I don't actually know what my job is. My hair was tied up in a ponytail with the ribbon that came along with this suit. Yes, I call it suit. I didn't want to look so obedient so I used it as a hairband and it looks pretty good like that. I left one unbuttoned and fixed my vest. I look like a damn bartender. Come to think of it, doesn't that Shizuo guy wear a bartender outfit too?
Then it hit me like a bullet. It finally came to me why he wanted me to wear this. He wants me to act like Shizuo and be his personal assistant.
I knocked on the door loudly and it opened to reveal the woman from yesterday, she had a scowl on her face. "You must be his personal assistant.. You came to the wrong place for a job." She said. Yagiri Namie, she has a past. I've tracked her down before because of the experiment she does in her pharmacy but it was stopped by someone. I remained blank and stepped inside and ignored her protests. "Oh boss-kun!" I shouted and Namie looked at me weirdly. I smirked and winked at her. She held a flabbergasted face and it disappeared, returning the scowl from before. Izaya suddenly pulled me to the door and said goodbye to Namie before pulling both of us out. He examined my figure and I glared at him. He has his fingers on his chin and nodding approvingly.
"Personal assistant?" I raised my brow at him and he shrugged while smirking. "Your job is easy, follow me around anywhere and just do as I say." Easy? Who knows what you'll ask me to do, you dumb moron. Even with my state of mind like that, I followed him for his walk around the city.
I noticed people looking at us and I was getting really uncomfortable. Izaya stopped and laced his arm with mine while walking. I tried to pull it back but he wouldn't budge. "You look like my bodyguard, walking behind me like that. So just walk beside me, Mei-chan." I want to smash his face so badly.
While we were walking, he stopped by several shops and bought me some things, a cute bunny phone accessory, which I had attached to my phone. An ice cream, a new ribbon and a pair of earrings. It's short so I'm okay with it. It has a figure of a little heart and a star behind it, wonder why he bought this for me. I just wore them since he told me to. I was a few centimetres taller than him but it's unnoticeable so I had to slump so that I would look shorter. He tied the ribbon on my right wrist and I looked at him with a questionable look. He chuckled and just walked. We stopped by Russian Sushi and I saw Simon coming to our table to take our orders. He greeted me and Izaya but looked at my suit. I awkwardly looked away.
After eating, what awaits us is the last thing I want to see today, Heiwajima Shizuo holding a big vending machine.
I quickly uttered,
"Ah shit."
