Chapter 129
Third person pov
Gang Orca and his minions were terrifyingly strong. She hadn't been able to get all of them in her shot without running the risk of freezing some other contestants too, but that was okay. It was mainly the Pro Hero she was after. She knew it was going to wreak havoc on her body to freeze the oceanic hero, but she also knew how beneficial it was going to be to taking them down and saving the 'victims' in the area. Gang Orca was in the middle of some sort of speech when she froze him in his tracks. She immediately almost fell over from the sheer pain that stabbed her in the stomach. The silence that followed her quirk's activation was deafening in such a loud field. She thought maybe she heard Hitoshi whoop in the distance. There was no telling.
This was the perfect time for an existential crisis if you asked Lillian. Her eggroll wasn't feeling super buttered at the moment. The whole incident with the Tornado fuck had really drained her emotionally and physically. Yanking him down? That had not been easy when you considered his size. He could definitely bench press a Prius if he wanted to. Maybe even one of those massive Ford trucks that every racist white guy in Texas seemed to own. You know what? Lillian technically could too, arguably. She'd definitely have to freeze it first, but she could undoubtedly lift it up. So it was fine! She was totally on par with Wind Ape.
It felt kind of like her stomach was ripping itself apart from the inside. She had no idea what in god's name her gut had to do with her freezing time in a certain area, but it sure was annoying. Her eyes didn't feel great either. Her hand immediately flew to her belt trying to hunt down her eyedrops whilst Bakugo tried to keep her from falling over like a limp noodle. She could tell he was just itching to get down there and fight, but also didn't want to leave her to topple helplessly down this massive mound of rubble like Sero had when he got smacked in the face. She would, too. Lillian wondered if this was what it felt like to be a boneless chicken wing.
"Wait a second... Lillian!" Iida loudly realized from... somewhere. Lillian tipped her head back with a wheeze, dropping some eyedrops in her eyes in a shaky manner. She'd nearly forgotten what near death felt like, but here she was again. Literally dying. She could feel the blood starting to build in her throat. This was it. She hoped Neito still had her funeral plans. "Everyone, get moving! A comrade has bought us more time by freezing a portion of the enemies!"
Who knew Iida was such a godsend, honestly. Lillian tried--and failed-- to stand up a little straighter, taking deep breaths and trying to like, not pass out. Katsuki looked like he was having the internal argument of a lifetime trying to figure out what the fuck to do with her. Torn between blasting off to kick ass or staying here to be a human crutch. Lillian was honestly pretty impressed he hadn't ditched her yet. In his shoes, she would've punted herself into the stratosphere and ran off to take advantage of the situation. Props to him for caring. Maybe it was because her dad was watching. She could feel him lasering holes into their backs even from here.
Bakugo really did want to go kick ass. Not just because he liked kicking ass, but because he wanted to make sure he passed. The explosive blonde was pretty confident he was going to make it and get his license. It just... wasn't something he wanted to risk, you know? This was some serious shit, and he'd forever hate himself if he missed out on the chance to go after the literal fucking Yakuza. It had been incredibly badass the first time around. Doing alongside Lillian and the other fuckers? He wasn't going to lie. It was going to be an epic, one in a lifetime sort of experience. Like hell he was going to miss out on that and put a dent in the plan they'd already made.
"Y-You've gotta go throw Gang Orca out of the arena." Lillian sputtered. Blood dribbled from her mouth. Katsuki made a disgusted face when she spat some of it out, to which she rolled her eyes. What did he want her to do? Swallow it back down? Fucking nasty. He was such a germaphobe sometimes, and for what? "Just chuck him. I can't hold him very long."
Bakugo stared. She wanted him to go down there and shoot the killer whale dude literally over the wall? Like, out into the parking lot? Damn. He wasn't against it, but he also wasn't trying to get sued. Surely that wasn't against the rules. They were supposed to save and defend the people who were currently here, right? So getting the villains away from them as soon as possible was probably a great idea. He just wasn't too sure how he felt about leaving her here to fend for herself when she could barely stand. She looked like something out of a horror movie. She'd gotten ten times paler, was leaking blood from her mouth, and had eyes redder than a stoner's in a hotbox. She wasn't doing good. Katsuki wasn't going to admit it, but he was worried.
However, she was personally asking him to go down there and do this for her. And they'd never said they couldn't toss people out of the arena. Bakugo had sent some rubble out over the wall just earlier and nothing had been announced over the intercoms.
There were still plenty lackeys that hadn't been frozen. The other examinees fought their way towards Gang Orca as best they could whilst also rescuing and protecting the civilians. Lillian hoped Shoto would show up. Gang Orca could do pretty much everything an Orca could, but on land and supercharged in the way most animal quirks were. However, this meant he was incredibly susceptible to heat. It was sad to think about, but she... she remembered Izuku rambling about it one day at lunch, when Gang Orca had almost slid into the Number Nine spot one week. The memory made her throat feel tight. She couldn't imagine how Shoto felt. If he didn't show up to help, she could understand that.
Most of his sidekicks had water-based quirks as well, meaning they too wouldn't do well against heat. That's also why sending Katsuki was such a good idea. His explosions were incredibly hot, and would dry them out enough to weaken them noticeably. Lillian closed her eyes as Katsuki slowly lowered her down, carefully positioning her so that she wouldn't fall. The freckled girl forced herself to sit upright. Laying down was going to leave her vulnerable to passing out or falling asleep, which was going to break her quirk's hold on the situation. The best thing she could do was sit there and stare at Gang Orca with as much intent as possible. She may have to refreeze him in a moment and release some of his surrounding sidekicks, but as long as he stayed paralyzed, that was fine. She'd do what she had to.
"You stay right the fuck here and don't move." Bakugo instructed very bossily. Lillian gave him a look. Or what? What was he going to do? Set off an explosion that lit her ass on fire? Throw her into the sun? They didn't have time for this shit. She'd live. And if she didn't-- oh well. Lillian could only hope her sitting here and keeping Gang Orca under her hold was enough to rack her up some points despite the fact that she was staying completely still. And back to Bakugo-- where the fuck did he think she was going? Did it look like she could move? Attitude = unnecessary. "I'll be back."
And with that, he threw himself over the end of the rubble. Very impressive, Lillian had to admit. She nodded even though he was no longer watching, gazing after him as he blasted himself with extreme speed right towards Gang Orca. A few of his sidekicks noticed immediately and tried to intervene, but Katsuki had gotten good at navigating through the air. It was sort of like watching an action movie whilst also having the flu and being on her period. Everything hurt, she was bleeding, she felt sick, tired, and her eyes hurt. Oh, and there was action happening. Hence the movie part. Yeah.
She heard the sound of someone climbing up the hill behind her. Maybe more than one person, actually. She didn't have the time or energy to turn around. She instead stared at Gang Orca as Bakugo shot towards him face first like some sort of meteor. She wished she could see his face right now. He probably looked like a feral cat that had gotten into their owner's caffeine pills. Lillian wondered if he would ever let her put a Go-Pro on his head so they could see a day in his life. Did she want to know? Maybe a little bit. With how brash he tended to act, it would be interesting to see how he acted when no one was around.
"Lillian?" Kaminari questioned. Lillian didn't move. The blonde scrabbled up next to her, eyes wide. A child of sorts was clinging to his back. One that could pass as either five years old or forty. Lillian would assume he was the latter. The electric boy peered at her face, concern creasing his brows. "Holy shit! Are you okay?!"
Lillian did her favorite trick: opening her mouth so that a shit ton of blood spilled out. The boy let out a shriek-- as did the actor on his back. Shoto rushed up too, still covered in dust from when he had to catch Kaminari midair. His mismatched eyes were buggy with worry. Lillian held up her fist in greeting. The half-and-half boy bumped his against it on reflex, staring at her in an analytical manner to try and determine whether this was a serious medical emergency or just a minor one. Lillian could still form full sentences in her head and give fist bumps, so the girl was assuming it was probably fine. So long as Bakugo hurried the fuck up and threw Gang Orca already.
This whole test was sort of bogus. Lillian could feel that wind guy's quirk getting closer. He was definitely about to descend upon them and ruin everyone's day. That seemed to be something he was quite apt at. She honestly wanted to know where he got all that audacity from. You know what? She was going to contact his mother after this. She was. She was going to contact her and tell on him. Lillian was that petty, and she knew that was the best way to get at anyone. She hoped he got grounded for life. Coming after her most traumatized and sad friend like he knew jack shit? Ugh. He reeked of entitlement.
Hitoshi and Aizawa watched everything go down with rapt attention. Miss Joke tried to speak a few more times, but she was expertly ignored into silence. She wasn't even trying anymore. Good. If Hitoshi had two hands, he'd be clenching both his fists. Instead he was just clenching one. Because that was like, you know... the only one he had. But details, details! So far, all of 1-A was doing incredibly well. Lillian and Bakugo had paired off, and Shoto and Kaminari had. Aizawa was definitely more than a little salty about this. Lillian was now sitting on a hill looking like a deflated toad, keeping several people frozen. The purple-haired boy was actually starting to get a little worried.
"She's going to sustain internal damage at this rate." Aizawa hissed out. He was leaning forward, tightly gripping the back seat of the empty chair in front of him as he tried to get a better look at his daughter's state. She was pretty hard to see from here. It was obvious she wasn't doing too hot. Gang Orca was incredibly powerful. He was Number Ten without even trying. Many people disliked him due to his naturally scary appearance, so his position in the rankings only proved even more so how capable he was. Keeping him and a fair amount of his sidekicks on hold had to be absolutely killing her. Literally.
Bakugo landed hard and didn't hesitate to lift Gang Orca like he was nothing more than a cardboard cutout. There were several shouts of alarm and a few of confusion. Not too many people realized that Lillian's quirk made things weightless. Bakugo took a moment to position the massive pro so he could better throw him. He felt pretty fucking badass. He also knew he had to hurry this the fuck along before Lillian bled out and before he got tackled by these weird spandex-wearing motherfuckers. Were the matching black bodysuits honestly necessary? They were ugly as hell. Didn't even look scary. They definitely could've done better. The minimal effort was painfully obvious.
He felt his palms begin to heat. He carefully bent his arms, lowering the pro a bit. He steadied his stance, digging his feet into the ground and bracing for the recoil this explosion was going to have. He hoped Lillian was watching this shit. He wouldn't have thought to simply get rid of the villain. In a real life situation, blasting the villain away and out of sight could definitely backfire. They could attack the civilians in that new area they landed in instead. This, however, was not real life. This was a test and they had to protect the actors here from the fake villains. So, hopefully this wouldn't be a total fuck up.
"DIE!" He shrieked. A few of the sidekicks who'd been about to grab him let out screams of their own as their leader went absolutely flying. Bakugo blasted himself up in the air soon after so he wouldn't be caught, but the lackeys were too stunned to do much of anything but watch Gang Orca fly. And fly he did. He soared, unfreezing at his peak. The sudden return of his weight pulled him the rest of the way over the wall, his beady eyes wide and his limbs flapping with wild confusion. Unfreezing him also had to unfortunate side effect of unfreezing the oceanic hero's other sidekicks. Luckily, they were too confused to do anything once they realized something wasn't right. Bakugo flipped through the air, blasting himself further away from the center of the villains.
There was relative silence. Gang Orca's journey through the sky was viewed by all eyes present. The awkward quietness that fell over the entire arena after he disappeared over the arena wall was almost painful in how still it was. A few of them cringed at the distant sound of a crash followed by the distinct wail of a car alarm. Lillian hoped they weren't going to have to pay for that. It's not like they were the ones who'd landed on the car, right? Absolutely.
The rest of the actors were rounded up and given first aid soon after the issue of Gang Orca was resolved. A few members of 1-A went to help with the villains. Wind Gorilla was there too. Shoto went to offer his aid as well, but the ape was smart enough to ignore the half-and-half boy this time. Good. Kaminari was hovering close by like a rabid attack dog anyway. He could be pretty scary when he wanted to. Especially when you considered the fact that he could easily short someone's heart out with little to no effort. Talk about threatening.
Once everyone had been rescued, the exercise ended and the results were set to be posted in the arena itself. Anyone injured was instructed to head towards the infirmary. Most of Lillian's classmates were fine and gravitated a closer to her when they realized she'd just coughed up half her blood supply. Shoto was way ahead of them. Already nearby, he rushed to come help her up so she could be dragged to the infirmary. Her dad would surely be there to beat the fuck out of her for being such an idiot. Such was life. Well, he was actually more likely to beat Katsuki for taking so long to throw Gang Orca. Never mind that the pro-hero acting as a villain was practically halfway across the arena and three times as big as Katsuki was.
It was a surprise that Bakugo wanted to follow she and Shoto to the infirmary. He tried his best to mask it, but concern was painted all across his face. He'd tried to swipe her from her half-and-half friend's arms a few times, but Shoto had given him an unimpressed look that he'd probably learned from Mihoko at some point. There was no way he fabricated that up on his own. It was too powerful to have been generated by his socially-inept mind. No offense to him. A lot of cues flew over his head still. They were working on it.
Kaminari ran off to go get their results whilst Lillian's rotting corpse was hauled through the winding halls of the arena's inner workings. The freckled girl stared up at the ceiling and wondered if this was what hell felt like. Freezing Endeavor hadn't been this hard, even. Maybe that was because he was pathetic and had a dick the size of a teddy bear hamster. Proverbially and probably literally, she was sure. Gang Orca was an actually good person who didn't have to buy his way out of scandals and lawsuits because he didn't have any. He was definitely smarter too. She wondered if someone's intellect played into how long she could paralyze them.
"I'm surprised you were able to freeze him that long." Shoto noted as they walked along. Bakugo kept popping up over his shoulders like a whack-a-mole to look at Lillian. Lillian wondered how long it would be before he blew something up. If Hitoshi were here, they'd set bets. "Are you okay?"
"You fucking idiot. Does she look okay?" Bakugo immediately spat out. Which, fair. She was absolutely covered in blood. The support department was going to have her head for staining her sweater again, but that was a them problem.
"I'm fine." Lillian said. You know, like a liar. "My dad's lecture will hurt less than this."
This was something they couldn't help but agree with. Shoto gave a solemn nod, and Bakugo didn't refute it. He simply grunted and flicked his head to the side moodily. As though he were the one with their stomach being fucking-- shredded, or whatever. Was Recovery Girl here? Her quirk would knock Lillian out without a doubt, but that was better than whatever jig her internal organs were doing. She could feel them tap dancing in the most painful way possible. Doing a waltz in knife boots, or something. Whatever those were. Boots made out of knives, maybe. That sounded about right.
Aizawa met them at the door. His relief upon seeing his daughter still breathing was clear. He swallowed his scolding for later, instead opening the door and ushering Shoto in with her. He then proceeded to very saltily slam the door in Bakugo's face before the blonde could step in after them. The door's lock clicked in place soon after, leaving Katsuki to shriek his head off in the hallway. The noise was only vaguely interrupted by the sound of running footsteps and Kaminari screaming that they'd all passed. The good news was drowned out by a series of explosions that had Lillian, Shoto, and Hitoshi all wondering if the electric blonde was still alive out there. The doctor on the job shot some concerned glances at them and the door. Nobody said anything for a moment. Hitoshi was the first to speak, clearing his throat over the sound of Bakugo's muffled cursing.
"Well, I've got to hand it to you." He held up his stump. "You guys did a great job."
The door to the infirmary blew off. Kaminari--distantly-- started crying.
