Chapter 17
I'm so conflicted with my pairing right now. Honestly, it could go anyway. I love Shinso, Todoroki is my son, and will be spending more time with Lillian in the future, and Bakugo is Bakugo. I'm sort of quaking. Maybe I should just wait until the right time for romance arises, choose, and then write separate stories for the two I didn't pick? With like, different OCs and stuff?

Lunch with Shinso had been the best. The other students at the table were a little lost. A cute girl was sitting with Shinso, and she wasn't terrified? She answered questions with a smile on her face, as though he couldn't make her into his puppet at any given moment. Then again, the students of class 1-C supposed they didn't know Shinso that well, so who were they to judge? That being said, he could be an asshole.
Shinso was used to ignoring the scrutinizing gazes of his peers, and he was glad that Lillian didn't seem to notice at all. She had an innocent and bubbly air about her that made him want to relax. He was a mellow, quiet person. He didn't have many friends, and was a little odd. His unnecessarily wild hair and the bags under his eyes, along with his lack of social skills, attested to that.
"W-We should eat together tomorrow, too! I still have so many questions a-" Lillian suddenly stopped herself, nearly dropping her tray. Shinso raised an eyebrow as he gazed down at her. She looked thoroughly embarrassed. "S-Sorry! I've been asking so m-many questions, and I now realize h-how rude and insensitive I may h-have come across. A-And of course you don't have to sit with me! S-Sorry, I just-"
"It's fine." Shinso cut her off, grinning lazily down at the flustered girl. "I'd like to eat with you again, and I don't mind the questions. I still have some as well." He admitted. Lillian seemed to relax and brighten a little, but still looked undeniably flustered. Shinso found this incredibly amusing, and it made him that much more intrigued. How had such a shy, timid girl, got into the hero course? Just freezing the robots wouldn't do much, and he really couldn't imagine her scaling them like some warrior and ripping out their wires with a war-cry.
Shinso walked Lillian back to class, assuring her many times that it was no bother. Some may have found her constant worry and anxiety tedious, but he found he didn't mind it. It felt good to reassure someone, and to have them take it to heart, even if it was only to an extent. He could tell without a doubt that she believed him, but her own self doubts lingered nonetheless. He wondered what had made her that way. Her quirk was powerful, and kids with abilities as impressive as hers were usually put on a pedestal by all around them.
"Lillian, there you are!" Ochaco Uraraka had been panicking for the past hour or so, all throughout lunch. Her and the other girls were just about to launch some form of a search party, because Uraraka had lost Lillian. The shyest, most timid, and probably most innocent out of the lot of them. While Deku was the most fragile on the boy's side, and the sweetest, there had been an unspoken agreement that Lillian was the girl version somehow.
"O-Ochaco!" Lillian stuttered as the brunette threw her arms around her.
"We were just about to go look for you, ribbit." Tsu admitted as Ochaco dragged Lillian over. The dark-haired girl was confused, but nodded anyway, her cheeks red.
"You had us worried!" Mina exclaimed boisterously. "When Uraraka said she'd lost you, we thought the worst!"
"Yeah, where did you go, anyway? We figured you'd be lingering around the walls not wanting to sit down, but you were nowhere to be found." Momo frowned, peering down at her. Lillian wasn't the shortest of the girls, but she was close, and she was extremely nervous. They hadn't known each other long, but the girls of class 1-A had earned some sort of understanding and bond. They would, after all, undeniably be classmates for the remainder of their high school years. Not only that, but there weren't that many of them.
"Maybe she left." Jiro suggested.
"I would have." Hagakure admitted. "It's pretty overwhelming in there."
"I-I'm terribly sorry I-I worried you!" Lillian bowed immediately in apology. She hadn't realized she'd upset her new friends! "I-I lost sight of Uraraka, b-but a boy I met during the entrance e-exams spotted me, and offered I eat with him. I-I'm sorry. I should have looked for you, and at least told you I was going to eat with someone else. Th-That was really dumb of me. Pl-Please don't be mad!" They watched Lillian spiral into panic with deadpan expressions. "N-Not that you're not allowed to be mad. I-I'm not trying to say-"
"Lillian, calm down. It's okay." Momo assured with a smile. "We were just concerned. You are pretty timid."
As if proving Yaoyorozu's point, Lillian's face flushed bright scarlet with embarrassment when she realized she'd overstepped in her apology, instead rambling in alarm. She shrunk into herself, playing with her fingers and gnawing on her bottom lip.
"Yeah, it's fine!" Mina chirped. "And... what's this about a boy?"
The topic of Lillian being lost faded away, and suddenly they were all focused on the first bit of potentially good gossip of the year. So far, nothing much had happened, but hearing that Lillian had met someone, a boy, sparked their interest. Lillian seemed to light up a little at the mention of her newest friend, who was far too nice to her, honestly.
"H-His name is Shinso." Lillian informed. "I-I sort of told him w-we could eat together tomorrow, but if y-"
"No!" Hagakure waved her hands in front of her faces, though you could only see her sleeved arms moving.
"Yeah, you should totally eat with him, Lillian! I'm assuming he isn't in this class, which means lunch will be one of the only times you can see him anyway." Ochaco assured with a grin. "You get to see us all day!"
"She's right, ribbit. Is he cute?" Tsu asked shamelessly.
Lillian looked confused for a moment. She wasn't an idiot, but she'd also never really had friends to talk to before. It took a moment for the true implication of the question to click in her scattered thoughts. Once it did, her face blossomed a brilliant red shade once more, and she buried her face in her hands.
"I-It certainly isn't l-like that!" She squeaked out.
"We know." Jiro grinned lazily. "We didn't say it was."
"Yeah, it was just a question." Momo smirked. Lillian looked mortified. She knew gossip was a part of friendship between teen girls, as her book had said, but she was still hit hard with it when she truly came face to face with the brunt of it. This morning, they'd discussed the boys in their class, and more about how Jiro found Kaminari oddly attractive, but Lillian hadn't been put on the spot like this.
Aizawa shuffled in, saving the day. "In your seats." He sighed. "Pull out your textbooks and turn to page thirty-four. We don't have all day."
The rest of the day went by smoothly without any questions about Shinso. The animosity between Izuku and Bakugo came up briefly, along with the other hero class, 1-B. Tsu confidently claimed that a few members from their class had been glaring over at their table, and Ochaco backed up the statement surely. Momo didn't seem surprised.
School ended, and Lillian walked out with Uraraka, Hagakure, and Mina. Their houses weren't the same direction as hers, so they eventually parted ways once they came to a fork. She was a little relieved. She loved her new friends, of course! They were nice, and polite, and too good for her, really. She just got burnt out after a certain amount of socialization, even if they were some of the most amazing people she'd ever had the pleasure of meeting.
"Oi." Lillian froze as her bag was snatched off her back. "It's you again."
"B-Bakugo-san?" Lillian squeaked, surprised to see the boy. He glared down at her with clear annoyance, holding her bag far above her head as she meekly reached for it, almost out of reflex. She froze, staring up at him with wide eyes. He rolled his own red ones, scoffing and continuing forward. Lillian weakly stared after him. Did he feel bad about yesterday?
"Are you coming?" He looked extremely irritated. His harsh words were enough to jolt her back into action, and she rushed to catch up with him, her face red, and eyes wide with some form of fright that made Bakugo even more annoyed. Lillian fell into step slightly behind him, her eyes on the ground. She'd occasionally glance at him. Did he feel bad about yesterday?
Lillian felt tears sting at her eyes. God, what if she'd pissed him off during class? Had she said anything? Maybe she'd accidentally looked at him... should she apologize?! Oh god, what if it was when she'd sneezed? Maybe it had disturbed his thought process so badly that he completely lost track of everything they were doing. This was all her fault. She should apologize. What if that upset him? What if he was in thought right now, and she annoyed him? What i-
"You look like you just watched your fucking dog die." Bakugo scoffed. "Stop."
"S-Sorry, Bakugo-san." Lillian squeaked out. He looked even more annoyed.
"Didn't I tell you to stop calling me that?!" He barked. He'd been walking home when he spotted her. He didn't know why, but he'd sped up to catch up with her. He still felt vaguely guilty about making her cry the day before, though he'd never say it. It didn't look like this was going much better, though. She'd be a sobbing mess at this rate.
"S-Sorry." She sputtered, blue eyes wide. He scoffed again.
A part of him was still intrigued about her quirk. This chick like a baby bunny or some other shit: nervous, small, and shy. At least, that's what he thought of looking at her. Her quirk was something useful, from what he had observed, so he wasn't sure why she lacked the confidence everyone else in class had, save for that idiotic Deku. Her quirk was more impressive than most of the others he'd seen in class, which was once again something he'd never admit out loud, so she, in theory, should have been showered in praise. And rightfully so. The powerful were meant to be appreciated.
Bakugo simply scoffed at her again, speeding up and slinging her bag over his shoulder along with his. She scurried after him like a frightened mouse, tugging at her sleeves, and periodically smoothing her skirt out like there was something wrong with it. Sometimes she'd pull at her ponytail or fiddle with her fingers. She was worse than that damn Deku, and it annoyed him. Why?
He didn't voice his questions, clicking his tongue at himself in dismay. Why the hell did he care? It didn't matter. He could do whatever the fuck he wanted, and nobody could stop him. So he walked Lillian to her house just as he did the other day, shoving her bag into her arms and stomping off, leaving her confused, panicked, and near tears.
Lillian supposed that if this was one of the things she'd have to deal with her path to becoming a hero, she could bear with it, for her sake, and for the sake of all the people she was sure she could save if she tried her very hardest to let UA and its teachings take their course.
