Chapter 18
Third person pov
"What's it like to work so closely with All Might?!"
Lilian let out a squeak as a microphone was shoved into her face, eyes widening as many cameras fell upon her. She's simply turned the corner, and there they were. A sea of merciless reporters who'd finally caught wind of All Might's teaching position here at UA high. Lillian felt her shoulders tense, and the overwhelming urge to freeze the group fell upon her shoulders. She gulped back the temptation, forcing an awkward smile. Still, she had no idea what to say.
"I-I'm sorry! Uh- I-I really have t-to-" Lillian felt distress settle within her when she realized the group of reporters was standing solely between her and the gate that would give her entrance into the high school. Her hand tightened around the ID card that would give her access, her eyes flitting back and forth as her panicked mind struggled to think of a plan.
God, crying on live television would surely give the prestigious UA High a bad name! She had to keep it together, at least until she could get out of shot of the many cameras pointed at her and some of her classmates, who were scattered around her. They seemed just as unsure as she was, though some did manage to fight their way through and slip in. She wanted to call out to them, but her mouth felt too dry to do so.
"Are you one of All Might's students? Tell us, what's the Symbol of Peace like in person?!" The woman was persistent. Lillian wasn't dumb enough to think answering a question or two would get her a free pass through the sea of camera men and eager interviewers.
"U-Uh, really n-nice?" Lillian squeaked. Vaguely, she could hear Uraraka answered the same question somewhere on the other side of the group. Lillian blanched. There was no way she'd be able to get to the brunette.
A shadow appeared behind Lillian, and she twisted around to see none other than Aizawa-sensei. The girl felt relief wash over her like a tidal wave. "Ah, excuse me, sir! Can you go get All Might for us?" The woman who'd been bombarding Lillian with questions asked. She, along with many others, had sheepish deadpan expressions plastered on their faces. "Also... you look like a mess. What's your deal?"
"All Might's not on campus today. Now get out of here. You've disturbed my students enough." Aizawa raised a hand, taking a step forward. That urged the panicked Lillian to head forward. The crowd parted for Aizawa, and Lillian rode the wave, stopping only to properly express her gratitude to her teacher. She gave a quick, jittery thanks to her sensei, who nodded lazily and sighed, before she ran off towards the classroom.
God, she couldn't keep doing this, could she? She was in the top class at the top hero school! Of course she'd have to face the press. She needed to get some sort of game face in order, or else she was doomed. She thought about how her classmates had dealt with the press. Well... most hadn't. They'd answered a question and then forced their way in. Lillian wasn't sure she had that kind of confidence just yet.
"Lillian!" A voice called. She turned to see none other than Asui and Ochaco. "We thought we heard you at the gate. Are you okay? There were a lot of reporters, ribbit."
"Y-Yeah, I'm fine!" She waved her hands in front of her, pushing some hair behind her ear. School hadn't even started yet, and her ponytail was already falling apart. How did Momo manage to keep hers in check all day? "A-Are you guys..." She trailed off.
"Oh, we're alright! A little spooked, but I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later." Ochaco laughed, pressing her fingertips together. Lillian felt a bit of her nerves fade, and she offered a smile back.
"Want to walk to class with us, ribbit?" Tsu asked. Lillian brightened and nodded.
They talked more about the press on their way there. Lillian expressed her relief that Aizawa-sensei had shown up, and Ochaco sheepishly admitted she'd slipped in after Iida had bored them with his ramblings about All Might's superb teaching abilities. Tsu seemed to have simply jumped over them. Lillian wished she could do something like that.
"If only I could float myself! It would have made things so much easier." Ochaco whined as they entered the classroom. Lillian smiled a little while Tsu snickered. Lillian found that she quite liked having friends. Though she still had self doubts, she was sort of beginning to believe they really didn't find her to be an annoying nuisance. That they felt the same way about her as she did about them.
Class started when Aizawa managed to drag himself into the room, though he looked dead tired. Hagakure insisted it was because he was an insomniac, but Momo argued that he fell asleep too easy for that to be true. They'd concluded that he probably took extra shifts as a hero. Being both a pro and a teacher couldn't be easy.
"Decent work on yesterday's combat training, you guys." Aizawa sighed. "I saw the video feeds and went over each of your teams results. Bakugo. You're talented, so don't sulk like a child about your loss, okay?" He scoffed.
A few snickers erupted around the room as Bakugo's red eyes narrowed into a glare. Lillian shrunk back in wake of his temper, shivering slightly to herself. She was lucky he hadn't blown her up on her way home. She was pretty annoying, and she knew her stuttering could get repetitive.
"Yeah, whatever." Bakugo eventually grumbled.
"And Midoriya." Aizawa said, ultimately causing the boy to jolt in a panic. Lillian could honestly relate. "I see the only way you won the match was by messing up your arm again. Work harder. And don't give me the excuse that don't have control over your quirk. That line's already getting old. You can't keep breaking your body while training here, but your quirk real be really useful if you can get a handle on it." Aizawa allowed, glancing tiredly down at his papers. "So show a little urgency, alright?"
"Right!" Izuku looked excited, and Lillian couldn't help but feel a little energized seeing her fellow shy classmate look so determined. He was nervous too. If he could do it, couldn't she?
"Let's get down to business. Our first task... will decide your future." Aizawa said. Lillian froze, and the rest of the class seemed to tense at the serious undertone of their teacher's voice. She shared a nervous look with Ochaco, her hands clenching. Ochaco tried to offer a reassuring smile, but the worry in her eyes was evident. Lillian was honestly just relieved to see she wasn't the only one.
"You all need to pick a class representative."
Lillian deflated immediately. She'd just about had a heart attack, but she was glad to see it was just normal school stuff. She was pleased that the rest of the class seemed to feel the same way, save for a few of the more... serious students, like Todoroki, Bakugo, and even Tokoyami. Lillian was glad to see she fit in with the majority.
Lillian could see the benefits of being a class representative. Hero agencies would see leadership in it, and you'd be a top pick for sure. Despite that, and everyone's urgency to volunteer for the position, Lillian couldn't bring herself to raise her hand. She knew it would look astounding on an resume, but she also knew she didn't the right mentality to lead the class. It's not that she wasn't smart enough, or anything of that sort! She just... she panicked too much, and wasn't confident enough in herself. Maybe next year...
Lillian found herself voting for Tenya Iida. He was formal, and seemed so dedicated, she just assumed he'd be the best choice. Despite that, he still didn't win. She was happy to see that Izuku did, however! Maybe he could give a good name to all the quiet kids.
Ochaco whistled innocently as Iida trembled in the desk in front of her. Lillian deadpanned. It was pretty clear she'd been one of the ones to give Izuku a vote. Lillian wondered if she should say something to Iida. Would that be rude? She didn't want to make him feel worse, or hurt the feelings of others by revealing that she hadn't voted for then. She lowered her gaze, glancing at Todoroki. He looked completely bored. She sighed a little, returning her eyes to her desk. She wished she could be that collected.
"Alright, the class rep is Midoriya, and the deputy is Yaoyorozu." Aizawa announced boredly, still zipped up in his sleeping bag.
"R-Really. Uh... i-it's not a mistake?" Midoriya looked ready to keel over and die. Lillian couldn't blame him.
Momo sighed. "How'd this happen?" She asked herself.
"This might not be so bad." Tsu noted.
"Yeah, I can get behind Midoriya I guess." Kirishima agreed.
Ochaco leaned towards her desk neighbor. "Who'd you vote for, Lillian?" She asked quietly. "I voted for Izuku. He was just so cool during the Hero-Villain training exercise, I couldn't help it!" Her voice raised a little, but not enough to draw the attention of the jabbering class.
Lillian's cheeks go a little red with embarrassment. "I-I actually voted for Iida." She admitted. Ochaco looked surprised. "H-He just seems really r-responsible and... level headed?" She didn't know. Ochaco giggled.
"Huh, you're right." She noted airily. "I never really thought about it before... you're really observant!"
Lillian's face lit up, and she quickly became a flustered mess. Ochaco didn't seem bothered, laughing as the girl began to quietly panic and thank her, and deny that no, she was observant, but that didn't mean Ochaco was wrong. The gravity-manipulator seemed to find her ramble extremely amusing.
