Darn it! Darn it! Darn-! Oh no, I lost my cool again.
I looked at the washing machine that had just ruined my uniform. My working uniform! How am I supposed to explain this to Karato?! He's going to be pissed. Super pissed.
It had stains because some bastard mixed his clothes with mine and his had wine stains. I can recognize the look and smell anywhere. Once I realized it was wine, I accidentally lost my cool and trashed the whole laundry place. Well, there goes my savings.
I dropped to my knees while my hands are on either side of my head. I looked at the beaten up guy and glared at him, though he was unconscious. I don't care whether I keep my cool or not anymore. You mess with me, I will mess up your life, bastard. Everyone in the shop was quiet and fearful of me now that I've snapped. I was wearing a hoodie and it's late at night. I didn't make a sound while trashing the place so pretty much they don't know who I am. My hood was up and the shades I wore, kept my upper face from being shown. Then there's my mask I wear every time I'm out at night, who knows who or what will attack me at random times.
I do have an abnormal strength but I'd rather keep it a secret.
I gathered all my clothes and put it in my bag. I slinged it over my shoulder as I walked out of the shop after leaving a few bucks on the counter. Those guys are scared of me so they won't ask me money, I'll take this as a chance to pay only a little. I put my free hand in my hoodie's pocket and looked straight ahead as I thought of my destination. My apartment. I wouldn't call it home but it was all I had. Then my thoughts drifted off to my work, how the hell am I supposed to tell this to my manager? I haven't found my new job yet too! What if he fires me? What if I get humiliated in front of everyone? What if they all embarrass me in front of the customers?
Questions started bombarding my mind until I bumped into Simon. I let out a muffled 'ow' but seems like Simon recognized my voice because he called my name. "Mei, want some sushi?" I shook my head in an apologetic manner and noticed that there was the blonde guy named Shizuo and Izaya fighting in the streets again. A vending machine was about to hit me and I braced for impact but it never came. I focused in front of me and saw a back of a man bigger than me. "Simon!" He was holding it like it was nothing and I was honestly worried. Simon was the first one that talked to me in this city, a first friend here. Everyone, who was watching, just stared at it like it was a normal thing in their lives. But it still can't stop me from being worried.
I watched as Simon carefully put down the water-selling machine next to a convenience store. He approached Shizuo and lectured him about peace and no more fighting as Izaya disappeared out of sight. Once I figured everything was sorted out, I walked away from the scene. Not wanting to be a part of it.
I balled my fist as I remembered the fun times I had with my old family, I stared at the night sky and stopped. I felt a tear trickled down my cheek so I quickly wiped it and looked straight ahead to continue my walking. Once I reached my small apartment, I let myself rest for a while before looking back at the clothes. I sighed, I gave a call to my manager. As I waited for him to pick up, I stared at the wall like it was something I've never seen before. After a few rings, he said a 'hello'. Since I was still new for normal works, I have to do this. I explained the whole thing, of course I left out the whole trashing thing, he let out an amused chuckle. This was going nowhere.
"Look, Akamine. Just come to work early. I'll deal with it." I don't have a good feeling about this but I shrugged it off. "Alright, Karato-san." I hanged up, I don't like him and I never will. I threw my phone across the room but it landed on a soft cushion. My brow twitched in annoyance, "You... Nevermind, I'm grateful you didn't break." I picked it up and put it on my nightstand. My small apartment didn't even have a room. Once you go in, you could see the kitchen then the bed is in the living room. At least I'm grateful I have this.
The next morning, I went to work early to sort this out. When I came in the cafe, I saw Karato-bastard looking straight at a new girl. I rolled my eyes. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door to his office. His gaze quickly landed on me and urged me to come in. I came in and saw that the new girl was already uncomfortable. "About your uniform.." I paid attention to him. "Why don't we forget about that?" His hand travelled down my side and I tensed. "Aren't you used to this kind of touches?" He poked my side and I concealed a twitch. The girl just gripped her bag strap while looking down. "Karato-san... No I'm not so please take your hands away." He chuckled and put his hand on my thigh, before I knew it, I had already put him in a hold where he couldn't escaped. "Oi new girl, get outta here and find a job elsewhere." I said to her and she nodded, she bowed before she ran out. I let the bastard go and walked away. "I quit!" I yelled as I opened the door.
I finally realized what I've done and paled. What the hell have I done? I thought as I continued walking the streets in my black leggings and grey sport shirt. My money and phone were in my pocket so I didn't need to bring a bag. I saw the blonde guy again and he tried to approached me before Izaya could shout something. I feel sorry for him some times.
This street was really quiet and not a single person is here. My footsteps and the vending machine crashing onto the pavements also the laughter from Izaya were the only noise. Shizuo suddenly screamed his name while running towards Izaya. I said nothing and kept on walking, hoping they would not notice me.
I yawned as my sneaker made a squeak sound every time I dragged it on the pavement. My phone went off which made me alarmed. I fished out my phone and looked at the caller ID but it was unknown. I shouldn't, I thought. I remembered some of the digits on the number and took out a card in my other pocket.
Orihara Izaya.
He's calling me. For what reason?
I left it at that and answered it without a second thought. I heard some noises on the other line and sighed. "Hello?" I said, no one answered. All I heard was incoherent voices. I gripped my phone but released it as soon as I heard a response. "Yo, Mei-chan! Oh? Shizu-chan! Keep it down! I'm talking to Mei-chan!" I heard Izaya laugh and metal clashing in the distance of where I was. "Get back here, flea!!" I flinched and started running away from the area but before I could, a woman in black clothing and motorcycle stopped in front of me. Her helmet oddly reminded me of a cat though. She pulled my hand and I sat behind her on her motorcycle. She held out a phone and typed, 'Hang on tight'. I held her waist in my arms as she drove away.
We finally stopped at the park where the teens and I went to yesterday. I let out a long sigh when we both sat down at a nearby bench. "Oh man, why do I keep seeing those two?" I said to myself. I side-glanced the headless rider and she showed me her phone again. 'Are you okay?' I nodded. "So you communicate like this?" I asked, I knew the answer though. She shifted her helmet which I assume is a nod. "Why do they keep fighting? High school lovers?" I joked with a monotone voice, she slumped her shoulders and typed on her phone again. I read it and it said, 'Enemies since high school actually', that made me even more irritated. Oh great, I'm stuck with them.
Now that I think about it, I've never actually talked to that Shizuo guy before. Maybe I should ask about him. "Um, do you know that blonde guy?" Great, I sound like a high school girl in love. She looked at me with her phone in front of her helmet. I raised a brow, "You guys know each other since he was in high school? Cool." I said, now I'm just very bored. I sighed. "Those two always fight?" I glanced at her and she typed again, 'Every time they meet'. Okay, just wow. Don't they get tired of it?
It's awkward right now. I saw her typing on her phone countless times but deleting it afterwards. "You need to ask me something?" I finally asked. She looked at me, her shoulders tensed. Her helmet went downwards which I assume is an act of embarrassment. "It's okay, ask away. I'm sure you can keep secrets." It's what I hear. Plus from my experience, she is one of the trustworthy ones. She finally nodded and put her phone away. Suddenly a voice spoke which scared me a bit. "I'm Celty Sturluson." I stared at her in awe. "You don't seem scared of me, Akamine Mei-san." I gulped. Oh no. Maybe it isn't bad to tell her..?
"Well, I've seen worser things than a Dullahan, Celty." She kept quiet. I pushed my long brown bangs to the side and smiled softly. "I have quite a past, Celty."
With that, I explained to her how I got here and why I'm here but I left out the hitman part. "That's quite a past, Mei." I chuckled. "Sure is." The thought of my family helping me from time to time is a wonderful thing but I know, once I leave, I can never go back. That world just works that way. If you go back, you can never be accepted back. Well actually you can but you need everyone in the family to agree. That's how my family works.
"So you work as a journalist but you want to stop. And because of that, you have to go into hiding for these two weeks because of some people after you. They're after you because of the information you have." I nodded, she catches up really quickly. "Mei," I looked her way and she held out a hand. "Do you want to be my friend?"
My eyes widened slightly but answered, "Yes," I took her hand in mine, "I would love to."
----
Celty sent me home and I quickly went in my apartment when she drove away. My first time to get a female friend, maybe not human, but female friend! I'm excited, all my life I've been with men. I squealed until my neighbor knocked on the wall, screaming at me. I shouted a 'sorry' and went straight to bed.
I was smiling when I went to sleep. What a happy day this was. All's well that ends well.
