Chapter Two
The walk seems to go by to quickly her honey blond hair swinging behind her. Her mother must have done her hair as her usual ponytail was replaced with a delicate french braid. Aryn took pride in her hair as it reached down to her hips, and despite her pride the only thing Leela has ever seen Aryn's hair in was a ponytail until know. She walked up the steps, Leela could see a hint of hesitation as she stood by Frank's side.
Leela had a feeling on where Aryn would be heading, Aryn also had a pretty good idea. If she didn't it would be one of the biggest surprises of the year. When most kids stood next to the leader they really looked like kids, but with Aryn's shocking height, he didn't seem so tall anymore. Her resting face was forever a grin, a grin that had gotten her in trouble wit the teachers more often than not.
Leela glanced up at the slide, smiling at all the information that she already knew from being by her side almost 24/7. Frank cleared his throat once reading out her place. "Jock!" Aryn's face brightened as she raced over to the jocks high fiving everyone present.
Every group had a few people present to represent each group along with every kids parents also around. Leela's own parents were both geeks, she had a love for reading and movies. So, being a geek wouldn't be surprising, but it wasn't exactly where she wanted to be.
Leela's heart raced quicker as each name passed. She longed to be with the musicians, but also to be a jock, then she could stay by her friends side. Yet they could still be friends and be in different social groups, or that's what Leela believed. Name after name, group after group it was a never ending cycle, those who knew where they belong excited to be home, those who thought they would be going to one place, but heading somewhere new still excited. And those like Leela with no idea just happy to be anywhere. So far no one had been in the Freaks and
Nobodies and no one want to be the first.
Maybe this year no one would go to the Freaks, maybe this year everyone had a place where they belonged. Mary Hark, was up which meant Leela was only a few names away or she could be the next name. She was jealous of those confident about where she would be heading. This wasn't suppose to be a stressful ceremony, but yet she felt like any other test day. She felt sick beyond her stomach, and her throat was clenched constantly on the verge of tears.
"Leela Heart," Frank called out. Leela searched the crowd of jocks once again finding Aryn's eyes. Her best friend sent her a reassuring smiling silently cheering her on. Leela felt as everyone's eye landed on her.
Her parents always told her the story of when they had been placed. They always said the world seem to almost freeze at the pace it went and now she really understood. One... Leela pulls her self to the edge of the chair standing up slowly.
Two... She stumbles as she tries to get out of the row.
Four...She reaches the isle, now even more exposed so peoples every judging eyes. All trying to guess where she would be placed.
Five... Frozen in place she looks now for her parents eyes, they are smiling widely already proud of where ever she goes jealous that they would be watching Leela from now on.
Six... The nervous tear finally falls down her cheek.
Seven... She fines the ability to move once more her eyes finding on last person, Charlie, he was the kindest person she had ever met, he was going to be a Peacemaker, she could tell. He smiled softly her way as he like everyone else were looking towards her. Her heart skipped a beat at the soft smile.
Eight... The stage now seems miles away, she would never reach it. She would never now, she feared to be stuck walking down the path of unanswered questions for the rest of her life. The stage held the answers, but each step never seem to bring her closer.
Fourteen... She was now near the different social groups all cheering her forward, trying to give her the last second boost she would need.
Seventeen..Her left foot found the stair, but only for a second. Of all the moments to slip up the stair this was the worst time, but Leela never had luck on her side as she held her hand out bracing her fall. scrambled up the rest of the stairs.
Twenty-Four... She finally found her spot next to Frank, red faced, her head looking ot the floor wishing to disappear. She watched as Frank lifted up the tablet scrolling to the bottom to read where she will be placed for the rest of our lives.
Twenty-Six... Frank cleared his throat like he had for the rest of the kids, Leela slowly raised her head biting her lip. She had her arms fold over her stomach in a defensive way, trying to get people to look away.
"Leela Heart after much consideration we have come to the conclusion that you will be best with the.... Jocks!" Frank read out. The jocks once again erupt into cheers as Leela raced towards the group. She was awful at sports but having spent the majority of her time with Aryn who did play sports, Leela guess it mostly made sense.
She raced over to Aryn pulling her into a tight hug. Aryn squirmed not really appreciating the affection. "Good Job, squirt!" Aryn said patting her back, Leela pulled away smiling ear to ear. She didn't have to leave her friends side for a long time now. We took our seats once again as Frank called out the next name.
Leela was finally able to relax and enjoy the ceremony knowing that she would be taking on the problems of social groups with her best friend and not alone. Although at the back of her mind she couldn't help but think that they had placed her in the wrong place, spending a lot of time at the sport was one thing but being good at sports a totally separate and more important fact.
As we watched together Aryn dipped her head so only Leela could hear her. "I loved that little trip you did on the way up the stage it was very impressive."
Leela's eye widened shoving her friends hissing, "Shut up." Her face was probably red once again as she thought about her grace going up the stairs. "I'm never living that down am I?" She added, and Aryn shook her head chuckling. Sighing she knew it was better to except the fact now rather than arguing for a long time.
The two did their best to pay attention, but slipped into a quiet conversation more often than not. People thought nothing much of it thanks to Jocks reputation. They started guessing where the next person would be going. They were honestly awful at it, but hey it was fun.
"Charlie Ross," Frank read off.
Aryn smirked, "I bet your hoping he gets jock too."
"I would be surprised if he went anywhere, but the peacemakers." Leela confessed. Charlie was a sweet heart who was always willing to help out, unlike the rest of his friends who were all jocks. Aryn snorted annoyed that her friend had basically ignored her teasing.
Every girl at the school had at one point had a crush on Charlie, although Leela wasn't entirely sure if Aryn had. He was kind and looked for the best in all, and no one could really take advantage of it. It was hard to be mean to someone who was genuinely nice to you and never saw the bad. Aryn argued that it was annoying and rather boring way to go through life. Leela really looked up to the guy, he had help her up after she had beautifully trip once and instead of walking past like the rest of his friends. He reached out and some how managed to not embarrass her whatsoever.
He ran a hand through his red hair walking calmly. His friend hollered at him doing their best to embarrassed the poor guy. He simple waved sending the a cheerful smile. His apple green eyes shining in the bright light. When he reach the stage he stuffed his hands in his slacks. He smile seemed to brighten the whole room as he seemed completely at ease.
"You will be best with the..."
