Chapter 22 - My first and last best friend
Kim Taehyung was buried outside the warehouse, in the only shady spot available - under a pathetic, spindly excuse for a tree.
The funeral was basic at best, the grave dug with their bare hands as rain hammered down on their backs.
With his filthy fingers, Yoongi ran his hands through Tae's hair, fixing it back into his regular, unkempt-but-fluffy mop.
The other boys had agreed that Yoongi should have a little time alone with Tae - they had been childhood friends after all.
He was knelt beside the boy, slowly stroking his hair.
"Why did you leave, Tae?" He whispered softly. "Why would you abandon me and go to a place where I can't follow? I thought that was the role I was meant to play! You are the one who is supposed to follow me around and help clear up my mistakes! What am I supposed to do now?"
The boy didn't answer. Of course he didn't.
He stared down at the younger's face. There was no expression on his icy blue lips, no colour in his drained, white skin. Although they had cleaned him up using the tap on the side of the warehouse, there were still tiny traces of red around his lips where he had lost blood.
And of course there was the splodge of red over his shoulder, and the smears over his t-shirt...
"I...I know you can't hear my voice anymore..." Yoongi began, "Any you of all people know I am not one for comforting speeches, so I guess I will have to keep this short."
He shifted off his knees and sat beside him, crossing his legs and cradling the limp boy like he had done the night before. He spoke, looking at his closed eyes as if Tae was really listening.
"I think that... even though I made it seem like you drove me completely insane, I don't think you ever really realised how much you meant to me. I was a lonely, nerdy kid with no friends and quite frankly, no dreams for the future. All I had was a computer and a mouse to keep me entertained. No matter how many times I tried to push you away, and no matter how many times I got us both into trouble, you never once left me to deal with it alone. You were always there... and it was such an honour to know a guy like you... even if I didn't realise it at first. So thank you Kim Taehyung. Thank you for being my first - and last - best friend."
He choked back tears as the other boys came up behind him.
Well... two of them.
Jimin and Hobi walked up, and the younger placed his hand on Yoongi's shoulder.
"It's time."
Yoongi nodded and stood up, carrying Tae bridal style over to the hole they had dug with their fingers.
He laid him down gently and stroked his hair one last time.
Jimin and Hoseok said their brief goodbyes and sighed. Jimin sighed.
"Is Jungkook sure he doesn't want to-"
"He is sure." Hoseok nodded sadly.
"Then... I guess it is time to say goodbye."
The three boys took handfuls from the pile of dirt they had made. It was still raining, but less so now - a light drizzle at most.
They laid Tae to rest at long last, saying their last goodbyes before turning and leaving.
Yoongi was still confused...
Jungkook was nowhere to be seen.
The boy was curled up a dark corner of the warehouse. His face was stained with tears, and his eyes were watery as he stared at the photo on Taehyung's
He had taken it secretly, when Tae had been messing around the day before, after he had tied his hair up like a firework.
He already missed him.
His boxy smile, his bouncy laugh - even his dumb ideas!
He leant forward and kissed the screen, stroking the image gently.
"I won't ever forget you..." He whispered, just as Hoseok came round the corner.
He hid his phone in his lap.
Hoseok sighed and came to sit beside him.
"Are you okay?"
The younger boy nodded and closed his eyes.
Hobi looked down at the glow in Jungkook's lap and reached out to take the phone, sighing as he saw the image on the screen.
"I miss him." The younger whimpered, wiping his eyes.
"I know. Me too." The older sighed, wrapping his arm over his shoulder.
Jungkook rested his head on the boy's shoulder. Hoseok rested his own head on the younger's.
He had a question.
Something he had been wondering about for a while now.
"Jungkook?" He said softly.
"mmm?"
"Were... were you and Taehyung more than friends?"
A silence hung over them. Hoseok couldn't tell I it was awkward, or just a plain silence.
"Yes..." The younger whispered, breaking down into tears. "It's true, Hyungnim..."
"Shhhh.... shhh it's ok." Hoseok sighed. In truth, he had always known.
The way they used to look at each other, the way they treated each other, laughed with each other.
The signs were always there....
The older pulled the younger into an embrace, and Jungkook buried his nose in the older man's shirt.
He missed Tae more than any words could express.
"I...I loved him..." The younger whispered, sniffing and wiping his eyes. "But then I guess nothing I love ever works out. I should have known..."
"Never say that." Hoseok scolded, stroking his hair. "Tae loved you too. I could see it."
He took something out of his pocket and gently picked up Jungkook's hand, opening his fingers. He placed something cold in the palm of his hand and closed the boy's fingers around it.
Jungkook looked down as his closed hand, then back up at Hobi.
"What is it?" He asked.
"Look. It was his."
Hoseok stood up.
"Keep it. If you don't want it, give it to Yoongi."
The older man smiled softly before leaving the other alone.
Jungkook looked down at his hand and opened his fingers to reveal the cold, silver object.
The bullet.
Jungkook's breath caught in his throat as his eyes fell upon the tube, glinting in the light without a trace of blood on it. To look at, you would have never believed that something s small and beautiful as a bullet was capable of taking someone's life...
This was just proof of how delicate life really was, and that it only needed the subtlest push to tip it over the edge.
He pocketed the bullet and sighed.
He had to keep going.
For Kim Taehyung.
He stood up and wiped away his tears, taking a deep breath before leaving the dark corner, and stepping outside.
The rain was no longer pouring, but there was still no hint of a blue sky.
He could see the pile of dirt, where Taetae was buried, but he tore his eyes away from it and turned his gaze to the three boys who were sat against the barn, talking inaudibly.
Jimin looked up and smiled as he saw him. He nudged Yoongi and he looked up too.
"What are you waiting for?" Jimin yelled from across the way. "Hurry up!"
Jungkook chuckled softly and ran over, practically diving beside Hoseok, who was sat on the end.
Jimin breathed out and rested his head on Yoongi's shoulder.
"So... four days left, huh?" He sighed.
There was no denying it. They were trying to avert his mind from Taehyung.
"mm." Jungkook mumbled. "What are we supposed to do now?"
"It's strange." Hoseok chuckled. "Most people, upon hearing that the end of the world was coming, would be rushing around - doing things they always wanted to do; seeing people they always wanted to see... but I guess we are the exact opposite..."
"I can't wait for it to end." Yoongi huffed. "I just want the Earth to hurry up and get destroyed already so I don't need to worry about two mad cops chasing after me, or Jimin snoring in the night."
Jimin elbowed the older boy in the ribs hard, and the oldest boy laughed.
Jungkook smirked.
"I, for one, want the world to get on with being destroyed so I don't have to see any more of you two flirting. Would you just hurry up and get married already?" He shot at the pair of them.
Jimin looked up at Yoongi and pecked his lips, making Jungkook and Hobi pretend to gag.
"Really guys?" Hoseok moaned. "Come on - there are kids present!"
Jungkook laughed and shoved the older man's arm.
"Guys - seriously - what can we do?" The youngest asked. "I don't know about you, but I don't want to sit bored out of my mind for four days waiting for my death. Lets go somewhere."
"It's too dangerous." Yoongi interrupted. "We would be spotted instantly. Recognised. That officer is like a sniffer dog with rabies. He isn't going to stop until the end."
"Frick that." Jimin smirked. "I want to have some fun. Tae always lived his life on the edge - lets go out somewhere!"
"Where though?" Hoseok asked. "The Busan marketplace is hardly thrilling."
"There is only one place I've always wanted to go, but never had the time." Jimin smirked.
"Where?"
"The club next to the market. The one where all of the cool kids go when they reach the age of eighteen-" Jimin smirked, looking at Jungkook, who was still underaged.
"We'll be caught in seconds..." Yoongi sighed. "I won't let you risk it, babe."
"Lets just go." Hoseok chuckled. "If I hear Yoongi calling Jimin "babe" one more time I am going to vomit."
They all laughed.
Despite Yoongi's protests, it looked like they were going to the club...
