Chapter 24 - The day before the end of the world

Sunday 12th September - The day before Doomsday

Yoongi was the first to wake.

The barn was eerily quiet that day, like the world was holding its breath. Not a single creature besides him stirred as he stood up silently.

Walking slowly outside, he breathed in the cool morning air and sighed.

It had come too fast.

He could hardly believe that tomorrow, all of this would be gone...

The birds singing above his head, the grass shooting beneath his feet, the gentle breeze brushing his face..

Soon, there would be nothing left.

The silence was deafening him - so much so that he rubbed his ears, desperate for some form of noise.

As if his prayers were answered, there was a quiet scuffle behind him and he turned slowly to see Jimin standing in the door of the barn.

"It's quiet..." The younger breathed softly.

"Too quiet." Yoongi agreed as the younger came and stood by his side.

The pair looked out over the field, as if burning pictures of it into their minds.

"I can't believe that we won't be here in a day or two..." Jimin gulped. "It feels so long ago that we met... and Hobi hit you with the car... and you were lying on our sofa sipping a drink I made you..."

Yoongi laughed.

"And you lent me your phone with the kitten case on it." He smiled.

Jimin chuckled and sighed.

"Yeah... the phone..."

Another silence fell between them, but rather than pained, this one felt more longing.

"I would give anything just to spend more time with you..." The younger said softly. "To laugh with you, cry with you... there is so much I wanted to show you and tell you."

Yoongi turned to Jimin and took his hand.

"Just value the time we have left." He whispered. "We have all the time in the world."

He lent forward and kissed Jimin's forehead gently before ruffling his hair.

"Anyway - we still have a whole day don't we?" He smiled. "Don't hit me with the soppy stuff just yet. Save it for the meteor."

Jimin laughed sadly and put his hands in his pockets, looking around at the pitiful scene.

Autumn leaves were drifting down from the stick-like trees around them - in almost every tome of gold and brown and orange and yellow you could think of.

"Did you know, if you catch a falling Autumn leaf, you will share eternal happiness with whoever is walking with you?" Jimin asked.

Yoongi scoffed.

"Are we in an anime now?" He chuckled. "Or is that a K-drama thing you picked up?"

"Actually neither." Jimin smiled gently. "My mother used to tell me that. She would always catch one for me and we would take it home and soak it before using a cookie cutter and taking a mini shape out of it. My favourite one was a leaf she caught me on my birthday. It was lovely golden brown, and she soaked it and cut a heart out of it before drying it again."

Yoongi watched the younger, listening intently.

"And? What happened to it?"

"W... when I was 14 years old... I told her I wanted to become an idol... and she got angry saying she wouldn't let me... so I took the leaf and crumpled it in front of her face, saying I didn't need her any more... and I went to live with Hobi hyung..."

Yoongi wrapped an arm around the boy's shoulder and smiled softly.

Jimin continued his story.

"T...Then a week after I left... I got a phone call saying she had committed suicide... And I... I've never been able... to... to..."

Tears were trickling down his face by this point, and Yoongi reached out to wipe them away. He stroked Jimin's hair gently and hugged him.

"I am sure if she could see who you have become, she would be eternally happy for you." He smiled.

Jimin blinked back his tears.

"She would have adored you." He smiled. "Mum... always liked boys like you. She thought they would be a good influence to me."

Yoongi laughed aloud.

"Yeah. Influence..." He chuckled. "Speaking from a hacker's perspective, I don't think that is quite the right choice of word!"

Jimin smiled a little.

Just then, Jungkook and Hobi emerged from the barn, both yawning viciously.

"What did we miss?" Jungkook asked, running and sitting beside them. "Has the meteor come yet?"

"That is tomorrow you dingbat." Hoseok smiled, hitting the youngest round the head.

All four of them sat together on the grass right near Tae's patch.

"So this is really it then? The last full day of Earth?" Hobi asked softly.

"I guess so." Yoongi sighed. "I never thought it would really get here."

Jungkook smiled and let out a soft giggle.

"At the very least, I thought I would be on a rocket out of here by now!" He grinned.

They all turned to him.

"You still have that ticket for the rocket?!" Yoongi gasped. "You could get out Jungkook! You could save yourself!"

Jungkook held up his hand.

"Stop." He demanded in a gentle tone. "Yeah I have the ticket, but really... what is the point of having it if I can't spend my life with you guys? With Taehyung? I might as well die if you guys aren't there with me."

Yoongi cried out and grabbed his shirt over where his heart was. He spoke in a pained voice, scrunching his eyes shut.

"Right... Right... in... the... FEELS!"

They all laughed and rolled their eyes at his pathetic drama attempt.

"So what can we do today?" Yoongi asked.

"Today? I just want to sit and talk." Jimin said quietly. "There is so much that we should have said to one another... that... we should say now...maybe?"

They all looked at him.

"That's a really sweet thing to s-" Yoongi started.

"Is this a K-Drama?" Jungkook cut him off, giggling. "No no no no NO cheesiness here please! I am 100% lactose intolerant from now till the end of the Earth!"

"Lactose intolerant huh?" Hobi frowned, tilting his head to one side. "I guess you won't be wanting the chocolate bars I have in my bag then."

All eyes turned to Hoseok like lightning bolts.

"What.Did.You.Say?" Jimin asked, wide eyes.

"You... you brought-" Yoongi grinned like a kid.

"CHOCOLATE?!" Jungkook finished, laughing. "What was I saying? Yeah. I eat milk for breakfast! I mean - drink cheese! Wait... no... what am I even-? Can I have some please please please please Hobi Hyung-nim?"

Hoseok laughed and threw them a milky way each, which they thanked him for and began to eat.

A few hours later, all four of them were sat inside, talking about this and that.

Every now and then, Yoongi would plant a soft kiss on Jimin's nose or forehead, to which the younger would giggle and blush.

Jungkook watched as the pair held hands and bit his lip, excusing himself for a minute.

He left the three men and walked outside, to the place they had buried Taehyung. Kneeling beside the muddy mound, he sighed and looked around.

"I wonder what you would think of all of this?" He said softly to Taehyung, who, he was sure, was listening from down below. "I wonder what you would say?"

He stroked the dirt and blinked back tears.

"I wonder if you would still be the same, springy Taehyung I knew and loved? I bet you would be the one making us smile, and making jokes about Yoongi and Jimin kissing... That is just what you were like..."

He looked up at the sky and sighed, a smile and a frown fighting for dominance over his expression.

"There was so much I wanted to tell you TaeTae." He choked. "I wanted to make you mine... and make you happy-"

"You did make him happy."

Jungkook jumped and gasped, looking up at Jimin, who had appeared from nowhere.

"W...were you there the whole time?" He asked.

"No. Just since the "I wonder if you would still be the same springy Tae" Jimin smiled. "Come inside. It's cold out here."

He offered his hand out to the boy, who accepted it slowly.

They went back inside, to get their last night of sleep ever...
