A Proposal?
The morning sun cast a golden glow over the Bridgerton household as the family gathered in the drawing room. The air was thick with anticipation and curiosity, as each member clutched the latest edition of Lady Whistledown's scandal sheet. Issue XVIII had delivered a bombshell that none of them could have anticipated.
"A Royal Proposal," Benedict read aloud, his voice filled with incredulity. "Scarlett White, our Diamond of the Season, is being considered to become the next Queen of England!"
Eloise's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Imagine that! A Queen in our midst. And to think, she must now find a husband suitable for a throne."
Anthony, the eldest Bridgerton, remained silent, his mind racing. Scarlett White had always intrigued him. She was more than just a pretty face in the crowd; she possessed an inner strength and grace that had set her apart. Now, with the Queen's proposition, she was catapulted into an entirely different league.
"Anthony," Daphne, his sister, said gently, noticing his contemplative expression, "you've been rather quiet. What are your thoughts on this?"
Anthony straightened, a determined glint in his eyes. "It changes everything," he said simply. "If Scarlett is to become Queen, she will need a strong, capable consort. Someone who understands the demands of duty and the intricacies of society."
Colin, ever the joker, raised an eyebrow. "And you believe you are that man, Anthony?"
Anthony shot him a look. "I am the Viscount Bridgerton. Our family is one of the most respected in the ton. If anyone is suited to stand by Scarlett's side, it's me."
"Well," Benedict chimed in, "you'll certainly have competition. Every eligible bachelor in London will be vying for her hand now."
Anthony's jaw set in determination. "Then I shall have to make sure I stand out."
---
Scarlett White was already feeling the weight of the Queen's proposition as she sat in her morning room, the scandal sheet in her hand. The news had spread like wildfire, and she knew that her life was about to change in ways she could scarcely imagine.
Her aunt, the Queen, had been clear. Scarlett needed to find a husband, and quickly. The prospect was daunting. The title of Queen Consort carried immense responsibility, and she needed someone who could not only support her but also match her strength and resolve.
As she pondered over the potential suitors, a knock at the door brought her back to the present. Alice, her maid, stepped in.
"Miss Scarlett, Viscount Bridgerton is here to see you," Alice announced.
Scarlett's heart skipped a beat. Anthony Bridgerton was known throughout the ton for his commanding presence and unwavering dedication to his family. But she new him as the boy who was a sore loser when it came to chess or the little boy who had no rhythm in a dance room.
"Show him in, Alice," Scarlett replied, smoothing her gown and preparing herself for the encounter.
Anthony entered the room, his tall frame and confident stride exuding an air of authority. He bowed respectfully. "Miss White, thank you for seeing me on such short notice."
"Of course, Lord Bridgerton," Scarlett said, gesturing for him to sit. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Anthony took a seat, his expression earnest. "I am sure you are aware of the latest edition of Lady Whistledown's column. The Queen's proposition has undoubtedly placed you in a unique and challenging position."
Scarlett nodded. "Indeed, it has. The weight of this decision is not lost on me."
Anthony leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers. "Scarlett, I understand the gravity of your situation. I came here to offer my support, and if you would consider it, my hand in marriage. Together, we could face the challenges ahead."
Scarlett was taken aback by his directness. "Anthony, this is a significant offer. Why would you want to marry me, given the immense responsibilities involved?"
Anthony's gaze softened. "Because I believe in you, Scarlett. You have shown grace and strength beyond measure. And as Viscount Bridgerton, I am well-versed in the demands of duty and leadership. I know what it takes to navigate the complexities of society, and I believe we could make a formidable team."
Scarlett studied him for a moment, weighing his words. She saw sincerity in his eyes and felt a glimmer of hope. "I appreciate your offer, Anthony. This is not a decision I can make lightly, but I will consider it."
Anthony smiled, a flicker of relief crossing his face. "That is all I ask, Scarlett. Take your time, and know that whatever you decide, you will have my unwavering support."
As Anthony departed, Scarlett felt a mixture of anxiety and excitement. The path ahead was uncertain, but with Anthony Bridgerton by her side, she felt a newfound sense of possibility. The journey to the throne would be treacherous, but perhaps, with the right partner, it could also be a journey of love and destiny.
