Chapter 64
Third person pov
It wasn't how anyone expected the first match to go, but that's how the mafia works. Lillian and Neito all but tackled Hitoshi to the ground when he came up to where they were sitting. Lillian had left Yeet to rest in her cleavage. Yes, she knew it wasn't the best place for him, but at least he'd be warm. It was whatever. If anyone made any inquiries about it, she'd just act offended enough that they apologized for bringing it up. Well, that's what she liked to think she'd do. In reality, she'd probably just cry until they got uncomfortable and speed walked away.
Hatsume and Iida were against each other now, but it really wasn't much of a... fight, per say. Just Hatsume advertising her gear for any support companies watching. Poor Iida looked so lost and confused. Lillian felt nothing but pity for him. She didn't know much about the Support Course, but apparently they were a force to be reckoned with. Especially Mei Hatsume, who was apparently the most insane member in the whole thing. Class 1-H had suffered many explosions and rogue projectiles due to her.
More than once she'd walked past 1-H's classroom, and more than once she'd seen it with its door blown off. Faint screams she sometimes heard during class told her that things were pretty serious, as were the massive explosions akin to Bakugo's that would at times rock the building. People had gotten pretty used to them now, but it was still relatively concerning.
"I hope Midoriya doesn't accidentally kill himself trying to help out Todoroki. He looked pretty serious when we appointed him as the therapist." Neito had a Endeavor-themed notebook with the eyes scratched out and was scribbling away about their plans to take said man down. A little creepy, but it was the only one he could find that they were selling here in the stands. He'd written the word "ANNIHILATION" in bold black marker across the front. Hitoshi and Lillian wondered if they should get him mental help too.
They needed to know the depth of Todoroki's trauma so they could help him, or a professional needed to. Just so long as they could get something on record, perhaps. The fact that he was refusing to use his fire was concerning. Lillian wondered if Midoriya would try to do something about that. The half-and-half boy had told Midoriya what he told them-- he would never use his father's power. That seemed to really bother Izuku.
"Y-Yeah, if he overdoes it..." Lillian winced at the thought. She wasn't best friends with Midoriya or anything, but he was best friends with Ochako and Iida, so she'd found herself sucked into a conversation with him more than once. During training, he was probably the most determined and driven one there. Not to mention self destructive. Hell, he'd blown himself up just to place in the top five during the first portion of the festival.
"How many bones do you think he's going to break? Should we be starting a betting pool? We could make some serious profit off this." Hitoshi was only half joking as he said this, as Lillian had recounted some of his risky training feats in the past. Class 1-B was sitting as far from them as humanely possible, eyeing Lillian who they'd just seen drop a snake down the front of her shirt, Neito who was practically foaming at the mouth muttering about how to bring down the Number Two hero, and Hitoshi, who was trying to figure out how many bones Midoriya would break. They were quite the trio.
"At least five of his fingers. He may tr-try using them twice, maybe. He tries to use up an entire hand before he moves to another. He'll probably break an arm as well... a-a leg, too." Lillian trailed off thoughtfully. It was true that he flicked a single finger rather than punching at first. Why break more bones than you have to, right? It was sort of terrifying to watch, but at least he had... adapted somewhat. She really hoped he got a hold on his quirk soon.
"Pain tolerance who?" Neito chimed.
"You said it." Hitoshi snorted. Lillian stood up, yawning. She really needed to pee. And get more eye drops. She should have just begged her teacher for the bottle. The girl had little self confidence anyway, so there was literally nothing to lose. She barely knew what dignity was at this point. She was too anxious to have such a thing.
"I'll be back. I n-need eye drops and a restroom break." Lillian said, swatting the side of Neito's head lightly to try and make sure he'd heard and didn't freak out when he realized she was gone, as he had done before. He only grunted it response, marking out something about water boarding. Lillian wasn't sure she wanted to know. She still felt really tired. The freckled girl was seriously considering asking Mr. Aizawa where he got his sleeping bag.
"I'll come with you. I almost pissed myself on stage earlier." Hitoshi said. Neito looked up, eyebrows raised. Lillian stared blankly. "His elbows are intimidating!"
"S-Sero is just a tape dispenser with feelings. He's really nice!" Lillian assured quietly. It was true. Sero was a jokester, but he was a decent guy. He and Kaminari talked a lot about what girls in class were hottest, touching mostly on Momo and Tsuyu, but he wasn't a pervert like Mineta was. He was... well, a typical teenage boy. Lillian wouldn't mind being friends with him if she could ever bring herself to squeak out more than one or two words in his presence, and the presence of others she wasn't well acquainted with.
"It's the feelings that scare me." Hitoshi whispered. Neito circled something about spying and installing cameras in the Todoroki dojo to try and catch some of the abuse on camera, humming to himself cynically. Hitoshi and Lillian both shared a concerned look with one another as they walked off in search of a restroom. Perhaps they shouldn't let Neito plan too much...
"You're going to be up against Iida then, right?" Lillian tilted her head at him. He nodded, sighing heavily. From class 1-A, Tenya Iida was a marvelous opponent. Though he did tend to be rather chatty, so Lillian had hope that Shinso would be able to get him to respond to a question. Especially if it was one out of nowhere. He could even ask a question about the rules, and Iida would drop into a long lecture and probably cite a few sources while he was at it. Lillian swore the boy talked in essays at times.
"He seems like a- wait." Hitoshi grabbed her shoulder, stopping her from turning to corner. Lillian's ears pricked as a disgustingly familiar face caught her ears soon after. Immediately, her confusion dropped into a grimace. Ah, it was her lucky day, wasn't it? Two chance encounters with the flaming shit bag that was Endeavor.
"You're acting disgracefully, Shoto." Endeavor growled at his son. Hitoshi and Lillian looked to one another and nodded. Yeah, this shit wasn't happening on their watch. They didn't have Todoroki Protection Squad shirts yet, but when they did... Endeavor was in for a world of hurt. If he didn't know what was hitting him now, just wait until they had the power of matching clothing on their side.
Hitoshi darted around the corner, Lillian close behind. The purple-haired boy almost ran right into Shoto, who stepped to the side just in time with confusion plastered across his face as Lillian grabbed his arm and tugged him back around the corner with her. Hitoshi let out a very loud gasp. "Oh my god, are you on fire?!" The boy's voice shrieked as Lillian dragged the somewhat lost Shoto away from the scene of the crime.
Endeavor's eye twitched, "Y-"
"Go away." Hitoshi's panicked look dropped completely, his voice bland and annoyed. Blankly, Endeavor turned around and began to walk away with no questions asked. Lillian held her breath and waited, patting Shoto's back comfortingly. The half-and-half boy didn't seem particularly distressed, but he was certainly confused. He'd been about to blow a gasket at his father when Lillian and Hitoshi skidded around the corner.
"Don't worry, Todoroki. Hitoshi will make the bad man go away." Lillian assured. Shoto couldn't do much other than nod, brows furrowed and lips pressed tightly together as he tried to comprehend what was happening. He actually quite appreciated the intervention, though he wasn't sure why they cared so much. He'd brushed their initial reactions off as shock. The Number Two hero was a scumbag, and anyone who learned that would be taken aback. But it seemed they'd been... serious about wanting to help him.
"He's gone, for now. Let's bounce." Hitoshi appeared. Shoto blinked at him. "I would just tell him to turn himself into the police, but they wouldn't take anything he said under the influence of a quirk. Don't worry though. We'll work something out"
"Woke." Lillian agreed. They stopped by the bathroom. Not the one they'd been heading to, but whatever worked, worked. "I'll be back."
"Shoto, stay here." Hitoshi agreed, going to the teen's side. "Even better, come wait in here. I don't know how long your dad is going to stay under my control, but I know he's not going to be happy when he gets out."
Seeing his point. Shoto stepped in after him. Lillian was relieved. They should honestly have some sort of Endeavor watch to keep him away from Shoto when at all possible. As if they'd let him go home with that scumbag after the festival. It was pretty obvious the only choice they had was to force him to Hitoshi's house and send Chad to sneak in and get as many of his belongings as possible. The only issue was that... well, kidnapping was illegal. Endeavor wouldn't hesitate to come hunt his 'prized possession' down.
Lillian did her business quickly. She heard Mic announce the end of Iida and Hatsume's... advertisement. Iida had made it through to the next round, which wasn't a big surprise. He was one of the most capable people in their class by far. Speed was a big part of being a hero. You had to have maneuverability and wits, both of which the teen had an abundance of. She prayed he wouldn't rush Hitoshi when their match came up, and gave the tired teen time to ask something.
"Hey, Lillian." Hitoshi said as she stepped out. Shoto was still here, standing next to him awkwardly. Lillian was glad they hadn't scared him off. "I'm going to take him to the gate. His match his next."
"Y-Yeah, good luck, Todoroki!" Lillian smiled at the half-and-half boy, who nodded, still a little lost. Though, he did seem to be adjusting to their new behavior somewhat. Hitoshi gave her a thumbs up before turning to lead Todoroki to where he needed to go. The poor guy looked like he was trying to do advanced Algebra all in his head. He had absolutely no idea what to do, seeming like maybe he was contemplating running. But like... contemplating it less than before. A win.
She darted for the announcer's box, hoping to god she wouldn't run into a pissed off Endeavor on the hunt for his son during her trek. "On to our third match, everyone!" Mic announced. "Coming in fourth place in the obstacle course, we have Izuku Midoriya of Class 1-A, the Hero Course!"
Lillian peeked through the door, wincing. She certainly wasn't about to interrupt, but she didn't want to miss even a second of Izuku and Shoto's match either. She wasn't sure if Izuku would try to bring his role in the newly formed Todoroki Protection Squad into his fight or not. If he didn't, it wasn't a big deal, and she certainly wouldn't blame him. This was the Sports Festival! It was a serious part of their futures, and Endeavor and Todoroki weren't going anywhere. But if he was...
"Way too powerful for his own good, we have Shoto Todoroki, also from Class 1-A! This student got in on recommendations, and rightfully so! Coming in fifth place in the obstacle course, this is sure to be a riveting match!" Mic spun around in his chair, eyes landing on her. She immediately tensed, cheeks flushing as she glanced at Aizawa. Mic grinned at her, nudging the dark haired man with his foot as he turned towards back towards his duty as an announcer.
"Is everybody ready?!" Mic shrieked while Aizawa turned, brows raised. He spotted Lillian and couldn't help but smile a little, carefully slipping an arm from his sling and reaching into his pocket. Lillian deflated with relief, giving her teacher a small smile. After this she and her friends were sure to force him into a group hug while profusely thanking him for having faith in them and training them for so long. He'd probably kill them all for it, but that wouldn't stop them.
"Alright!" Mic threw his arms in the air. "Begin!"
Lillian caught the bottle and dripped some of the liquid in her eyes as fast as possible. Aizawa watched her, once against feeling fond of the girl. He could remember when he was her age, also becoming addicted to the relief the eye drops bought. Even today he found himself tearing through bottle after bottle. He wondered if she'd be the same way. He'd have to tell her where to buy them. For when he... wasn't her teacher... anymore...
He frowned. For now, he had custody of Lillian. But what about after? If he fostered her, she'd still be released from him at the age of eighteen. Adoption would make him her father legally. He didn't want to think she'd just go on with her life and never speak to him again if he didn't adopt her now when she was still a minor, but... well, what if she didn't? What if the hero life swept her up and they fell out of contact? It's not like he ever talked to any of his previous graduated students. If he didn't do anything, Lillian would probably... she'd probably end up the same way.
Lillian screwed the lid back on quietly, not wanting the microphone to pick up any noise she may make. She moved to toss it back when Aizawa shook his head, nodding towards the door soon after and halting her actions. Unsure of herself, Lillian looked down at the small bottle in her hands. He stared at her patiently as she seemed to mull it over, looking up with a small smile.
"Th-Thank you." She whispered quietly, earning another nod. She darted from the announcer's box, eyes jumping from monitor to monitor in the halls broadcasting the fight. So far not much had happened, Todoroki having shot an enormous amount of ice at Midoriya only for him to flick a finger and break it all apart, leaving Todoroki to grit his teeth. It was looking like it was going to be a match to see who would get tired first, from the looks of it. Todoroki was already beginning to be covered in frost. One of UA's camera's crept closer, hoping to pick up some audio.
"An endurance match, huh?" Todoroki's voice rang out, muffled and faint. The camera zoomed in on his face, another zooming in on Midoriya's. Lillian slid back into 1-B's seating area, nearly running into Kendo in the process as she jumped back into her chair next to Neito. Hitoshi was on the other side of the blonde, leaning forward in his seat as the two teens below readied themselves.
"That's right!" Midoriya responded. "You see... I've promised to help you, Todoroki! As your new therapist!"
Hitoshi started to choke on nothing but air, while Lillian almost slammed her face into the chair in front of her. Todoroki stopped completely with clear hesitation in his eyes. The stadium was completely silent, thick confusion and question swimming around in the air. Lillian could almost picture the question marks drifting about above the crowd.
"My... what?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bakugo began to cough wildly when Izuku announced his appointed role in the protection squad, clenching his eyes shut. That idiot! He would probably lose this damn match trying to help the boy, too. That meant this Icyhot Protection Squad bullshit was definitely serious. He was oddly okay with that, even if it wasn't exactly how he wanted to spend his time. Though, simply trying to tell CPS probably wouldn't do much anyway. They'd be paid off or thrown off by Endeavor's charming hero personality. The one he could surely pull out when he wished to look particularly noble. They were going to have to bring him down themselves.
"Did he just say his therapist?" Kirishima questions, face the definition of bewilderment. Everyone else had similar reactions, though that couldn't be blamed on them. Midoriya and Todoroki resumed fighting, forcing the cameras to backpedal if they wanted to avoid being destroyed. That also meant they couldn't easily pick up on what was being said as easily, though Midoriya and Todoroki were still clearly exchanging words.
"Who knows. Midoriya is a pretty weird guy, ribbit." Tsuyu croaked, not seemed at all fazed by the green-haired boy's claim. He had been muttering essentially since the finals started, which honestly hadn't been that long all things considered. A few murmurs of agreement circulated through class 1-A when they realized just how out there the freckled boy just so happened to be. A head popped over the stone divider separating them from the other hero class.
"Hey, Bakugo." It was Neito Monoma, the one Lillian had been working with since the first event. Bakugo's eye twitched. "How do you feel about exploding someone's-"
He suddenly froze completely. Many recognized this to be Lillian's quirk as someone pulled the petrified teen away. They all stared in mild shock as Lillian pulled herself up, smiling sheepishly with a flushed face as Neito disappeared from their line of sight. "S-S-Sorry a-about him." She sputtered out, giving a last nervous smile before allowing her to drop back to the ground. They all heard faint arguing on the other side.
"...That was weird." Jiro noted.
"I'm not surprised." Ojiro admitted. "Nothing in this school surprises me anymore."
Nobody could really disagree with that.
Lillian and Hitoshi shoved Neito between them before unfreezing him. "-penis." The boy finished his previous statement before blinking, looking around at his surroundings in question. Hitoshi patted him sympathetically on his shoulder while Lillian simply sighed, shaking her head. Below them, Midoriya was shouting something at a wide eyed Todoroki. One of the cameras risked rolling forward at the command of whoever the controller was.
"It's your power!" Midoriya screamed, eyes desperate. "It's your power, not his!"
"Note to self: don't give Midoriya anything potentially dangerous to do." Hitoshi mumbled as fire exploded around Todoroki, sending a wave of heated air crashing over them. Lillian shielded her eyes, which were dry enough as it was, and Neito started to rip a page of his notebook out. Probably something about Todoroki's previous reluctance to use his quirk.
"H-He makes everything dangerous." Lillian sighed.
"At least he's effective. It's been what, ten minutes? Less?" Neito asked. He gestured his pencil towards them. "Look at him, he's smiling! Midoriya should be getting paid for this."
"Does anyone have a telescope?" Lillian asked distractedly as Endeavor, across the stadium, stepped forward with a wild grin. She didn't want to accidentally freeze the crowd, but she didn't want Endeavor to ruin this for his son either. Hitoshi snatched the paper Neito had torn out and rolled it up, shoving it into her hands. She held it up quickly.
She made the hole at the farther end smaller. Small enough that only a pinprick was visible to her as she stuck her tongue out in concentration, taking a deep breath. Closing one eye, she blinked the other as her vision was limited to a small portion of Endeavor's costume. Hitoshi and Neito let out sighs of relief as she slowly lowered the piece of paper, staring across at the fiery scumbag. The Flame Hero had frozen on his way down the staircase. Success.
"Good job." Hitoshi grinned over at her. Lillian opened her mouth to reply, only for blood to pour out instead. Her two friends stared at the crimson liquid dumbfounded, and she did the same, blinking at it as it coated her fingers.
"Holy shit. She needs some milk." Neito said. TetsuTetsu looked over at them, doing a double take and letting out a shriek when he spotted the waterfall of blood pouring from Lillian's lips. He tried to grab Kendo's shoulder, but she swatted him away as she watched the fight. Lillian began to wipe her hands off on her uniform again. Hopefully Yeet wasn't disturbed.
Below in the stadium, several cement walls sprung from the ground as Midoriya and Todoroki ran at one another. Lillian shook her head when Izuku shot off the ground, leg most definitely breaking in the process. The power of Todoroki's flames was extremely overwhelming. To have such an ability and not be able to use it because of a something your father did to you... because of who he was... god, it had to hurt.
Hitoshi braced himself as the two males approached, the large slabs of stone crumbling into nothing as Todoroki's fire and Midoriya's punch came into contact with them. There was a flash as an explosion went off. The cool air heated too quickly, and Midoriya's punch did nothing to help as it added overwhelming pressure.
Lillian dropped control over Endeavor as wind ripped at her ponytail. She squinted against the dust flying through the air, already reaching for the eye drops in her uniform's pocket. The pain pulsating in her stomach was worth it. Endeavor hadn't gotten a chance to shut Todoroki down before he could even begin. So even if it felt like something was ripping her up from the inside, she'd do it again in a heartbeat.
As the dust cleared, everyone was left stunned to silence for a second time. Only it wasn't because of something Midoriya said, no. The display of raw power was what had shocked everyone to their cores and left them to sit and gape as their minds processed the monstrous sight they'd just bore witness to.
"Wow." Hitoshi referenced. Lillian and Neito nodded in silent agreement.
"Jeez, I can't see a thing! Is the match still going on or what?" Mic questioned, finally able to find words. Lillian tilted her head back, applying more eye drops. Asshole or not, Endeavor had gotten to the Number Two spot somehow. Holding him had been excruciating. The pain was so much it had been nearly numbing. If it hurt this much to freeze Endeavor, what would All Might be like? She'd probably choke up an entire lung. She took some shaky breaths, willing herself not to cry as the pain lessened from numbing to throbbing.
"I see him." Neito's eyes widened. Hitoshi leaned forward.
"There!" Midnight said, finally regaining her balance. The attack had blown her right off her stand. "Midoriya is... out of bounds! Todoroki wins! He advances to the second round!"
The entire upper left side of Todoroki's uniform had been burned off, showing just how ripped he was. The crowd exploded into a roar of cheers. Hitoshi poked at his own stomach sadly as medics rushed out to Midoriya's side. Lillian contemplated sprinting off to the infirmary to go see how Izuku was. Ochako and Bakugo's match was next, and that was something she didn't want to miss. Recovery Girl would also scream if she saw this much blood on her, especially seeing as her match hadn't even happened yet...
"You can go see him later, Lillian. He may need surgery. He did re-use already broken bones." Hitoshi winced at the mere thought, and Neito nodded as well. To know Midoriya would go so far for a friend only inspired them to work harder for Todoroki. Neito began burning through more pages of his notebook, referencing Mei Hatsume and wondering if they'd be able to go to her for some sort of surveillance tech. Hitoshi pulled out his phone to call his parents.
"Oh my god, are you okay?" Kendo finally spotted Lillian, who was still drenched in blood. Lillian blinked, looking down at herself. She'd wiped most of it off her hands, but it was still caked on her chin from where it had bubbled past her lips. Across the stadium, Endeavor looked a bit disoriented, but still satisfied. He thankfully didn't try to call anything down to his son as he was escorted by medics to ensure he was okay.
"No, she's not okay! That's what I've been trying to tell you!" TetsuTetsu was literally shaking. Lillian offered a hesitant smile.
"O-Oh, it's j-just blood." She assured. They deadpanned at her for stating the obvious.
"She gave it for a good cause." Hitoshi promised as he brought his phone up to his ear. Lillian was glad she wasn't within eye shot of Mr. Aizawa. He'd probably be upset at her for using her quirk to such a degree, and Mic would possibly scream if he saw. Hitoshi's phone stopped ringing, and Neito and Lillian looked to him as his parents picked up, "Yeah, dad? Get the other bed."
"At this rate you may as well open an orphanage." Neito sighed, already beginning to think about how they'd possibly be able to swing Todoroki staying with them. His father would no doubt come after him. Hiding him could work, but only if he switched locations every so often to avoid being found.
"Todoroki isn't an orphan." Hitoshi noted.
"Yet." Lillian whispered. Neito coughed to hide his shameless laugh.
People swarmed the area to clear the ice and chunks of rubble for the next match, and Lillian felt Yeet shift in her bra. She'd almost forgotten he was there, which of course caused her to jump about a foot in the air. Hitoshi was already in a deep conversation with his mom and dad about why they needed Todoroki to move in. Mihoko was chanting something about another child in the background. It wouldn't be long before Hajime folded and just let it happen.
"I think we need Mic for this." Neito held his notebook out at a distance as though it would help him see the bigger picture somehow. "Publicity is important."
"Present Mic's show isn't super popular, though. We need numbers. Some of his fans tune in, but we need more than that." Hitoshi agreed, eyes scanning the notes as his parents debated over the phone about Todoroki. He hadn't given anything away that Todoroki wouldn't be okay with, as he had been sworn to secrecy. He needed to remain the trustworthy piece of garbage he claimed to be.
"T-Take that back." Lillian gasped. Neito held up his hands in surrender, and Hitoshi winced a little. They sometimes forgot how much Lillian adored Mic and his radio show.
Bakugo waited idly for his name to be announced so he could walk out onto the stadium, glaring at the ground as Icyhot and Deku's match replayed in his mind. He'd have to give it to the Nerd, he had gotten the guy to use the other half of his quirk. Bakugo understood why Icyhot hadn't wanted to use it to begin with. Who the hell would, with a parent like that who had the same power? He'd have done the same damn thing.
His eyes moved to where Class 1-B were seated. For some reason, Lillian looked like she was covered in blood all of a sudden despite the fact that she'd been fine when she popped her head over the wall. He thought he'd seen Endeavor walking towards the railing before the Nerd's hit made contact with Icyhot's attack, so maybe she'd frozen the Number Two hero so he wouldn't interrupt? His lips pulled into a smirk. Gutsy.
"Wow, that was some match! Right, Eraser?" Mic's voice echoed through the stadium as the last of the rubble was wheeled from the grounds. The crowd's chatter died down slightly, talk of Midoriya and Todoroki's fight fading into the background. Bakugo took a deep breath. If Round Face got too close and managed to touch him, it was all over. He needed to stay on his toes.
"Sure, Mic." Aizawa sighed. He was anxious to see how Lillian would do against Kaminari later. If he could discharge his electricity fast and bright enough, it could theoretically blind her long enough for him to act. But it took him a second to get it up to such a glowing voltage. If Lillian panicked or hesitated, it could definitely cost her the match. That being said, he had a lot of faith in her. He fully expected her to make it to the final round, even if she ran into a few roadblocks along the way.
"Alright, alright! From the Hero Course's Class 1-A, we have Ochako Uraraka!" Mic announced with flourish. The girl walked out, eyes steely with determination that made Aizawa grin. Bakugo shook out his hands. "Also from class 1-A, we have Katsuki Bakugo, who placed first in the entrance exam! Let's get this ball rolling!"
The crowd erupted into a fresh set of cheers, and Bakugo grinned. He'd make it to the end of this, and that was a promise.
