Chapter 13 - "Hobi Hyung..."
Thursday 5th September - 8 days till doomsday
At 7:00 the next morning, Jimin, Yoongi, Hoseok and Jungkook were rudely awakened by a loud ringtone.
Jungkook's phone was screaming the red velvet song "ice cream cake" and vibrating so hard it was going to fall off the table. The boy apologized profusely, picking up the phone and leaving the room with a Scarlett blush dusting his cheeks.
The contact on the screen was K.N.J
Namjoon.
Making sure the door was closed, he answered the call, speaking with his soft morning voice into the receiver.
"Hello?"
"Ah! Jeon!" Namjoon's voice said brightly. "I saw the news -You've managed to get them back to Busan then!"
"Yes sir."
"I trust you didn't get badly injured during the train incident." The officer asked in a concerned tone.
"Thanks to Min." Jungkook sighed. "He got me out in time. I have to give it to the idiot - I would be dead if it wasn't for him."
"Speaking of Min - there has been a development." Namjoon explained "Park is no longer-"
"I know about Min." Jungkook interrupted. "I am not that slow, Namjoon. In actual fact, he confessed it to my face!"
"You are as good as they say." Namjoon praised.
"As who say?" Jungkook asked curiously.
"No one... it just sounded cool." Namjoon chuckled. "Anyway, no one there knows your true identity do they?"
"Unfortunately, Min does." Jungkook admitted. "Before I knew he was a hacker, he looked through my phone and saw our previous messages. He hasn't told the others though, which just makes me more and more curious."
"But he doesn't trust you..." Namjoon sighed. "Do the others still think you are innocent?"
"Yes. Park is blinded by our previous friendship. Jung is suspicious by nature, but I think he does trust me more than he trusts Min."
"Good. Listen, at 9pm today, see if you can get them to this warehouse ok? I will text you the address. Myself and Jin will be there waiting."
"Why can you just come to the hotel? Isn't that easier?"
"It is to open. So many places for them to run, and if firearms are necessary, the public could be caught in the crossfire."
Jungkook nodded even though Namjoon couldn't see it.
"I understand, Sir."
"Good. Don't fail us."
The line zipped and went dead.
Jungkook sighed and pressed his hot forehead against the wall. Could he really do this? Could he really lead them to that place like sheep to a slaughterhouse?
Yes - he had to if he wanted to survive. There was no other way out.
He re-entered the room and saw the other 3 boys still half-asleep, stumbling around to get dressed. Jimin was only in his boxers, sleep-walking around the room with a toothbrush in his mouth and hair springing up in every direction; Hoseok was fully clothed, and was texting someone on his phone, and Yoongi was wearing a white tee shirt and yellow boxers, sleepily drying his hair with a towel after rinsing it in the sink.
"How do you guys feel about eating out for lunch? My friend owns a quiet place and never has any customers so we wouldn't be spotted. Also - he offered us 50% off." Jungkook smiled brightly.
"Sure. We haven't had a good meal in days." Hoseok sighed.
"I can make sure Jiminie eats." Yoongi slurred.
So it was decided...
At 11 am, they left the hotel wearing dark clothes and face masks, feeling quite like K-Pop idols trying to protect their identities. Jungkook called a taxi and they all got in: Jimin by one window, Hobi by the other, Yoongi in the middle and Jungkook next to the driver.
Jimin was staring out at the busy Busan streets as they flashed past. He still hadn't really registered that soon, all of this would be gone. The end of the world had always been joked and written about, but this wasn't a prank. The world would be dead in just over a week...
The journey was longer than they thought, and Yoongi even found time to snooze on Jimin's shoulder, which the younger found adorable. He gently stroked his blonde hair which was still slightly damp from its wash this morning.
The taxi pulled up and juddered to a halt, and Jungkook tossed a few won notes at the driver.
"We're here!" He smiled, and they all got out the car...
But this wasn't a restaurant.
Yoongi looked around - the place they were in was abandoned. Dead, dry grassland seemed to stretch on for miles into the distance; an eerie silence filled the air and the only building was a broken barn to their left.
Jungkook his the roof of the "taxi" and it sped off into the distance, leaving the four alone.
"Jeon... What the hell is going on?" Yoongi growled.
"Is this the right place?" Jimin asked.
"I know it doesn't look much, but I told you he doesn't get many customers." Jungkook lied perkily. "Come in. I promise - Jinnie is an amazing cook!"
Just then, a clap of thunder boomed across the sky and raindrops began to hammer down. The wind picked up and Jungkook ran towards the barn urging them to hurry up as the dampness seeped into their clothes.
They were about to follow when Yoongi grabbed Jimin's wrist.
"Something's wrong..." He gulped, shouting over the noise of the wind, but Jimin laughed.
"Don't worry. I trust Jungkookie. Lets go! I am sure I smell spices!" The blonde boy smiled, twisting his wrist free of Yoongi's grip.
"Maybe... we should just go back.." Hoseok suggested, using his jacket to shelter from the rain, but they were almost inside anyway.
Jungkook pushed the door open and let them all in, but Yoongi stopped in the doorway and looked the boy in the eye.
"If this is a trick..." He growled, "I will make you wish you were never born..."
Jungkook gulped as Yoongi continued inside. He was shaking now, with a cold sweat lacing his skin... could he really do this?
The barn was completely empty, save a few cobwebs, and Yoongi immediately turned to Jungkook. The rain hammered down on the roof and echoed across the walls.
"What kind of restaurant is this?" Jimin asked, confused.
Jungkook was about to reply when he was interrupted by a hard fist to his cheek and he fell back onto the concrete floor with a soft cry. Blood trickled slowly from the cut on his face.
"YOONGI?!" Jimin screamed. "Stop! What was that for?"
Yoongi stormed towards the youngest boy, who was still on the ground.
"YOU FRIKKING SET US UP DIDN'T YOU?!" He shouted, kicking Jungkook in the ribs and making him curl up into a ball.
Jungkook couldn't do it...
"I...I'm sorry...I-" Jungkook choked, coughing up a mouthful of blood. "I was going to... tell you..."
Yoongi kicked him again and Jimin ran to hold him back. Blood now stained the patch under the boy's body.
"Stop, Yoongi!" He begged
"Jungkook... what the hell is going on?" Hoseok growled.
The boy tried to speak but Yoongi pulled out of Jimin's grip and knelt beside him, grabbing his collar and shaking him in fury.
"You...You have to run!" Jungkook begged them, choking on blood. "You have to get out of here ...before-"
Just then, the sound of a gun cocking echoed around the barn and all four of them looked over to the back of the barn. Two men, both clad in police uniforms, stood there pointing loaded guns at them.
"It's over, you three..." One of them growled. "Put your hands in the air."
Jimin looked at the policemen and then back at the boy curled up on the floor. Something clicked inside his head and he immediately understood.
"All this time... you lied to us?" He whimpered, tears filling his eyes. "Even though Yoongi saved your life?"
"Jeon was always working for us right from the moment Min met him by chance in Daegu." Seokjin explained. "Hands up."
"I won't." Hoseok growled. "We are innocent! You are looking at the wrong people here!"
"Oh no. The culprit is in this room." Namjoon smirked. "Shall we give away your little secret now, Hacker?"
"What is he on about?" Jimin asked. "Y...Yoongi?"
"Don't be ridiculous." Hoseok sighed. "He couldn't."
Just then, Jungkook ran at Namjoon, grabbing hold of his gun and fighting against his boss.
"RUN!" He yelled out, but they stood frozen.
Yoongi jumped up and aimed a kick at Seokjin, hitting him in the stomach and making him fall down, and the other two ran over to help. It was 4 against 2, but the 2 had guns, and were much stronger...
Suddenly a loud crack filled the air - a gun being fired - and a cry echoed round the building.
There was a thump - Someone falling back onto the ground. The person was choking and clutching a growing patch of blood which was spreading dangerously fast over his once-white T-Shirt.
Pained gasps filled the barn...
"HOBI!" Jimin cried out, but there was nothing they could do - The bullet was already buried deep in his stomach.
Jungkook shoved Yoongi into Jimin whilst battling with Namjoon.
"Get him out of here!" He ordered Yoongi grabbing the older policeman's collar and punching round his cheek, but Seokjin grabbed him and threw him against the wall.
Yoongi ran over to Jimin, who's cheeks were stained with tears already. He was screaming out words, but no one really heard them as Yoongi dragged him away.
Hoseok was lying on the floor, blood pooling around his stomach. His pained gasps were little more than whispers, and were lost in the noise of the room. Jungkook was pinned to the floor by both men, but was still screaming for Yoongi and Jimin to run even in his battered state.
Jimin was desperately struggling against Yoongi, but the boy was too strong, and managed to drag him out of the barn. His sobs rang out and mixed with his screams of grief.
"HOBI-HYUNG!" He cried out as they left the barn, but it was too late.
Both of the boy's fates laid in the hands of the Busan Police.
Once outside, Jimin practically collapsed in Yoongi's arms in a sobbing mess. Tears were rolling down his face and he was crying his Hyung's name.
Yoongi knelt down beside him and wrapped his arms around his shoulders.
"Shhh... its ok Jiminie." He soothed. "Hobi will be alright. He won't die."
But words wouldn't comfort the boy.
Inside the barn, Yoongi could hear Jungkook's pained screams, and Hoseok's raspy gasps. He had to get Jimin to safety before it was too late.
He pulled on his hand and helped him to stand up, wiping his tears away with his finger.
"We have to get away from here ok?" Yoongi begged. "Come on."
"But Jungkook - and Hobi-"
"Would want us to run." Yoongi finished Jimin's sentence. "Come on."
Just then, another gunshot rang out and they found their legs, sprinting away.
Everything flashed back in Yoongi's mind - the look of regret and panic on Jungkook's face; the echo of the gunshot as a bullet ripped through Hoseok's stomach; the cries of grief from Jimin as he was dragged away...
It was enough to bring tears to his own eyes.
Both of their clothes were covered in blood. Yoongi's shirt was mostly drenched in Jungkook's from the violent and unnecessary attack at the beginning, but he had also delivered a few good blows to Jin. Jimin's clothes were spotted with red after he had been pressed up against Yoongi's chest as he was dragged away. They both looked a mess.
After sprinting about 4 miles, Jimin collapsed in a quiet back alley, drenched in blood, sweat and tears.
Yoongi tried to lift the boy and go on, but he passed out from exhaustion next to him.
They simply couldn't go on anymore...
