Coen is an attractive, tall, and muscular male that appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties. He has a defined chin and jawline, with harsh facial features that can turn softer at times. He had blue eyes with a brown center, and moderately tanned skin. His long hair is a chocolate brown, and tapers off above his shoulders and frames his face. Coen has a mechanical left arm that is more than fully functional, and he usually wears a glove over his mechanical hand and a fingerless glove on his other hand. He wears a specific suit of clothes when he fights, with dark smudges of black paint over his eyes, and a mask that covers up above his nose. When wearing normal clothes, he keeps his glove on his mechanical arm, and wears t-shirts, sweatpants, jeans, and combat boots.

Coen was extremely devoted, loyal, headstrong and patriotic and had a strong moral center. He was a good and close friend to Steve Rogers during their youth; he helped him when he got into fights and tried to cheer him up and look after him when Rogers' mother died. Best friends since childhood, they went through many trials and tribulations together. He was also protective of Rogers, as when he planned to enlist in the United States Army. Coen tried to talk him out of it, as he knew he would die because of his physical condition and poor health.
Due to his advanced physiology however, Coen survived his apparent death, but was found by HYDRA instead. Trained as a living weapon, Coen became a new man so to speak as his memories and identity were constantly being wiped until he was augmented into the perfect assassin, the Winter Soldier. As the Soldier, he is brutal and ruthless with an utter lack of conscience, and follows remorselessly on Hydra's any order.

While he still holds a mostly serious demeanor when he isn't in the clutches of orders, he is still shown to retain a sense of humor. His sense of humor can also be dry at times though. He is only a shadow of his former self.

Artificially Enhanced Physiology: Coen was one of many prisoners of war used in HYDRA's quest to create a killing machine of war. Due to the many experiments performed on him, his physiology is artificially enhanced.

Enhanced Strength: As the Winter Soldier, Coen's physical strength is immensely enhanced to the early levels of superhuman condition by a series of treatments performed on him by HYDRA scientists.

Bionic Arm: HYDRA removed the remnants of Coen's severed left arm and replaced the missing limb with a cybernetic one. The bionic arm gives him extraordinary superhuman strength superior to that of many heros.

Enhanced Speed: Coen's speed is tremendously enhanced beyond the peak of human potential, moving into the early levels of superhuman condition.

Enhanced Durability: Coen's bones and muscles are apparently vastly denser and more resilient than a normal human's.

Enhanced Stamina: Coen's musculature produces far less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human, allowing him to exert himself at peak capacity for hours before tiring.

Enhanced Agility: Coen's vastly enhanced agility is superior to even Olympic gold medalists. He could quickly leap on top of midsize cars in a single bound and do complicated acrobatic flips to avoid gunfire into cover.

Enhanced Reflexes: Coen's reflexes are enhanced to extraordinary levels.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Coen's body is able to heal with extraordinary speed and efficiency, that are beyond of a regular human being, though he is unable to regenerate missing limbs.
