Chapter 18 - Get Some Sleep
That night, Jungkook couldn't sleep. He tossed and turned on the couch where Yoongi had spent the night before.
He couldn't leave his Hyung like that - in prison until the day he died...
But he didn't want to be captured either...
He would have to use his intelligence, but right now his brain was a mash. So many things spinning around that he couldn't focus. He didn't even realize Taehyung standing beside the couch.
The fluffy haired boy was wearing a simple white vest and shorts, and he knelt down next to Jungkook's head like Jimin had done to Yoongi.
"Are you ok? You've been rolling around so much the pillow is about to fall off the sofa..."
Jungkook smiled and sat up quietly.
"Sorry... did I wake you?" He asked.
"I don't usually sleep much anyway." Tae said. "What's up?"
Jungkook sighed and ran a hand through his hair as Taehyung sat beside him.
"He must be feeling so alone..." The younger boy sighed, and Tae knew he was referring to Yoongi.
"Listen, Min has been alone for more years than you have lived. Generally, I was surprised he came to get us out. I thought he would enjoy his last few days alone like he has lived the rest of his life, but no. I guess he does care..."
"Yoongi always cared." Jungkook said softly. "From the minute I met him... he cared really."
Jungkook remembered their first meeting in the bar... and how Yoongi threw up on his shoes...
"Ok maybe not the first moment... but around that time." He laughed.
Outside, rain pattered against the pains gently, as quiet as the beating of butterfly wings against the glass, but the taps still echoed around the room.
"Who are you, Taehyung?" Jungkook asked.
Tae looked confused.
"Me?"
"Yes. Who are you really?" The younger repeated.
"You know who I-"
"I want all of it. Who was Yoongi? Who are you?"
Tae sat back on the couch and sighed.
"It is a very long story..."
"We've got all night." Jungkook said quickly. "I am patient."
"Well... I guess it began when I was a kid. I was never popular at school, and was often picked on by the other boys. They said I looked like a girl, and that my voice sounded funny. They also teased me because of my clothes. I never met my mother and my father wasted most of the money on soju, so I never had much to spend. Soon, the teasing turned into bullying... and things just got worse and worse every day."
Tae explained to Jungkook about the day when he was left locked in a cupboard with his hands bleeding after being abused by some of the other school children. He was weak and hurting, and had no phone due to lack of money. All he could do was scream and cry through the door in the hope someone would come and let him out.
"I was 12 years old." Tae sighed.
"Did anyone let you out?" Jungkook asked.
"He found me. Yoongi must have heard my hopeless screaming and come to the door. I can't have been a pretty sight, with red, puffy eyes and bleeding hands, but he was unbelievably calm. He helped me up and took me to the medical room, but left as soon as a nurse came. I didn't see him for a while until a few months later..."
Tae remembered it vividly. He remembered walking to the ICT classroom and seeing Yoongi at a computer, frantically punching the keyboard. He had walked over to see what he was doing, but when he asked, Yoongi had gotten angry.
"One week late, the police came to our school and arrested Yoongi for a suspected hacking attempt." Tae said with a smile in his voice. "That was when I figured it out. When he was let go due to lack of evidence, I wanted to know more about him. I was naturally curious. Slowly, he learnt to tolerate me a little."
The next thing Tae remembered was his 13th birthday.
"He bought me a computer." Tae smiled. "As a kid with nothing, this was like someone had handed me the moon. He asked me if I wanted to work with him, and at first I was nervous my father would find out, but in the end I went with Yoongi. I still didn't know much about him though. All I knew was that he loved computers. I had no idea that he had run away from his family, or that his father used to beat him."
"Yoongi's father beat him?" Jungkook asked.
"Yes. Badly. I was too young to understand at the time, but some days he wouldn't come to school. I thought he was bunking, but when I went round his address, I saw the abuse first hand."
That was a painful memory... the day he had gone round Yoongi's house.
He had heard yelping and sobbing inside, as well as many thumps and cracks. Later, he realised that these had been the thumps of a foot to the ribcage and cracks of a whip.
Yoongi never spoke about that part of his past.
"When he ran away from home, he had nowhere to go. I considered inviting him to come and live with me, but my drunken father was no better than his. In the end, when he turned 15 and I turned 14, we both ran away together.
Some nights we slept on the streets, others we slept in pubs or motels, stopping at internet cafes to hack into places every now and then.
Soon, Yoongi began looking for money... and trouble. He would work with gangs to get money by hacking CCTV and erasing data, but then he would get more money when he handed the tapes into the police.
We were now on the run from criminals as well as the police.
Eventually, when Yoongi was 17, he left. I had no idea why at the time, but it turned out that he had gotten in huge trouble with a gang, and was luring them away from me.
He always cared for me... even at the end when he left without saying goodbye. I remember he left me a computer, because he left on my birthday. It was then I knew he wouldn't be coming back."
Silence filled the room again.
"I...I never knew." Jungkook stuttered, shocked by the boy's story. "Yoongi is so much more complex than he appears on the outside."
"I am the only one who really knows about his past." Taehyung sighed. "Although several others joined and left our group, I was the only one to stay by his side until he had to go."
Taehyung continued his story, totally unaware they had been talking for hours.
"Yoongi never loved anyone." He sighed. "Even I was merely a companion in his adventures."
Jungkook smiled.
"I never thought that person was capable of emotion until..." Jungkook stopped.
"Until?" Tae asked.
"Until I saw the way he looked at Jimin." The younger boy said with a sad smile. "The way he cared for that boy - the way he tried to protect him... The problem was it was too late by the time he realized he was in love - too much had already happened."
Little did they know that behind them, laying on the bed beside Hoseok, the blonde boy was wide awake, listening to their every word. Tears were stinging his eyes as he silently sobbed into his hands.
He didn't care what Yoongi had done.
He didn't care who he was.
He just wanted him back.
He gritted his teeth to silence the heavy sobs and hoped the other two boys wouldn't realize he was awake.
Just then, he sniffed, then gasped as he knew that they would have heard.
"Did you hear something?" Tae asked, looking over his shoulder.
"You're imagining things." Jungkook whispered.
"Jiminie? Hobi? Either of you awake?"
No answer. Jimin was laying as still as possible, barely breathing - not wanting to get detected.
"They are asleep, Hyung." Jungkook confirmed. "And you should be too."
" I told you - I don't sleep much." Tae sighed.
"Neither do I."
"Then what do you do?"
"Play video games, block out the world, listen to music at a level that is probably damaging for my ears. What else can a kid like me do?"
"So I've told you mine and Yoongi's story. What is yours?" Tae asked.
"Its boring as hell." Jungkook sighed,
"So is sitting here not talking." Tae pointed out.
"Fine - say a number" Jungkook ordered.
"133."
"Fine - my life story in 133 words." He smirked. "I was born. I was a nerd at school. I always thought other people were dumb because I was so smart and then I realised how snobbish I was. I moved in with Hobi and Jiminie. We lived together for a few years, then I left. While I was gone, I went to university when I was too young and left within a year because they only taught me stuff I knew. Then I found soju. I would drink during the night and sleep during the day until the police needed me for a case. They would pay me after I finished the job and I would go back to drinking. Then the wanted me on the NASA case and that was when I met the boys again and you know the rest."
"Wow that was actually 133 words..." Tae laughed. "Precise."
"I never thought I would meet the guys again, but I guess Yoongi brought us together again."
There was a brief silence between them, until Jungkook broke it.
"I can't just sit around and watch him rotting in jail..."
"I know..." Tae sighed. "But there is nothing we can do..."
"There is something..." Jungkook. "There is always something we can do."
