Lillian was usually pretty good at watching where she was going, and this time was absolutely no different. Well, save for the fact that some kid came running into the cafeteria like a hamster on speed and took her out like she was a bowling pin, and he was the ball. She was lucky Hitoshi was the one carrying her tray, or she would have gotten a face full of chicken salad with a side of corn. That still didn't make the experience any more pleasant.
"Lillian!" Both Neito and Hitoshi sputtered out as she went down like a sinking ship, the boy who'd run in here like hell was on his heels rolling off of her in a rush. He was a short dude, with hot pink hair and eyes to match. His pupils were an odd shape. The shape of hearts, which wasn't a good sign in Neito and Hitoshi's opinion. They watched his pupil constrict back into a circle, and he hopped to his feet in horror.
"O-Oh no!" The boy all but screamed, looking down at Lillian. "I think I used my quirk on her?"
"I'm sorry, can you repeat that please?" Neito raised an eyebrow. What did that mean?! Was Lillian going to die? Was she already dead? She was lying there. Albeit, she did seem relatively dizzy as she stared at the floor. Maybe she'd turn into a frog or something? That wouldn't be so bad. Most quirks didn't have permanent effects. And if they did... ah, well, fuck.
"Is she going to be okay?" Hitoshi looked like he was debating dropping their trays of food so he could help her up. Neito was in a state of shock and therefore couldn't bring himself to bend down and hoist her up by her waist. Really, she didn't weight much more than a sack of potatoes. But his mind was having trouble processing all that was going down.
"It lasts twenty-four hours." He said. Based on the cuffs of his uniform, he was a business course student. "She'll just fall madly in love with the first person she sees. If she hasn't looked at anyone already, that is. God, I'm really, really sorry. I have to go. I really have to go."
"Wait, wait, repeat that too." Neito insisted. The boy with the hot-pink hair was already speed walking away. "Repeat that too, dammit!"
"Let me get this straight. Some asshole from the business course just took her out, accidentally used his quirk on her, and ran away? And she's going to be madly in love with the first person she sees? Are you sure?" Hitoshi was checking his facts. None of that sounded right. This had all happened in, what, less than a minute? There's no way this was real. That would be way too convenient for the plot!
"Yes, I think that's what happened." Neito said. Hitoshi's brow furrowed as Lillian began to push herself up, clenching her eyes shut and groaning as she held her head. He immediately bent down and set their trays down, moving to see if she was alright. Neito scrambled for his phone. If Lillian and Hitoshi were about the make out in the middle of the cafeteria, he was going to catch it all on camera.
"Lillian, are you okay?" He crouched down in front of her as she scrubbed at her eyes with her hands. She grumbled something, giving a small nod. He waited anxiously to see what would happen when she opened her eyes. He didn't particularly want her to look at him, but it was better him than anyone else, right? Besides, they were... well, he liked to think they were close. And it would only be for twenty-four hours.
"Y-Yeah, I'm okay. I was j-just surprised. And my eyes feel r-really... weird..." Lillian trailed off, slowly lowering her hands. Hitoshi watched with wide eyes as her pupils morphed into small hearts, similar to the boy's. Time seemed to stop, Lillian gazing right... past Hitoshi...
"There's no fucking way." Neito snorted as he circled, zooming in on Lillian's pupils. "You get right in front of her, and she looks over your shoulder? Who's she even looking at?"
Hitoshi looked a bit panicked and extremely pained. "I'm not sure." He tried to follow her gaze, but ultimately failed. "How's this quirk work, anyway? Is she going to try and jump their bones? We need to watch her carefully if that's the case. Maybe even drag her home." He said. Neito nodded in agreement, zooming back out as a bright smile stretched across Lillian's face.
"Uh oh, I think it's happening. Should we go get a teacher?" Neito asked, shifting the camera to Hitoshi's face. The boy had never looked more paranoid and put out. He kept twisting around to try and see who Lillian's focus had suddenly locked on. He had no such luck. Whoever it was, the quirk didn't have an effect on them. They were just someone minding their own business, eating their own lunch.
"Probably, but we can't leave her alone. We've got to take her with us." Hitoshi didn't think he'd be a very good friend if he let Lillian go down on a stranger in the middle of lunch for every first year to see. If that's what this quirk even did. "Lillian, come with us. We're going to see Mr. Aizawa. You love Mr. Aizawa! Yay! Let's go!"
Lillian hopped up, but didn't appear to be listening. She giddily bounced right past him and Neito, who spun around to see where she'd go. Neito stopped recording and shoved his phone in his pocket, ready to tackle Lillian to the ground if the need arose. He wasn't about to let her lock lips with someone just because she was under the control of some quirk. Even if it would be amusing to see how Hitoshi reacted.
"Shoji, Shoji!" Lillian chirped as she approached the table. Both Hitoshi and Neito blanched. She'd locked her eyes eyes on fucking Mezo Shoji, the six armed, terrifying guy Lillian insisted was a total sweetheart, but who was still intimidating? Half of Class 1-A was at that table, and they all watched as Lillian approached.
"Lillian? Is everything alright?" Shoji looked about as confused as everyone else. Lillian rarely got excited enough not to stutter. Hitoshi and Neito scrambled after her, hoping to go she wasn't about to assault this poor guy. Lillian looked overjoyed that he'd responded, bouncing on the balls of her feet. Hitoshi let out a choking noise as she grabbed one of the six-armed boy's hands in her own. He looked startled.
"I'm in love with you!" She announced happily and without hesitation, causing Ochako's water to spray across the table. Izuku's chopsticks went flying in surprise, and Iida's hand slammed into the table. While Tokoyami didn't spit his water out or anything, it did seep from his mouth. Hagakure seemed to be having a similar reaction.
"Whoa, okay!" Neito laughed nervously as he pulled Lillian away from the wide eyed boy. What was visible of his face was turning red. "Slow down there, tiger!"
"A member of the business course hit her with their quirk by accident. It makes whoever it's used on fall in love with the first person they see for twenty-four hours." Hitoshi grimaced as Lillian squirmed in Neito's grasp, trying her best to get out of it. "I'm afraid she, ah... looked at you... Shoji?"
"That's him." Todoroki didn't look perturbed. Lillian ducked out of Neito's grasp, diving for Shoji. Hitoshi caught her around her middle as she whined, kicking at him as she tried to get to him. The six-armed teen looked extremely taken aback and completely unsure of what he was supposed to do.
"So wait, she's in love with Shoji?!" Ochako gaped. Hitoshi and Neito shared a look. This wasn't good. This wasn't good at all. Of all people, of course it would be Lillian to get hit with the quirk. This was a horrible day! Wow!
"Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?" Lillian looked genuinely confused. Tokoyami snapped his beak shut, muttering something about this being 'a mad banquet of darkness' under his breath. Hagakure brought her hands up to cover her mouth, either to hold in a laugh or because she was shocked. Nobody could really tell.
"Can you come with us, please?" Hitoshi half asked, half begged. "We need to get her to Mr. Aizawa. She's going to follow you."
If nothing else, Shoji could be bait. The six armed teen seemed unsure, but nodded anyway, moving to get out of his seat. He was glad he was wearing a mask for once. Other than his mother, he'd never had a female claim to love him before. Lillian was also a rather cute person in general, and she was also gazing at him with nothing short of sheer adoration in her eyes. Her pupils were, notably, shaped like hearts.
Lillian hummed happily to herself as she grabbed one of Shoji's large hands in her own, beaming up at him. His face went red all over again, and he blinked down at her as though processing. Hitoshi and Neito both groaned. Ochako was taking pictures, and Midoriya, notes. Iida had recovered already and was trying to tell them it wasn't their business and not to pester them.
Shoji couldn't bring himself to look at Lillian as they hastily exited the cafeteria. Her loving stare was simply too odd! Lillian was usually so reserved and quiet, and kind. The kind part hadn't particularly changed, but even if Lillian ever had somehow managed to develop feelings for him... she'd never announce it in such a manner.
Neito and Hitoshi were talking in hushed whispers, shooting glances back at the third member of their meme team. The girl looked extremely content walking next to the tense and uncomfortable Shoji. They couldn't blame the guy. This wasn't like Lillian in the least. That, and having someone stare at you that intently was next-level weird.
"Mr. Aizawa!" Neito threw the door to the teacher's lounge open, gaining the attention of every present teacher. "It's an emergency!"
"Yeah, it's really, really bad." Hitoshi agreed as the dark-haired teacher rose to his feet, along with Present Mic who somehow knew Lillian was involved. He just had a sort of sixth sense, and it had been tingling for the past ten minutes or so.
"What did you two idiots do this time?" Aizawa sighed heavily as he stepped out the door. He was met by the sight of a very red Shoji staring at the ceiling, his eyes closed and arms awkwardly held out at his sides as Lillian hugged him tightly around his middle. The dark-haired man froze as Shoji glanced at him pleadingly, leaning back Lillian tried to pull him closer to her.
"She was hit by a quirk." Neito said, bringing up a finger and carefully pushing Present Mic's mouth shut. "She's going to be in love with Shoji for the next twenty-four hours, give or take fifteen minutes or so."
"It was some kid from the business course. We don't know where he went, but we were hoping you could fix this before she goes down on Shoji here." Hitoshi gestured towards them, clearly uncomfortable. Mic and Aizawa both shared a wide-eyed look. Lillian suddenly let go of the tall, six-armed boy, clapping her hands together.
"I want to marry him!" She seemed to decide.
"No you don't." Mic decided right back. "This isn't happening. I don't think this is happening. This is just a nightmare. A really bad, really vivid nightmare. My precious little baby isn't in love. She doesn't know what boys are."
"Shoji isn't just any boy, though." Lillian insisted as Aizawa tried to erase the quirk. It didn't do anything. Her pupils remained in the shape of hearts. Shoji seemed hesitant and horrified, clearly not comfortable in the current situation, and extremely embarrassed. Lillian held no shame as she turned back to him and captured him in another hug. Mic was now pale and shaking.
"Okay, okay, I'm sure we can deal with this." Aizawa massaged his temples. "Let's just... separate them."
"I'll freeze you." Lillian said happily in response. She seemed almost normal, save for the face that she'd laced her fingers with Shoji, who was sweating profusely. What else could he do or say? His good friend was under a quirk and thus extremely attracted to him. In love with him. It was too weird.
"I'm going to go cry now. Tell me when this hell is over." Mic re-entered the teacher's lounge like he was marching off to his death. Aizawa's eye twitched, and he sighed heavily. He couldn't be mad at Shoji. The boy very clearly didn't want to be in this situation anymore than they wanted to be.
"What do we do?" Neito bit the tip of his thumb in thought. Hitoshi looked lost. Lillian gazed at them, confused. She held Shoji's hand as though it were the most natural thing in the world. Now that she was no longer actively hugging him, Shoji looked slightly better with this newer development, his collected persona seeping back as the shock faded.
"I think we just have to wait it out." Aizawa grimaced, gritting his teeth. The two memesters looked horrified by the prospect. Wait it out?! A lot could happen in twenty-four hours. They were damn lucky Shoji was a stand up guy. He could be more of a douche, but so far he'd been pretty civil. Lillian had never spoken ill of him. Not that she generally had bad things to say about people, but still.
"So I just..." Shoji trailed off awkwardly. Aizawa and Lillian's two best friends stared at him. He stared back, bringing up a hand to scratch one of his heated cheeks. What other reaction was there? His cute female friend was suddenly trying to be his cute girlfriend, and though he knew it the work of a quirk, it was still highly odd.
"I-Is everything okay?" Lillian frowned. "D-Did I do something?"
"Not at all!" Neito exclaimed. "You just... don't actually love... Shoji. You were hit by a quirk that makes you love him."
Lillian looked completely lost. "What are you talking about? I definitely love him."
"No, I'm afraid you don't. The quirk is confusing you." Shoji said calmly. That's right. That's all this was. Confusion caused by a power that went haywire for a moment and effected Lillian. It would pass, just as most other quirk effects did.
Lillian frowned. "N-No, I'm pretty sure I love you." She insisted. "I can make a list of why i-if you want."
"Please don't." Aizawa sighed. "Look, you're just going to confuse her if you try to get her to see that it's a quirk. She has no idea what's happening, and her feelings at the moment are very real. Even if a quirk stirred them up, they are real emotions." He looked grumpy even as he said this.
"So we wait it out?" Hitoshi looked like he might be sick.
"Isn't that what I just said?" Aizawa massaged his temples. "I need coffee."
So that's what they decided to do. They went back to the cafeteria and explained. Lillian sat next to Shoji and talked animatedly to him, their hands interlocked the entire time. The six-armed teen calmed down after a moment and responded kindly to her conversation. He even seemed to be enjoying it as Lillian rambled about his quirk. He was glad to answer any questions she had.
Truth was, Shoji sort of liked the sudden companionship. It was out of nowhere, but it was a little nice. The hand holding was... well, it was new. He wasn't too sure how he felt about it, but talking to Lillian when she was completely comfortable was a new experience that he found he quite liked. The personality she had tucked behind her anxiety was truly something to behold.
She was humorous, and witty. She didn't try to come onto him or kiss him. She just acted as though they were dating-- as though this were all natural. It was one of the weirdest experiences he'd ever had. Hitoshi and Neito lingered around, staring at him intently and watching his every move. He tried his best to be careful and avoid angering them.
Class 1-A loved it. They thought Lillian being openly in love with someone as polite and reserved as Shoji was the sweetest, cutest thing ever. Mina had caught wind of it and came bounding over to ask Lillian why she loved him. She'd seemed confused, telling her a few things about his personality she 'adored' as though stating facts. Shoji had blushed at that. Half because he'd never really gotten such open compliments, and half because she wasn't making the things about him up. She'd pointed out real parts of who he was and claimed to love them.
Lunch ended, and Lillian hopped on one of the table's chairs and planted a kiss right on Shoji's cheek as he stood up. He'd gone rigid as she hopped down and gave him a quick hug, bouncing off towards Neito so they could go to art history. The girls had all giggled, and he'd gotten a few friendly punches and whistles from the guys who'd also come to see the commotion. Neito and Hitoshi were foaming at their mouths.
By the end of art history, Lillian was ready to latch onto Shoji and never let go. Apparently she'd started to cry near the end, which opened up a whole new side of the quirk. She and Shoji couldn't be apart for too long, or Lillian would start to break down. Which wasn't good considering school was going to be over in a couple hours.
Informed of the situation, the teachers had allowed Lillian to pull a desk up next to Shoji's. The six-armed teen found he didn't mind that either. Sometimes their elbows would brush while they worked, and he felt it was fine. He sort of liked it. He'd never been physically affectionate, but that's mostly because there was nobody to be affectionate towards. He'd never take advantage of Lillian under this quirk, of course, but that didn't mean he couldn't enjoy the things that did happen just a little.
Several pictures were taken. Shoji was sure this period of twenty-four hours would haunt him for the rest of his days, and he wasn't sure if that was an entirely bad thing. So far, things had been alright. He'd managed to stop blushing every time she openly admired and complimented him, and was indulging in their conversations.
"Of all of us, Shoji was the first to get a girlfriend." Kirishima joked. "Who knew he had so much game."
There were other teasings like this. Lillian just seemed perplexed by them. Shoji thought that was cute, but he wasn't going to say that. He'd be polite, but he wouldn't dare think of flirting with Lillian while she was in this state.
The end of the day appeared before he knew it, and he found himself walking out the schools gates... with Lillian on his tail.
"You should go home." Shoji told her, slowing down so she could match his pace easier. She reached for his hand. He didn't dare to pull away for fear of accidentally upsetting the girl. He had no idea how this quirk worked, or what might happen if he tried to tell her to stop or go away. Besides, that would be incredibly rude of him anyway.
"I want to study with you! Besides, we both know you need help with English." Lillian teased. He felt himself smile at that, shaking his head a little. The thought of bringing Lillian to his house to study wasn't a bad one. He'd never had a friend over before. Besides, he didn't want her to cry. It was something he would have no idea how to deal with under any circumstances.
"You say that like you don't need help with math." He said lightly. She swatted at him, and he raised two of his hands in mock surrender, smiling under his mask. A part of him was curious to see how she'd react knowing he had a muzzle and not a... well, a face like most people. It normally scared people, and his elementary school had insisted he wear a mask. He had ever since then for fear of startling someone.
He and Lilian chatted the whole ten minute walk to his house. He offered to carry her bag, and she allowed him to with a smile and a bright thanks that made his cheeks dusk pink. He cleared his throat and that point and reminded himself firmly that this was because of a quirk. He wondered if Mr. Aizawa and Lillian's two friends knew where she went. He hoped they weren't too worried. He wouldn't let anything happen to her.
Shoji was an only child, living in a small two-room starter home. His mother had four arms, and could regenerate them if they were cut off. His father, on the other hand, was where he got his muzzle and ability to change his hands into other body parts such as eyes and mouths, or ears. He was a little nervous to bring Lillian over. He hoped his room wasn't too much of a mess.
Lillian looked around curiously as they entered the house. He could hear his mother humming somewhere else in the house, and he hesitated. What did he say? Did he explain the situation? Somehow, he thought that might make things awkward. He also didn't want to risk Lillian hearing and getting confused. The look on her face earlier when they'd tried to explain had been rather upset. He didn't want to agitate her.
"I'm home!" He called into the house.
"Mezo, welcome back! How was y-" His mother froze as her son stepped into view, a girl almost an entire foot shorter than he was popping out from behind him. She was a cute little thing, with round blue eyes and a bright smile. She blinked rapidly, and Shoji awkwardly glanced away, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Hi, I'm Lillian! Shoji and I were going to study, i-if that's okay." She smiled at the woman. Shoji's mother, Mako, turned her gaze onto her son. He had gone a little red in the face. Never had he brought a friend home from school before. Especially not a cute girl. And this girl? She was radiating pure joy. Looking at her way like looking at the sun.
"U-Uh... Yeah, of course, dear. I'm Mako Shoji, but you can just call me Mako... How'd you meet my son?" She blinked. A dumb question, considering the girl's uniform, but she couldn't stop herself! This had never happened before. Her some had finally, finally brought someone home. That someone just so happened to be an adorable girl who seemed completely unfazed by the mutation part of her son's quirk, and her own. That? That was rare.
(I started typing on my phone here for whatever reason so brace for typo city, campers)
"We're in the same class." Lillian looked excited all of a sudden. "Your son has the absolute coolest quirk-mutation combination I have ever seen in my life."
Mako couldn't help but smile and ask if she wanted to stay for dinner.
She and Mezo disappeared down the hall. She could faintly hear them talking, and her son laughing at times. It made her heart swell to know that he was making friends at UA. He didn't mention them much, and she'd certainly never known about Lillian prior to now. She hoped the girl liked Korean food, because that's absolutely what she'd been making before they got here. She didn't have time to change it.
Her husband, Kazuto, got home around the time she finished dinner. She smiled innocently, knowing full well that he had no idea that Lillian was in the house. It would make for a nice surprise, she thought. Or maybe not. She supposed to be finding out soon enough. She was just about ready to set the table and call the kids out. She momentarily she momentarily wondered if Lillian had ever seen her son's face. If not... how exactly would she react?
"You know I haven't seen Shoji all evening. What is he up to?" Kazuto frowned. Mako smiled brightly.
"Dinner!" She called into the house. Kazuto simply raised an eyebrow, clearly wondering just what she was hiding from him. Because it was pretty obvious by the look on her face that she was keeping something to herself.
"Wow, that smells delicious!" Kazuto froze as a female voice echoed from down the hall. A freckled girl with bright blue eyes and a cheerful smile appeared, followed closely by Mezo. She was tiny compared to him, about a foot or so shorter. She looked at him with zero hesitancy, not at all perturbed by his odd appearance. "You must be Shoji's dad! Hi, I'm Lillian, his friend from class."
"Kazuto..." He introduced, blinking at her as she plopped down fearlessly across from him. Mezo swiftly took his own seat next to her, clearly smiling under his mask. Mako herself grinned a she served the food, evidently incredibly smug due to Lillian being here. The girl thanked them profusely for allowing her to stay for dinner, though she didn't immediately touch her food. Instead, she turned and stared at Mezo.
He nervously fiddled with the edge of his mask. His parents watched with definite anticipation, wanting to see how Lillian and would react Shoji's muzzle. It wasn't all that different from his father's, but it was definitely more pronounced and... Just there, they supposed.
He finally pulled it down, earning a squeal from Lillian. Both Mako and Kazuto turned towards her, startled and afraid that she might be disgusted. But that's now why she'd made the noise, no. She gazed at Mezo with her hands in her cheeks and awed eyes.
"You're the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life."
Mako decided she really liked Little.
Dinner passed with little fanfare. They talked, chatted, got to know Lillian a little better. It was all in all a really good evening. Shoji smiled more often than he had at previous dinners and was more talkative, and Lillian was not afraid to engage in conversation with her classmate.
Shoji walked her back home to Shinso's. The goodbye was incredibly hard for her. She was very hesitant and definitely did not want to part ways, but she did anyway, with a hug and another kiss on the cheek that made Shoji go red and half wish this weren't the result of some Business kid's quirk. Ah, plot. What a wonderful yet horrifying thing
Lillian cried herself to sleep, which was pretty disturbing for Hitoshi who did try to distract her with vines after having a heart attack over the fact that she'd vanished after school. Memes just didn't work like they usually did. Lillian simply wasn't herself when she was fake in-love with someone.
The next day she got up early to go meet Shoji, and he was, luckily, there. He had shown up earlier to try and meet up with her because he knew she'd be in some amount of distress. He didn't expect to be nearly tackled to the ground by a 5'3" ball of energy and tears. His face had immediately gone red, and he awkwardly patted her back as she hugged him and rambled about how much she'd missed him.
The quirk's effects seem to fade the closer and closer they got to lunch. It was a little sad to see, as Shoji had enjoyed the companionship to some extent. It was sort of depressing, and he found he'd be missing it. It was a little painful to know that everything Lillian had said about him was the result of a stray power. That they'd go back to being regular friends who only sometimes talked, and who didn't study together at one another's houses.
He liked Lillian. Not romantically, he didn't... think, but seeing a part of her personality had made him want to know her more. He wanted her to be comfortable around him like she had been these past twenty-four hours, and knowing that was going to go away stung. Lillian was just so bright, and she wasn't afraid of him or his appearance. She took him for who he was and how he looked. He had a feeling that wasn't a part of the love quirk. That that was who she just so happened to be.
Aizawa was all but glaring daggers at him the whole day, and Hitoshi and Nieto didn't seem too happy with him either. He couldn't blame them. They were not only protective over Lillian, but he'd let her come to his house the other day, and apparently they hadn't known about it. That was partially on him for not checking of she told someone. Knowing she was under the influence of a quirk, he should have insured people knew of her location.
Lillian became more and more lucid to the situation as time passed. She was able to move back to her seat, and the effects generally just tapered off. She was very clearly very embarrassed and felt quite awkward about it. He couldn't blame her for that either. He would feel awkward too were he in her shoes.
Still, he was saddened, but he knew this was going to happen to begin with, so he had no right to be upset. He knew that it wasn't going to last, and he wasn't sure he'd wanted it to. It was clearly not real, and if he was going to have something with her, he wanted it to be... authentic.
He was surprised when Lillian pulled him aside after school. He hadn't expected it and had thought she might avoid him. He was glad that didn't seem to be the case, of course. He didn't want their friendship to be over because of some tension caused by a quirk accident.
"I-I know I said a-a lot of stuff wh-while under that quirk, a-and I'm really sorry you got wrapped up in it." She apologized meekly. While back to her shy self, he now felt he could better see who was hiding under that quieting shell.
"It's alright, Lillian. I understand." He assured smoothly, because it was right, and he did understand.
"B-But I enjoyed p-parts of it too! I-I liked studying, a-and your family was so nice. A-And your quirk really is amazing." She blurted out, stunning him. He blinked rapidly. "Y-You're a great person, and the compliments I gave on your personality were true. I-I really meant them, and still do."
"I... see." He smiled. He hadn't expected this, but this was far better than anything he could have imagined happening. "I'd like to remain good friends as well. Having you over to study was quite fun."
Lillian brightened, looking relieved. "I hoped we can do it again s-soon!" She exclaimed. "I-I have to go train, but Shoji?"
He blinked down at her, still smiling. He felt a weight had been lifted off his very shoulders at her words. It was so good to know that things weren't ruined between him and Lillian, and may even get better with time.
"Yes?" He asked, tilting his head. Lillian flushed.
"F-For the record, y-you have really warm hands... A-A-And you are v-very cute." She sputtered out before turning around and fleeing like a bat out of hell's gate. Shoji was glad. He wasn't sure what he'd say if she saw how red his face got, and how wide his smile stretched beneath his mask.
