Chapter 23

Third person pov

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

Lillian isn't a vulgar person, usually, but fuck.

Villains have arrived for whatever reason. Why do villains do anything, these days? Lillian doesn't know, but that doesn't really matter. They had come here thinking they'd be saving other people, but it was becoming abundantly clear that they were going to have to save themselves instead.

"The only real heroes I see are Thirteen and Eraserhead. Perplexing. According to the schedule we retrieved from UA, All Might should be here as well." A deep voice rumbled below, and the purple fog morphed into something vaguely resembling a human shape. Yellow eyes glared up at them. The students were paralyzed.

"So, you scumbags used the press as a cover and sneaked onto campus." Aizawa bit out dangerously. Lillian felt her heart rate pick up as the villains began to approach, her mind racing. They were here for All Might? That explained how the reporters were able to get onto UA grounds. They hadn't actually been the ones to take down the gate; it had been someone here instead.

Thirteen stepped up as the villains approached, the one covered in hands seeming to be the lead. Aizawa's scarf expanded around him as he prepared the fight, loosening and floating around him in a manner that was nearly ethereal. Lillian momentarily wondered how exactly he did such a thing.

"What? Real villains? No way." Kirishima was in disbelief, and he wasn't the only one. Though Lillian was pretty sure this was serious. Mr. Aizawa and Thirteen would scare them-- not like this. Lillian felt her palms begin to sweat. "How could this many of them get into a UA facility this secure?"

"Yeah, Thirteen." Momo stepped forward, putting a comforting hand on Lillian's shoulder as well as Ochako's as she did so. "Why aren't the alarms going off?"

"Good question." Thirteen breathed out thoughtfully. "I'm... I'm not sure."

"Is the entire campus under attack? Or is their their only target?" Todoroki seemed freakishly calm. Lillian shook out her hands. This was going to be just fine. They were all members of the hero course, and even so, their teachers wouldn't let anything happen to them. "Either way, if the alarm sensors aren't being triggered, then one of these villains must have a Quirk that's masking their presence here. They carefully chose this facility as an entry point at a time when a class was being taught. They're fools for trespassing here, but they've thought this out. Whatever their plan, they must have a concrete objective in mind. But what is it?"

This was the most Lillian had ever heard Todoroki say. She liked him better when he was quiet.

She rolled the thought of freezing them around in her head, but they were already so fanned out that she wasn't sure she'd be able to get them all in one fell swoop. Not only that, but she wasn't sure she could hold so many for long enough to make a difference. Even holding Aoyama and Ashido long enough to tie the red string around them during the battle portion of their training had proved to be tiring, and they were only students. She'd only had them stopped in time for around four minutes. How long could she hold a group of villains for? Sixty seconds? Five?

"Thirteen, get them outta here." Aizawa stepped forward. "And alert the main campus. Actually, if they've got the ability to block our sensors, then they might be jamming our regular communications, too. Kaminari, try using your quirk to contact the school."

"Yes, sir." He said quickly. Lillian clenched her fists. The villains were getting closer. Should she try stopping them? She could see nearly every one of them in her line of sight, but not quite. She knew her endurance wasn't good. She cursed herself for not practicing more.

"What're you gonna do?! You can't fight them on your own!" Izuku cried out. "There's too many of them. Even if you can nullify their Quirks, your fighting style's not suited for this. Your power works best in stealth and one-on-one fights. That's not gonna help with a group..."

Aizawa glanced back at him. "You can't be a pro if you only have one trick." He said, and Izuku jolted slightly. "I'll leave it to you, Thirteen."

And then he was gone, leaping into the face of danger for their sake. Lillian couldn't freeze the villains now without also freezing her teacher, and she wasn't about to leave him stuck midair with no defense. Right now they needed to focus on getting out of here. Now.

They all began to sprint for the gates. Adrenaline coursed through Lillian's veins, and her hair was pounding so hard she thought it'd jump straight out of her chest at this rate. Things almost seemed to move in slow motion as they darted  for the exit. Like they simply couldn't go fast enough. Lillian tried to extinguish the tightness in her chest. She had to be strong, for herself, and for her classmates. If she was going to be a hero, she had to get used to this stuff. She knew that, of course, she just didn't think she'd need to get used to it this... soon.

She'd adapt. It would be fine! This was totally fine. It was all going to be fine.

The man made of purple mist shot up out of the ground in front of them. "There is no escape for you." His voice rumbled as he rose higher, looming above us. "It's a pleasure to meet you. We are the League of Villains. I know it's impolite, but we decided to invite ourselves into this haven of justice to say hello. And besides, isn't this a fitting place for All Might, the Symbol of Peace, to take his last breath?"

Lillian almost snorted, her brain feeling awfully numb. They wanted... they wanted to kill All Might? They wanted to try killing the Number One hero?! She really didn't think they were capable of such a thing. It was all might, for God's sake. He'd been at the top of the rankings ever since she was a child, and had gone undefeated thus far. It was... ridiculous to think this was all happening because some villains decided seeking out the Symbol of Peace was a good idea.

"I believe he was supposed to be here today, and yet I see no sign of him. There must've been some sort of change in plans we could not have foreseen." The man said thoughtfully. Lillian felt herself shrink back a little as his form got bigger, the mist expanding. Beside her, Ochako was trembling. Lillian had gone too still to shake. "Ah, well, in the end I suppose it doesn't matter. I still have a role to play."

Thirteen opened one of their caps and pointed it at the villain, but quickly gasped when Bakugo and Kirishima dove in. Lillian wished she had that confidence. A large explosion detonated, blowing Lillian's hair back and shrouding the class in smoke. "Did ya think we were just gonna stand around and let you tear this place to shreds?!" Kirishima called from somewhere in the cloud of smog.

The smoke cleared, and Lillian blanched. "You live up to your school's reputation. But you should be more careful, children. Otherwise... someone might get hurt."

"You two... get out of the way, right now!" Thirteen ordered, panic in her tone, but it was too late.

"I'll scatter you across this facility to meet my comrades, and your deaths!"

Mist shot around them faster than any of them could comprehend. Lillian stumbled and bumped into Tsuyu just as they were engulfed in a bubble of purple and black. The girl heard herself shriek, but the wind mist rushing past her ears was way too loud for her to register. She grabbed onto Tsu, who grabbed onto her right back, her dark terror-filled eyes meeting Lillian's just as they were both sucked away.

They were immediately dropped, and Lillian's eyes widened as they began to fall towards water. The shipwreck zone, Lillian noted as air rushed past them. "T-Tsu!" She exclaimed, her eyes spotting Izuku submerged in the water, a villain rushing after him. "There!"

Tsu acted quickly, her arm going around Lillian's waist. Lillian wrapped her own around the other girl's middle as they plummeted towards the enemy. Lillian held their breath as they plunged in, though the shock of the cold nearly made her open her mouth in surprise. Tsu's foot connected with the enemy.

"Hey Midoriya!" She heard the girl say, though it was warbled. "Bleh."

The frog-like girl's tongue shot out, wrapping around Izuku's middle before they were being propelled out of the icy cold. Lillian spotted another villain, this one a woman with webbed feet, rocketing towards them. She froze them just long enough for Tsu to drag them swiftly past, but she released the control just after. She had to keep her energy up. She couldn't risk passing out during a situation like this.

Tsuyu pulled them onto the deck of the ship, Lillian gasping for air as they came up. Tsu dropped Midoriya off first, lifting Lillian after him before she began to climb up. The girl rolled onto her back as she was softly set down, eyes wide and heart pounding. Wow, she'd just... done that. They'd just done that! That was technically a villain fight. Well, they were still sort of in one, but... it hadn't been that bad? Lillian hadn't immediately died like she thought she would, though that was probably thanks to Tsu.

"You saved my life, Asui. Lillian." Izuku blinked a few times, evidently still processing.

"I told you to call me Tsu." Tsuyu popped up, and Izuku began to panic immediately, giving thanks to the frog-like girl and Lillian. The blue-eyed girl pushed herself up and to her feet, her sopping ponytail slapping against her back uncomfortably. Lillian rolled her shoulders.

"I-It was no problem, Midoriya." Lillian took a few deep breaths, and Tsuyu set a comforting hand on her shoulder. The girls of the class had all gotten pretty used to Lillian's anxiety, and they were all quite mindful of it. Lillian immediately deflated like some sort of popped balloon, tears in her eyes. "God, this is turning out to be a terrible day of class."

"You said it." Tsuyu agreed.

"Yeah, I keep thinking about what that villain said... They knew our whole schedule and who would be here. They must have gotten into school files while we were all stuck in the cafeteria." Izuku frowned. Lillian did too, her hands dropping. She hadn't realized she'd been tugging on her fingers before now.

"Y-Yeah, the teachers were busy trying to get the media off school grounds." I squeezed my hair, letting the chilled water splash onto the deck of the ship.

"That means they've been waiting for the perfect time to attack." Izuku clenched his fists. "Just like Todoroki said they were."

Lillian gulped. If they were this careful thus far, she had no doubts that they at least had a chance at bringing All Might down. They weren't idiots, and that... that's what terrified her the most.

"Do... Do you really think they have a way to kill All Might?" Lillian twisted her hair again, even though something told her there was a good chance she'd be getting in the water again sometime soon. She didn't like that, no, but they didn't have a lot of choices here.

"Thank about it though. If the villains spent so much time planning this attack, then they probably figured out a way to kill him." Tsuyu was blunt as always, which startled both Izuku and Lillian. "And didn't you hear what that smoke guy said? Maybe we should worry more about not getting tortured to death. Otherwise we might not survive long enough to see All Might again. And even if he does show up, who knows if he'll make it out in one piece."

"G-Great." Lillian sputtered. "This day is going great."

Tsuyu winced a little and patted the girl's back. "Ah, sorry, Lillian. I shouldn't have taken it so far." She apologized. Lillian nodded numbly. Cool. This was cool.

"You bastards!" A voice shouted below them. They all paled when they saw over a dozen figures racing through the water and towards the boats. "I'll have a fun time eating you?!"

Lillian's face went slack. Eating? What was this man, a cannibal? A child predator? Both?

"If they can beat him, then we have to stop whatever it is these bad guys are planning. We have to work together and keep All Might safe." Izuku looked Tsuyu in the eyes, and then Lillian. "No one at UA knows what's happening. "This is up to us. Let's be heroes."

Lillian's breath hitched, her hands tightening into fists. Izuku's words echoed around in her head, and she felt... almost calm, in that moment. She was still deathly afraid, and she would rather cry herself to death than face this, but she was... oddly okay. Like her mind was combating this dire situation with indifference and this odd numbing train of thought. It was making this out to be normal.

Let's be heroes.

Yeah, they could do that.
