Chapter 21

Third person pov

Dinner was a rather nice affair. Hitoshi's father was very interested in her quirk, and thought it was cool. She found their quirks amazing as well, and could see where Hitoshi's came from. Mihoko had a quirk that let her feel others emotions, to an extent. It was apparently a form of mind-reading, though she only got feelings. Seldom did she ever get real words. In contrast, Hajime had a quirk called "no sleep" that essentially allowed him to go longer periods without rest. Hence the bags under his eyes, and his job as a doctor.

Lillian had greatly feared her parents would be upset with her staying out so late. Their reaction, was in fact, the opposite. They were overjoyed that she was finally socializing. Her mother even more so when she realized it was a boy. Her father had been a little pensive upon learning this, and looked pretty close to throwing the front door open and calling out to Hitoshi, who'd walked her home. He, luckily, didn't.

That morning, Lillian got up feeling rather happy. Most mornings felt... weighted, and she felt nervous, but today she was nothing short of cheerful. Her parents noticed it, too. They both were glad to see their daughter feeling a little more open. Especially with how quiet she often times happened to be.

"Lillian." A voice called, stopping the girl in her commute to school. She peered curiously towards the source. She was surprised to see Hitoshi there, waiting for her at the corner with a small smile on his face. A smile formed on her own face when she realized her new friend had taken the time to wait for her. "Want to walk together?"

She hadn't been able to refuse.

Hitoshi was incredibly nice. She almost felt unworthy of being his friend, but squashed it down. It would only hurt the both of them if she tried to avoid him, or something of that sort, right? She'd come to UA looking to be a hero, and... well, heroes showed confidence in themselves! She had to do that as well.

"I saw you walk to school with that friend of yours this morning." Ochako teased as she and Lillian took their seats. Immediately, the girl felt her face go red with clear embarrassment. Of course she wasn't embarrassed being Hitoshi's friend! No, of course not! He was so nice, and so was his family, so she'd never feel that way, she just... oh, she didn't know!

"Quiet down, class." Aizawa sighed as he took his place at the front of the room. The chattering group of students immediately fell silent. School hadn't been in session long, but they were quickly learning to fear Eraserhead, and to do whatever he said, whenever he said it to avoid getting a look that would haunt you for a good week and a half. Mina was still having nightmares from the smile he gave on the first day.

Aizawa sighed heavily. Really, he wasn't paid enough for this.

"Today's training will be a little different." He started blandly. "You'll have three instructors. Me, All Might, and another faculty member will be keeping tabs on you."

Whispers shot through the class. Ochako leaned a little closer to Lillian, and the freckled girl immediately became nervous. Getting called out by their teacher really wasn't on her to-do list, but neither was ignoring her friend. "Three faculty members! Do you think it's because of the break in?" She asked quietly. Lillian thought about it for a moment.

"P...Possibly." Lillian admitted. She'd been thinking a lot about the security breach, and it didn't make much sense in her mind. "I mean, h-how could the press g-get past such high-tech s-security by themselves?"

Ochako looked a little grim at her observation, rolling the idea that something else as amiss in her head.

"Sir!" Sero threw his hand up into the air. "What kind of training is this?"

"Rescue." Aizawa answered, and Lillian's eyes lit up a little. She wasn't even one for violence, really, but rescue sounded like something she'd really like to do. Her quirk could stop buildings from falling, prevent villains from getting to civilians, and put a pause on a whole bucket-load of other disasters. She wanted to utilize that. "You'll be dealing with natural disasters, shipwrecks, stuff like that."

"Disasters, huh? It sounds like we're in for a big workout." Kaminari noted as the excitement levels in the rooms spiked. Ochako and Lillian shared bright looks. The dark-haired girl felt her giddiness overwhelm her anxiety for the moment.

"Totally!" Mina agreed with a squeal, her hands clenching into fists as she did so. Lillian could relate. Were she as bold as the pink girl, she'd probably be reacting in a similar manner. She stopped herself, instead settling for a happy smile and fidgety fingers.

"This is going to see so cool." The brunette next to her squealed. "I love rescue heroes!"

"M-Me too." Lillian agreed. They both shared gleeful looks.

"Wow, real hero stuff!" Kirishima draped himself over his desk with a grin. "This is what separates the men from the boys. I'm shakin' with excitement!"

"Finally, I'll get to show off how good I am in water. Ribbit." Tsuyu noted. Lillian blushed a little, thinking about her quirk. It was a powerful quirk. Not incredibly flashy, but useful in more ways than one. She honestly... she honestly couldn't wait for a chance to use it. She had it, and she was in hero school now, right? She needed to step up and embrace the power she'd been born with, even if she was scared!

"Guys, I'm not finished yet." Aizawa interrupted in a blatant tone that drew everyone's attention. "What you wear in this exercise is up to you. I know you're excited about costumes... but keep in mind that you haven't gotten used to them yet, and they might limit your abilities. This special training's at an off-campus facility, so we'll be taking a bus to get there. That's all. Start getting ready."

"This is going to be so cool!" Ochako squealed as soon as Aizawa was gone. Kids were already rushing to get their costumes. "Are you going to wear your costume, Lillian? I think I'm going to use mine. I was pretty comfortable in it during the battle training, and besides, I won't get used to it if I don't wear it, right?"

"R-Right! I think... I think I'll wear mine too." Lillian agreed with a smile. Having some form of eye protection would be important, and her outfit wasn't all that different from a civilian one, if you excused the materials it was made out of it. Besides, if she got dizzy, the heavily-scented sleeves would help her stay awake were she to get dizzy.

Lillian found herself outside not that much later, standing near Shoji. Ochako had rushed off to go talk to Izuku with promises that she'd be right back. She glanced at the tall boy with six arms. His quirk was absolutely amazing, and she thought back to when one of his hands had morphed into a mouth the other day. It was quite amazing, to say the least, and incredibly useful.

She stared with slight awe as one of his hands once again began to shift and change into a mouth. "Can I help you with something?" He asked, though not unkindly. "You've been staring for quite a while."

She felt her face go red with embarrassment. "O-Oh, I'm sorry!" She sputtered, her eyes going wide. "I just- a-ah, I think your quirk is really c-cool, that's all. I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable."

The mouth curved into a smile that made her feel a little more relieved. "No, not at all. Thank you for the compliment. My quirk is often found to be odd, but it is rather useful." He explained. Lillian felt herself relax a little. Shoji was really nice.

"It's super useful." Lillian awed. "Imagine all the things you could do with it. N-Not only can you lift things several times your weight, but you can create extra eyes and ears if you need them." She blurted out excitedly. Shoji looked a little bashful, but Lillian couldn't help it. She wasn't a total quirk nerd, but she couldn't much help the things that noticed and amazed her. Maybe her not being acknowledging her quirk for so long was what made her interest in them rise to begin with.

"I suppose so." Shoji answered. The bus pulled up. "What's your quirk? I don't think you've ever said."

Her cheeks went red with embarrassment as Shoji stood up. He was extremely tall. Together, they began filing towards the bus. "A-Ah, it's called Freeze Frame." She supposed there was no point in saying it wasn't anything special. She was beginning to realize that maybe it was. She just needed to learn how to use it, that was all. Holding scenes with regular civilians a few times was all she'd really done with it. Holding Ashido and Aoyama, both of which had no doubt practiced their quirks for a while, had proved to tire her out despite only doing it for a minute or so.

"Freeze Frame?" Shoji asked, stepped to the side so she could get onto the bus. Iida was sulking because nobody was listening to his wish for a seating chart. Lillian felt a little bit bad about that.

"I can freeze anything in front of me." She said quietly as she slid into the nearest seat. Shoji seemed to hesitate, but eventually sat down next to her. Lillian felt herself brighten a little. So she wasn't completely annoying him and making him wish she'd just combust! This was great! "A-Anything in my line of sight, I mean. It just... stops."

"Like a freeze frame in a movie." Shoji mused. "That's a very impressive quirk. Why have you never brought it up?"

"A-Ah, I don't know. I've never really... u-used it before now. I don't have any practice and... I don't know..." She averted her gaze, cheeks going red. A lot of her classmates had been practicing with their quirks, and working hard to get here! She hadn't trained at all for this, and she just felt... sometimes she just felt wrong having gotten in. Even if the exam was grueling and had exhausted her more than it did a lot of the other kids, and had left her aching for days, she still just felt... guilty?

"You got here just as the rest of us did, Lillian. You took and passed the written portion of the exam. You deserve to be here just as much as anyone in this bus does." Shoji paused. "...Excluding Mineta."

Lillian almost laughed, but held it. For the most part. A small snort that seemed to satisfy Shoji escaped her. Talking to Lillian was nice and refreshing in a way. She was nice, and even though she was timid and unsure, she seemed determined.

"Thanks, Shoji." She smiled up at him. "I-It means a lot. I think you'll make a great hero."

"You will too." Shoji sounded so sure of himself that Lillian couldn't help but believe him just a little, and that made her feel lighter. She was going to work just as hard as her classmates from here on out!

"Everyone, sit down." Aizawa grumbled. "We're leaving."
