Chapter 60

To be clear, Lillian's parents DID know she had a quirk of some kind, but not what exactly it did. They didn't know Aizawa was her parent until she entered UA. The had obviously assumed her quirk was erasing other people's when they saw the hair and the eyes thing in relation to Aizawa and his quirk, hence why they were still shocked when it was revealed to be freezing things. Some people are like "KDHLDS THEY ALWAYS KNEW IT WAS AIZAWA" and I can confirm that they didn't, though they did hide it for about a month or so give or take-

I also changed some of the team stuff up so if you're like "ThEy WeReN't On A tEaM" I already know don't worry-

Third person pov

Mayako paid well over three-hundred dollars for the best, fastest, and safest shipping. She made sure the box was packaged carefully, and got it its very own seat on a first class flight right to Japan. Not having Aizawa's address was an issue, but the post office said they could simply ship it to the school with his name on iy. That would have to do, even if it wasn't ideal. She wanted it to go straight into his hands.

She hadn't known him well when she was in UA. She'd checked up on him some throughout the years, eyeing his hero career, and looking for signs that maybe, just maybe he'd found Aiyako somehow. He was an honorable man. He didn't care for cameras or the media, and didn't do interviews if he could help it. He often times worked closely with the police force, helping them to apprehend the villains that slipped under bigger heroes' radars.

The post office had a small tv mounted to the wall above the counter. A few people were crowded under it, watching the festival. Aiyako's face, or Mayako supposed her name was Lillian now, shined back at her. She felt sick to her stomach. Not because of Lillian, but because of what she herself had done. She had been young and out of a job, with no high school education under her belt... but to abandon a child? How could she possibly call herself a mother?

So what she'd been having a hard time. That had been her baby. Her precious, lovely little girl who was the entire world. Panicking because she couldn't pay a bill didn't justify leaving her there. Lillian had been well fed, and they'd had a place to sleep at night. Not much, but it was something. They'd had something, and were making it. She could have taken... taken out a loan, or applied for a credit card.

She tore her eyes away from the scene, smiling  weakly to the woman taping up her package. She'd make things as right as she could make them. She wasn't going to try and enter Lillian's life, or force her entire family over to Japan. She had lost her right as Lillian's mother the second she stepped foot out of that hospital without her, and she knew that well and good. That didn't mean she had to stand by, though. She'd do what was in her power... even if that wasn't much.

Mic's mind was abuzz. Was there a book on how he could possibly do this? He desperately wanted to tell Aizawa what he knew. This was deeper than a contest to be Lillian's favorite, or to be the "better dad." This was his best friend's real, legitimate child. And Shota didn't know it. Mic felt like screaming. How did he tell Aizawa? Did he do it softly? Did he blurt it out? How did he make him believe it?

How would Aizawa react? He cared for Lillian, but the man was a wild card. His reactions to things varied depending on his mood. Mic could very easily tell that Shota cared more deeply for the girl than he'd ever had for any of his students, though that didn't mean they were necessarily less important to him. She and Aizawa just... had a connection that was plain to see. The girl was an adorable ball of sunshine, so how could he not adore her? But this was... this was big. Not only did Aizawa not know, but Lillian didn't either. This could make or break them.

Mic had no concrete proof to offer Aizawa, who was a man of fact and rationality. He'd think it was a joke were Mic to dare present it to him without an abundance of evidence. A blurry photo from roughly fifteen to sixteen years ago wasn't going to cut it. Claiming that he'd seen Lillian's hair float, and her eyes glow... well, it was absurd. It sounded insane to even him. Aizawa had been training Lillian personally and during school hours for months. Her and her quirk, and yet never had he seen her eyes and hair do such a thing.

He suddenly hated that he was such a jokester. Nobody took him seriously. He'd just have to keep insisting until Aizawa agreed to consider it. But when? He couldn't do it now... or maybe he could. Or maybe he could ask someone to get Lillian angry? Or annoyed? That would be mean and possibly anti-climactic.

"Those of you at the top will suffer the most. Of course, that's something you'll hear over and over again at UA. Show us what 'Plus Ultra' means!" Midnight pointed her whip... right at Hitoshi. Lillian and Neito inched away from him as every camera in the vicinity zoomed in on his sweating face. The purple-haired boy twitched "Hitoshi Shinso places first in the qualifier! That's right; he'll be worth ten million!"

Bakugo's eye twitched, and he grit his teeth. How had he gotten sixth place? Fucking... sixth place?! He was way better than these rejects. He'd expected at least second place. He hadn't been sure going in how many people Lillian could freeze, but he'd prepared himself for the possibility of her stopping the competition and simply walking to the end herself. Her quirk was just like that, and as fucking annoying as that was, he wasn't childish enough to sit in denial and think he could one up someone who could stop time. He took comfort in knowing he was more powerful than her in every other way.

What did really, really piss him off was that two of her buddies had jumped on for the fucking ride! Then, that damned Deku and half-and-half somehow managed to pass him. He blamed it on the purple mind-fucker, personally. He'd only snapped out of his control when he accidentally collided with that invisible chick on his way back to the starting line. What kind of quirk was that, anyway? Brainwashing?

Endeavor was also someone with a fiery temper who wasn't happy. Shoto hadn't even made it to the top three. Someone from General Studies had beat him, but the flame-hero wasn't an idiot. He knew it was only because of that girl that the tired looking one got first place. Her quirk was interesting to say the least, giving her the ability to stop a fight with the blink of an eye. It was a useful power indeed.

He was here to observe his son, and to see if he'd activate his power to the fullest potential for the world to see. The boy was denying who he was at the moment. Rebelling childishly against Endeavor and the first side of his quirk. It was ridiculous, but the Flame Hero was confident it would pass. Shoto would see. After all, Endeavor had created him for the sole purpose of surpassing All Might!

"First years! These are the rules you'll abide by: The game itself will last fifteen minutes. Individual point values will be added together to reach your team total. Everyone will know how much you're worth thanks to your headbands. Swipe as many headbands as you can to raise your team's score." Midnight smiled. "Stolen headbands must be worn from the neck up. So the more you steal, the harder it'll be to manage them. And another thing-- Even if your headband gets stolen or your team falls down, you can keep playing until time's up."

Hitoshi glanced to his two friends nervously. Lillian gave a small smile, and Neito offered an encouraging nod. Hitoshi forced himself to relax. His two friends had his back. He was glad, because he'd literally have to brainwash anyone else into being on his team otherwise. That would most definitely paint him out as a villain, and that... that was the last thing he wanted. He wanted to make his friends proud, and to show the world and UA just how badly he wanted this.

"This is going to be rough. You may use your quirks as much as you like. But there are still rules! Make a team fall on purpose and I'll slap you with a red card. You'll be disqualified!" Midnight announced. Bakugo looked severely irritated by this, which made Lillian nervous. She couldn't help but eye the heavy hitters of their class. Would they be a team of three, or would another student from one of the courses approach and be willing to join them?

"Now, you've got fifteen minutes to build your teams. I recommend you get started." Midnight ordered. Lillian and Neito immediately turned towards Hitoshi. The freckled girl felt more self conscious now that they were back in the stadium. So many pro heroes were here, and Aizawa was watching! She didn't want to let him down after all the time he'd spent on her and her two friends! She didn't want Present Mic to see her fail either...

"You guys with me?" Hitoshi asked uneasily. He wouldn't blame them for bailing out, though he doubted they would. The anxiety in him told him to double check nonetheless. Everyone was going to be gunning for him no matter what.

"Is that even a question, gamer? I'm ballin'." Neito grinned, and Hitoshi sagged with relief. They both looked to Lillian. She looked confused as to why they were gazing at her, raising a questioning eyebrow. They raised theirs right back at her.

"Oh." She blinked, yawning. Using her quirk had made her tired. She needed a nap... and eye drops. "Lillian has entered the chatroom. Yo holla at your girl."

"Excellent. I think Lillian should be the rider." Neito said. Hitoshi opened his mouth tot say something, but was cut off. "Kinky. I know; I've been there. But hear me out. I know she doesn't need her hands to use her quirk, but she's the lightest one here. Let's be real. She's short. Skinny."

"Pale." Hitoshi noted.

"...Okay, you're not wrong, but I don't think that contributes to her weight." Neito seemed to decide. He looked to Lillian again. "We'll be the horse, then?"

"I-If you guys want. I'm okay with pretty much anything." Lillian shrugged a little, looking down. The three top scorers teaming up seemed surreal, but this was a unique situation. They'd gone in working together, and that's how they were going to come out, it seemed. Lillian took a few deep breaths. They would be okay. They just needed to work together. Aizawa had been preparing them as best he could while injured! They'd gone through that hell, so this couldn't be so bad.

She glanced at the announcers box. Mic waving his arms in her direction, and gave her a thumbs up when she spotted him looking. She also thought she saw Mr. Aizawa nod to her, but it was a little far to tell. It made her feel a little better to pretend he did. Warmth and encouragement filled her chest as Mic bounced with energy, clapping for her and grinning widely.

Endeavor watched his son with keen eyes to see what he'd do, a grin stretching across his face when he trudged toward the field towards the freckled girl who'd come in second her chosen teammates, who'd taken the first and third place spots. She was plain looking, but her quirk was certainly something to marvel at. It wasn't flashy on its own, but if paired with something else... Endeavor glanced between his son and the girl, the beginnings of an idea forming in his mind.

"Lillian." Todoroki piped up, drawing the attention of the girl in question and her two teammates. Lillian blinked curiously up at him. He'd made it clear he wasn't really here to make friends or be buddy-buddy with anyone. Why he was approaching her, she didn't know. Especially not after all he said in 1-A's waiting room before this whole thing began. Hitoshi and Neito shared a look.

"T-Todoroki? What is it?" She asked quietly, fidgeting nervously under his rather obstinate yet cold gaze.

"Allow me to join your team." He said. She tensed, along with her two friends. Well that wasn't what she'd been expecting. "I assume you'll be the rider. My quirk is built for combat. Let me be your offensive defense."

Lillian was a little stunned to say the least. Todoroki coming up and asking to join her team wasn't at all what she'd expected, but she was seriously considering it. Her two teammates didn't say a word, looking to her. It made sense. She'd be the rider with the headband, and Todoroki was her classmate. She sat next to him everyday! Though she didn't know much about him, she knew more than they did.

Todoroki had a dual quirk, but she'd never seen him use his fire. She didn't factor that part of his power into their possibly strategy, as she didn't want to try and force him to do something that he was uncomfortable with or that could hurt him. His ice was useful enough on its own. They were going to have the ten million point headband, with the others added to its sum. If you shoved Todoroki into the equation... four of the top five winners were about to team up, which would have everyone gunning for them. But if they could defend the band they had...

"A-Alright... okay, yeah." Lillian nodded, looking up at him. He looked extremely relieved, a bit of the tension seeping from his shoulders. "Quirks... r-right, you know mine. I can f-freeze anything within my line of sight. Hitoshi's is b-brainwashing, which he did use on you. If he asks a question and gets a verbal response, th-the person is then under his control."

"Yo." Hitoshi said awkwardly. Todoroki nodded, not seeming upset by purple-haired boy's previous use of his quirk. Hitoshi was extremely relieved for that. People usually didn't appreciate being brainwashed, but it depended.

"N-Neito's is copy. He can copy the quirk of anyone he touches for five to ten minutes, depending on how hard he focuses on keeping it." Lillian said. Neito gave a nod, crossing his arms over his chest awkwardly. She realized right then and there that somehow, against all odds, she had the most social skill out of the two of them at the moment. Trippy.

"R-Right. To-Todoroki's quirk is h... i-ice. You both saw it, s-so you know." Lillian cut herself off. Todoroki looked even more relieved, more tension fading when he realized he wasn't going to be asked to use his flames. He was thankful and a bit surprised Lillian had picked up on the fact that he'd never used it because he didn't want to. Most assumed he simply used his ice because it worked best for the situation, and were confused when he refused to use his flames. The lack of interrogation was.. well, refreshing to say the least.

"So what's the plan? Lillian is the lightest, so she'll be on top. I don't need my hands for my quirk, so I can be in the front. Todoroki, it looks like you only need one hand free for yours. If Neito makes a copy of yours and goes on the other side, we can have ice all around..." Hitoshi trailed off. Lillian snapped her fingers, brightening.

"Th-That's what I was thinking. We need to focus on k-keeping the band we have. I-I... I was thinking we'd make a dome." Lillian admitted. The three teens stared at her blankly, and she winced. It wasn't the best idea, and it was certainly the most cowardly. It would be more easy to defend, however.

"Midnight said w-we could use our quirks a-anyway we saw fit, a-as long as we didn't p-purposely knock anyone o-over or leave the area, r-right? So if N-Neito and Todoroki work together, I-I think we... w-we could make a dome." Lillian winced a little. It sounded bad, even in her own ears. "I-I know that isn't the best idea, but we'd be out of the open a-and it would be easier to defend. H-Hitoshi could get people to go away even through the d-dome, and I could freeze anyone who cracked through."

"No, I think you're onto something there." Neito rubbed his chin. Todoroki looked like he was really considering it. "The festival helps you show off your quirk, but I also want us to make it past this round. I think Lillian and I have probably secured a good chance at getting plenty of offers from various agencies internship wise. I'm sure you have too, Todoroki, but I don't know what your goals are. If Hitoshi could tell people to leave from inside the dome..."

"It would show teamwork and a good use of my quirk." Hitoshi agreed. "It's a good plan. It'll draw attention if we do it right. Bakugo has probably figured out my quirk by now, and he's so pissed off about his placing that he'll probably want to try and take our headband right from the get-go.

"I'm fine with this plan if you are. Are we allowed out of sight of the cameras?" Todoroki checked. Lillian shared an unsure glance with Hitoshi. That was a good question. There was no way for the UA staff to tell if they were breaking any rules if they were inside a dome. It could prove to be an issue.

"She said we could use our quirks anyway we saw fit." Neito shrugged. Lillian took a deep breath.

"We can try it. I don't th-think they'll disqualify us for something they didn't cover." Lillian said. Todoroki looked like he was considering something. He glanced at Neito, and then down at his hands. Lillian and her two friends watched as he seemed to roll an idea around in his mind. They held their breath. Todoroki was such an unknown to them. They'd been training all month with one another, and had spent pretty much every day together. Todoroki was new, and they had no clue what to expect.

"I think I can make my ice clear." He said after a moment, looking back up. "The... other half of my quirk allows me to create fire. Boiling water and then freezing it makes ice clear, from what I know. Considering that, if I added heat to the colder part of my quirk..."

"You could maybe make clear ice." Hitoshi finished, grinning. Todoroki looked pleased.

"I-It doesn't all need to be clear, either. J-Just so long as they can see that w-we're still in the proper formation." Lillian smiled hesitantly. Todoroki nodded in agreement, confidence swelling. He'd been unsure, coming over here. He'd fully expected Lillian to tell him to buzz off after all he said in the waiting room to her and to Midoriya. All they needed to do was protect their band. His quirk and Monoma's combined with Lillian's and Hitoshi's... they balanced out perfectly.

The buzzer chimed, causing Lillian to jump slightly. "Oh, goody! It's time to get this party started." Midnight said, stretching her arms with a grin. She was quite excited to see how her students would do. Seeing four of the top five winners jumbled together in a small group was intriguing, and certainly something she'd never seen before. She wondered what their strategy was. She knew at least Lillian and Monoma were good friends, if their time in Art History was anything to go off of. Though she'd also seen the pair with Hitoshi in the past and in pictures Mic probably shouldn't have.

"Hey, hey, look alive!" Mic nudged Aizawa awake. The dark-haired man grunted, eyes going back to Lillian, Hitoshi, and Neito. He blinked. When had Todoroki gotten there? Mic continued, "After fifteen minutes to pick teammates and talk strategy, twelve cavalry teams are preparing to go head-to-head!"

"I see some unexpected student combinations." Aizawa noted aloud, eyes on Lillian as she and her teammates tried to figure out how they were supposed to hold her. Neito was making several hand gestures, but Hitoshi seemed extremely unsure. Todoroki simply stood next to Lillian, both of them watching the pair debate. They looked pretty tired standing there. Aizawa had brought some extra eye drops, and hoped Lillian would hunt him down if she needed them.

"Come on, everyone get your hands in the air! It's time for an arena-thumping, UA battle royale! Let me hear ya scream!" He cheered as Lillian was hoisted up, almost sitting on Todoroki and Neito's shoulders. Hitoshi had both his hands under her shoes. She bit her lip as she secured the headband around her forehead, pulling her bangs out from under it. Their point values had been added up, though it didn't make much of a difference. Ten million was ten million. The golden goose of all headbands.

"I hope you're happy with your chosen teams! Let's get this party started! One final countdown before the game starts!" Mic clenched his fists excitedly. He sort of really, really hoped someone pissed Lillian off. "Three! ...Two! ...One!"

"Begin!" Midnight proclaimed, and everyone jolted into the rink.

Neito and Todoroki set to work immediately. Todoroki's side would be clear, seeing as Neito was new to this quirk overall and would probably set them on fire if he tried to internally heat the ice part of the quirks he had copied. Literally all the teams had begun to run at them. Lillian sputtered, eyes going wide. She blinked.

All the teams froze, and she felt pain spark in her gut as a great part of the crowd in that general direction also paused. She still wasn't recovered from earlier, and that was way more than two-hundred people. She winced as her eyes began to sting. Ice slowly rose up around them, Neito working slower to ensure he didn't accidentally impale someone. Todoroki's ice was clear as glass, but it looked strong and thick enough to keep the people outside at bay. Lillian would be able to freeze people through the ice if Hitoshi couldn't get a verbal response.

"What's this?! It seems the absolute best member of the top placing team has frozen her competition once again, along with some of the crowd!" Mic cheered. Aizawa shot him a dry look, as picking favorites wasn't something teachers should do. Speaking of which, yeah, he definitely wasn't wearing his Team Eraserhead shirt and enjoying it. "It looks like they're making... a protective dome!"

"Half of it's clear. So the cameras can see in." Aizawa grinned under his bandages. How clever. Nobody could accuse them of rule breaking if they were in view.

"W-W-We good?" Lillian said. Blood dribbled from between her lips, and some of the crowd slipped from her control. Pain gripped at her insides, almost as bad as it had been at the USJ. She wiped at the crimson pouring from her mouth hastily, not wanting it to get on Hitoshi.

"Yeah, we've got it." Neito said after glancing at Todoroki, who gave a nod. Lillian dropped her control, taking a gasping breath of air as a wave of dizziness hit her. They watched tensely as the teams outside skidded to a halt, clearly confused by the sudden appearance of the dome. She winced as Bakugo's face twisted with rage. Even Iida looked irked as he adjusted his grip on Izuku's feet, Ochako and a pink-haired girl with googles peeking out at them. Kaminari looked shaken.

"Dammit!" She heard Bakugo's scream, muffled.

"Going after her is a risk." Iida said, and Hitoshi barely caught it. "If she freezes us and we run out of time..."

Everyone with lower point scores immediately turned to those with higher, Bakugo and Izuku. Lillian let out a breath of air, yelping with a metal arm slammed down against the outside of the icy dome. It didn't cause a crack, but the boy who'd done it was undeterred.

"Hey, man! What the hell are you doing?!" Hitoshi shrieked dramatically at TetsuTetsu as he pounded against the clear side of the ice, looking heavily annoyed. Lillian took a few deep breaths. This was fine. They were okay... for right now. As long as they kept vigilant, they'd be okay. Someone like Bakugo could easily come along and blow the dome to smithereens in one fell swoop, so they needed to be careful.

"What does i-" TetsuTetsu's eyes went blank, and his team members glanced nervously up at him as his shoulders went slack and his arms dropped to his sides. Hitoshi gnawed on the inside of his cheek. Purposely making someone fall was against the rules. He couldn't have the boy knock himself and his team down.

"Have your team turn and go that way." Hitoshi seemed to decide. TetsuTetsu complied without a seconds hesitation, his own body twisting around as he blankly urged his teammates to go the opposite direction. They seemed quite reluctant, but they complied nonetheless. Lillian let out a breath of air she hadn't realized she'd been holding, and Neito threw his head back and groaned.

"Thank god." The blonde grumbled out. "That was a heart attack and a half. So, you guys, how's the weather?"

"Spicy with a chance to blood." Lillian's response seemed to surprise Todoroki, who's gaze snapped to her as she wiped her bloody hands on her uniform. Lillian's eyes accidentally met those of the Number Two hero, who was watching their team carefully. She mildly panicked, sputtering. "I-I am- uh, the ice guardian, guardian of the ice. Endeavor quivers before me."

"Fuck off!" Hitoshi agreed in the general direction of the flame hero, jerking his head towards the fiery man. Todoroki sputtered, eyes going wide with surprise at their blatant disrespect towards his father. Not that he was particularly against it. He glanced up at Lillian with newfound respect. He supposed Hitoshi and Neito weren't as bad as he thought either. How... odd. Lillian was usually so reserved and quiet in class, though she did mumble some questionable stuff to herself.

"That brings up something I've been wondering about, and we've got time to kill." Neito said. "What's your dad like, Todoroki? He seems a little like an, no offense, ass in interviews."

It was true. Endeavor boasted about himself and his achievements in interviews, but to an extreme. It made him look like a major dickbag. Anyone with ears could see how full of himself he was. He was a rank climber, constantly fighting for first place against the unbeatable All Might. He wasn't doing it to save people. He just wanted to be the best. It sort of reminded her of Bakugo, only Endeavor was a grown ass man. Bakugo was allowed to be a petty teen for a while. He just needed some dumb bitch juice was all.

"Yeah, he doesn't seem like the best guy. He's good at taking down villains, and he's got a flashy appearance and quirk. But like..." Hitoshi trailed off. Lillian chipped in.

"I-I did an essay o-on him in m-middle school, a-and he's sort of... w-well... I-I'm not trying t-to call your d-dad Shady, To-Todoroki... b-but he's... t-totally shady..." Lillian trailed off, glancing back at Todoroki. She was surprised to see he wasn't mad, but more thoughtful. She glanced towards the flame hero, Endeavor. He never smiled, and the guy was as disrespectful as they came.

Having literally no friends and too much free time, she'd stumbled upon an article about Rei Todoroki and how she'd been put in a mental ward, though the circumstances were sketchy, and Endeavor's story didn't fit. Pile on his oldest son, a boy who went by Touya, who apparently died in a quirk accident. Again, mysterious and hella suspicious. That, and his kids were never really seen by the press. The children of pro heroes were usually closely watched, but it was almost like the Todoroki family had very specific places they were supposed to be seen, and at very specific times.

"Well..." Todoroki trailed off. He was going to regret this. "Have you ever heard of a quirk marriage?"
