Chapter 20 - Fond Memories
Taehyung stood at the back of the police station, waiting for his opportunity. He was surprised that Jimin had agreed to help with his plan, but he guessed that in the end, the boy had forgiven him. After all, Yoongi had saved Jimin's life almost as many times as he had put it in danger.
Tae looked down at the lighter in his hands and snapped it, trying to get a spark. It took him several attempts, but finally, he got a glowing yellow flame dancing on the end of the metal.
Holding it up to the magazine he held in his other hand, he patiently waited for the pages to catch alight. Eventually, when the fire had begun to eat its way towards his fingers, he held it up to the smoke detector.
He prayed that his plan would work. If not, all five of them would end up in jail before the end of the day.
Just then, a piercing alarm screeched through the building as the smoke detector began to blare down the corridors.
He heard the panicked shouts of officers as they ran to the cells with handcuffs and snapped them round the prisoners wrists and led them out of the cells. Soon enough, he was the only man left in the building.
Clambering out of the window he had broken to gain access, Tae jumped onto the grass and ran round the station. The scene out the front was one of chaos: every prisoner was being held with handcuffs to prevent escape, but obviously, they were all writhing to be set free. Half the people were dressed in messy clothes, as if they had been held in custody for several years. There were old men, young teens, middle aged women, and even some children who barely looked old enough to have a criminal record!
In the crowd, he spotted Yoongi and Jungkook. One officer with brown hair was holding them both tightly, but Yoongi wasn't struggling. They were both clipped together with the same pair of cuffs...
He spotted Jimin and Hobi peering round the other corner of the building and gave them a thumbs up.
Just like that, they sprung into action.
Jimin sprinted for Yoongi, Tae ran for Jungkook, and Hobi went for the officer.
Yoongi stared at Jimin as if possessed as he came to help. The younger boy tried to pull the blonde away as Hobi jumped on the officer's back.
Jungkook kicked Jin in the shin hard and the man stumbled back, loosening his grip and giving the boys a chance.
"RUN!" Tae yelled at them all, and they sprinted away from the crowd. Yoongi and Jungkook groaned as the cuffs bit into their skin, and tried to hold hands to synchronise the movement of their arms and stop the cuffs hurting.
There were so many people around that Jin lost sight of them almost instantly, but Namjoon, who had been trying to find the name list, spotted Yoongi's blonde hair and began to chase them.
The cuffs were very tight, making it harder to run, but they still kept up with the other three - just...
Yoongi began to fall behind, panting heavily as he tried to keep up. Jungkook tried to help by hauling him forward, but in the end he had to slow down or Yoongi would fall.
But Namjoon wasn't going to slow down...
He managed to catch up, reaching out a hand as they ran, desperately reaching for the silvery cuffs. The officer's fingers brushed the metal, knocking Yoongi off balance and they all fell, rolling across the tarmac to a painful stop.
The other boys kept running, unaware that they were two men down until Jimin looked over his shoulder and saw three on the ground. Namjoon, Kook and Yoongi.
"YOONGI!" He yelled in panic.
The officer got up easily, ignoring the bleeding scraped that had appeared through the rips in his office trousers, and the stinging feeling that was spreading over his elbows.
Yoongi, however, was still recovering. Jungkook tried to get up, but their linked hands made it impossible, and they both tumbled back on the tarmac hard. They were as helpless as fish out of water as Namjoon stalked up behind them.
They heard Jimin's shout and the blonde boy looked up , his face covered in scrapes from where his chin had hit the floor over and over.
"YOONGI!"
Before he could register what was going on, there was a thump as Jimin collided with Namjoon behind him.
The older man was thrown violently back to the floor as the boy ran directly into him, stumbling at the impact.
Yoongi felt someone grab his hands and haul him up. Jungkook cried out as the metal ring dug into his skin as he was dragged up too, and Jimin gasped, also supporting him.
Somehow, all five boys managed to escape that day, all of whom came out relatively unscathed.
When they were clear of the station, Tae pulled them into an alley where they caught their breath.
"Everyone alright?" He asked, panting heavily.
No one could speak. They just held up their hands with ok signs as they leant against the wall, gulping oxygen.
Yoongi looked down at his wrist, still clapped in irons. The sharp edges were biting into his skin after all of the drama. Blood trickled down his wrist and he flinched with every movement - each one making the metal dig deeper.
"How do we get these off?" Jungkook asked, biting his lip as his wrist suffered a similar fate.
Tae examined the boy's cuffs, grabbing their hands and pulling them up to examine the lock carefully.
Jungkook whimpered, making Tae apologise quietly.
"Anyone have a paperclip?"
No one did, so he made them all wait in the alley while he tried to locate the closest shop.
Minutes later, he returned with a paperclip.
"Yoongi was the hacker. I was the brains." He smirked, making the blonde roll his eyes.
Tae unfolded the paperclip and bent the end into a strange, wobbly hook.
"Lift your hands." He ordered them. They did so with eyes scrunched shut and teeth clenched in pain.
The sandy haired boy inserted the clip into the lock, jiggling it around a bit. He grumbled as he struggled to find the catch
It wouldn't click open.
He tried taking it out and putting it back in but the lock wouldn't budge.
"Hobi, can you reach in my back pocket and hand me the thing in there?"
Hoseok reached his hand in and his fingers closed around some sort of tube.
He pulled it out and laughed as he saw what it was.
"You are going to break the handcuffs with Freshmint Chewing gum?" He laughed.
"Look in it."
Hobi opened the foil tube and scrunched up his eyebrows in confusion.
"Why do you carry cod liver oil capsules in your pocket? What if you sit down on them? And I swear that only people over the age of 50 take these things."
"Give me one." Tae ordered. "Quick - their wrists are bleeding!"
"Fine- fine!"
Hoseok popped out one of the capsules from the chewing gum packet and handed the yellowish, liquid-filled pill to the boy.
"Thank you."
Tae bit off the top of the pill, gagging at the taste and spitting the tiny piece out.
He held out the rest of it, which was now acting as a kind of cup for the oil inside, and tipped the foul liquid into the keyhole.
Working quickly, he put the paperclip back in and a loud click echoed around the alley, followed by a sigh of relief from everyone.
"I missed your genius." Yoongi smirked, sliding the cuffs off of their wrists, "But I definitely didn't miss Jungkook's!"
"Hey!" Jungkook pouted, rubbing his wrists to soothe them.
Yoongi held the cuffs up and examined them as the oil began to drip out onto the floor.
"How did you do that?" He asked Tae. "I've never seen you bust a lock in all the years I've know you."
Tae held up the paperclip, looking at the boy like he was dumb.
"I thought you were watching." He said. "I used the clip."
"No - when did you learn?" Yoongi asked.
"When you left I worked on a few cases with the Gangdo group." He explained. "They taught me so I could help in one op."
"They were our best customers." Yoongi chuckled. "Till I sold them out. Then they only did business with you after that."
"Sorry to interrupt your trip down memory lane, boys, but we really should find a place to stay." Hobi smirked. "We can't go back to the hotel where all our stuff is because Yoongi yelled out the name of the hotel to the police yesterday when they locked him up."
Jimin scowled at Yoongi.
"I still can't believe you did that!" He growled. "And what the hell did you mean by your "Final message" by the way?"
"GUYS!" Hoseok interrupted. "Come on! Focus!"
"I know a place." Jungkook volunteered. "We can go to a place they would never suspect us to go."
"Where's that?" Jimin asked.
"Where Hoseok got shot. We should go to the warehouse."
There was silence.
"You aren't selling us out again are you?"
"Scouts honour, I am not. You know I am on your side now." Jungkook swore.
The nodded, agreeing to go to the warehouse. It was the only place the police wouldn't suspect.
They decided to walk, as it was too dangerous to hail a cab. If the driver recognised them and reported their location to the police it would all be over.
The problem was, the only people with wallets and phones were Tae, Jimin and Hobi. Jungkook and Yoongi had no money, so they would be fully reliant on the cash from the other three for the last six days.
The rain had turned the road through the field into a sludgy, sticky mess, that sucked on their shoes and slowed them down. It was near impossible for a car to drive the warehouse, so they should be safe for the time being.
When they reached the dusty building, it was dark. The silvery 10-o-clock moon shone down through the holes in the roof, projecting dusty, white beams that formed spotlights on the ground.
At least they weren't in pitch darkness.
Jungkook walked around and found some of the broken beams, piling them up in the middle of the huge room.
"Tae, still got that lighter?" He asked, reaching out for it.
The sandy haired boy tossed it to him and soon enough, they had a crackling fire blazing in the middle of the room.
Four of the boys sat around it, hugging their knees. Jungkook was next to Tae, resting his head on his shoulder like he needed support, and Hoseok sat next to Jimin, who was staring into the flames sleepily.
Yoongi however, was away from the group. He walked slowly over to the place he remembered the drama had taken place before.
Red drops stained the brownish concrete, where Hoseok had been shot.
He knelt down and touched the stains, sighing.
What a mess he had gotten everyone into.
"Yoongi Hyung?"
He looked over his shoulder, where Jimin was standing, looking down at him.
He stood up, sighing and looking down at his shoes. He hadn't spoken to Jimin properly since his confession, and Yoongi could still feel the awkward tension between them.
"Jimin... I..." Yoongi started, but was cut off by Jimin wrapping his arms around him, pulling him close and burying he face in the older man's collarbone.
"I don't care." Jimin choked. "I don't care who you were. I don't care what you did. All I care about is right here - right now."
"J...Jimin?"
"Shh." Jimin begged, still hugging him tightly. "Let me have this moment... please?"
Yoongi swallowed, wrapping his arms around the boy's thin frame.
"I forgive you." Jimin whispered.
They were the only words Yoongi had needed to hear...
