Chapter 33
Third person pov
It was Monday morning, and Lillian was a little jittery. The prospect of returning to school was nerve wracking and exciting all at the same time. Ochako was excited to see her, and though Tsu wasn't as exuberant in her expression, Lillian could tell the blunt girl was ready to see her too. Lillain was glad. She really wanted to meet up with them. She'd been so worried these last few days, even just texting them. One of her last clear memories of Tsu was of her with that villain's hand on her face.
Purble meme Lord:
Are we still walking to school together?
Lillian:
Only if you want to!
She hadn't had much to do these last few days, so she and Hitoshi had been texting back and forth nonstop, sending memes, links to vine compilations they'd pulled from the deepest corners of the internet, and various photos of Present Mic and Eraserhead. Finding pictures of the latter was hard, him being an underground hero and all. But Lillian had time to kill and a hell of a lot of determination.
She was a little sad to know she'd have to give Hitoshi back his hoodie. She'd been wearing all day, everyday, and had grown semi attached to it. She hoped he didn't mind the smell of peppermint and rose, because that's the air freshener her mother had been spraying through the house for the past two days. The woman had an obsession with scented thing, let it be perfume, candles, or incense.
"I-I'll see you later, mom." Lillian stopped to hug her mother with one arm, the hoodie folded neatly over the other. June wrapped the girl up tightly, placing a kiss on the top of her head. A part of her was paranoid, and didn't want her daughter to go, but she trusted in UA, and in her little girl.
"Be safe." The woman demanded worriedly. Lillian gave a smile and a sure nod before bouncing off towards the door. Being cooped up in the house wasn't so bad. Being cooped up in the house with her parents? Another story. She was almost glad her dad had already left for work. It meant she didn't have to fend him off while trying to drag herself through the front door. She hoped her parents would be a little calmer after today.
Hitoshi was waiting for her outside her house. She lit up immediately upon seeing her friend. She tried to stab down the embarrassment that lingered from being caught shrieking the words to 'Bitch Lasagna' at the top of her lungs by his mom. Sure, he'd been doing it too, but it didn't diminish the horror she felt any less.
"Morning." He grumbled, looking just as exhausted as usual. "You look too happy. It's Monday."
"I-I'm just excited to see everyone again." Lillian shifted a little. She knew none of her classmates, excusing Izuku, had been extremely injured. They were all fine now. Midoriya had been patched up by recovery girl, and everyone else had scrapes so minor they didn't need much but disinfecting and maybe a band-aid. Lillian shivered as she recalled how close herself, Tsu, and Izuku had come to death. Had the others almost lost their lives as well?
Hitoshi watched the expression on Lillian's face change. It was subtle, but enough to tell him she was remembering what had gone down. He couldn't help but gulp at the thought. Seeing Lillian pulled from the USJ on the news was horrifying. While her classmates didn't have any life-threatening injuries, it had been abundantly clear that they were all in shock as they filed out of the Unforeseen Simulation Joint.
The memory of the thing the police had captured, the creature deemed "Nomu" that All Might had defeated, sent a shiver down his spine. Had... Had Lillian encountered that thing? Did she know it was caught?
"O-Oh, you're hoodie!" Lillian exclaimed, and they stopped walking for a moment. He blinked down at her as she held it up timidly, an awkward smile on her face.
"Keep it." He shrugged, and she faltered, brows furrowing. "I have loads more, and you seemed comfortable in it."
She really did. He knew she liked things that made her feel smaller. He didn't know why exactly, but it didn't matter. If the hoodie made her feel more relaxed, that was what mattered. It looked better on her anyway. Besides, he'd... never really had a friend before. He didn't mind sharing his things with Lillian. Especially not after the whole Bitch Lasagna thing.
"B-But..." Lillian was tempted to accept, but she didn't want to take his hoodie when she could just get her own. Hitoshi had already done so much for her. He'd shown her vines, and he'd let her stay in his room for the night after... after the USJ. He'd been a great friend! She didn't want to... if anything she should be giving him something...
"I haven't worn it in a while anyway." He shrugged. "If I want it back, I'll ask. You can hold onto it until then."
Lillian hesitated, but the lazy grin on Hitoshi's face was enough to make her submit. She gave a small smile, her cheeks flaring red as she ducked her head. He snorted in response to her embarrassment as she choked out a miniscule 'thank you' that sounded more like a squeak than anything else. Still, she hugged the hoodie to her chest, as though it would mask her awkwardness from him. It only made him want to chuckle more.
UA high was, once again, buzzing with reporters. Lillian felt the color drain from her face when she saw the hoard. It reminded her of how this had all started. Reporters had swarmed the hero school's front gate with no restraint, allowing a villain to slip in and steal the schedule that told them where All Might would be. Where... Where her class would be.
"Lillian?" Hitoshi asked when he realized the girl had stopped. In fact, it actually looked like she wasn't breathing at all. He put a hand on her shoulder, and she flinched, blinking rapidly. He could see tears in her eyes, and he winced, eyes trailing back to the group of reporters. Yeah, this seemed like the last thing she needed.
"Th-The villain... th-they..." She trailed off, staring. Hitoshi winced a little. Great. This was great. Hitoshi loved Mondays! They always went so well! Nothing ever went wrong! Wow, amazing!
"Come on, it'll be alright." Hitoshi assured, putting an arm around her shoulders and beginning to pull her forward. Her legs moved, but it didn't look like she was processing it. The girl's breathing picked up considerably as they got closer. Hitoshi thought he could feel her begin to shake, and he bit back a bout of curses as the reporters turned to them.
"Lillian Faust!" A reporter leapt forward. "Can you tell us what happened inside the-"
"Move." A voice demanded. The reporter jumped back as King Vlad, class 1-B's homeroom teacher, appeared. He didn't look too happy to see so many reporters around. Hitoshi had a feeling they were having trouble getting rid of them. The purple-haired boy was sure the police were on the way to disperse the crowd. Lillian took a few deep breaths as Hitoshi pulled her forward, glaring at anyone who dared open their mouth to try and ask a question. The took one look at Lillian's pale face and the teachers that seemed to be popping up left and right and seemed to decide against it.
Present Mic was at the front of it all, standing by the gate. He frowned when he saw the look on Lillian's face. "You okay, Little Listener?" He asked her as Hitoshi pulled her past the gate and out of the crowd. Lillian blinked a few times, forcing a smile as her favorite hero approached. He peered down at her suspiciously over the tops of his sunglasses. It was pretty clear he didn't believe her.
"Lillian?!" A voice screamed. Lillian looked up just in time to see Ochako diving for her, Tsu darting close behind. The frog-like girl didn't jump on her like Ochako did, instead opting to stand by as the freckled girl was tackled out of Hitoshi's grasp. The general studies student opened his mouth to say something, but he snapped it shut again soon after, brows furrowing.
"O-Ochako!" Lillian gasped out, arms wrapping around the girl. Her eyes then landed on Tsuyu. "T-Tsu! Y-You're both-"
"We were so worried!" Ochako all but wailed. "We're all waiting for you in the classroom- come on! Tsu and I were waiting for you out here, and we were so worried. Last time we saw you- Oh my god!"
"Ochako-chan, calm down." Tsu croaked, though you could see the sheer relief in her eyes as Ochako dragged Lillian towards the school. The freckled girl gazed back at Hitoshi with apologetic eyes, a red cheeks, in tears in her eyes. He gave a reassuring smile and a thumbs up to let her know it was fine. He understood.
Lillian was floated down the hall and over the crowds by Ochako, who was determined to get her to the classroom without her being bothered by any other students. A few noticed her and pointed, but Lillian was gone as soon as they noticed, drifting through the air. She'd curled up into a nervous ball, suddenly glad she'd worn spandex shorts under her skirt today.
Class 1-A fell silent as the door slammed open to reveal a slightly-green Ochako and a nonchalant Tsuyu. Before anyone could as where Lillian was, the girl went flying over the two girls' heads, spinning into the air and descending slowly. Her eyes were wide in surprise, her knuckles white from clutching the hoodie in her arms so hard. Her peers reacted immediately.
"Lillian!"
